Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System

Chapter 123: The Egg Hatched Between Two Winters

  • Next Chapter

The chick called from inside the shell, and the road tried to drag it out.

Black filament tightened in the feeding latch. The beak-sized notch pulled open with a gasp of sea air, while the dormant seam above it ground toward Aylin’s shoulder.

Aylin threw her weight off the visible catch.

Kedra dropped on the shadowless lane at the same moment. The adult seam slammed shut between them, close enough to catch a strand of Aylin’s hair. The feeding notch remained open beneath it.

Cold poured through. Over the cracked egg, the unnamed male crouched lower. His feet shook on the bronze rest, yet he kept the pale curve level beneath his brood fold.

Gredudande sent the chick’s first call through the Antarctic bar.

White-Nape answered. Pale-Cheek changed. Their living voices struck the hollow from one side.

From the other came the copied male, copied mate, and copied chick, each preserved at the instant before the egg’s newest crack.

None of the stolen voices moved the male.

A piece of shell broke loose beneath him.

Pava pulled off her outer coat. "Hest, hold this above the light. Not against the bird."

Hest caught one sleeve with his wrapped hand. Valea took the other. They stretched the coat between the Antarctic bar and the brood rest, cutting the white glare without covering the air path.

Wind folded around both edges.

Jiang moved into the gap on the male’s exposed side.

Pava caught his shoulder wrap. "Your body is cold already."

Jiang kept moving anyway.

"That is not an argument."

Jiang dragged the warm salt brick with his good foot and shoved it behind his breast. The stored heat barely touched his skin through wet feathers. It would not last. Neither would the hatch if the wind reached the chick first.

He pressed his back into the gap.

An open beak stopped Jiang at the edge of the rest.

Jiang stopped outside beak range and lowered his head. The other penguin could refuse him. The wind did not care which bird had permission.

Another shell chip lifted.

Looking from Jiang to the draft curling under his brood fold, the male pecked the stone once between them. Then he shifted a fraction toward the warm brick.

Jiang closed the remaining space with his flank.

No power answered. Cold moved from the hollow into him and stayed.

It found the gaps in Jiang’s wet feathers and the skin beneath his reopened shoulder. His body wanted him to turn breast-first toward the salt brick, tuck his beak, and save whatever warmth remained for himself.

Human memory supplied other useless options. A blanket held with hands. A door pushed shut. A sentence explaining that he meant no harm.

He had none of them.

Jiang had woken in this emperor body with a game-like System naming pieces of him before he understood how to stand. For too long, every change had felt like a step back toward the man he remembered. The chick beneath the male’s breast did not care about that man.

It needed the penguin in the wind.

Jiang spread his weight over both feet and made this body enough.

"You are a terrible blanket," Pava said.

Jiang did not waste heat objecting.

Between the male’s feet, the egg rocked.

One webbed foot of the male tightened beneath it. He eased the other outward, widening the cradle without letting the shell touch stone. A jagged line crossed the crown. Something damp and dark moved within.

Pava’s empty hands hovered at her knees.

"Can it breathe?" Kedra asked.

"It is still calling."

"That was not my question."

"It is the only answer I can give without taking it from him."

At the broken crown, the male bent his beak. For an instant Jiang feared he would crush it. Instead, he caught one lifted edge and peeled it away from the moving body inside.

A wet head pushed through.

Its beak opened, but no sound emerged this time.

Air struck its skin.

It folded against the shell, sparse down plastered flat, eyes shut. The male pulled his brood fold lower. The chick vanished beneath him except for the tip of its beak.

The Antarctic bar brightened. Hest lowered Pava’s coat until its hem nearly brushed the stone, and Valea raised her side to leave a pocket for air. The two humans had to follow every change in the wind without seeing the body they were protecting.

"Left edge," Pava said. Hest lowered it.

"Not that far. It still needs air."

"My hands know gates."

"This one needs to breathe."

Hest eased the cloth upward. A gentler draft crossed Jiang’s back while the space beneath the brood fold stayed dark.

The wet chick moved again. Its beak found the male’s bare skin and rested there, too tired to search.

Gredudande replayed the earlier call.

Toward the false sound, the beak tip lifted.

Jiang struck the stone with his good foot.

Back under the living body, the chick flinched. The male gave Jiang a warning peck that stopped short of his feathers, then answered the foot tap with a low vibration through his breast.

"Don’t call," Valea said.

Jiang had not meant to. His throat had opened anyway. He shut it.

Across the wall, the returning female pressed her beak into the narrow reach. Sea food scented the air. The male turned toward her, but black thread tightened beneath her lower beak and held the latch between them.

Varn lay flat beside the cup. "I can cut the thread if she backs out."

"She will not understand you," Aylin said.

"Neither does the road. It keeps getting in my way."

He laid the damaged knife on the stone where the far adult could see its dull shine, then tapped the handle and withdrew his hand.

She struck at it through the notch.

Varn pulled the knife clear. "Good. We agree about knives."

Her beak returned to the opening at once.

Gredudande gave the male’s copied call from behind her.

She did not turn. Her throat moved around a new answer while her eye stayed on the brood rest.

Black filament crept out beneath her beak.

Valea pinned its tip with the strip of cloth. The thread divided around the weave and rejoined on the other side.

"It wants the chick’s position," she said.

"Then it can have every wrong one," Kedra answered.

Kedra shifted her shadowless foot. Aylin moved on the visible lane, careful never to cross her. Together they altered which side of the feeding reach carried weight.

Gredudande jumped the copied chick call to a blind joint beneath Pava’s coat.

Pava moved the coat.

Next it sounded beside Varn’s knife.

He struck the joint with the broken hook handle.

Gredudande threw the call toward the drain.

Hest stamped over it with a wrapped palm on the wall for balance. "That one can stay."

They drove the false sound around the hollow without letting it settle beside the real chick.

Through it all, the male kept working the shell.

He lifted one edge with his beak. The chick pushed. Its body slid free by degrees, slick and far too small, until the empty shell tilted away from the male’s feet.

Pava sucked in air.

Across the warm skin above his toes, the chick lay helpless. Its neck could not hold its head. Thin down covered its back in wet ridges, no defense against either winter.

With his beak, the male caught the empty shell and placed it at the edge of the rest.

Pava nudged a folded cloth toward Jiang. "Under the shell. Not the chick."

Jiang dragged it into reach.

After pecking Jiang’s beak, the male took the cloth and pushed the shell onto it himself. The chick never left his feet.

The copied chick called from inside the empty shell.

Black filament shot from the feeding latch and looped around the pale curve. The cloth jerked in Jiang’s beak, dragging shell and salt frost toward the open cup.

The male lunged once.

His brood fold lifted.

The real chick made a breathless click beneath him, and the male stopped before leaving his feet. He watched the empty shell slide away.

Jiang understood. Whatever scent and warmth remained in that shell belonged to the hatch, but it was no longer the life that mattered.

He released the cloth to Varn.

"Drain?" Varn asked. Valea nodded.

Varn caught one corner with the broken hook handle. Jiang seized the other in his beak. They pulled sideways while the filament hauled toward the feeding notch.

Pava shifted her coat screen. Aylin and Kedra changed weight on their separate lanes. The copied call moved with the shell.

At the drain, Jiang let go.

Varn stamped the cloth into the narrow joint with his boot. Hest struck the catch. Stone closed over shell, one loop of filament, and the only dry cloth they could spare.

The copied chick continued once beneath the floor, then broke into Bent-Toe’s dead ending.

Under the male’s breast, the living chick breathed. One eye opened.

Softly, the returning female called through the feeding notch.

A dry click answered from the chick.

Gredudande copied that too.

Black thread spread from the latch in two directions, one toward the male and one toward the adult seam above. Aylin’s visible catch shuddered. Kedra’s shadowless stone lifted beneath her injured boot.

"It is growing the large road around the sound," Valea said.

Hest braced the upper seam with both wrapped hands. Varn wedged his broken hook handle beside one thumb. Aylin and Kedra held separate catches. Pava kept the coat over the Antarctic glare.

Jiang had only his body left for the wind.

Inside the dark pouch, the chick began searching.

Its head bumped the male’s breast. Its beak opened against bare skin, closed, and opened again.

At the notch, the returning female shifted. Food smell filled the cup. Her throat worked, but the turn in the old feeding reach still lay between her and the chick.

"Can he feed it?" Aylin asked.

Pava watched the male, not the road. "For a little while, if his body has anything left."

Her answer carried none of the certainty Jiang wanted. The male’s breast had hollowed around the long fast. Even with the salt brick beneath the wool, each breath moved more of him than the last.

"And if he doesn’t?" Kedra asked.

Pava glanced toward the female’s beak in the contaminated notch. "Then we make that reach work before the chick gets cold. We do not put it on stone to save time."

Aylin shifted her bruised shoulder beneath the visible catch. "No one touches it unless he asks."

The male could not understand the promise. Jiang could. He planted his foot more firmly beneath the wool.

The male swayed before his outer foot slid.

His outer foot slipped against its wrapping. The egg was gone, but the living weight on his toes was less forgiving. He recovered without exposing the chick.

Jiang moved his good foot beneath the edge of the male’s wool, offering support without touching him.

He looked down at it.

Black filament pulled. The adult seam opened a finger’s breadth before Aylin and Kedra forced it shut.

From the notch, the returning female called.

Again the chick searched.

At last, the male accepted Jiang’s foot.

His weight settled across the shared edge. Not command. Not surrender. One exhausted body choosing the support that existed.

Then the male bent over the chick.

His throat worked once with nothing to show. He swallowed, tried again, and brought up a small pale bead from deep in his esophagus.

On the first try, the chick missed.

Pava made a sound and trapped it behind her teeth.

Holding still, the male let the chick find his beak on the second try and swallow.

It was almost nothing.

The cost reached the male at once. His neck sagged. One eye closed. More of his weight fell onto Jiang’s foot and the wool beneath them.

From beneath him, the chick called.

This answer was stronger than the first, but still belonged to a body small enough to disappear under one adult breast.

Gredudande threw the sound into the upper seam.

Stone opened above the feeding notch.

Toward the chick, the returning female drove her beak. Food rose in her throat.

Valea shouted. Black filament followed beneath the female’s beak, curling toward the new opening as she pushed into the latch.
