Chapter 328: Life Is Contamination
Chapter 328: Chapter 93: Life Is Contamination
The situation was a little bizarre, but thankfully, Duan Fei kept his wits about him.
Along the way, he had already developed a faint suspicion that this world wasn’t as simple as he had imagined.
He first glanced at his pollution indicator bar and saw that it hadn’t changed.
Based on past experience, the bar would rise rapidly when he was near a source of contamination. Since it wasn’t moving at all, it meant the being before him wasn’t the source.
If the Demon King wasn’t the source of contamination, then the source for this dungeon had to be something, or someone, else.
He quickly posted this discovery on the forums. To his surprise, the little thread was immediately pinned and featured by the admins, so fast that Duan Fei wondered if he had some secret relationship with one of them.
A flood of players poured into the thread and began analyzing the evidence Duan Fei had provided. They all came to the same conclusion: he was right.
The Demon King wasn’t the source of contamination in this dungeon.
Players immediately started flaming the admins. ‘Why the hell didn’t you explain anything in the event description?!’ ‘Now, with only five real-world hours left, you tell us: Sorry, folks, your princess is in another castle!’
‘If you’re out of ideas, go take a swim in a septic tank! Thanks!’
Other players argued that there was still time. If they acted now, they might still have a chance to succeed.
After all, there were still five in-game days left. They still had a chance.
As everyone argued back and forth, most of the players eventually saw the forum post and understood that the Demon King wasn’t their real target.
After a brief moment of shock, the players sprang into action once more.
All players, except for those holding the fifteenth floor against the Celestial Wing Knight Order, left the Dungeon to search the surrounding area for clues.
Some players started to rally, heading toward the unexplored northern region of the Kingdom.
Players native to the north, led by the Swordsmen, stepped up. They acted as temporary Scouts, leading a massive group of players in a northern blitz. They hoped their sheer numbers could make up for the lack of intel in a last-ditch effort.
While the entire player base was being mobilized, Duan Fei was still in a standoff with the Demon King.
Looking at the Demon King, who seemed desperate to die, Duan Fei glanced at the Attributes of the dagger in his hand, then silently put it away in his pocket.
Godslaying Dagger: Contaminated, Purple, Extractable.
Description: A dagger possessing godslaying properties. It can inflict guaranteed damage on gods. This property can be fused with other items to improve their quality and is guaranteed to add the [Godslaying] affix.
In *Abyss*, gods were not to be trifled with.
These beings often possessed Divinity. Powerful Divinity could nullify most attacks, making it nearly impossible for mortals to harm a god.
However, the [Godslaying] affix allowed a weapon to harm gods, making it incredibly useful when fused into one.
Seeing Duan Fei’s small movement, the Demon King asked in confusion, “Excuse me, what are you doing?”
“That’s not important. What’s important is, why do you want to die?”
The Demon King’s attention was successfully diverted. “Because I no longer have a reason to stay. The fact that you’ve made it here proves you possess sufficient ability. I have no more need to linger here. I can finally leave.”
As it spoke, the Demon King waved an arm, revealing the space where the Demon King’s Castle was located.
It was a vast, deep, starry sky. The world, carried on the back of a Titan, was merely an insignificant speck within it.
“This universe is immeasurably vast, and my seeding mission here is complete. Though I am called the Demon King, I am in fact a type of Outer God, merely acting in the role of a Demon King.”
“You’re trash!”
“…Um, what did you just say?”
The Demon King seemed as if it had never been treated this way before and looked like it was about to burst into tears.
Not only that, but its body began to change rapidly. In a moment, it had transformed into a woman who looked identical to the god worshipped by the natives on the fifteenth floor.
Duan Fei raised a hand, signaling for the Demon King to be quiet. He then looked at his achievement: “Contempt for the Gods.”
He had gotten this achievement back in his very first dungeon. The requirement was to show contempt to four different types of gods.
He had already shown contempt to an Evil God, a True God, and a Demon God. Today’s Outer God, the Demon King, was the last one.
With all four achievements unlocked, his damage against gods and beings with Divinity increased dramatically. It also unlocked a special ability.
Divinity.
This Divinity hadn’t come easy. The Power of the Void merged with the Divinity, but the Void’s Power was clearly a tier lower than Divinity.
Therefore, the Void settled for second best and became a branch of Divinity. It began to pour its Power into the Divinity, slowly strengthening the Divinity within Duan Fei.
At the same time, Duan Fei’s Profession, “Void Summoner,” also changed. The “Void” prefix was replaced by a higher-tier one, and he was now a “Holy Summoner.”
The Void Energy from his Void Glasses was converted into Divine Energy and now provided Divinity-type Skill Points.
However, these new Skill Points were much harder to come by; it would probably take a much longer time to earn a single Divinity Skill Point.
All in all, this was a massive windfall.
After inspecting his new Divinity, Duan Fei found that it was perfectly compatible with the Power of the Void. All his previous Void Skills were retained, ensuring a smooth transition in his overall strength.
Moreover, Divinity could also mitigate some damage. Most incoming attacks would be weakened by his Divinity, making him much tankier from now on.
‘I’ve really hit the jackpot this time.’
Nodding in satisfaction, Duan Fei patted the weeping Demon King beside him. “Alright, stop crying. I was just joking earlier. Once you’ve had your cry, how about you tell me what you ‘Sowers’ are?”
Wiping away her tears, the Demon King said angrily, “I don’t think that joke was funny at all.”
“Fine, I won’t do it again. So, what are these Sowers?”
“We’re a type of Outer God. Our goal is to fill the Void with life and elevate its quality. The standard procedure is to descend, pass on the necessary knowledge to the local inhabitants, and build a Dungeon to test them. Once one of them reaches the bottom, we leave. We also have to intervene in the local culture as needed to guide them toward developing faith. The thirty-one gods on the surface are all my avatars, and they also correspond to thirty-one types of Magic. Pretty ingenious, wouldn’t you say?”
“That sounds more like a good system, not you being ingenious. Okay, okay, don’t cry! I was just kidding!”
After finally managing to console the Demon King, Duan Fei continued his questions. “So the Dungeon is a test? Then what’s the deal with resurrection?”
“Resurrection is a function I added later. Something… unusual has appeared within the living beings of this world. My only option is to purify them once after they die in the Dungeon, and then release them. Afterwards, they help guard the floors. Those who have died once have a strong resistance to that… thing.”
Recalling the contamination he had encountered before, Duan Fei had a good idea of what it was.
‘Life itself is a form of contamination.’
