The Villain's Second Life

Chapter 47: The Perfect Vessel

  • Next Chapter

The chains tightened around Ethan’s arms.

They were not made of metal.

They were made of memories.

Every chain carried a moment from his past.

Darius raising the broken sword.

Evelyn standing beside the crystal.

Veyron kneeling before the First Door.

The black throne.

The Final War.

His death.

His second life.

The memories wrapped around him and pulled him toward the false version of himself.

The body inside the Archive looked exactly like Ethan.

But its eyes carried no uncertainty.

No fear.

No hesitation.

It was the person Darius believed Ethan should become.

A perfect vessel.

A perfect king.

A perfect weapon.

The false Ethan extended his hand.

"Come home."

Ethan pulled against the chains.

"I am already home."

The false Ethan smiled.

"You are hiding behind a weak body and borrowed friendships."

"I chose them."

"You inherited them."

"I lived them."

"You were designed to carry something greater."

"I was designed by people who did not understand me."

The false Ethan stepped closer.

His hand touched one of the chains.

The memory inside it changed.

Ethan saw himself standing on a throne.

Thousands of soldiers knelt before him.

The kingdoms had united beneath his banner.

No one rebelled.

No one betrayed him.

No one died because he hesitated.

The false Ethan spoke softly.

"This is what you could have had."

Ethan watched the vision.

A perfect empire.

A peaceful world.

A world where every danger had been crushed before it could grow.

A world where no one could disobey him.

The vision changed again.

Noah stood before the throne.

His head was lowered.

Elena wore a silver crown.

Adrian guarded the palace gates.

Professor Voss knelt beside them.

Lyra stood behind the throne, holding the White Flame.

Everyone was safe.

Everyone obeyed.

Everyone was miserable.

Ethan looked at the false version of himself.

"You believe this is peace."

"It is."

"It is silence."

"Silence prevents war."

"Silence prevents choice."

The false Ethan’s expression hardened.

"Choice caused every disaster you witnessed."

"Then why are you trying to take mine?"

The false body moved closer.

"Because you are wasting it."

The chains pulled Ethan forward.

The fragments inside his soul began to separate.

The Crown moved toward the false body.

The Witness flickered.

Knowledge went silent.

The Sword trembled inside its sheath.

The Identity Fragment formed a silver circle around Ethan’s heart, but the Archive recognized both versions as the same person.

It could not decide which identity was real.

Veyron raised his hand.

A dark spell struck the nearest chain.

It passed through without effect.

The false Ethan turned toward him.

"You cannot interfere."

Veyron’s eyes narrowed.

"I have interfered with more powerful things."

"You are an unfinished mistake."

"I am aware."

Veyron attacked again.

The false Ethan lifted one finger.

The spell reversed.

Veyron was thrown into the wall.

He struck the stone and collapsed.

Ethan struggled against the chains.

"Veyron!"

The older mage tried to stand.

"Do not look at me."

"Why?"

"Because it will use the memory."

The false Ethan smiled.

Too late.

A chain appeared around Veyron’s chest.

The Archive showed Ethan a memory he had never seen.

Veyron standing before the First Door after Ethan’s death.

His hands were covered in blood.

The bodies of the Seven Heroes lay around him.

The Observer watched through the broken Door.

Veyron held the Ninth Fragment.

He was younger.

Terrified.

Alone.

The false Ethan spoke:

"This is the man you trusted."

Veyron’s face tightened.

"He betrayed you."

"He did."

"He used Elena’s bloodline."

"He did."

"He turned generations into tools."

"He did."

"Why defend him?"

Ethan looked at Veyron.

The memory was real.

Veyron had caused everything.

He had no excuse.

But the choice before Ethan was not whether Veyron deserved forgiveness.

It was whether the false Ethan could use his guilt as another chain.

"Because he is responsible for what he did," Ethan said.

The false Ethan paused.

"He should be punished."

"Perhaps."

"He should suffer."

"Perhaps."

"Then why does he remain alive?"

"Because punishment is not the same as responsibility."

The chain around Veyron cracked.

Ethan continued:

"Veyron does not get to escape what he caused by dying."

The false Ethan’s expression became colder.

"You sound like him."

"No."

Ethan pulled against the chains.

"I sound like myself."

The Identity Fragment brightened.

The chain around Veyron shattered.

Veyron fell to one knee, breathing heavily.

Ethan turned toward the false body.

"You were built from my memories."

"Yes."

"But you do not understand them."

"I understand them perfectly."

"No. You understand what happened."

The silver circle around Ethan’s heart widened.

"You do not understand what I chose afterward."

The false Ethan’s face flickered.

The Archive shook.

The memory chains began to crack.

The perfect body reached toward the Crown Fragment.

"You chose weakness."

Ethan activated the Witness.

The chamber filled with memories.

Not the memories preserved by Darius.

The memories the Archive had ignored.

Noah laughing in a burning classroom.

Elena standing between Ethan and an enemy she feared.

Adrian lowering his sword instead of killing a defeated soldier.

Professor Voss staying behind while everyone escaped.

Lyra holding the White Flame even as it burned her hands.

Rowan choosing his name.

Veyron accepting the guilt he could no longer escape.

The false Ethan looked around.

"These are irrelevant."

"They are the reason I am not you."

The Crown stopped moving toward the false body.

The Witness opened fully.

Knowledge returned.

The Sword formed in Ethan’s hand.

The Identity Fragment surrounded the other fragments.

The false Ethan stepped backward.

The Archive began rejecting him.

The Darius-shaped figure raised the broken sword.

"Do not allow him to remember."

The weapon struck the ground.

A black wave spread through the chamber.

Every memory disappeared.

Noah.

Elena.

The academy.

The second life.

All of it vanished.

Ethan stood alone in darkness.

No past.

No friends.

No name.

The false Ethan appeared before him.

"You see?"

Its voice echoed.

"When memory is removed, there is nothing left."

Ethan looked at the empty darkness.

He could not remember his face.

He could not remember Greymoor.

He could not remember the First Door.

He could not remember the promise he had made.

But something remained.

A feeling.

A direction.

A refusal.

The false Ethan raised his hand.

"You are empty."

Ethan looked at him.

"No."

"You remember nothing."

"I remember that I chose."

"You do not know what you chose."

"I do not need to."

The Identity Fragment pulsed.

A small silver light appeared in the darkness.

Ethan reached toward it.

The light became a voice.

Noah’s voice.

"You are allowed to be afraid."

Another light appeared.

Elena’s voice.

"You do not have to carry everything alone."

A third.

Professor Voss.

"Power without judgment is only destruction."

A fourth.

Lyra.

"Truth is not the same as pain."

A fifth.

Rowan.

"I am my own choice."

The darkness began to fill with voices.

Not memories.

Promises.

Things Ethan had learned from people who had chosen to stand beside him.

The false Ethan covered his ears.

"They are not yours."

"They changed me."

"They weakened you."

"They gave me something you do not have."

"What?"

"A reason to return."

The silver light became a door.

Ethan stepped through it.

He returned to the Archive chamber.

The memories flooded back at once.

The chains around him shattered.

The false Ethan stumbled backward.

The black throne behind him cracked.

Ethan stood free.

The Darius-shaped figure raised the broken sword again.

Ethan moved first.

He crossed the chamber and struck the weapon with his black blade.

The impact shook the Archive.

The two swords locked.

The Darius-shaped figure stared into Ethan’s eyes.

"You were always a vessel."

"I was."

"You were created for a purpose."

"I was."

"You were given power."

"I was."

"Then why do you refuse to use it?"

Ethan pushed the broken sword aside.

"Because the purpose changed."

The Darius-shaped figure attacked again.

Ethan blocked.

The sword carried memories of Darius’s training.

Every strike was designed to punish hesitation.

Every movement was familiar.

Darius had taught Ethan how to fight by breaking his body.

The reconstruction knew all of his weaknesses.

Ethan knew all of its habits.

The black blade struck the figure’s shoulder.

The figure reformed.

The Darius-shaped body could not be defeated through physical damage.

Ethan activated Knowledge.

The Archive showed him the truth.

The Darius pattern had three parts.

The face.

The memory.

The command.

The face belonged to Darius.

The memories belonged to Ethan.

But the command did not belong to either of them.

It came from the First Thought.

**A vessel must have a master.**

The command was the real enemy.

Ethan lowered his sword.

The Darius-shaped figure attacked.

The blade pierced Ethan’s side.

Blood ran across the floor.

Elena’s voice echoed from far away.

"Ethan!"

She was still outside the chamber.

The Archive had separated the group.

Noah shouted something.

Adrian’s sword struck the sealed door.

Veyron was trying to break through.

But Ethan could not hear them clearly.

The command inside the reconstruction became louder.

"Submit."

The false body pulled the sword free.

"Kneel."

Ethan staggered.

"Accept your purpose."

The black throne opened behind him.

Chains rose from the ground.

The First Thought’s command entered his mind.

**Become the vessel.**

Ethan looked at the throne.

The perfect body stood before him.

Darius’s face.

Azeroth’s power.

Ethan’s memories.

A body built to contain everything.

The solution was terrifying because it was efficient.

If Ethan entered the throne, the First Thought would gain a stable vessel.

But Ethan could also use that connection to control the First Thought.

He could end the war.

He could stabilize magic.

He could force the Observer back.

He could create peace.

The false Ethan extended his hand.

"Take the throne."

Ethan looked at it.

The offer was not a threat.

It was a temptation.

The First Thought did not need to force him.

It only needed to show him a way to solve every problem.

Ethan remembered Darius.

Power was protection.

Fear was order.

Control was safety.

He remembered Azeroth.

Sacrifice was necessary.

One person could carry the burden.

One ruler could make the hard choices.

He remembered his second life.

Trust was dangerous.

Friends could be hurt.

People could die.

The easy answer was waiting.

Become the vessel.

Become the king.

End the uncertainty.

Ethan stepped toward the throne.

The false Ethan smiled.

"That is right."

Ethan placed one hand on the black throne.

The Archive began to shake.

The fragments inside him aligned.

The Crown.

The Witness.

Knowledge.

The Sword.

The White Flame.

The Sixth.

The Identity.

The Eighth.

The Ninth.

All of them moved toward the throne.

The First Thought began descending through the chamber.

A black eye opened above Ethan.

**Finally.**

The false Ethan stood behind him.

"Now you will become complete."

Ethan closed his eyes.

Then he smiled.

"I did not say I was accepting."

The false Ethan froze.

Ethan pulled the Crown Fragment away from the throne.

The other fragments followed.

The black eye above him widened.

**You cannot refuse the design.**

"I can refuse the purpose."

Ethan raised the sword.

The blade changed.

It did not glow with eight colors.

It became completely silver.

A blade of identity.

A blade that could cut definitions.

Ethan struck the black throne.

The first cut severed the command.

**A vessel must have a master.**

The throne cracked.

The second cut severed the purpose.

**A vessel must carry power.**

The chains shattered.

The third cut severed the origin.

**A vessel belongs to its creator.**

The black eye screamed.

The false Ethan rushed toward him.

"You will destroy yourself!"

Ethan turned.

"No."

The silver sword struck the false body.

It did not cut the body apart.

It cut the difference between them.

The false Ethan froze.

His face changed.

Darius.

Azeroth.

Ethan.

A child.

A king.

A weapon.

A possibility.

All of those forms flashed across him.

Ethan reached toward his chest.

"You are not my future."

The false figure struggled.

"You need me."

"I need to understand you."

"You cannot destroy me."

"I am not destroying you."

Ethan pulled the silver light from its chest.

"I am giving you a choice."

The false body became a small sphere of black and violet light.

Inside it was everything Ethan had tried to bury.

His desire for control.

His anger.

His fear of weakness.

His willingness to sacrifice.

His hunger for the throne.

The part of him that could become a monster.

The sphere floated between them.

The false Ethan’s voice came from inside it.

"If you release me, I will return."

"I know."

"If you accept me, I will influence you."

"I know."

"If you keep me, you may become what you hate."

"I know."

"Then why?"

Ethan placed his hand over the sphere.

"Because pretending you do not exist did not make me better."

The sphere entered his chest.

The fragments screamed.

The Identity Fragment expanded.

The black and silver symbols merged.

Ethan fell to one knee.

The false Ethan’s voice echoed inside his mind.

**I am still here.**

Ethan breathed heavily.

*I know.*

**You will need me.**

*Perhaps.*

**I will tempt you.**

*Then I will choose again.*

The voice became quiet.

The black throne collapsed.

The Darius-shaped figure stood alone in the chamber.

Without the command.

Without the false identity.

Without the Archive’s purpose.

It looked toward Ethan.

"What have you done?"

Ethan stood slowly.

"I separated the memory from the master."

"You destroyed the design."

"Yes."

"You were meant to become the perfect vessel."

"I am not interested in being perfect."

The figure’s body began to fade.

For the first time, it looked less like Darius.

The face became indistinct.

The voice changed.

It no longer sounded like Ethan’s father.

It sounded like a tired man who had made a terrible choice.

"Then what are you?"

Ethan lowered the silver sword.

"A person."

The figure looked at him.

"That is not enough."

"It has to be."

The reconstruction dissolved.

The broken sword fell to the floor.

It struck the stone once.

Then became ordinary metal.

The Archive chamber went silent.

The sealed door opened.

Elena, Noah, Adrian, Veyron, Rowan, and the Queen entered.

Elena rushed toward Ethan.

"Are you hurt?"

"Yes."

"Seriously?"

"Yes."

"Can you walk?"

"Yes."

"Then you are still impossible."

Noah looked around the chamber.

"Where is the perfect version of Ethan?"

"Gone."

"Completely?"

Ethan looked toward the broken sword.

"No."

Noah sighed.

"I knew you would say that."

Rowan stepped toward the center of the chamber.

The violet crystal in his hands had stopped glowing.

The Observer’s eye remained open.

**The design has failed.**

Ethan looked at it.

"Which design?"

**The First Thought’s original plan.**

"The vessel?"

**The vessel and the successor.**

Veyron turned toward the crystal.

"Then why did the Archive recognize Rowan?"

The golden eye moved toward him.

**Because Rowan was meant to be the first body.**

Everyone became silent.

Ethan looked at Rowan.

"What does that mean?"

The crystal showed a final memory.

A laboratory beneath the world.

The First Thought stood before a massive black heart.

Beside it stood the First Sovereign.

But the First Sovereign was not alone.

A second shape existed inside the heart.

A smaller form.

A child.

The First Thought spoke:

**The first creation will guide the world.**

The First Sovereign answered:

**And the second?**

**The second will become the body.**

The memory changed.

The First Sovereign rebelled.

The fragments were divided.

The body was hidden.

The plan was abandoned.

But the small shape inside the heart remained.

It grew into Rowan.

Ethan looked at the crystal.

"Rowan was not created to become the First Sovereign."

**No.**

"He was created to contain the First Thought."

**Yes.**

Rowan stared at his hands.

The Queen whispered:

"Then the First Sovereign was only a guardian."

Veyron’s face became pale.

"The being we feared was never the final threat."

Ethan looked toward the darkness beyond the Archive.

The First Thought had been watching them.

Waiting for a body.

A body that could contain its entire consciousness.

A body that could move through the world.

A body that could turn magic into thought.

Rowan was that body.

But Rowan had chosen an identity.

He was no longer empty.

The First Thought could not simply enter him.

It would have to overcome the person he had become.

The Observer crystal flickered.

A new message appeared in the air.

**THE FIRST THOUGHT HAS ENTERED THE CAPITAL.**

The palace shook.

Above them, screams echoed through the upper halls.

Queen Maelia turned toward the stairway.

"What is happening?"

The Observer answered:

**The Royal Council has opened every Mana Core in the capital.**

Ethan looked at Rowan.

The violet mark over his heart began glowing.

**The city is becoming a body.**

Black lines spread through the walls.

The Royal Palace trembled.

The First Thought was no longer trying to use one vessel.

It was turning the entire capital into one.

And somewhere above them, thousands of citizens began speaking with the same voice.

**We are ready to think.**
