The Villain's Second Life

Chapter 46: The Memories Beneath the Palace

  • Next Chapter

The shadow climbed out of the darkness.

It wore Darius Veyr’s face.

The same sharp features.

The same gray eyes.

The same expression that had haunted Ethan’s oldest memories.

In its hand was the original broken sword.

Behind it stood dozens of figures made from memories stolen from the Royal Archive.

Kings.

Generals.

Mages.

Children.

Dead heroes.

Dead enemies.

Every one of them had belonged to someone’s past.

Queen Maelia stepped backward.

"They should not be here."

Ethan kept his eyes on the figure carrying the sword.

"Who are they?"

"The Archive’s memories," Veyron answered.

"Memories do not normally walk."

"These are not memories anymore."

The figures moved together.

Their faces were empty, but their bodies carried weapons and spells copied from the people they represented.

One wore the armor of an ancient king.

Another held a staff made from golden light.

A third looked like a younger version of Veyron.

Noah Blake stared at them.

"Are they alive?"

"No," Ethan said.

"Can they be killed?"

"Probably."

"Probably is not becoming more comforting."

The Darius-shaped figure stepped forward.

Its body flickered between flesh and black smoke.

"Welcome to the Royal Archive, Ethan."

Ethan raised his sword.

"You are not Darius."

The figure smiled.

"No."

"Then stop using his face."

"Why?"

"Because he is dead."

"Death does not erase a face."

"It should erase your right to wear it."

The figure examined the broken sword in its hand.

"Your father left more than a body behind."

Ethan’s gaze moved toward the weapon.

Darius’s sword had been broken when Ethan killed him.

The blade had once been used to train him.

To punish him.

To force him to awaken the power inside his soul.

Now the broken weapon radiated a faint violet light.

"What is the Archive?" Ethan asked.

The figure tilted its head.

"A record of everything the kingdoms refused to remember."

Queen Maelia looked toward the dark stairway beneath the palace.

"That is not what the Council told us."

"The Council knows only the upper halls."

"Then who built the lower Archive?"

The figure looked at Ethan.

"Your father."

Darius’s old voice echoed through the palace.

"He built it after he discovered what slept beneath the world."

Ethan felt a chill move through his body.

"The First Thought?"

"No."

"The First Sovereign?"

"No."

"Then what?"

The figure smiled.

"The original design."

The memory figures began moving toward them.

Queen Maelia raised her staff.

A silver barrier appeared across the hall.

The first wave struck it.

The barrier cracked immediately.

"Move!" she shouted.

The guards surrounded the Queen and Lyra.

Elena Frost summoned a wall of ice beside them.

Adrian Cross stepped forward, his golden sword glowing.

Noah pulled his knife from his belt.

Ethan looked at Rowan.

"Stay behind me."

Rowan looked toward the Darius-shaped figure.

"It knows me."

"It knows what you were made from."

"That may be enough."

The figure lifted Darius’s sword.

The memory figures stopped.

"Rowan," it said. "Come below."

Rowan’s violet mark brightened.

"What is below?"

"Your beginning."

"I know my beginning."

"No. You know the story they gave you."

The figure pointed toward Ethan.

"He told you that you were created from the First Sovereign."

Ethan’s expression tightened.

"That is what you are."

"Is it?"

The figure’s body flickered.

"Ask the Archive."

The memory figures attacked.

The hall erupted.

Ethan moved first.

His black sword cut through a memory soldier.

The figure shattered into silver fragments, but the fragments immediately flew back together.

"It reforms," Ethan said.

Veyron struck another with a dark spell.

The spell passed through the figure and hit the palace wall.

"Memories cannot be destroyed by force," Veyron said.

"Then how do we stop them?"

"Make them remember what they are."

Ethan activated the Witness.

The battle slowed.

Each memory figure carried a central recollection.

The king remembered his final defeat.

The general remembered the army he had abandoned.

The young version of Veyron remembered betraying Azeroth.

The memories were not fighting because they wanted to.

They were repeating the last command attached to them.

Protect the Archive.

Stop Ethan.

Preserve the truth.

Ethan understood.

The Archive had turned memories into guardians because it could not trust the living to protect its secrets.

He changed his grip on the sword.

Instead of cutting the next figure, he touched its chest.

The memory opened.

A dead king stood before a burning city.

His army waited for an order.

The king raised his hand.

Then lowered it.

He had ordered his soldiers to retreat, leaving the city behind.

The memory had been preserved as shame.

Ethan spoke to the figure.

"You failed to save the city."

The memory shook.

"But you saved the army."

The figure stopped moving.

"You were not a coward."

Its body began to fade.

"You made a choice."

The memory dissolved into light.

Ethan turned toward the others.

"Do not fight them. Name what they remember."

Elena understood first.

She approached a memory of a young woman holding a broken wand.

"You lost your family," Elena said.

The woman raised her wand.

"But you carried their names."

The figure lowered its weapon.

It vanished.

Adrian faced an armored knight.

"You obeyed an order that destroyed your own kingdom."

The knight froze.

"But you spent the rest of your life trying to undo it."

The armor cracked.

The memory disappeared.

Noah stared at the younger Veyron.

"What am I supposed to say to him?"

Veyron stepped beside him.

"I will do it."

The old memory looked at Veyron.

The two versions of him faced one another.

The younger Veyron held the Ninth Fragment.

The older Veyron had empty hands.

"You believed betrayal would save the world," Veyron said.

The memory raised its weapon.

"You were wrong."

The weapon stopped.

"You still believed you were right."

The younger Veyron’s face twisted.

"That belief destroyed everything."

"Yes."

"Then why do you defend me?"

"I am not defending you."

Veyron looked at the memory.

"I am remembering you."

The younger version shattered.

The remaining figures lost their weapons.

One by one, they dissolved into silver light.

The hall became quiet.

Only the Darius-shaped figure remained.

It stood at the top of the stairs leading underground.

Ethan walked toward it.

"You built this place."

"Darius built the Archive."

"You said he left more than a body."

"He left a pattern."

"What pattern?"

The figure placed the broken sword against the floor.

A black circle spread beneath it.

"Your father believed that identity could be stored."

Ethan looked toward Rowan.

"Stored in what?"

"Memory."

The figure turned toward him.

"Every person leaves behind a pattern in the minds of others. A voice. A face. A fear. A promise. A command."

"You are saying Darius preserved himself through memory."

"I am saying he preserved the possibility of himself."

Ethan stared at the broken sword.

"That is why he could return."

"Not return."

The figure smiled.

"Be reconstructed."

Veyron stepped closer.

"Who reconstructed him?"

The figure looked at him.

"The Archive."

"Archives do not choose."

"This one does."

The floor beneath them opened wider.

A staircase descended into darkness.

At the bottom, violet light pulsed.

Ethan looked at the Queen.

"You knew about this."

Queen Maelia’s face had become pale.

"I knew there was a lower section."

"You knew Darius built it."

"I knew he built something beneath the palace."

"Why did you keep it sealed?"

"Because every ruler who entered the lower Archive came back changed."

"What kind of change?"

"Some lost their memories."

"Some?"

"Some returned believing they were someone else."

Noah swallowed.

"That is an important detail to mention before we go down."

Ethan turned toward the stairway.

"We are going."

Queen Maelia grabbed his arm.

"Ethan, listen to me. The Archive does not show the truth."

"Then what does it show?"

"It shows the version of the truth that someone wanted to preserve."

"Darius."

"Not only Darius."

The Queen looked toward Veyron.

"The lower Archive was opened during the Final War."

Veyron’s face hardened.

"By whom?"

"By the leaders of the Seven Kingdoms."

Ethan looked at him.

"What did they find?"

"Nothing."

Queen Maelia shook her head.

"They found something."

Veyron stared at her.

"What?"

"A record of the First Sovereign’s creation."

The violet light below pulsed again.

Rowan stepped toward the stairway.

The transparent crystal containing the Observer became warm in his hands.

The golden eye inside it opened.

**The lower Archive is not a record.**

Ethan turned toward the crystal.

"What is it?"

**A surviving instruction.**

"Whose instruction?"

The eye flickered.

**The First Thought’s.**

The palace fell silent.

The Darius-shaped figure smiled.

"Now you understand."

Ethan’s grip tightened around his sword.

"The First Thought created the First Sovereign."

"Yes."

"It also left an instruction for what to do if the First Sovereign rebelled."

"Yes."

"And the instruction is inside the Archive."

"Yes."

"What does it say?"

The figure stepped aside, revealing the stairway.

"Come below."

Ethan started down.

Elena followed immediately.

Noah sighed and went after her.

Adrian, Veyron, and Rowan followed.

Queen Maelia remained above with Lyra and the guards.

Ethan looked back.

"You are not coming?"

The Queen shook her head.

"The Archive recognizes the royal bloodline. If I enter, it may seal the palace."

"Then why did you let us enter?"

"Because I have spent twenty years afraid of what is beneath my home."

She looked toward the darkness.

"Someone must finally stop being afraid."

The stairway descended farther than the palace should have allowed.

The walls were covered in ancient writing.

Some symbols belonged to the First Sovereign.

Others belonged to the First Thought.

A third group had been carved later.

Ethan recognized Darius’s handwriting.

The first inscription read:

**POWER MUST HAVE A VESSEL.**

The second:

**A VESSEL MUST HAVE A PURPOSE.**

The third:

**A PURPOSE MUST HAVE A MASTER.**

Rowan stopped beneath it.

"I do not like this place."

"That is reasonable," Noah said.

Ethan touched the wall.

The Knowledge Fragment translated the next line.

**IF THE VESSEL REFUSES ITS MASTER, THE MASTER MUST BECOME THE VESSEL.**

Ethan’s blood ran cold.

Veyron looked at him.

"That is the First Thought’s instruction."

"To become the vessel?"

"To transfer its consciousness into the creation."

Rowan’s violet mark pulsed.

The black circle beneath his heart appeared.

The Observer crystal flashed.

**The First Thought does not need to control the world.**

Ethan turned toward it.

"Then what does it need?"

**A body capable of containing its thought.**

Rowan looked at Ethan.

"Me."

"Not necessarily."

The Darius-shaped figure spoke from below them.

"Not Rowan."

A door opened at the bottom of the stairway.

Beyond it was a circular chamber.

At the center stood a black throne.

Behind the throne floated a massive glass sphere.

Inside the sphere was a human silhouette.

The silhouette had Ethan’s body.

His face.

His eyes.

But it was older.

More exhausted.

Covered in chains.

Ethan stopped breathing.

The figure inside the sphere opened its eyes.

Darius’s voice came from within the glass.

"My son."

Ethan raised his sword.

"You are not real."

The figure smiled.

"I am the memory he preserved."

"Who?"

"Your father."

"Then what is this?"

"A preparation."

The glass sphere opened.

Black liquid spilled across the floor.

The body inside stepped out.

It looked like Ethan.

But it did not move like him.

It carried itself like Azeroth.

The tyrant.

The king.

The man Ethan had tried to leave behind.

Veyron stepped backward.

"No."

The Darius-shaped figure stood beside the body.

"This is not Darius."

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

"Then who is it?"

The body looked at him.

"I am what Darius believed you would become."

Azeroth’s old face smiled.

"I am the perfect version of Ethan Vale."

Rowan’s crystal began to crack.

The Observer’s voice became urgent.

**Do not let them merge.**

Ethan looked at the body.

"What happens if we do?"

The false Ethan lifted one hand.

The black throne behind him opened.

"Then the Archive will complete the original design."

The chamber walls began to move.

Chains extended from the floor.

The fragments inside Ethan’s soul reacted violently.

The Crown.

The Witness.

Knowledge.

The Sword.

The Identity.

All of them were pulled toward the false body.

The Darius-shaped figure spoke:

"Ethan Vale was never meant to be a second life."

The false Ethan stepped closer.

"He was meant to be the final vessel."

The chains wrapped around Ethan’s arms.

The Identity Fragment resisted.

But the chamber recognized the face.

The name.

The memories.

The origin.

The false Ethan reached toward him.

"Come home."

The chamber began pulling their souls together.

And Ethan realized the Royal Archive had not been preserving Darius.

It had been waiting for him.
