The Villain's Second Life

Chapter 45: The Royal Archive

  • Next Chapter

The army did not move.

For the first time since it had reached Greymoor Academy, the soldiers stood without orders.

Their weapons lay scattered across the eastern road. The black crystals buried beneath the battlefield had been removed and placed in sealed containers. Some soldiers refused to touch them. Others stared at the crystals as if they were looking at pieces of their own guilt.

The ritual had failed.

But Ethan Vale knew that failure did not mean safety.

Beneath the Eastern Kingdom’s capital, Darius’s broken sword had begun to glow.

The Royal Archive was waiting.

Ethan stood at the academy’s main gate, watching the soldiers dismantle the remains of the ritual.

Beside him, Rowan sat on the stone steps.

His body was stable, but the violet mark over his heart had not disappeared completely. It now resembled a thin circle divided by a single line.

The same mark Ethan carried.

The Observer crystal rested in Rowan’s hands.

Its golden eye remained open.

"You should rest," Ethan said.

Rowan looked at him.

"You said that after the First Sovereign."

"You were injured."

"You said it after the academy."

"You were injured."

"You said it after the airship."

"You were injured."

Ethan glanced at him.

"You are beginning to notice a pattern."

"I am beginning to suspect that every place we visit is trying to kill us."

Noah Blake, sitting nearby, raised a finger.

"That suspicion is completely reasonable."

Rowan looked down at his hands.

"Do I need to rest?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because your body is still learning how to exist."

Rowan considered this.

"Does everyone have to learn that?"

"Most people do it before they are born."

"That seems inefficient."

Noah nodded seriously.

"Finally, someone understands the flaws in the human system."

Ethan ignored them and turned toward the road.

Veyron stood near the captured Chancellor.

Professor Aurelia Voss was questioning him while Captain Rowan Hale—still injured but conscious—organized the Royal soldiers.

The Chancellor had not resisted.

Perhaps the failed ritual had broken his confidence.

Perhaps he was waiting for another opportunity.

Ethan did not trust either possibility.

Elena Frost joined him at the gate.

"You are going to the capital."

"Yes."

"To the Royal Archive."

"Yes."

"To investigate Darius."

"Yes."

"To walk into the center of the kingdom that just tried to capture you."

Ethan looked at her.

"When you say it like that, it sounds dangerous."

"It is dangerous."

"I know."

"Then I am coming."

"No."

Elena’s eyes narrowed.

"You should stop saying that."

"The capital may be protected by bloodline magic."

"My family’s bloodline is connected to the Royal Palace."

"That is why you should stay away."

"That is exactly why I should come."

Ethan remained silent.

Elena stepped closer.

"If the Royal Archive contains information about the old contracts, I may be able to understand them. If Darius used the Frost bloodline to rebuild himself, I need to know."

"He did not rebuild himself completely."

"Then someone used his memory."

"The Observer said the reconstruction came from the Royal Archive."

"Which means the Archive contains more than history."

Ethan looked toward the distant horizon.

She was right.

The memory of Darius could not have formed a body without an anchor.

Someone in the Royal Archive had preserved more than records.

They had preserved a pattern.

A soul-shaped blueprint.

A memory capable of becoming flesh.

"Fine," Ethan said.

Elena folded her arms.

"That was surprisingly easy."

"It was not."

"It sounded easy."

"I am too tired to argue."

"That is the first intelligent decision you have made today."

Noah approached them with a bag over his shoulder.

"I heard we are going to the capital."

"We are," Ethan said.

"I heard the capital wants us arrested."

"It does."

"I heard there is an underground archive filled with forbidden magic."

"Yes."

Noah nodded.

"Then I am coming."

Ethan looked at him.

"You do not have to."

Noah shrugged.

"I know."

"You could stay at the academy."

"I could."

"You would be safer."

"Probably."

"Then why come?"

Noah glanced at Rowan.

"Because someone has to make sure the two of you do not walk into an ancient archive, touch a cursed object, and accidentally awaken another world-ending entity."

Rowan looked at him.

"Would you know how to stop it?"

"No."

"Then why come?"

Noah pointed at his knife.

"I have a very persuasive argument."

Ethan almost smiled.

Adrian Cross joined them, carrying a repaired golden sword.

"Are we leaving?"

Ethan looked at him.

"You are coming too?"

Adrian nodded.

"My family’s records may be in the Royal Archive."

"Your ancestors were involved in the Final War."

"That is why I need to see what the Archive says."

Ethan studied him.

Adrian’s expression was serious.

Not proud.

Not defensive.

He wanted the truth, even if it ruined the name Cross.

Professor Voss approached from behind.

"You will not enter the capital alone."

Ethan looked at her.

"You are coming?"

"No."

"That sounded certain."

"I am staying here to deal with the academy, the students, the Chancellor, and the army."

She handed him a small crimson crystal.

"This will connect you to me."

Ethan took it.

"If the capital turns against you, break it."

"What happens then?"

"The crystal will release a signal through every remaining academy network."

"And?"

"Every mage who still believes the Royal Council should answer for its actions will hear it."

Noah blinked.

"That sounds like the beginning of a rebellion."

Professor Voss looked at him.

"It is the beginning of accountability."

Noah nodded.

"Much less frightening."

Voss turned toward Ethan.

"Do not trust the Royal Council."

"I do not."

"Do not trust the Archive."

"I do not."

"Do not trust Darius."

"I killed him once."

"That did not stop him."

Ethan’s expression darkened.

Professor Voss lowered her voice.

"Then do not assume that killing him again will solve the problem."

The words remained with Ethan as the group prepared to leave.

Ethan.

Elena.

Noah.

Adrian.

Rowan.

Veyron.

The Observer crystal.

They would travel to the capital using a damaged Royal airship.

Captain Rowan Hale had offered it after discovering that its engines were still functional.

He stood beside the vessel as the group approached.

"I repaired the navigation crystal," he said.

Noah looked at the cracked ship.

"You repaired that?"

"I repaired enough of it."

"That is a dangerous sentence."

Captain Rowan ignored him.

He turned toward Ethan.

"The capital has closed its gates."

"Then we will enter another way."

"The Royal Council has declared the academy an enemy institution."

"Then the council has declared half the eastern army an enemy too."

Captain Rowan glanced toward the soldiers.

Many had removed their royal insignia.

Some had chosen to remain near the academy.

Others were returning to their homes.

"The army is divided," he said.

"Good."

"Is it?"

Ethan looked at the soldiers.

"They are making their own choices."

Captain Rowan nodded slowly.

"Some of them asked to join us."

Ethan studied him.

"For what?"

"To testify against the Council."

"Let them speak."

Captain Rowan looked toward Rowan, the new being sitting inside the airship.

"What happens to him?"

Ethan turned toward the ship.

"That depends on what he chooses."

Captain Rowan followed his gaze.

"He looks like you."

"He is not me."

"I know."

Captain Rowan paused.

"Do you?"

Ethan looked at him.

The question was not hostile.

It was honest.

Ethan glanced at Rowan.

The new being was staring through the window at the sky, holding the Observer crystal carefully in both hands.

"No," Ethan said.

Captain Rowan nodded.

"Then find out before the capital does."

The airship rose above Greymoor Academy.

The students gathered in the courtyard to watch them leave.

Some waved.

Others remained silent.

The academy no longer had a single master.

No single person controlled its barriers or commanded its students.

It was weaker than before.

But it was free.

Ethan watched the damaged towers shrink below them.

The central tower still carried a deep crack where Seraphina had cut the connection to the First Door.

Seraphina herself remained at the academy.

She had not spoken much since the battle.

Before Ethan boarded the airship, she had given him only one warning.

"Do not let the Archive show you the past without asking what it wants you to become."

At the time, Ethan had not understood.

Now the capital appeared ahead.

Eastern Kingdom’s capital, Aurelian City, was built around a massive white palace.

Seven walls surrounded it.

Each wall carried a different magical seal.

The city was brighter than Greymoor.

Cleaner.

More organized.

The Royal Council had gathered thousands of magical crystals around the outer walls.

Each one was aimed toward the approaching airship.

Adrian looked at the defenses.

"The capital has doubled its barriers."

"Since the army left," Veyron said.

"Are they preparing for us?"

"They were preparing before we left the academy."

Ethan looked at him.

"How do you know?"

"I know the Council."

"You served them?"

"I manipulated them."

"That is not the same thing."

"It is often worse."

The airship slowed.

A communication crystal appeared before the deck.

The face of Chancellor Valecrest filled it.

His expression was controlled again.

"You are not permitted to enter Aurelian City."

Ethan stepped forward.

"We are here to access the Royal Archive."

"The Archive is sealed."

"Open it."

"No."

"The reconstruction of Darius came from beneath your capital."

The Chancellor’s expression changed.

"I do not know what you mean."

"You know exactly what I mean."

The crystal flickered.

A second voice entered the connection.

A woman.

Old.

Calm.

"You may enter."

The Chancellor turned sharply.

"Your Majesty—"

The communication crystal expanded.

An elderly woman appeared beside him.

Queen Maelia Aurelian.

Lyra’s mother.

She looked weak, but her eyes were clear.

"The visitors will be granted access to the capital," she said.

"Your Majesty, they are wanted criminals."

"So is half the Royal Council, if the evidence from Greymoor is accurate."

The Chancellor went silent.

Queen Maelia looked toward Ethan.

"Enter through the northern gate."

"Why are you allowing us inside?"

"Because my daughter is with you."

"Is that the only reason?"

"No."

The Queen’s gaze moved toward Rowan.

"Because I have seen the records beneath the palace."

Rowan stood.

The transparent crystal in his hands pulsed.

Queen Maelia’s expression became troubled.

"The First Sovereign was not the first vessel."

Ethan’s attention sharpened.

"What does that mean?"

"It means the Royal Archive contains the history of what came before."

The Queen looked over her shoulder.

"And if Darius has returned, then someone has opened the oldest record."

The communication crystal began to fail.

Before it closed, Queen Maelia said:

"Ethan Vale, do not let Rowan enter the lower Archive."

Rowan looked toward Ethan.

"Why?"

The Queen answered before he could.

"Because the Archive was built to recognize him."

The crystal disappeared.

The airship landed inside the northern gate.

Royal guards surrounded them immediately.

Their weapons were drawn, but they did not attack.

Ethan stepped down first.

Elena followed.

Noah looked around the city walls.

"Everyone is staring at us."

"That is because of Rowan," Adrian said.

Noah glanced at Ethan.

"Some of them are staring at you too."

"Why?"

"Because you are the former greatest villain in history."

Ethan considered that.

"Then they should be staring at Veyron."

Veyron stepped from the airship.

The guards immediately raised their weapons.

Noah nodded.

"Point taken."

Queen Maelia’s guards escorted them through the city.

The streets were crowded.

Citizens watched from behind windows.

Some cursed Ethan.

Some whispered Rowan’s name.

Others held small golden symbols connected to the Royal Council.

The city felt frightened.

Not chaotic.

Organized fear.

That was worse.

The Royal Palace rose above the central district.

Its towers were made from white stone and black crystal.

The main entrance opened before them.

Inside, Lyra’s father lay unconscious in a guarded chamber.

Queen Maelia met them in the central hall.

She wore a white robe covered with silver markings.

Her face was pale, and she leaned on a crystal staff.

Lyra hurried toward her.

"Mother."

Queen Maelia embraced her.

For a moment, she looked like an ordinary mother instead of a ruler.

Then she looked toward Rowan.

"You are the one called Rowan."

"Yes."

"You carry the First Sovereign’s potential."

"I carry a crystal."

The Queen looked at the crystal in his hand.

"Do you know what is inside it?"

"The Observer."

"And do you trust it?"

"No."

"Good."

She turned toward Ethan.

"The lower Archive is beneath the palace."

"Take us there."

Queen Maelia shook her head.

"You cannot enter as a group."

"Why?"

"The Archive recognizes bloodlines, identities, and origins. It will separate you according to what it believes you are."

Ethan looked toward Rowan.

"And him?"

"The Archive will not separate him."

"What will it do?"

The Queen’s voice became quiet.

"It will call him home."

A deep sound echoed beneath the palace.

Not a heartbeat.

A sword being drawn.

Ethan felt the fragments inside his soul awaken.

The Crown.

The Witness.

Knowledge.

The Sword.

The Identity.

Every fragment pointed downward.

Toward the Royal Archive.

Darius’s broken sword was still there.

And someone had just touched it.

Queen Maelia looked toward the floor.

"The Archive has opened."

Veyron stepped closer.

"That should be impossible."

"Why?"

"The lower Archive was sealed before the Final War."

"By whom?"

Veyron looked at Ethan.

"By Darius."

Ethan’s hand tightened around the black sword.

The palace lights went out.

A voice echoed from beneath the floor.

"You finally came home, son."

The stone beneath them split apart.

Black light rose through the palace.

Darius’s voice continued:

"And this time, you will not be the one holding the sword."

A shadow climbed out of the darkness.

It wore Darius’s face.

But in its hand was the original broken sword.

And behind it stood dozens of figures made from memories stolen from the Royal Archive.
