The Villain's Second Life
Chapter 44: The Father’s Return
The Royal Army turned its weapons toward Ethan.
Thousands of magical crystals brightened at once.
The soldiers stood in formation beneath the eastern sky, their faces hidden behind silver helmets. Some looked confused. Others looked terrified. A few lowered their weapons, but the black ritual beneath their feet forced them back into position.
At the center of the army stood Chancellor Armand Valecrest.
Behind him floated a man Ethan had killed centuries ago.
Darius Veyr.
Ethan stared at his father.
The face was the same.
The dark hair.
The sharp cheekbones.
The cold gray eyes.
Even the thin scar beneath his left eye remained exactly where Ethan remembered it.
But the man standing before him was not entirely real.
Violet lines moved beneath his skin.
His body flickered whenever the ritual crystals pulsed.
A magical reconstruction.
A memory given form.
Or something worse.
Darius smiled.
"You kept your promise, son."
Ethan tightened his grip around the black sword.
The blade carried eight colors of light, but none of them moved toward Darius.
"You are not my father."
Darius tilted his head.
"You recognize my face."
"I recognize the man who wore it."
"You remember killing me."
"I remember ending you."
"And yet here I stand."
"That does not make you alive."
Darius’s smile widened.
"Still hiding behind words."
Ethan looked beneath the army.
The ritual circle had changed.
The violet ring was gone, but the black crystals remained buried beneath the soldiers. Their energy now flowed toward Darius instead of Rowan.
The ritual had a new purpose.
It was no longer trying to extract the First Sovereign’s essence.
It was trying to recreate Darius.
A body made from the army’s fear.
A mind made from Ethan’s memories.
A weapon powered by the soldiers’ belief that Darius was real.
Ethan looked toward the Chancellor.
"You brought him back."
The Chancellor’s face had lost all color.
"I did not know what the ritual would create."
"You activated it."
"I was told it would contain Rowan."
Darius glanced toward him.
"Do not blame yourself, Chancellor."
The Chancellor looked at Darius with fear.
"You said you were working for the Council."
"I was."
"You promised the vessel would be destroyed."
"I promised the vessel would be useful."
The Chancellor stepped backward.
Darius raised one hand.
A black thread connected the Chancellor’s chest to the ritual beneath the army.
The Chancellor gasped.
Ethan moved forward.
The Sword Fragment reacted, but Elena Frost caught his arm.
"Wait."
"He is using the Chancellor as an anchor."
"If you cut the thread, you may kill him."
Ethan looked at Darius.
Darius smiled.
"You see? Even now, you hesitate."
Ethan did not answer.
Darius turned toward the Royal Army.
"Soldiers, you were promised protection. You were told this academy sheltered a dangerous creation. You were told Ethan Vale was preparing to reclaim his throne."
His voice carried across the battlefield.
"But your leaders lied."
The soldiers looked at one another.
Darius continued:
"They brought you here to power a ritual."
The buried crystals brightened.
"Your Mana Cores are not protecting the kingdoms."
The ground beneath the army pulsed.
"They are rebuilding me."
A murmur passed through the soldiers.
The Chancellor shouted:
"Do not listen to him!"
Darius looked at him.
"You may continue pretending this is your army."
The black thread around the Chancellor’s chest tightened.
"Or you may tell them the truth."
The Chancellor struggled to breathe.
Darius’s voice became colder.
"The Royal Council knew the First Sovereign would return. They prepared a vessel long ago. They needed a bloodline strong enough to contain it and an army large enough to complete the ritual."
He pointed toward Rowan.
"They believed he was the vessel."
Then he pointed toward Ethan.
"They were wrong."
Every soldier turned toward Ethan.
Darius smiled.
"The true vessel is the one carrying the fragments."
The weapons brightened.
Ethan felt the pressure of thousands of Mana Cores pressing against his soul.
The Crown stirred.
It offered him the ability to dominate the army.
One command.
One word.
Kneel.
The soldiers would fall.
The ritual would break.
But the Crown’s authority would enter their minds.
They would obey because he forced them to.
Ethan rejected it.
Darius noticed.
"You could stop them."
"Yes."
"But you will not."
"No."
"Still pretending to be better than me?"
Ethan looked at the army.
"I am not better than you."
Darius’s expression changed slightly.
"I am different because I know what I am capable of."
"That is weakness."
"No. It is restraint."
"Restraint is what people call fear when they lack the courage to act."
Ethan raised the black sword.
"And control is what cowards call protection when they are afraid people will choose differently."
Darius’s smile vanished.
The army moved.
The first line of soldiers charged toward the academy.
The students behind Ethan raised their weapons.
Professor Aurelia Voss shouted from the gate:
"Hold your positions! Do not attack unless necessary!"
The two forces collided at the edge of the academy barrier.
Ice spread across the ground beneath the Royal soldiers’ feet.
Elena directed the spell, trapping their legs without harming them.
Adrian Cross moved beside her, striking weapons from the soldiers’ hands.
Noah Blake ran along the barrier, cutting the black ritual wires with his knife.
"Ethan!" he shouted. "The crystals are reconnecting!"
Ethan activated the Witness.
The battlefield divided into layers.
He saw the soldiers.
The ritual.
The Chancellor.
Darius.
And beneath all of them, a black structure shaped like a human heart.
The First Thought’s influence had not disappeared.
It was not controlling the army directly.
It had created the idea that one person must be sacrificed to save everyone else.
That idea was powering the ritual.
The soldiers believed they had to capture Rowan.
The Chancellor believed he had to obey the Council.
Darius believed he had to become a body again.
Even Ethan felt the old instinct inside him.
One sacrifice.
One solution.
One person carrying the burden so the rest could live.
The First Thought did not need to speak.
The ritual was built from its logic.
Ethan turned toward Rowan.
"Can you feel the ritual?"
Rowan stood inside the academy barrier, the transparent crystal containing the Observer held against his chest.
"Yes."
"What does it want?"
"To define me."
"How?"
"As a vessel."
"And if it succeeds?"
"I will become what it expects."
Ethan nodded.
"Then do not fight the ritual."
Rowan looked at him.
"What?"
"Let it connect."
Elena glanced at Ethan.
"That sounds like a terrible plan."
"It is."
"You are becoming more honest."
Ethan looked toward Rowan.
"Once it connects, you will choose what the ritual recognizes."
Rowan’s expression tightened.
"What if I cannot?"
"Then we cut the connection."
"And if cutting it kills me?"
Ethan did not answer immediately.
Rowan understood.
"You still do not know."
"No."
"Then I choose to try."
The violet crystal in Rowan’s hand cracked.
A black thread extended from it toward the ritual beneath the army.
The First Thought’s influence rushed through the connection.
Rowan’s body lifted from the ground.
The soldiers stopped fighting.
The entire battlefield became silent.
Darius watched with satisfaction.
"Yes," he said. "That is how it begins."
Violet light surrounded Rowan.
The ritual projected images into the sky.
Rowan standing before the First Door.
Rowan ruling the magical world.
Rowan commanding armies.
Rowan becoming the First Sovereign.
The soldiers saw the images and raised their weapons again.
The Chancellor shouted:
"Do you see? He is becoming a ruler!"
Rowan’s body shook.
The ritual was not showing the future.
It was forcing a definition upon him.
Vessel.
Successor.
Tyrant.
Ethan stepped toward the ritual.
Darius appeared before him.
The reconstructed body was now more solid.
The army’s fear had given him weight.
"You cannot interrupt this," Darius said.
"You are using the soldiers."
"I am using what they willingly offer."
"They do not know what they are offering."
"Neither did you when you were a child."
Darius’s words struck Ethan harder than the magic.
"You remember the laboratory," Darius said.
The battlefield disappeared for Ethan.
He stood inside the old chamber.
The black heart floated in its crystal.
A younger version of himself stood beneath it.
Darius held a broken sword.
"You are a vessel," he said.
Ethan saw the child’s frightened face.
He saw Evelyn standing behind Darius.
He saw the moment he had promised never to become his father.
The memory shifted.
Azeroth stood over Darius’s body.
Darius was dying.
"You became exactly what I made you to be," Darius whispered.
Azeroth raised his hand.
"No."
The memory broke.
Ethan returned to the battlefield.
Darius stood before him.
"You have spent centuries trying to prove me wrong."
"I have spent one life trying to stop becoming you."
"And now you are using my methods."
Ethan looked at the ritual.
Darius continued:
"You are asking Rowan to connect to a system he cannot control. You are using the students as witnesses. You are turning the army’s fear against itself."
Ethan remained silent.
"Do you see?" Darius asked. "You are not different."
Ethan looked toward Rowan.
The First Thought’s definition was spreading through him.
The new being’s violet eyes had turned black.
Ethan heard Rowan’s voice through the ritual.
"I cannot hold it."
Ethan raised his sword.
The easy solution was clear.
Cut the connection.
Destroy the ritual.
Save Rowan.
The price would be Rowan’s life.
Darius waited for him to make the same decision he had always made.
One sacrifice.
One necessary death.
One clean answer.
Ethan lowered the sword.
Darius frowned.
"What are you doing?"
"Refusing."
"You cannot leave him connected."
"I am not leaving him."
"You cannot save him without cutting the ritual."
"Then I will not cut the ritual."
Ethan turned toward the soldiers.
He raised his voice.
"You are being asked to define Rowan."
The army listened.
Darius tried to silence him, but the Crown Fragment spread Ethan’s voice across the battlefield.
"Your ritual is not showing you who Rowan is."
The images in the sky flickered.
"It is showing you what the First Thought wants him to become."
The soldiers looked toward Rowan.
"Ask yourselves who gave the ritual that authority."
The Chancellor shouted:
"Do not listen to him!"
A soldier near the front lowered his weapon.
"Who gave it authority?"
Another soldier looked at the black crystal beneath his feet.
"We did."
Ethan continued:
"No. You gave it power. You did not give it the right to define someone else."
The black threads around Rowan flickered.
The ritual needed agreement.
Not obedience.
Agreement.
Ethan spoke to Rowan.
"Tell them who you are."
Rowan struggled against the black energy.
"I am Rowan."
The images above the battlefield changed.
The First Sovereign disappeared.
The First Thought’s shadow weakened.
Rowan continued:
"I was created from ancient power."
The ritual trembled.
"But I am not its owner."
A black thread snapped.
"I have no childhood."
Another thread broke.
"I have no family."
The violet light around him grew unstable.
"But I have choices."
The ritual cracked.
"I chose my name."
The soldiers watched him.
"I chose to protect the students."
The black heart beneath the battlefield began to split.
"I chose not to rule."
The ritual screamed.
"And I choose to live."
The final image shattered.
The black structure beneath the army collapsed.
The soldiers’ Mana Cores were released.
The ritual circle disappeared.
Rowan fell.
Ethan moved faster than thought and caught him before he struck the ground.
The new being was barely conscious.
His body was human again.
The violet lines beneath his skin had faded.
Darius stared at him.
The reconstructed body was losing its shape.
"You were supposed to become the vessel."
Rowan opened his eyes.
"I became Rowan."
The black threads connecting Darius to the army began to snap.
Ethan looked toward the Chancellor.
The Chancellor dropped to his knees, free from the ritual.
The Royal Army lowered its weapons.
The soldiers were no longer enemies.
They were witnesses to their own manipulation.
Darius’s body flickered.
"You think this is victory?"
Ethan stood with Rowan in his arms.
"No."
Darius looked at him.
"Then what is it?"
"A refusal."
The last black thread broke.
Darius’s body began dissolving.
But before he vanished, he looked toward Ethan.
"You cannot escape me."
Ethan held his gaze.
"I am not trying to escape you."
The reconstruction cracked.
"You are part of my past."
Darius’s face twisted.
"Then I will always be part of you."
"Yes."
Ethan raised the black sword.
"But you will not decide what I become."
He cut the remaining energy around Darius.
The false body shattered into black dust.
The soldiers watched in silence.
No one cheered.
No one celebrated.
The battlefield was filled with exhausted people who had nearly become part of a ritual they did not understand.
Ethan carried Rowan back toward the academy.
Elena met him at the gate.
"Is he alive?"
"Yes."
Rowan opened one eye.
"I heard that."
"Then you are alive enough to complain," Noah said.
Rowan looked toward him.
"I am not complaining."
"You are improving."
Professor Voss approached the Chancellor, who remained kneeling near the broken ritual circle.
"You will answer for this," she said.
The Chancellor looked toward the army.
"I did not know."
"You knew enough to activate it."
"I was trying to protect the kingdoms."
Veyron stepped beside him.
"That is what everyone says after choosing control."
The Chancellor looked up.
"Who was Darius?"
Ethan answered from the academy gate.
"My father."
"Was he real?"
Ethan looked at the black dust scattered across the battlefield.
"He was real once."
"And now?"
"Now he is a memory given a weapon."
The Observer crystal in Rowan’s hand flickered.
The small golden eye opened.
**The reconstruction was incomplete.**
Ethan turned toward it.
"What does that mean?"
**Darius was not brought back by the ritual.**
Veyron’s expression changed.
"Then what was it?"
The crystal showed a vision.
Darius standing in a dark chamber.
Not as a body.
As a memory.
A black hand had placed a silver mark over his chest.
The Observer continued:
**Someone used your memory of Darius to create the reconstruction.**
Ethan felt cold.
"Who?"
The crystal’s golden eye turned toward the eastern horizon.
**The memory came from the Royal Archive.**
Ethan looked at the Chancellor.
The Chancellor shook his head.
"I do not know what you are talking about."
Veyron moved toward him.
"Where is the Royal Archive?"
The Chancellor hesitated.
Ethan saw the answer in his face.
"Under the capital," Ethan said.
The Observer crystal flickered again.
A final image appeared.
A sealed chamber beneath the Eastern Kingdom’s palace.
Inside it stood a black throne.
On the throne rested a single broken sword.
Darius’s sword.
The same sword Ethan remembered ending him with.
Beneath the throne, someone had carved a message into the stone:
**THE SON WILL RETURN.**
Then another line appeared.
**THE FATHER WILL BE READY.**
The image disappeared.
Rowan looked at Ethan.
"Was Darius truly destroyed?"
Ethan stared toward the capital.
"I do not know."
Elena tightened her grip around her sword.
"Then what do we do?"
Ethan looked at the Royal Army.
The academy.
The wounded.
The Chancellor.
The crystal containing the Observer.
The world had not ended.
But the past had found a new way to reach him.
"We go to the Royal Archive."
Veyron shook his head.
"You cannot enter the capital."
"Why?"
"Because the Council will arrest you."
"They already tried to kill us."
"Then they will try harder."
Ethan looked toward the eastern horizon.
The sun was setting.
The army had stopped marching.
The ritual had failed.
But beneath the capital, something had awakened.
Ethan carried Rowan through the academy gates.
Behind him, the soldiers began removing the black crystals from the ground.
Ahead, the students gathered in silence.
No one knew whether the war had ended.
No one knew whether Darius was truly gone.
And beneath the Eastern Kingdom’s capital, a broken sword began to glow.
