The Villain's Second Life

Chapter 48: The New Student

  • Next Chapter

The entire Royal Palace spoke with one voice.

**We are ready to think.**

The words echoed through the upper halls.

Then the palace went silent.

Ethan Vale stood in the lower Archive with his sword drawn, while black lines spread across the stone walls.

The First Thought had opened every Mana Core in the capital.

Not just the soldiers.

Not just the Royal Council.

Everyone.

Citizens.

Guards.

Servants.

Mages.

Even the unconscious King Aurelian.

The capital was becoming a single magical network.

A single body.

A single mind.

Rowan stared at the violet mark over his heart.

"What do I do?"

Ethan looked at him.

"For now?"

"Yes."

"Try not to become the mind of an entire city."

Rowan nodded seriously.

"I will try."

Noah Blake looked at Ethan.

"That is your plan?"

"It is the first step."

"You say that as if there is a second step."

"There is."

"What is it?"

"Leave."

Noah stared at him.

"You want to escape a palace that has become a living magical organism by simply walking out?"

"Yes."

"That is not escaping. That is visiting the exit."

Ethan turned toward the staircase.

"Everyone move."

The black lines on the walls pulsed.

The palace shifted.

The staircase stretched farther into darkness.

Doors appeared where there had been walls.

The Archive was changing according to the capital’s new consciousness.

Professor Voss was not there to guide them.

Seraphina was at Greymoor.

The Royal guards had vanished from the upper halls.

Queen Maelia stood near the entrance, one hand pressed against her chest.

Her eyes were glowing faintly.

"Mother?" Lyra asked.

The Queen looked at her.

For a moment, her expression was normal.

Then a second voice spoke through her.

**The vessel must return.**

Lyra stepped backward.

"Mother?"

Queen Maelia’s eyes returned to normal.

"Go."

"What?"

"Take Lyra and leave the palace."

The black lines climbed her neck.

"Before I lose control."

Lyra shook her head.

"I am not leaving you."

"You are the White Flame. If the First Thought enters you, it will use you to reach every royal bloodline."

"I can help."

"You already have."

The Queen forced herself toward the main doors.

Her hands trembled.

"Go!"

A wave of violet energy exploded behind her.

Ethan grabbed Lyra’s arm.

"Now."

Lyra resisted for half a second.

Then she followed.

They ran through the palace halls.

Ethan.

Elena.

Noah.

Adrian.

Veyron.

Rowan.

Lyra.

The Observer crystal.

And Queen Maelia, who remained behind to delay the living palace.

The halls changed around them.

Statues turned their heads.

Paintings whispered.

The floor opened and closed.

A suit of armor stepped off its stand and raised a spear.

Noah threw his knife.

The spear flew from the armor’s hands.

The armor looked down at its empty palms.

Noah retrieved his knife.

"That was surprisingly easy."

The armor’s helmet turned toward him.

Then six more suits stepped off the walls.

Noah looked at Ethan.

"I take it back."

Ethan drew his black sword.

The armor attacked.

He did not destroy them.

The Sword Fragment cut the magical commands connecting them to the palace.

The armor froze.

Elena covered the floor in ice.

Adrian shattered the frozen weapons.

Noah ran between the suits, kicking their knees.

"Why are you kicking enchanted armor?" Adrian asked.

"Because it keeps working!"

The last suit collapsed.

The palace shook.

Veyron looked toward the ceiling.

"The First Thought is losing control."

"Good," Ethan said.

"No. The palace is resisting it."

"Is that bad?"

"Very."

"Why?"

"Because the palace is older than the capital."

A deep sound moved through the walls.

The palace’s voice changed.

**Protect the Archive.**

The black lines became silver.

The floors stopped moving.

The doors sealed.

Ethan looked at Veyron.

"What did you do?"

"Nothing."

The palace spoke again.

**Protect the original vessel.**

Every eye turned toward Rowan.

Rowan froze.

The transparent crystal in his hands began glowing.

The Observer’s golden eye opened.

**The Archive has selected a priority.**

Ethan stepped in front of Rowan.

"No."

The palace walls opened.

Hundreds of magical weapons appeared in hidden compartments.

Bows.

Spears.

Blades.

All pointed at Rowan.

Noah looked around.

"I liked it better when the building was trying to kill everyone equally."

Ethan raised his sword.

"Stay behind me."

Rowan stepped beside him.

"I can help."

"You are the target."

"I am also the reason it is doing this."

"Exactly."

Rowan looked toward the weapons.

The palace was not attacking because it hated him.

It was following an ancient instruction.

Protect the original vessel.

But the instruction did not recognize Rowan as a person.

Only as a function.

A body.

A container.

A purpose.

Rowan raised one hand.

The weapons began to move.

Ethan caught his wrist.

"What are you doing?"

"Changing the instruction."

"You cannot rewrite the palace."

"I am not rewriting it."

Rowan looked at the crystal.

"I am telling it what I am."

The weapons stopped.

Rowan faced the walls.

"My name is Rowan."

The palace remained silent.

"I am not a vessel."

The silver lines flickered.

"I am not an instruction."

A spear lowered.

"I am not property."

The weapons began disappearing into the walls.

The last sentence echoed through the halls.

"I am a student."

The entire palace shook.

Then the main doors opened.

Sunlight entered.

Noah blinked.

"That worked?"

Rowan looked at him.

"I do not know."

"You sounded very confident."

"I was terrified."

Noah nodded.

"Excellent. You are already becoming a normal student."

They rushed outside.

The capital had become chaos.

People stood frozen in the streets, connected by thin lines of violet light.

Some were conscious.

Some repeated the same sentence.

Some looked toward the palace with blank expressions.

At the center of the city, a massive magical circle covered the sky.

The First Thought was trying to stabilize its connection.

Ethan looked toward the northern gate.

The damaged airship waited there.

Captain Rowan Hale stood beside it with a group of soldiers.

When he saw them, he raised his hand.

"Move!"

They ran.

A golden beam struck the street behind them.

The ground turned into a smooth black surface.

Elena raised an ice barrier.

The beam shattered it.

"Faster!" she shouted.

Noah grabbed Adrian’s sleeve.

"Why are royal palaces always so difficult to leave?"

"Because you keep entering them."

"That is not the point."

Ethan looked toward the palace.

The black lines had reached the roof.

A giant eye began forming above the central tower.

Queen Maelia appeared at one of the upper windows.

She was still standing.

The black lines covered half her face.

She raised her hand.

A white barrier spread across the city.

"Go!" she shouted.

Lyra stopped.

"Mother!"

Queen Maelia smiled.

"Live long enough to return."

The barrier closed between them.

The palace disappeared behind a wall of white light.

Lyra stood frozen.

Ethan grabbed her shoulder.

"We have to go."

She looked at him with tears in her eyes.

"I am leaving her."

"She chose to stay."

"She is my mother."

"And she chose to protect you."

Lyra looked back at the palace.

Then she ran.

They reached the airship.

Everyone climbed aboard.

The engines started with a violent cough.

Noah grabbed the nearest railing.

"If this thing explodes, I am blaming the person who repaired it."

Captain Rowan Hale looked at him.

"That was me."

"Then I am blaming you directly."

The airship rose.

The capital shrank below them.

The white barrier around the palace expanded, sealing the central district.

The First Thought’s voice echoed through the city.

**The vessel has escaped.**

The words appeared across the sky.

**Return to Greymoor Academy.**

Ethan stared at the message.

The First Thought knew where they were going.

Veyron stood beside him.

"Greymoor is no longer safe."

"It is the safest place we have."

"It is a damaged academy filled with students."

"It has Rowan’s identity seal."

"The First Thought can reach it."

"So can we."

Veyron looked at him.

"You still intend to keep him there?"

"I intend to enroll him."

Rowan, sitting near the back of the ship, looked up.

"Enroll?"

"In the academy."

"Why?"

"Because you need to learn how to exist as a person."

"What will I study?"

"Magic."

"I already have magic."

"Control."

"I can control it."

"You almost became the mind of a capital."

Rowan thought about that.

"That was not intentional."

"Neither are most disasters."

Noah leaned across the aisle.

"Do not worry. The academy is simple."

Rowan looked at him.

"What is the first rule?"

"Do not enter restricted areas."

Ethan glanced at him.

"You have entered at least six."

"Exactly. That is how I know the rule."

"What is the second rule?"

"Do not challenge noble students."

Adrian looked at Noah.

"You challenged three."

"They challenged me first."

"You threw a chair."

"He insulted my knife."

Rowan considered this.

"What is the third rule?"

Noah lowered his voice.

"Do not let Ethan near the examination board."

Ethan turned toward him.

"That is not a rule."

"It should be."

Elena sat across from them.

"Why?"

"Because the last time he took a placement test, the measuring crystal exploded."

"I touched it once."

"It screamed."

"It was poorly made."

Adrian looked at Rowan.

"You will get used to him."

Rowan glanced toward Ethan.

"I am not sure which one of them you mean."

For the first time since leaving the capital, Ethan almost smiled.

The airship flew west.

The capital remained behind them, covered in white light.

The immediate danger had not ended.

The First Thought was still connected to the magical network.

The Royal Council was fractured. ℯ𝓵.

Queen Maelia was trapped inside the palace.

Darius’s return remained unexplained.

The Royal Archive had revealed more questions than answers.

But for the first time in weeks, the group was not heading toward a battlefield.

They were heading toward school.

By sunset, Greymoor Academy appeared beyond the hills.

The students had repaired part of the outer wall.

The broken towers had been reinforced with temporary magic.

The main gate carried a new sign.

It had been painted in black letters:

**GREYMOOR ACADEMY**

Beneath it, someone had added:

**NO WORLD-ENDING ENTITIES WITHOUT PERMISSION.**

Noah looked proud.

Ethan turned toward him.

"You wrote that."

"Yes."

"Why is the handwriting terrible?"

"Because the sign was moving."

The airship landed in the courtyard.

Students gathered around it.

Some ran toward Lyra.

Others approached Ethan with questions about the capital.

A few stared at Rowan.

He stepped down from the ship and looked around the academy.

The buildings were damaged.

The training grounds were covered in cracks.

The library was missing half its roof.

But people were laughing.

Students argued over food.

Someone was chasing a floating book.

Two first-year students were fighting over a chair.

Rowan watched everything carefully.

"This place is chaotic."

Ethan stepped beside him.

"Yes."

"Is that normal?"

"No."

Noah raised his hand.

"It is slightly more chaotic than normal."

A bell rang from the central tower.

Professor Voss stood beneath it.

"Students! Gather in the courtyard!"

The crowd slowly formed lines.

Some students whispered about the capital.

Some looked toward Rowan.

Professor Voss held a stack of papers.

"This academy has lost its official connection to the Royal Council."

The students murmured.

"That means the Council no longer controls our curriculum, our barriers, or our admissions."

Noah whispered:

"Does that mean we can stop attending exams?"

Professor Voss looked directly at him.

"No."

Noah lowered his head.

"That was worth trying."

Professor Voss continued:

"Greymoor Academy will remain independent."

The students cheered.

"However, independence requires responsibility. We will not become a military academy, a royal weapon, or a shelter for ancient entities without rules."

Her eyes moved toward Rowan.

Rowan straightened.

Professor Voss held up a document.

"Rowan will be admitted as a first-year student."

The courtyard went silent.

Rowan blinked.

"First-year?"

Noah whispered:

"Congratulations. You are about to learn why everyone hates homework."

Rowan looked toward Ethan.

"What is homework?"

Ethan stared at him.

"Noah."

"What? He asked."

Professor Voss continued:

"He will be placed in Class One-B."

A student raised his hand.

"Professor, is he dangerous?"

"Yes," Professor Voss answered.

The courtyard became tense.

"He is also a student."

Rowan looked down.

Professor Voss’s voice sharpened.

"Any student who attacks him because of his origin will answer to me."

No one moved.

"Any student who treats him as a weapon will be expelled."

The tension eased slightly.

"Any student who expects him to solve every magical crisis will receive extra assignments."

Noah raised his hand.

"Does that apply to Ethan?"

"It applies especially to Ethan."

The students laughed.

Ethan looked at Professor Voss.

"I have not agreed to this."

"You are also being placed in Class One-B."

The laughter became louder.

Ethan stared at her.

"Why?"

"Because you have missed too many classes."

"I was busy."

"You were responsible for three international incidents."

"They were not all my fault."

"Attendance is not concerned with fault."

Elena stepped forward.

"What class am I in?"

"One-B."

Adrian raised his hand.

"And me?"

"One-B."

Noah looked at the group.

"Wait. Are we all in the same class?"

Professor Voss smiled.

"Yes."

Noah turned toward Ethan.

"This is either the best decision or the worst decision in academy history."

"Probably both," Veyron said from behind them.

Professor Voss pointed toward him.

"You are not a student."

Veyron paused.

"What am I, then?"

"The academy has approved you as a temporary historical consultant."

Noah stared.

"That sounds like a polite way of saying he is under supervision."

"It is exactly that."

Veyron looked offended.

"I have taught entire civilizations."

"Then teaching one class should be easy."

Professor Voss handed him a stack of papers.

"Tomorrow morning. History of the Final War."

Veyron looked down at the papers.

"You want me to teach students about a war I started?"

"Yes."

"That is cruel."

"That is education."

The students began dispersing.

Rowan remained in the courtyard.

He looked toward the academy building.

"What happens now?"

Ethan answered:

"Tomorrow, you attend your first class."

"Will the First Thought attack?"

"Possibly."

"Will the Observer escape?"

"Possibly."

"Will someone try to kill me?"

"Probably."

Rowan nodded.

"And what happens if none of that occurs?"

Noah placed an arm around his shoulder.

"Then you will experience the true danger of the academy."

Rowan looked at him.

"What is that?"

Noah pointed toward the main hall.

"Exams."

Rowan’s expression became more frightened than it had been during the First Thought’s attack.

Ethan looked toward the central tower.

For a moment, everything seemed normal.

Then the Observer crystal in Rowan’s bag opened one golden eye.

A tiny message appeared across its surface.

**NEW STUDENT REGISTERED.**

Beneath it, a second line formed.

**ORIGIN: UNKNOWN.**

Ethan frowned.

The crystal flickered.

A third line appeared.

**FIRST CLASSROOM: ROOM 13.**

Ethan looked toward Professor Voss.

"There is no Room 13."

Professor Voss’s expression changed.

"That is impossible."

The bell rang again.

Somewhere inside the academy, a door opened.

A student screamed.

Then another message appeared on the crystal:

**THE ARCHIVE HAS FOLLOWED YOU HOME.**

Ethan drew his sword.

Noah sighed.

"It was nice having an ordinary moment."

Elena raised her sword.

Rowan looked toward the dark corridor.

"Is this part of academy life?"

Ethan stared at the door marked with a number that should not exist.

"Apparently."

The door opened wider.

And from inside Room 13, someone whispered Ethan’s name.
