The machine grew louder as Rhaevia crossed the threshold into the dark, hidden chamber. Cold air brushed against her face, carrying a faint metallic scent that reminded her of laboratories long abandoned by human civilization.

Golden lights flickered along the obsidian walls, gradually illuminating a facility considerably larger than the temporary research room behind them.

Rows of towering crystalline pillars extended toward the vaulted ceiling, pulsing with dormant power. Between them stood enormous preservation tanks, their thick, transparent surfaces clouded by centuries of accumulated frost and ice.

Some of the tanks were empty. Others had shattered violently from within, their jagged edges pointing outward into the dark aisle.

Rhaevia stopped before the nearest shattered tank, examining the deep fractures spreading across its base. "These containers weren’t damaged by external impact," she murmured, tracing a frozen crack with her gloved finger. "Something inside them tried to escape."

Raevor moved ahead of her, his energy rifle raised in a low, ready position. "Stay behind me until we’ve confirmed the chamber is fully secure."

"Of course, General," she replied, her voice smooth and obedient.

He glanced back at her over his shoulder, his silver eyes narrowing. "That sounded remarkably unconvincing."

"I thought it sounded rather genuine," she offered, a faint smile touching her lips.

Despite his suspicious expression, Raevor remained close enough to intercept any immediate threat that might emerge from the shadows. Two heavily armed soldiers followed them into the high-vaulted chamber, while the remaining personnel secured the main entrance behind them.

Rhaevia barely noticed the military precautions around her. Her scientific attention had already settled entirely on the single intact preservation tank situated at the center of the hall.

Unlike the fractured containers surrounding it, this crystalline tank remained whole. Intricate golden lines covered its polished exterior, connecting directly to several energy conduits embedded deep within the metallic floor.

A translucent, iridescent fluid filled the container, surrounding an unfamiliar organism suspended in its center. Rhaevia approached the glass with slow, measured steps.

"What exactly is that?" Raevor asked, stepping beside her while keeping his rifle focused on the glass.

"That’s what I’m going to find out," she said, raising her wrist.

She activated the portable medical scanner attached to her left arm. A series of complex readings immediately materialized in mid-air above the device, displaying the organism’s molecular composition, internal energy circulation, and unique cellular structure.

Then the scanner produced an error chime.

Rhaevia frowned, cleared the prompt, and systematically repeated the spectral analysis. Another error signal flashed red across the interface.

"That’s unusual," she noted, her interest piqued.

"Is it dangerous?" Raevor asked immediately, his posture tensing.

"Potentially," she conceded, tapping the interface to recalibrate the sensor array. "But I can’t determine threat levels from a failed scan."

She adjusted the scanner’s operational frequency, forcing it to analyze the organism through multiple non-standard energy spectrums.

The resulting data stream appeared in layered holograms, revealing an incredible biological specimen composed of translucent crystalline structures closely interwoven with delicate biological tissue. It was not entirely mineral in nature. Nor was it purely biological.

The organism resembled a small, curled creature, its fragile body protected by smooth, overlapping crystal plates. Fine, luminous filaments extended from its slender torso, branching through the suspension fluid like the glowing roots of a miniature tree.

Rhaevia leaned closer against the glass barrier. "Look at these internal pathways. They’re functioning simultaneously as a circulatory system and an energy-distribution network."

Raevor examined the floating blue readings over her shoulder. "Meaning?"

"Meaning this organism might not consume physical matter the way ordinary living creatures do," she explained softly.

She expanded the detailed spectral analysis across the main display. The preservation tank was actively drawing microscopic quantities of ambient radiation from the surrounding environment.

Rather than allowing that ambient energy to dissipate into the room, the creature’s crystalline structures continuously absorbed it and distributed it throughout its biological core.

Even in its dormant state, the organism was passively collecting stellar energy from the deep space surrounding the fortress.

Rhaevia’s eyes widened as the calculations finalized. "That’s incredible."

She quickly summoned the primary Project Genesis interface with a sweep of her hand. "Compare this organism’s internal energy circulation with the sealed biological records in the ancient archives."

The system processed the complex query in silence before flashing its response:

[UNKNOWN BIOLOGICAL ORGANISM DETECTED.]

[MODERN SPECIES DATABASE: NO MATCH.]

[ANCIENT ARCHIVE COMPARISON: IN PROGRESS.]

Rhaevia watched the numerical readings fluctuate rapidly as the archive cross-referenced the specimen. A new holographic diagram appeared before her, mapping the organism’s precise energy conversion process in vivid detail.

Stellar radiation entered through the outer crystalline plates, passed through a dense network of specialized biological cells, and emerged as a highly concentrated form of pure life energy.

Her heart began to race against her ribs as she realized the true scope of the discovery. "It directly converts stellar energy into biological energy," she whispered.

Raevor’s analytical expression sharpened instantly. "Naturally?"

"Apparently so," she said, her eyes devouring the data streams. "Its crystalline structures collect raw stellar radiation, while its biological tissues transform that energy into something the physical body can actually use."

She studied the glowing diagram with rapidly growing fascination. "If we can understand the underlying mechanism, it could fundamentally change how human civilization approaches energy production, cellular regeneration, and even long-term survival in hostile deep-space environments."

"And if someone weaponized the process?" Raevor asked.

Her bright smile faded slightly, replaced by a cool, pragmatic realism. "Then the military implications would be considerably more dangerous."

For several tense seconds, neither of them spoke, the weight of his question hanging between them. Beyond the glass of the preservation tank, the vast chamber remained silent.

Yet the ambient sensor readings on her wrist continued to climb steadily, suggesting that the organism’s dormant internal systems were becoming increasingly active.

Rhaevia noticed the subtle shift in energy first. "Wait."

The delicate crystalline filaments inside the translucent liquid had begun to pulse with light. A faint golden wave of energy traveled smoothly through the creature’s body, illuminating its translucent armor plates one after another in rapid succession.

The thick fluid surrounding its body rippled softly, although no external pump or mechanical force had disturbed the sealed container.

Raevor immediately shifted his weight and brought his rifle up. "Rhaevia, step away from the tank."

"Something is happening to its internal energy circulation," she said, ignoring his order to observe the phenomenon up close.

"That isn’t a valid reason to stand closer," he insisted, his tone leaving no room for argument.

She reluctantly moved half a step backward, though her gaze remained firmly locked on the awakening specimen. The Project Genesis interface above her arm suddenly flickered violently with new alerts:

[STELLAR ENERGY ABSORPTION: ACTIVE.]

[CONVERSION INTO BIOLOGICAL ENERGY: CONFIRMED.]

[ORGANISM AWAKENING DETECTED.]

The massive preservation tank emitted a deep vibration that echoed through the surrounding metal floor. A crack echoed through the room as a visible fracture appeared across the tank’s outer crystalline shell.

Then another crack shattered the surface logic.

Raevor immediately stepped directly in front of Rhaevia, positioning his armored body as a physical shield between her and the glass. "Everyone, prepare containment protocols!"

The accompanying soldiers raised their weapons, locking their sights on the tank as the golden light inside intensified dramatically.

The creature’s curled, dormant body slowly unfolded within the fluid, revealing several delicate limbs and an exquisite, crown-like arrangement of clear crystals surrounding its head.

Rhaevia stared around Raevor’s shoulder, unable to conceal her profound astonishment.

The organism lifted its slender head within the liquid. A single, large luminous eye opened slowly in the center of its face. It was golden, bright, and filled with disturbing intelligence. The creature turned its gaze through the glass and looked directly at Rhaevia.

Every light fixture across the vast chamber flashed in unison. Then, a distinct voice echoed clearly inside Rhaevia’s mind, gentle and unmistakably clear.

"Creator."

Rhaevia froze, her breath locking in her chest.

The creature slowly pressed its translucent crystalline limbs against the inner surface of the cracking tank wall.

"You have finally returned."

A final, golden system notification materialized directly before her eyes:

[ANCIENT BIOLOGICAL LIFEFORM: AWAKENED.]

[CREATOR RECOGNITION: CONFIRMED.]

And for the first time since setting foot inside the dead star fortress, Rhaevia realized with a chill that she might not be the only surviving creation of her forgotten past.
