The planet beneath the dead star fortress possessed no official designation in the Empire’s astronomical records. It hung in the black expanse like a forgotten jewel, shrouded in a veil of shimmering atmospheric dust.

From the expedition shuttle’s wide observation window, Rhaevia watched the unfamiliar world slowly emerge from the shadows. Vast stretches of dark, unmapped terrain covered the surface, interrupted only by luminous formations that glittered brilliantly beneath the pale afternoon light.

At first, she mistook the vast white formations for frozen mountain ranges. Then the shuttle descended steeply through the cloud deck, revealing an endless, breathing forest of solid crystal.

Rhaevia leaned forward against the cool glass, her eyes widening in sheer disbelief. "That’s impossible," she whispered.

General Raevor Veyr glanced sideways at her from his seat, his sharp eyes catching her reflection in the glass. "What is?"

"The entire planetary forest is made of crystal," she explained, pointing down toward the canopy.

Towering crystalline formations rose from the dark soil like colossal trees, their translucent, geometric branches spreading across the horizon.

Some of the giant crystals glowed with a pale blue inner light, while others shimmered in brilliant shades of violet, silver, and gold. Their faceted surfaces caught and refracted the afternoon light, creating vivid rivers of color that flowed steadily across the alien landscape.

Between the massive crystalline trunks, smaller formations clustered thickly around the base roots, their delicate, glass-like structures closely resembling petrified leaves and flowers. It was breathtakingly beautiful and scientifically extraordinary.

"Pilot, reduce our descent speed immediately," Raevor ordered through the comms, his voice steady and calm. "I want an environmental scan before anyone steps out onto the surface."

"Understood, General," the pilot confirmed, adjusting the atmospheric thrusters.

The shuttle slowed its forward momentum as its long-range sensor arrays swept across the shimmering forest canopy below. Rhaevia immediately brought up the live telemetry on her wrist console, her fingers tapping rapidly against the holographic display.

Complex energy levels fluctuated wildly across the screen, revealing a concentrated buildup of raw stellar radiation far beyond anything recorded on an ordinary habitable planet.

She expanded the detailed data streams to verify the numbers. Then she simply stared at the results in awe.

"General, look at this," she urged, waving him closer.

Raevor moved smoothly to her side, leaning down to read the glowing figures hovering over her wrist.

"The crystals are actively absorbing raw stellar energy directly from the upper atmosphere," she explained, her thumb highlighting the energy distribution map. "And they aren’t merely absorbing it. They are stably storing the energy deep within their crystalline lattice structures."

"Like a massive, naturally occurring power grid?" he asked, studying the dense energy readings.

"Exactly," she confirmed, opening a secondary molecular analysis window.

The stored energy remained stable despite the planet’s wildly fluctuating atmospheric conditions. Unlike conventional human technology, these natural crystal formations appeared fully capable of retaining immense power reserves indefinitely, requiring no mechanical maintenance.

Rhaevia’s mind raced through the vast scientific implications. If this natural storage mechanism could be understood and artificially replicated, entire frontier settlements could operate indefinitely without needing traditional power plants.

Remote military bases and distant colonies could harvest pure, clean energy directly from their surrounding environment.

A civilization’s heavy dependence on finite, expensive fuel resources would be fundamentally transformed forever.

"This single discovery could rewrite the future of interstellar colonization," she murmured softly under her breath.

Raevor turned his attention back to the sweeping landscape below, his expression hardening with realism. "Which is precisely why we won’t announce its existence to the Imperial Senate until we’ve established security over this sector."

Rhaevia offered him an approving smile. "You’re getting remarkably better at thinking like a field researcher."

"I’ve been forced to spend far too much time around one," he countered smoothly.

"Is that a formal complaint, General?" she teased, tilting her head.

"No," he answered instantly.

His response came so fast that Rhaevia let out a soft laugh, her eyes brightening.

Before either of them could say more, the pilot’s voice echoed through the cabin: "We have reached the designated landing zone."

The shuttle descended smoothly toward a broad, open clearing surrounded by towering crystalline formations. Its heavy landing gear touched down on the dark, rich soil with a muted thud, and the thrusters gradually whined down into silence.

The expedition team unsealed the main hatch and disembarked several minutes later.

The moment Rhaevia stepped out onto the planet’s surface, a cool, refreshing breeze swept through the crystalline forest.

The glass-like branches chimed softly as they brushed against one another, producing a delicate, melodic sound that echoed through the air like thousands of distant wind chimes.

She unclipped a portable geological scanner from her belt and walked toward the nearest towering formation. Its primary trunk was easily twice her height, with translucent root systems extending deep beneath the dark soil.

Bright golden veins pulsed faintly inside the crystal core, carrying stored stellar energy through its intricate internal network. She activated the scanner and pointed it at the glowing trunk.

"Surface temperature is stable," she noted aloud, reading the output. "No detectable toxic emissions in the air. Energy storage capacity..." She froze, blinking rapidly at the screen before recalibrating the device. "This can’t possibly be accurate."

Raevor came up behind her, his hand resting casually near the grip of his sidearm. "Another impossible reading?"

"Apparently, this planet specializes in breaking theoretical limits," she replied, adjusting the scanner’s sensitivity to maximum.

The staggering numbers remained unchanged.

Each individual crystalline tree was not an isolated organism. It functioned as a tiny node within a vastly larger planetary grid, distributing energy through interconnected roots buried deep underground.

Individual crystals gathered power, but together they formed an active, planet-scale power distribution network. It wasn’t merely a forest. It was a massive, living super-organism.

Rhaevia crouched low beside a smaller, delicate crystal sprouting near the base of the giant formation. When she brought her bare hand within an inch of its surface, the crystal suddenly flared brighter, reacting instantly to the gentle ambient aura of her Sovereign energy.

A soft, golden pulse traveled smoothly through its faceted surface in response.

She smiled softly at the reaction. "Fascinating. They can actually sense and recognize specific energy signatures."

Raevor took a step closer, his eyes fixed on the glowing crystal. "Specific signatures?"

"Mine, at the very least," she said.

She extended her hand further and touched the crystal directly, allowing a faint thread of golden Sovereign energy to flow from her fingertips. The surrounding formations immediately answered, sending a subtle, brilliant shimmer rippling through the glass canopy overhead.

When she withdrew her hand, the forest gradually settled back into its peaceful, glowing state.

Rhaevia stood up, dusting off her knees.

"We need to establish a permanent research outpost here as soon as possible. I’ll need geological specialists, energy grid analysts, and a full survey team to map the underground root network. If these formations can be harvested sustainably, this territory could easily fuel a thriving frontier colony."

Raevor turned to face the armed escort squad. "Begin establishing a secure perimeter. No one touches or samples the larger formations without explicit authorization from the research lead."

"Understood, General!" the soldiers chorused, dispersing into a formation around the shuttle.

Raevor turned back and took a single step toward Rhaevia.

In an instant, the ambient sound in the forest died. The delicate, chiming music of the glass branches abruptly stopped.

Every crystalline branch froze rigidly in place, and the deep golden veins buried beneath the soil suddenly ignited with blinding intensity.

Rhaevia’s smile vanished instantly.

A deep vibration rolled through the bedrock beneath their feet, shaking the dark soil.

"General..." she whispered, looking down.

Raevor lifted his right hand in shock. A dense aura of silver Sentinel energy had gathered around his fingers, surging out of his body involuntarily in response to the sudden environmental shift.

The entire forest exploded in a blinding flash of light.

Thousands of colossal crystalline trees ignited simultaneously from their deep roots to their highest branches, sending massive, blinding shockwaves of silver energy cascading across the landscape.

Rhaevia felt the massive energy surge rushing upward beneath her boots. But it wasn’t reacting to her Sovereign aura.

It was reacting directly to Raevor.

A series of bright warning chimes chimed repeatedly on her wrist console, red text flashing across the screen:

[UNKNOWN PLANETARY NETWORK ACTIVATED.]

[FOREST-WIDE ENERGY RESPONSE DETECTED.]

[PRIMARY TRIGGER: SENTINEL ENERGY SIGNATURE.]

Rhaevia turned toward Raevor, her heart hammering against her ribs.

The giant crystal trees were physically leaning inward toward him. One by one, their luminous, faceted branches bowed low toward the ground until the entire infinite forest seemed to bend its knee before him.

Then, a low, resonant voice reverberated through the earth itself, powerful and unmistakable:

[ANCIENT SENTINEL SIGNATURE RECOGNIZED.]
