The Trash Guide Awakens: The Youngest General's Hidden Wife

Chapter 108: The Researcher and the General

  • Next Chapter

Morning arrived without sunlight. Inside the ancient, dead star fortress, there was no natural dawn to mark the steady passage of time.

Instead, the automated lighting systems gradually brightened the cold metallic corridors, bathing the once-shadowed structure in a soft, golden ambient illumination.

Rhaevia had barely noticed the shift in illumination. She stood in the center of a vast chamber several levels beneath the fortress’s entrance, surrounded by holographic displays, crystalline samples, and dismantled components extracted from the walls.

The chamber had originally served as an advanced technical facility, but she had already efficiently transformed it into a temporary research laboratory.

Three full hours had passed since the ancient fortress recognized her soul signature as its original creator. She had not slept a single minute during that time. She had not even bothered to finish her very first cup of coffee, which now sat stone-cold on a nearby console.

"Your Highness," a military technician called out, stepping around a cluster of exposed wiring. "We’ve completed the preliminary environmental assessment. The chamber is structurally stable, and the internal air composition is suitable for human habitation."

"Excellent," Rhaevia replied without looking away from her work, her fingers flicking across a glowing projection. "Install the additional long-range scanners near the eastern wall immediately. I want a complete molecular analysis of those crystalline circuits before we attempt to activate them again."

"Yes, Your Highness," the technician confirmed, bowing before turning to carry out the orders.

Rhaevia turned back toward the floating central display, her dark eyes gleaming with intense scientific fascination. The fortress’s underlying technology was unlike anything produced within the modern Empire.

Its intricate energy pathways did not merely transmit electrical power. They actively responded to consciousness, dynamically adapting their physical structure according to the unique energy signature of whoever interacted with them.

Project Genesis operated on remarkably similar core principles. However, the underlying mechanisms present in this fortress appeared far more sophisticated and ancient.

"Interesting..." she murmured softly to herself, tapping her chin in deep thought.

She enlarged a complex schematic diagram with a pinch of her fingers and immediately began cross-referencing it with the records retrieved from Project Genesis.

Several structural pathways aligned with perfection, while others contained dense, additional layers of information that the archive interface had never previously displayed. Her fingers moved rapidly across the glowing interface, separating the layered code into distinct streams.

"If this primary circuit regulates spatial energy, then this secondary network must function as an internal stabilizer," she reasoned aloud, her brow furrowed. "But why would the original architects connect a power stabilizer directly to a consciousness-responsive interface?"

She leaned closer to the projection, her face illuminated by golden light, absorbed in solving the multi-layered puzzle.

Behind her, General Raevor Veyr stood near the doorway, watching her with a mixture of admiration and growing concern. The youngest major general in imperial history had faced massive enemy fleets, deadly Zerg swarms, and terrifying entities capable of threatening whole star systems.

Yet none of those combat experiences had prepared him for protecting a brilliant researcher who could forget her own physical limits the moment she found an unsolved mystery.

"Rhaevia," Raevor spoke up, his deep voice carrying clearly across the laboratory.

"Hmm?" she hummed abstractedly, not turning her head.

"Eat something," he commanded gently, stepping toward her workstation.

"In a moment," she replied, her eyes continuing to track a line of ancient code scrolling across the screen.

"You said that forty minutes ago," he reminded her, stopping just beside her desk.

"Did I?" she asked, blinking as if noticing his presence for the first time.

"Yes," he confirmed flatly.

She paid his stern expression no mind and immediately continued examining the holographic display.

Raevor closed his eyes briefly, exhaling a breath as if reconsidering every decision that had brought him into this room. He adjusted his collar and folded his arms across his chest.

"Researcher Rhaevia Rythundeir," he said, adopting an unnaturally formal military tone. "This is a direct order from the commanding officer officially responsible for your security."

That formal title finally earned him a glance, her lips curving upward at the corners. "Oh? And what does the commanding officer require?"

"Breakfast," he stated plainly.

She stared up at him in brief disbelief. Then a musical laugh escaped her lips, breaking the atmosphere of the laboratory.

"You’re actually using military authority to force me to eat?" she asked, shaking her head playfully.

"I’m using common sense to prevent my primary asset from collapsing in front of an ancient machine," he countered smoothly, his silver eyes fixed on her.

"I wouldn’t collapse," she scoffed softly.

"You nearly walked straight into a support pillar ten minutes ago," he noted with deadpan accuracy.

"That pillar was poorly positioned," she insisted without missing a beat.

Raevor simply looked at her in silent, stoic judgment.

Rhaevia’s smile widened at his refusal to back down. "Fine. I’ll eat something."

He immediately raised his hand, signaling a waiting soldier near the entrance to bring forward the prepared ration tray.

She accepted the steaming bowl of nutrient broth, but instead of sitting down at the dining table, she immediately carried it right back toward the central holographic array.

Raevor’s expression darkened instantly. "Rhaevia." 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

"What? I’m eating," she pointed out innocently, taking a small sip from the bowl.

"You’re standing directly over a dismantled energy regulator while holding liquid food," he pointed out, stepping forward to intercept her.

"Multitasking is an essential scientific skill," she countered, dodging his reach with a graceful step.

"Not when your breakfast ends up spilled inside priceless ancient equipment," he said sternly.

She finally gave in to his persistence and walked over to sit properly at a nearby clean workstation, looking far too pleased with herself.

For the next few minutes, a comfortable atmosphere settled over the laboratory. Rhaevia ate between taking visual observations, occasionally muttering complex spatial calculations under her breath while tapping the desk.

Raevor remained posted near the chamber’s entrance, reviewing real-time security reports on his hand console while keeping her safely within his line of sight.

Every few seconds, his gaze naturally drifted back to where she sat. He had quickly learned that protecting Rhaevia required far more than guarding her against external enemies.

She was the type of person who would willingly walk straight into catastrophic danger if she believed the answers waiting inside were important enough. And somehow, that stubborn, unyielding determination only made him admire her all the more.

"General," she called out suddenly, setting her empty bowl down.

Raevor immediately snapped his head up, his posture instantly rigid. "What happened?"

"Nothing dangerous," she reassured him quickly, waving a hand. "I wanted to ask whether you could step over here for a moment."

He crossed the length of the laboratory in several swift strides, arriving at her side.

Rhaevia pointed toward a freshly rendered holographic diagram hovering between them. "Look at this specific energy pathway. The system continuously shifts its configuration whenever I approach it, but the harmonic pattern becomes significantly more stable the moment you walk nearby."

Raevor studied the flickering lines of light attentively. "Because of our resonance?"

"Most likely," she agreed, leaning into his side to look at the numbers. "Our combined energy signature may be directly interacting with the fortress’s dormant spatial network."

She tilted her head thoughtfully, a familiar mischievous glint entering her dark eyes. "I need to test it under strictly controlled conditions."

"How controlled?" he asked guardedly.

"Very controlled," she replied smoothly.

He regarded her with heavy suspicion, his eyes narrowing slightly. "That answer does not inspire military confidence."

She grinned up at him brightly. "You can stand right beside me the entire time."

"I was planning to do that regardless of your permission," he reminded her dryly.

For a brief moment, their eyes met, and the playful teasing expression on Rhaevia’s face softened into something far warmer.

Before she could offer a response, a deep, metallic thud reverberated violently through the bedrock beneath the laboratory.

Both of them snapped their attention toward the back of the room simultaneously.

At the far end of the chamber, a section of what had appeared to be a solid, seamless alloy wall had begun to pulse with blinding light.

Intricate golden symbols materialized rapidly across a massive circular door, a hidden portal that neither the initial reconnaissance team nor the flagship’s sensors had ever detected.

Rhaevia immediately rushed back to the primary display console, her fingers moving rapidly over the keys. "That door wasn’t registered on any structural scan."

The Project Genesis interface activated spontaneously in mid-air, its golden text flashing in rapid sequence:

[UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS: REVOKED.]

[CREATOR AUTHORITY: RECOGNIZED.]

[SEALED RESEARCH FACILITY DETECTED.]

Raevor moved swiftly to her side, his posture lowering into a stance as his hand rested firmly against the grip of his sidearm. "Is it opening?"

Rhaevia watched in fascination as the golden symbols raced around the outer rim of the mechanism.

A heavy, industrial lock disengaged with a resounding metallic clack deep inside the wall. Then a second lock gave way. Then a third.

The enormous circular door slowly unsealed and pulled back from its frame, hissingly venting a cloud of freezing cold air from the dark expanse beyond.

A final golden notification materialized directly before Rhaevia’s eyes:

[SEALED LABORATORY: ACCESS GRANTED.]

She stared into the newly revealed, pitch-black passage, her boundless scientific curiosity instantly overwhelming every ingrained protective instinct telling her to retreat.

"General," she whispered softly, her hand reaching out toward the dark doorway, "I think we just found the real reason this fortress was built."

From deep within the newly opened abyss, the low, rising sound of a machine powering on began to echo through the dark.
