The More I Invest in My Wives, the Stronger I Become
Chapter 81: Chains Over Ashford
Evening traffic filled Ashford City like every other workday.
Cars packed the main roads. Office workers poured toward stations. Streetlights flickered on one by one as the sky turned deep orange. For a moment, the city still belonged to ordinary people.
Then a shadow passed over the towers.
People looked up.
A white dragon flew above Ashford.
Not a dungeon wyvern. Not a mid-rank beast report. A true high dragon, body long enough to match the tallest buildings, wings wide enough to blot out whole blocks of sky.
Its scales caught the dying sunlight like frozen metal. Every beat of its wings pushed hot air down into the streets.
Panic spread in seconds.
Cars stopped. Horns blared. People ran for cover. Media drones shot upward from every direction. Phones lifted. Screams rolled between the buildings.
This had not happened in a hundred years.
Not since the first Dungeon Breaks.
The white dragon was not hunting people on purpose. It was not carefully choosing targets. It simply flew through the city with too much size and too much force.
Its wings clipped glass towers. Its tail smashed through elevated rails. Its claws tore open the tops of offices as it passed. Buildings cracked. Windows exploded outward. Debris rained into the streets below.
WHA alerts screamed across every hunter channel.
Apex alerts followed.
Every available hunter in the region got the same message
White dragon over Ashford City. Engage immediately.
Daemon ran through the chaos with Victoria and Sana beside him.
"You have to stop her now," Victoria said, voice sharp over the alarms. "If you don’t, this leaves our hands. Every hunter in the city is going to treat her like a calamity. Some will try to kill her."
Daemon’s jaw locked.
"I know."
"Victoria," he said quickly. "Use your blood wings. Fly me to her."
Victoria did not argue.
Crimson wings burst from her back in a spray of blood-light. She grabbed Daemon’s arm and launched upward, cutting through smoke and rising heat.
Sana sank into the long shadow of a transit tower and followed them in a streak of darkness, reappearing from rooftop to rooftop as they climbed toward the dragon.
Kassia did not stop.
She flew straight through the central district, another building tearing open under her wingtip.
Then a figure landed on a nearby tower roof.
Jace Harlow.
Young. Apex S-Rank. Already known inside elite circles as a prodigy who climbed too fast. In his hands was a long chain wrapped in living fire, links glowing white-hot as they extended under his control.
He did not hesitate.
The burning chain shot out like a striking serpent.
It wrapped around the white dragon’s neck first. Then another length snapped around her front legs. The fire along the links flared harder, locking tight with a force that made the air scream.
Kassia’s flight broke.
Her wings jerked. Her body twisted. The chain dragged her down with impossible strength for a single hunter.
She crashed onto a wide street bridge hard enough to crack the roadbed beneath her. The impact sent cars skidding and people fleeing in every direction.
She thrashed once.
The chain held.
Her neck strained against the burning links. Her legs could not fully rise. For the first time since leaving the secret dimension, the white dragon could not move freely.
Her breath came out rough and forced, fire sputtering uselessly against the restraint.
Daemon saw her hit the bridge and stopped thinking about anything else.
"Void Reaper!"
The black blade formed in his hand as Thunderstep carried him onto the same street. He did not shout a warning. He swung straight at Jace.
Jace’s eyes sharpened.
The chain shifted. One burning length blocked the first slash with a clash of sparks. The second strike forced him back three steps across the cracked road.
"You’re protecting that thing?" Jace said coldly. "It’s tearing through the city."
"She’s not a thing," Daemon answered, and attacked again.
Their fight exploded across the bridge.
Daemon’s Void Reaper cut in hard black arcs, Inferno flashing along the edge when he forced openings. Jace answered with the chain like a living weapon, one end still locked on Kassia while the other whipped, coiled, and struck with burning speed.
Every exchange cracked concrete under their feet. Fire met black flame. Sparks rained into the street below.
Daemon’s real goal was never a clean kill.
He needed Jace’s attention.
The moment the chain-user focused fully on him, the burning links around Kassia’s neck loosened by a fraction.
She dragged in a heavier breath. One leg pushed against the bridge. Not free yet but no longer fully crushed.
Daemon pressed harder.
Thunderstep flashed him to Jace’s blind side. Void Reaper forced the chain wide. Inferno burst point-blank and pushed the S-Rank back again.
Jace slid across broken asphalt, coat burning at the edge, eyes finally serious.
"You’re strong for someone outside the public rankings," Jace said. "But this ends here."
"No," Daemon said. "It ends when she is safe."
Before the next clash could fully open, crimson light slammed down between them.
Victoria landed hard, blood wings spread, spear already formed.
"Enough!"
Sana appeared from a street shadow a second later, bow raised. Julian, Cole, and Elira came in right behind her, spreading out across the bridge in practiced formation.
Cole’s stone barrier rose between the two fighters. Elira’s eyes were already reading angles and exits. Julian looked like he wanted to be anywhere else and still stood his ground.
Jace’s chain slowed.
"WHA," he muttered.
Victoria’s voice cut across the bridge like a command.
"Stand down, Harlow. If you keep forcing her, this district dies with her."
Then she turned to Daemon, urgency sharp in every word.
"We can hold him for now. We cannot hold the whole city. Every department is coming.
Apex. WHA. Independents. If you don’t reach her right now, someone will kill her before we can stop them."
Daemon looked at Kassia.
The white dragon was still bound, still breathing hard, still half-caught between rage and confusion. Her eyes burned red. The city burned behind her in broken lines of smoke and firelight.
He lowered Void Reaper.
Then he raised both hands.
Inferno answered not as a blast, not as a weapon.
As light.
The first shape failed. Flame twisted into a rough outline and broke apart in the wind from her wings. The second held longer: two blurry figures near a guild office doorway, unfinished and unstable.
Jace frowned. "What is he doing?"
Daemon did not answer.
He poured more control into the fire.
Above the bridge, the flames finally locked into place like fireworks frozen across the evening sky. A young Daemon at a guild office.
Kassia turning toward him for the first time. Then another burst two people holding hands. Then another arms around each other, close, warm, real.
Not perfect paintings.
Memories forced into fire.
Kassia’s thrashing slowed.
The burning chain still held her body, but her head lifted toward the light in the sky. The red in her eyes flickered. For a moment the dragon stopped destroying and simply looked.
One image held longer than the rest.
Daemon and Kassia holding each other.
A sound left her throat. Not a full roar.
Almost a word.
"...Daemon."
The name was rough, dragged out of a throat still shaped for a dragon.
But he heard it.
Slowly, the massive white head turned toward him.
Their eyes met across the broken bridge.
And for the first time since the cage shattered, Kassia stopped.
