The More I Invest in My Wives, the Stronger I Become
Chapter 82: Through Fire and Water
The fireworks did not stop.
Daemon forced more of his Inferno into the sky above the broken bridge, shaping memory after memory until the evening air looked like a festival frozen mid-burst.
Three years of life opened in gold and white fire.
The first time he saw her at the guild office.
The cheap flowers in their small apartment.
Rain against the window and takeout containers on the floor.
Her hands healing the injuries he tried to hide.
The anniversary table he had set with care.
The door closing when she left.
Each image burned brighter than the last. Not perfect. Not clean. But real enough that the white dragon stopped fighting the chain and simply watched.
Kassia’s massive body rested on the edge of the ruined bridge, concrete cracking under her weight. One more wrong movement and the whole span would fall into the water below. Still, her red eyes stayed locked on the fire in the sky.
Then her head turned toward him.
The voice did not come from her throat.
It entered his mind, rough and uncertain, like someone speaking through deep water.
Daemon... is that us?
Daemon’s breath caught.
The connection was real.
He answered the only way he could, pushing the words back along the same invisible line.
Yes. That’s us.
A pause. Heavy. Shaking.
Is this you? Are you the one speaking to me?
It’s me, Kassia. This is Daemon.
Her dragon eyes flickered.
Daemon...
You have to return to human form, he told her, steady even while his chest burned. This is enough. I found you. Come back.
For a moment she only stared at him across the broken bridge, chain still loose around her neck and legs, city smoke rising behind her wings.
I hurt you.
I know.
I left.
I know that too.
I didn’t want to.
Daemon stepped closer, ignoring the hunters still watching from every side.
Then come back. We’ll deal with the rest after. Just come back to me.
The white dragon let out a low sound that was almost a sob.
White mist burst outward from her body.
It swallowed the bridge in a thick, glowing cloud. No one could see inside it. Not Victoria. Not Sana. Not Jace Harlow with his burning chain still half-raised.
The mist rolled over the cracked road and poured toward the edge of the district where the land dropped toward the ocean.
When the cloud moved, the dragon was gone.
A woman’s body fell through the fading white.
Kassia dropped toward the dark water beyond the broken bridge line.
Daemon did not wait.
He ran and jumped.
The ocean hit him like cold stone. Salt water closed over his head. For a second he saw only bubbles and black current.
Then he found her unconscious, drifting downward, hair floating around her face like dark ink.
He caught her with both arms and pulled her against his chest.
Under the surface, the city noise disappeared. There was only water, her weight in his arms, and the weak pulse under his hand.
He kicked upward, breaking the surface with a hard gasp.
"Kassia." His voice was rough. "Kassia, it’s Daemon."
Her eyes opened slowly.
Confusion first.
Then recognition, fragile and disbelieving.
"...Daemon?"
"Yes." He held her tighter in the cold waves. "It’s me. You’re safe."
Tears mixed with seawater on her face.
"I saw the fire," she whispered. "I saw us."
"I know."
"I thought I lost everything."
"You didn’t." He pressed his forehead to hers for a second, breathing hard. "I’m here."
She looked at him like she was afraid he would disappear if she blinked.
Daemon kissed her.
Not carefully. Not gently enough to pretend the last eight months had not happened. Just real salt, cold, and the desperate relief of finally holding the person he had been searching for.
When he pulled back, her fingers were locked in his shirt as if letting go was still impossible.
"I’ve got you," he said. "I’m taking you up."
He activated the old mobility skill from his earlier progression Wingless Flight. Limited. Short. Just enough.
Pale force gathered under his feet and lifted both of them out of the water in a rough, unsteady rise. They cleared the waves, drifted over the damaged shoreline, and dropped onto solid ground beyond the worst of the collapse.
Daemon’s arms stayed around her the whole way, covering her as best he could against the cold wind and staring eyes.
Victoria and Sana reached them almost immediately.
Victoria’s face was tight with leftover battle focus, but her eyes softened when she saw Kassia conscious.
"Ambulance is here," Sana said. "Move."
The vehicle was already waiting at the cleared edge of the street. Daemon carried Kassia to it and laid her onto the stretcher himself. Basic healers moved in at once, checking pulse, breathing, external injuries.
Victoria nodded once at him.
"Go with her. Sana and I will handle the rest."
Daemon climbed into the ambulance without another word.
As the doors closed, the city was still full of damage and noise but not death.
Across the district, Roxanna and Lucien worked through the wreckage. Roxanna’s Lifeweaver power spread farther than most S-Rank healers could manage, knitting broken limbs, sealing burns, dragging people back from the edge of collapse.
Drones and street cameras caught her again and again as she moved from victim to victim without pause. Hunters who had never heard her name stopped to stare.
No one had seen healing on that scale in the open streets before.
Victoria, Sana, Elira, Cole, Julian, and even Jace Harlow pulled survivors from crushed cars and half-fallen buildings. WHA teams secured the perimeter. Apex units locked down the damaged towers.
By the time the worst of the dust settled, one fact stood clear across every emergency channel
No civilians had died.
Injured, yes.
Terrified, yes.
But the hunters had reached them in time and Roxanna’s bloodline had done the rest.
Inside the moving ambulance, Daemon sat beside Kassia and held her hand.
She was weak, but awake. The healers confirmed external stability. Whatever damage the transformation and the chain had left would need deeper care, but she was alive.
Then the System opened across Daemon’s vision without warning.
Ding!
[Host, congratulations.]
[Kassia is pregnant.]
[Confirmed: your child.]
[Current progression: 8 months.]
[Dragonoid gestation period: 24 months.]
Daemon stared at the notification.
Then he looked down at Kassia’s face, at the faint rise of her breathing, at the hand still holding his like she was afraid of losing him again.
Eight months.
A child.
A future neither of them had been allowed to protect.
His fingers tightened carefully around hers as the ambulance cut through the ruined evening streets and the weight of what he had just learned settled over him harder than any battle.
