The More I Invest in My Wives, the Stronger I Become

Chapter 80: Fire That Cannot Reach Her

  • Next Chapter

Daemon stood in front of the ruptured cage with his sword lowered and his pulse hammering against his throat.

Kassia filled the broken platform in full dragon form, white scales catching every flare of emergency light. The cage around her was only half-open now, bars peeled outward like broken ribs, and still she looked too large for the space that had held her.

Heat rolled off her body in waves thick enough to sting the eyes. Her blood-red eyes locked forward, but they did not focus on him the way a person’s eyes would. There was power there. Pain there. Almost no recognition.

Behind him, the dimension erupted into battle.

Victoria’s crimson energy cut through Leonard’s subordinates in sharp, violent arcs, blood spears punching through armor and forcing ranks apart.

Sana’s Elorian bow sang from elevated wreckage, wind arrows pinning hunters before they could regroup.

Roxanna and Lucien moved the opposite way entirely, pulling survivors out of side restraints and collapsed cells people caged like Kassia had been, coughing, shaking, barely able to stand as alarms continued to wail through the broken wing.

Some Apex hunters did not stay to fight at all.

They ran for the exits the moment the cage broke, already certain this would not end in anyone’s favor. Whatever loyalty they had to Leonard ended where a white dragon’s shadow began.

Daemon kept his eyes on her.

"Kassia."

No answer.

"Kassia, it’s me."

Her head tilted a fraction. For half a second, something almost human flickered behind the red glow a hesitation so thin he nearly mistook it for hope.

Then fire exploded from her jaws.

---

Daemon vanished under Thunderstep an instant before the breath hit.

The platform where he had stood became a river of flame. Metal screamed. Corruption seals blackened and peeled.

He reappeared on a tilted walkway to her left, heat blistering past his shoulder, coat edges smoking, and still he did not counterattack.

"Kassia! Look at me!"

She did not.

The white dragon turned and smashed through a support pillar with one claw. The entire wing shuddered.

Another breath of fire ripped across the upper labs and turned them into falling slag. She was not dueling.

She was erasing the place that had imprisoned her, one structure at a time, as if destruction itself was the only language left in her body.

Daemon shot forward again, lightning cracking under his feet in final-form bursts. He closed distance along her flank, then under her neck, then across a collapsing rail, trying to force her attention with presence alone.

Void Reaper stayed raised but not fully committed. Every step was a gamble between reaching her and provoking her.

Victoria’s voice cut through the chaos while she drove two hunters back with a spear of blood.

"Daemon! Stop her! If she tears this dimension open and reaches the city, we won’t be able to contain her!"

He knew she was right.

If Kassia escaped into Ashford like this, every guild and hunter corps would treat her as a calamity-class target.

There would be no conversation after that. Only kill orders, media panic, and a sky full of ranked techniques aimed at her heart.

Daemon clenched his jaw and launched an Inferno Blast straight at her face.

Final-stage fire compressed into a brutal punch of heat and force, slamming against the dragon’s snout in a blooming detonation that lit the whole platform gold.

When the light cleared, her scales were unmarked.

Not scratched.

Not scorched.

Untouched.

Daemon’s eyes widened.

Her skin no, her scales were too strong. Ordinary ranked attacks meant nothing here. Even his completed Inferno Blast had failed to leave a line.

The same fire that could shatter dungeon bosses had become little more than bright noise against her body.

Fine.

He pulled deeper.

Flame gathered around both hands, then expanded above him into a massive fireball dense enough to warp the air and crack the walkway under his boots.

He hurled it with everything he could spare, not wanting to hurt her, forced to stop her all the same. The sphere crashed into her chest and engulfed her entire upper body in roaring gold-red fire.

For a moment the dragon disappeared inside the inferno.

Then she stepped out of it.

The flames clung to her white scales like useless clothing and slid away. She still stood. Still burned with her own power.

And worst of all she was not even fighting him. His strongest fire had become irrelevant to her.

Her mind had only one command left.

Destroy this place.

And she did.

---

The dimension began to break in earnest.

Walkways snapped. Outer seals ruptured. Artificial dusk fractured into unstable rifts of light.

Roxanna shouted from the lower path as she and Lucien pushed the last group of survivors toward an exit route through buckling corridors.

"We’re clear on this side!"

That left Daemon, Victoria, Sana and Kassia.

The white dragon inhaled so deeply the air itself seemed to lean toward her throat. Heat built with terrifying patience.

Then she released her largest flame yet, not at Daemon, but at the dimension gate entrance. The blast hit the structural core of the pocket space like a divine hammer.

Cracks raced across reality.

The whole dimension screamed.

Victoria reacted instantly.

"Crimson cover!"

Blood-red energy expanded into a protective dome around the three of them as the world outside it detonated into heat and collapsing geometry.

Debris hammered the barrier. Fire washed over it in continuous waves. Inside the dome, Sana’s teeth clenched and Daemon’s hands curled into fists so tight his knuckles ached.

When the worst shock passed, the entrance was gone in any controlled sense.

And Kassia was already moving through the rupture.

Toward the city.

Sana’s face went pale.

"Daemon, we have to stop her before other guilds and hunters come to kill her!"

Victoria’s barrier lowered enough for them to see the open path of destruction leading outward, smoke trailing into night air that no longer belonged to Apex alone.

"You have to do something," Sana pressed. "Or we lose her."

Daemon stood in the broken aftershock with fire still fading from his hands and the taste of failure bitter in his mouth.

He had dodged her breath, matched flame against flame, thrown everything his Inferno could become and none of it had reached her.

She was stronger than his fire.

Wilder than his voice.

Further from him than the years he had spent looking.

His chest tightened with a cold, helpless question that cut deeper than any wound.

*How do I stop someone I cannot bear to hurt?*

Outside the dying dimension, the white dragon’s roar rolled toward Ashford like the opening note of a disaster.

And Daemon still did not know whether the next move he made would save Kassia...

or become the first wound that made her truly unreachable.
