The Mafia Lord Forgotten Bride
Chapter 61: Introducing the Spy
"I know you know I am here because of you and not Amie."
June looked away from him.
Everything but his face looked interesting. And her stupid heart chose that moment to spike as it beat fast.
"Why?" Her voice was barely a whisper.
"You know why, Mami."
Rauf took a bold step forward. The fact that she wasn’t pushing him away was encouraging.
"You’re my wife, Mami."
That statement reignited the anger burning in her heart.
Hadn’t he denied her himself?
She took a bold step and looked directly into his eyes.
There was a hint of something like sadness in his eyes. But June couldn’t think of a single thing that could make a person like Rauf sad. His cheeks looked a bit hollow, as if he had been dieting.
But overall, he still looked good.
"I’m not your wife," she said with a tone of finality before shutting the door in his face.
June dragged her feet to her bed. She could feel tears at the corners of her eyes.
She was hurting.
But it seemed he was also hurting.
She remained there without sleeping as the seconds turned into minutes, and minutes into hours.
Her stomach rumbled, indicating that she needed to put something in her stomach.
Hopefully, Rauf would have finally left the mansion.
She stood up from the bed, still in the same clothes she had worn to the clinic.
Just as she opened the door, a maid was about to knock on it.
The maid withdrew her hand.
"I was just about to ask you to dinner, ma."
At the mention of dinner, she could already tell there would be different kinds of food on their table.
The only thing she wasn’t always looking forward to was the look on Amie’s face. But the number of delicious foods on the table seemed to make it worth it.
June dragged herself to the dining room.
The sound of voices echoed from the dining room straight to the hallway.
And when June got to the dining table, instead of three silhouettes, she was seeing four.
At that moment, she already knew he was still there.
Tempted to turn back just to ignore him, her stomach rumbled again as if warning her not to try it.
So, instead, she joined them at the table.
Serena’s hand was on her spoon, but she hadn’t started eating.
Chris and Rauf were seated on either side of Serena, while Amie sat next to Rauf.
June almost rolled her eyes.
So much for not coming because of her.
She went to the opposite side and sat beside Chris.
Immediately she sat down, Serena cleared her throat.
"It seems we are all finally complete."
She clasped her fingers together.
"June, I don’t think I have introduced you yet to Rauf. He’s a distant friend, and it was thanks to him that I was able to find my baby."
Her hand moved forward as though she was searching for Amie’s fingers, but the other kept trying to lace her fingers with Rauf’s, who seemed to keep pushing her hand away.
June let her eyes wander all over the table, taking in the different dishes. The delicious aroma filled her nose with a kind of hunger she hadn’t known, but she waited.
On instinct, her eyes moved back to Rauf.
The top of his shirt showed, and she swallowed as recognition hit her.
She knew the shirt because she had bought it herself.
Why was he wearing it?
Her cheeks flushed red.
In a fit of anger, she hadn’t noticed it before, but now she couldn’t help stealing small peeks at it.
"Are you okay?" Chris whispered in her ear.
June nodded, not trusting herself to whisper back the same way Chris had.
"I also have something else to tell you all."
Serena’s lips stretched into a thin line.
For some reason, she seemed to be in a great mood.
"I’m scheduling my eye surgery soon. I’ll finally be able to see you all."
The room erupted in a fit of applause, and almost everyone except Amie wished her congratulations.
"I assure you this is going to be one of the best decisions you make," Rauf said. "I’m glad I did mine. I was able to see the person I love most in the world."
As he said those words, his eyes were fastened on June.
June shifted in her seat, trying to act like she couldn’t see his eyes on her.
"Congratulations, mot..."
She corrected herself immediately.
"Congratulations, ma’am. If there’s anything I can help you with, let me know. I’m willing to."
"Congratulations, Mother. I’m so happy for you," Chris added.
Amie’s spoon fell from her hand.
She hadn’t expected it.
She struggled to pick it up while saying, "Congra... Congratulations."
If Serena could suddenly see, there was no way she wouldn’t guess she wasn’t her daughter.
"Are you okay?" Serena asked.
Amie forced a nod.
"I’m fine, Mother. I’m just hungry."
At that, Serena chuckled.
"I’m sorry. Let’s dig in."
Finally, June sighed.
But she couldn’t just shove the food into her mouth the way she usually did.
Even if she wanted to ignore it, it was hard to ignore that Rauf was directly opposite her.
So, she gently placed the food in her mouth.
Chris watched.
He knew the way she usually ate, so it was surprising.
But since Rauf told him about June’s pregnancy, he had no idea what to do. If there was one thing he knew about pregnant women, it was that they usually had mood swings.
And spoiling June’s mood here was not exactly his cup of tea.
"Are you okay with the food?" Amie suddenly asked Rauf.
She tried to dish more food for him, but he ignored it.
Even though Serena couldn’t see them, she could hear the conversation and sighed.
"Young love."
Then she spoke out.
"Rauf, when I heard you’re the one married to my daughter, I felt at ease. I know you’re such a good person, and you can genuinely make my daughter happy."
Rauf nodded.
"Of course, ma’am. I’ll try to make her as happy as I can. Even if it’s the last thing I do."
Amie beamed beside him.
"I knew you could never forsake me."
But Rauf wasn’t talking about her. He was saying it to the real daughter.
June had no idea he knew and balled her fist in anger.
Did he have to throw his perfect love all over her here?
While she was still forcing herself to eat and ignore them, Amie copied what Serena had done earlier and cleared her throat.
Others barely spared her a glance like they did Serena.
But Amie didn’t care. She continued.
"Well, I also have something to say and someone to introduce to you all."
Chris felt his heart sinking.
Did she already find the person?
"Okay."
It was only Serena who encouraged her.
"I remember telling the family that I needed a guard, and I was willing to get one myself. Well, I finally found someone, and he will be here soon."
Immediately, the door opened, and a broad-chested man came in.
He was walking, but his feet barely sounded on the floor.
Just like Chris, he had also mastered how to walk without making a sound.
He stood in front of them and bowed slightly. His eyes danced around the room.
He knew Amie well. Before coming over, her father had shown him lots of Amie’s pictures.
So, that made the other woman June.
"This is Gerald," Amie began. "He’s the guard I spoke about. Gerald is gentle and nice. I guarantee that Gerald won’t cause any trouble."
Gerald nodded again.
"It’s a pleasure to meet you all. I’m Gerald, and I can do a lot of things. So, if you need anything, you should all let me know."
Chris’s gaze travelled from his head to his toes.
His face looked blank, or he was just that good at hiding his emotions.
He looked alright, and nothing about him felt suspicious in any way. ℯ
Chris almost sighed in relief. He had thought that Amie was up to no good, but seeing the guard brought a certain level of relief to him.
"Congratulations."
Then, with a false sense of excitement, he turned to Gerald.
"No need for too many formalities. I will introduce you to the rest soon."
Gerald nodded, saying his thanks.
Soon, he left their presence, stealing one last glance at June.
A feeling of unease passed through June, and with the fact that she was tired already, her appetite seemed to have completely vanished.
She pushed her plate forward.
"I’m sorry, but I’m okay. I want to rest now."
Rauf and Chris pushed their plates too.
"I’ll take you there."
"Let me assist you."
They said it at the same time.
Amie tried pulling Rauf to remain in his seat, but Rauf ignored her.
June wanted to tell them there was no need.
But her vision was dancing in front of her.
She left the table alone, and before she knew it, she slipped.
And everywhere went dark.
