The Mafia Lord Forgotten Bride
Chapter 62: Collapsed
Before June could hit the floor, Chris was already beside her, his hand spread across her back. Even Rauf, who was at the opposite side, had gotten very close to her, his hand almost gripping her.
Chris caught her, watching her eyes close, while he screamed, "Someone should call the ambulance."
Serena, who hadn’t seen what happened, scraped her chair backward at the noise. "What’s happening?" Her voice was filled with panic. "Who is it?"
Amie couldn’t help but stand up too, her eyes bitterly fixed on Rauf.
How could he get to the other side of the table within seconds?
Did he truly care about June?
Rauf dialled the emergency number while Chris tried to perform first aid.
He placed his head over her chest and sighed when he realized she was breathing.
While waiting for the doctor, Chris carried her towards her bedroom with Rauf right beside him.
He wanted to take her from Chris and carry her himself, but Chris didn’t wait to give her to him.
The only thought in his head was getting her to her room and laying her properly on the bed.
The security guards had been informed to let the ambulance in as soon as they arrived.
Rauf had taken his seat beside her and had been holding her hand from the moment Chris had dropped her on the bed, while Chris walked around the room on a call.
"Come on. Does it take an ambulance this long to get to a place?"
Soon, there was a slight knock on the door.
Chris went to open it immediately. There was a doctor standing opposite him.
"Come in," Chris said without greeting the man. "We were just having dinner when she suddenly slumped. And she wasn’t eating as much as she usually did."
The doctor listened to him while checking June. He had to ask Rauf to let go of her hand twice so that he could attend to her properly.
Serena had gone back to her room, and no one knew where Amie had gone. The dinner had turned into a disaster.
Once the doctor was done checking her, he sighed.
Both men stared at him, waiting for what he had to say.
"She’s fine," he started. "She just needs to rest better and eat more. And don’t let her think about or do anything stressful."
They nodded. Those instructions should be doable.
But suddenly, the doctor asked, "Who’s her husband?"
"I am." Rauf pushed himself forward. "Is there any problem?"
The doctor looked towards Chris as if he didn’t want to say what he had to say in his presence.
"It’s fine. He’s part of the family. You can say whatever you want to say in his presence."
"Fine. You need to take proper care of her. She’s pregnant, but the pregnancy is at risk if she doesn’t rest properly."
When the doctor left after writing down the drugs they could get for her, Rauf sat back on his chair beside her and stared into her face.
Occasionally, his gaze moved to her stomach.
This was all his fault.
If he hadn’t thrown her out of the mansion, she wouldn’t have had to deal with everything on her own.
The urge to hit something hard filled him, but all he did was remain beside her, holding onto her hand tightly.
"I need you to be fine. I promise to get you whatever you want if you are fine," he said, his voice cracking.
He had never felt this helpless in his life, not even when he was blind.
Chris hated the whole situation.
"I’ll go out to get the drugs."
Rauf nodded.
And he was gone, leaving them both alone.
Just as soon as he left, someone came knocking on the door again.
Rauf stood up.
Had Chris forgotten something?
But when he opened the door, it was Serena on the other side.
"Ma’am..." He opened the door wider for her while helping her to get inside.
"How’s she?" Serena asked.
"The doctor said she only needed to rest."
He didn’t mention anything about her pregnancy.
Just from the few minutes he had spent with Serena during dinner, he could tell how close she was to Amie. And anything getting to Amie might as well have gotten to Samir.
But he felt a bit guilty for being the one who had brought Amie to her house as her daughter.
Serena’s hand moved frantically as if in search of June’s.
Rauf helped her.
She rubbed her hand slowly over June’s, then turned to Rauf.
"If she needs anything, let me know."
He nodded again, and she was gone.
Rauf wasn’t surprised to see how Serena could be nice to June even without knowing she was her real daughter yet.
After all, she had helped him in his darkest time too.
He sat back, watching June with absolute concentration.
Slowly, her eyes fluttered open, moving around as if trying to figure out where she was.
He stood up, holding her hand again.
"June."
At the sound of Rauf’s voice, she turned towards him. Her face, which was void of expression, turned into a frown.
"What are you doing here?" she asked.
Rauf ignored the question.
"How are you feeling?"
No answer.
Rauf continued, "You collapsed during dinner, but thankfully, the doctor came to check on you and said you need to rest."
June felt light-headed. Even without meaning to, her hand moved towards her stomach, but she didn’t ask the question at the tip of her tongue.
Rauf followed the movement of her hand.
The doctor had said she should avoid anything that would make her think, so to assure her, he said, "You don’t have to worry. The baby is fine."
Instead of the relief he was expecting, she sat up straight.
Her eyes widened in surprise.
"You know."
Rauf nodded.
"How?"
He could hear the wheels in her head turning. It was obvious she didn’t want him to know about the baby.
And Rauf didn’t want to bother with useless details.
"I think you should sleep back."
June shook her head.
"I want to know how you knew about my baby." She stressed the words "my baby."
Rauf was about to say something when they heard a knock on the door.
Letting out a breath of relief, he stood up to open the door.
Chris came in with a small bag in his hand. His eyes widened when he saw June awake, and he hastened his step.
"You’re awake."
June nodded, her eyes settling on the bag of drugs and her mind wondering if Chris also knew about the baby.
He wanted to be the one to tell her.
He wanted to build the trust between them with that detail.
"I got the drugs you’ll be needing."
She gave him a small smile.
"Are you okay?"
"I’m fine."
Chris nodded, placing the bag on the small table beside the bed.
"That’s good." He looked at her for a moment before glancing at Rauf. "You scared everyone."
June’s eyes moved between the two men.
There was something different about the way they were looking at her.
Especially Rauf.
She swallowed.
"Did the doctor say anything else?"
Chris shook his head.
"No. He only said you need enough rest and proper meals."
June’s fingers tightened around the bedsheet.
"And that’s all?"
"Yes."
She looked at Rauf.
He remained silent.
June’s heart began beating faster.
If Rauf knew about the baby, then there was a possibility that Chris knew too.
She turned to Chris.
"Did he..." She stopped.
Chris raised an eyebrow.
"Did he what?"
June looked away.
"Nothing."
Chris stared at her for a few seconds before smiling gently.
"You should rest. We can talk when you’re feeling better."
June nodded, but her eyes remained on him.
There was something he wasn’t telling her.
And she needed to know what it was.
Rauf watched the exchange silently. He knew exactly what was going through June’s mind.
Chris had wanted to tell her himself.
But now that Rauf had already told her he knew about the baby, everything had changed.
Chris picked up the bag.
"I’ll leave the drugs here. You need to take them as the doctor instructed."
June nodded again.
As he turned to leave, she suddenly called his name.
"Chris."
He stopped and turned.
"Yes?"
June hesitated.
"Do you know something about me that I don’t know?"
For a moment, Chris went completely still.
Rauf’s eyes immediately moved to him.
Chris looked at June, then at Rauf.
And he knew there was no way around the question anymore.
"There’s something we need to talk about," he said quietly.
June’s heart skipped.
"What?"
Chris opened his mouth, but before he could answer, Rauf spoke.
"Not now."
June’s eyes snapped towards him.
Rauf met her gaze.
"The doctor said you need to rest."
June frowned.
She hated how both men seemed to know something she didn’t.
"Then someone better tell me before I get better."
With that, she turned away from both of them and pulled the blanket over herself.
Chris exchanged a look with Rauf.
Neither man said a word.
But both knew the same thing.
June was going to find out soon.
