The Mafia Lord Forgotten Bride
Chapter 60: I came for you.
"Find a way to stop her from working with that man."
Chris stared.
Silence, punctuated by their breathing, filled the room.
Rauf didn’t say a word either. He watched Chris.
After a while, Chris sighed.
"You must be crazy to think I can tell June what to do and what not to do. I just told you how independent she is."
He pinched his nose again.
"And the last thing I want to do is annoy her to the point that she might declare she’s going back to her friend’s place."
Rauf sighed.
"So, we leave her to continue working."
Chris nodded.
"That’s the only sensible thing to do. If we want to help her, we can ask her boss to reduce her workload."
Then, as if Rauf had just told him the news, he added, "I am going to become an uncle, and Mother will be a grandmother. She will be so excited."
"I know. Do you know how shocked I was when I discovered I was going to be a father?" Rauf announced, his voice rising with pride. "I was so surprised, my brain went on a break."
Chris could imagine it.
He laughed.
Now, this was the sort of news he wanted to be hearing about.
But then suddenly, he stopped.
"That changes the whole game. If June is pregnant, I have to do something about Amie before she finds out, or before June starts sporting a bump."
That, Rauf agreed with.
They spoke at length about other things.
Chris had to cancel his appointment and asked his assistant to handle some of the work he was supposed to do that day.
After a while, he asked, "Won’t you be going home? Or you can go and check on her at her workplace."
Rauf sighed, slumping in the chair.
He then narrated June’s reaction to him when he went to seek her out.
Instead of the pity he was expecting from Chris, the guy held his stomach and shook with laughter. The more Rauf glared at him, the louder his laughter seemed to get.
"You mean you’re being ignored by your wife right now?" Chris asked again.
Rauf ignored him.
"That’s my sister," Chris concluded after his laughter had gone down a bit. "That’s how she should react. You deserve to be punished for treating her like dirt."
Rauf sank lower into his chair.
"I know. But what am I supposed to do now?"
A look of seriousness replaced the amusement on Chris’s face.
"Honestly, I have no idea."
Rauf almost hit him.
"Then you shouldn’t have laughed at me. Wait until you get married, then you will realize what sort of puzzle women are."
"I can’t imagine that moment," Chris said. "There’s a reason I am the most eligible bachelor in the state. And I don’t think I am ready to change that status."
After talking about random things again, Rauf got tired.
"Can you take me to June’s room? I’ll wait for her there."
Chris shook his head.
"Sorry, I can’t. But you can wait for her in mine."
Before Rauf could think more about it, Chris had already stood up and was heading to the door.
He helped Rauf out as they moved towards his room. But he showed Rauf where June’s room was, before heading to his.
"We can’t enter without her permission. So, you will need to calm down."
Rauf thanked him as he settled on the bed.
"I’ll be at my office. I have some deals to close."
And he was gone.
Meanwhile, Amie paced in her room. Though her room’s air conditioner was on, sweat rolled down her face.
Since Rauf disappeared into Chris’s office, he hadn’t gotten out, and he hadn’t even bothered to check on her.
It couldn’t be that she wasn’t the reason he came.
Apart from her, Amie was certain the rest of the people living in the mansion barely knew Rauf.
Annoyed, she picked up her phone and called her father.
As if he had been expecting her call, Samir picked up on the first ring.
"Darling, is everything alright?"
Amie shook her head.
"I don’t know, Dad." Her voice shook slightly. "Just now, Rauf came to the mansion, and he has not even spared me a glance."
"What do you mean by that?" Samir screamed into the phone.
Amie had to remove the phone temporarily from her ear. Once she was sure he was done shouting, she told him how Rauf had acted.
Samir let out a string of curses.
Then, "Is June home?"
"No."
"See, Amie. Maybe it’s not what we’re thinking. He must have had an appointment with Chris."
But Amie’s mind was still on the topic. She needed some sort of assurance.
"Father, when did you say the guard will be here?"
Her father was silent for a while before responding.
"Today. You should let him in or inform the guards someone will be coming for you."
"Of course."
The news brought a smile to her face.
After she hung up the call, she was still smiling.
Her thoughts were on the different ways the spy would handle her.
Through the rest of the day, the knowledge that Rauf was in the mansion without checking on her dampened the good news she had received from her father.
Amie jumped onto the bed, letting sleep take over.
The day was hectic for June Trevor. She didn’t remember when she had felt this tired.
There was a slight accident involving some animals, so their clinic was filled with injured animals. She barely got a chance to rest at work.
Now, Nate was driving her back to the mansion, and June kept closing and opening her eyes in an attempt not to sleep before getting to the mansion.
It was late afternoon, but she was still earlier than when she had gone out with Chris.
She should be able to catch up on some sleep before dinner was ready.
When the car rolled into the mansion, June almost yelled happily.
The only thought in her head was her shower and then her bed. She didn’t think she could eat with how tired she was.
What June wasn’t expecting when she got into the living room was Rauf.
Her leg froze as her eyes widened.
What was he doing here?
How did he know the Vassaris, and how did he get access to the mansion?
Rauf saw her, and a smile graced his lips. As always, she was wearing a pair of jeans and a simple top.
June frowned. Apart from Rauf’s presence being surprising, the way he was dressed was also different.
But what got her attention most was the shirt he was wearing.
It was one of the casual shirts she had insisted he always wear during the time he was blind.
June attacked him first.
"Are you spying on me?"
Rauf frowned.
"Spy? No..."
Why did she always think negatively when it came to him?
"Then what are you doing here?"
As if she couldn’t have had worse timing, Amie came into the living room.
"What do you mean, what is he doing here? Hubby came for me."
Rauf groaned.
June looked between them both. A flash of hurt crossed her face, and she stormed out of the living room, almost hitting Rauf on the shoulder.
June chuckled.
She must have been crazy to think Rauf came for her.
Of course, it was Amie.
The little stunts he had pulled at Elise’s house had gotten her thinking he was a different man.
But now that she thought about it, Amie had always been the love of his life.
She got into the room and banged her door so loudly it almost shook the house.
June threw her bag on the floor.
What was she expecting?
That he would suddenly fall for her and leave Amie, the woman he had loved for years and thought was by his side, for her.
Yes.
She was delusional.
Before June could settle on the bed, there was a loud banging sound on her door.
Was it Amie coming to warn her to stay away from her husband?
The door banged again.
June frowned.
This wasn’t Amie’s way of banging on her door. Normally, Amie would knock on it as if she wanted to tear the door down.
But this knock... it was urgent.
June frowned. It couldn’t be...
She moved to the door and opened it, only to come face-to-face with Rauf.
"Wrong room," June said in a bored tone.
Then she almost closed the door in his face again.
Rauf hadn’t bothered to look at where she was talking about.
"No. This is the right room. This is exactly where I was coming to."
June’s breath hitched.
She knew she shouldn’t be giving him any sort of attention.
But the curiosity in her wouldn’t just let him go. She wanted to know exactly what he meant by this was exactly where he was coming.
"Amie is not here. If you want, I can tell you her room."
Rauf frowned.
"I don’t care for Amie’s room. I know you know."
He sighed.
"I know you know I am here because of you and not Amie."
