The Mafia Lord Forgotten Bride

Chapter 59: A visit went wrong.

The security guards knew Rauf. They didn’t ask him for an access card before opening the gate and allowing him access to the estate.

His gaze fell to the packaged bag beside him, and a smile curled on his lips. He had bought mashed potatoes with roasted chicken, as well as chocolates and fresh yoghurt. He had read somewhere that pregnant women loved sweets.

His eyes fell on his shirt, and his smile widened. He had exchanged his suit trousers for casual jeans, something that matched the way he had seen June dressed recently.

He picked up the food effortlessly and went through the door he had followed Chris through countless times.

The maids made themselves scarce as they glanced at him and then hurried back to doing their chores.

But soon, he heard footsteps coming towards the living room.

Rauf adjusted his shirt while mentally thinking of the best way to present the food to June without ordering her to eat it.

The footsteps sounded closer, and when he looked up, the smile on his face vanished.

Amie stared back at him. She wore a long, body-fitting dress that brought out the curves of her body. Her face was heavily made up.

She was dressed like she was going out, and Rauf momentarily blamed himself for coming earlier before she left.

But before he could say a word, she broke into a jog and threw herself right at him.

"Darling, I knew you were coming for me. You must have missed me so much, right?"

Rauf pulled her away from him. The smell of her perfume made his insides turn all of a sudden.

How had he ever thought this was attractive?

But then again, her perfume had never been this heavy before.

He could tell that since she started living at the Vassari’s mansion, Amie had changed some things about herself.

Right from the diamond chain that sat on her neck to the rings she adorned her hands with, it was as if she bought everything she thought was expensive and adorned herself with it.

"Seriously, darling. I know I should have come to visit you at the hotel, but you wouldn’t believe what’s happening to me right now."

She moved closer again, leaning in as if there was anyone else around to hear her speak.

"That leech followed me here. I couldn’t leave her alone and let her steal my family again."

Rauf felt his blood boil.

He knew exactly who she was referring to as a leech.

And at that moment, his patience was getting thin.

Thankfully, someone else came into the room before he could do or say something drastic.

Chris’s eyes moved from Rauf to Amie, then backwards. He wasn’t expecting Rauf at the mansion, so it came as a bit of a surprise to him.

Again, before anyone could say a word, Amie threw herself on Rauf.

"Brother, Hubby came to say hi to me."

Chris raised his right brow lightly.

"Really?"

And again, Rauf had to push her away from his side. This time, he didn’t care how far he pushed her, as she staggered and almost lost her footing.

But thanks to the chair, she didn’t fall flat on the floor.

Rauf made a show of dusting every part of his body she had touched.

And without preamble, he faced Chris and asked, "Where’s June?"

June, Amie thought.

The wheels in her head were turning.

Why would Rauf be looking for June?

But then again, she remembered she was the one who had just told him about ’the leech.’

He was probably going to help her scold June.

Amie stood straight.

This time, not even Chris could save her.

Chris looked behind him.

"Man, you came at the wrong time. June already left for work."

Rauf stared at Chris as if he had just spat out rubbish.

In his excitement to see her and with his perfect plan to entice her, he had totally forgotten she had to go to work in the morning.

Chris chuckled.

He could tell what was going on in Rauf’s mind. He closed the distance between them and patted his shoulder lightly.

"Don’t think like that. You know you can still go and check on her at her workplace."

"No!" Amie shouted.

The men, who had totally forgotten about her, turned to stare at her.

She gave Rauf one of the sweetest smiles she could muster.

"You don’t need to go to her office just to tell her off, darling. I can handle her just fine."

Chris looked at Rauf, amusement shining in his eyes.

"Darling," he said before continuing on his journey out of the room.

But before he could take four steps, Rauf caught up to him.

"Where do you think you’re going? We have unfinished business."

Confused, Chris said, "We do?"

"Of course, we do."

Amie had no idea what was happening.

Rauf had come to the mansion because of her, so why was he ignoring her?

The men left her presence as if she were invisible, turning back towards the direction of Chris’s office.

As their footsteps echoed down the hallway, Rauf heard Amie’s muffled voice.

"Darling, where are you going? That’s not the way to my room."

Chris seemed to have heard it too and couldn’t hide the smile on his lips. He used his thumb to jerk Rauf’s chest playfully.

"Darling, you’re going to the wrong room."

But Rauf wasn’t in the mood to joke, not when the main reason he had come to the mansion wasn’t even at the mansion.

Chris pressed his thumbprint to his door and opened it.

After realizing who Amie was, he had installed a biometric lock on his door.

Every important document was in his office, and he would be too careless if he let someone like Amie gain access to it anyhow.

Rauf dragged his feet into the room, dropping onto the closest chair while carefully putting the bag of food on the table.

"What’s that?" Chris asked.

He had been curious about the bag since he saw Rauf, but the situation with Amie held his attention more than he cared to admit.

"Nothing," Rauf murmured.

But Chris’s gaze was still on him.

"And what’s with the jeans and shirt? Did you decide to change your style?" Chris asked, finally taking his seat opposite him.

But Rauf just stared at him.

When Chris saw that he wasn’t ready to start whatever conversation he had claimed they had, he decided to ask first.

"So, what’s up?"

Rauf frowned.

"How could you?"

Confused, Chris continued staring at him.

"How could I?"

"I mean, how could you let June continue working at that place? The stress. The distance. And more importantly, the stress."

Chris stared at him without blinking.

"Say something. You should have just let her stay at home and rest. You could have insisted as her brother."

After a few seconds, Chris chuckled.

"I thought you were her husband."

Rauf corrected him.

"I am. I am still her husband, and we’re legally married."

"Then how come you know nothing about your wife?"

Rauf wanted to argue that he knew June the best, but Chris had already continued.

"If you know her as much as you claim, you would have known your wife loves to do what she wants. She’s an independent woman who hardly cares that she’s now the heiress to one of the most powerful mafia families in the state. She just wants to do her own stuff."

Some of the anger Rauf felt left him.

"But still, you should have insisted. You should have insisted that she didn’t need to work."

He sighed.

"I once drove from here to downtown, and I know how stressful the journey is. And then, she still had to work just to make that peanut."

Chris pinched the bridge of his nose.

"June wouldn’t like it if you called her earnings peanuts. She takes great pride in it."

Rauf continued to stare at him.

"So, you’re going to let her continue doing that work?"

Chris shrugged.

"I can’t change her mind."

"Not even with the condition she is in?" Rauf added.

Chris blinked at him.

"What condition?"

As Rauf opened his mouth to talk, Chris stopped him.

"Don’t tell me she’s sick."

For the first time after setting his eyes on Amie, a ghost of a smile appeared on his lips.

"You don’t know."

"Know what?"

Rauf seemed to enjoy the fact that Chris was the one being kept in the dark this time around. Instead of responding, he leaned back in the chair, still smiling.

A frown appeared on Chris’s face.

"What do you mean?"

He was already picking up his phone.

"Or do I have to call June to ask?"

Rauf sat up. He already had enough of teasing Chris.

"Didn’t she tell you she’s pregnant?"

Not a lot of things surprised Chris, but this came as a shock to him.

"Pregnant? How? She didn’t look as if..."

Rauf smiled.

"Yeah. I think it’s because she’s in the early stages. So, she shouldn’t be doing anything stressful at all."

Chris thought about it.

Yeah, June didn’t need anything related to stress at all.

"So, what do you want me to do?"

"Find a way to stop her from working with that man."
