The Legendary Method Actor

Chapter 347: The Arrogance of a Master

Ray stared at the suspended entity. Despite its internal meridians burning with pure, unyielding Primordial Aether, the creature's featureless, matte-black face held a distinct smile. It wasn't the manic grin of a cornered beast; it was the chilling, knowing expression of a predator that had already won.

Ray wondered what could possibly be making the creature smile when it had been so thoroughly dismantled, but the crushing weight of physical and energy exhaustion slammed into him, dulling his analytical edge. He was simply too tired to think about it right now.

"Secure it."

Ray rasped, pulling a coil of sturdy rope from his bag of holding and tossing it toward his Vanguard.

Svane caught the rope with one hand, maintaining his secure grip on the entity with the other. He didn't need to put much effort into it, the dark figure had completely ceased struggling. It hung entirely limp in his grasp, eerily compliant. Svane dragged the creature toward a thick, dead tree at the edge of the crater and began tightly binding its arms and torso to the petrified trunk.

Ray trudged toward a flat boulder a few yards away and slumped down against it. His mind felt bruised, stretched thin by the relentless prolonged use of the Tri-Concurrent Partial Immersion. Seeking immediate relief, he reached into his belt pouch, pulled out a high-calorie ration bar, and forced himself to take a large bite.

Instantly, the Crimson Weaver’s passive ‘Neural Gastronomy’ skill engaged.

As Ray chewed and swallowed, the dense calories were hyper-metabolized by his system, converting physical nourishment directly into cognitive relief. A cool, soothing sensation washed over his strained cortex, steadily alleviating the mental fatigue and restoring his baseline focus.

Within moments, his mind had stabilized. He was not yet in peak mental condition, but the dangerous fog of exhaustion had lifted.

With his cognitive faculties returning, Ray recognized his most pressing vulnerability: his Life-Force capacity. His aether was dangerously low. If another threat emerged, his low Aether reserves would severely limit his tactical options. He needed to recover, and fast.

Ray shifted his posture, crossing his legs into a perfect lotus position. He closed his eyes and initiated the Ashvane Method.

Because of his rigorous, unrelenting practice, Ray had practically mastered the volatile cultivation technique. He had grown so adept that he could perform the method in a moving carriage already.

Here, deep within the Whispering Hills, overflowing with ambient aether, his recovery rate was phenomenal. It was easily about fifty percent as fast as utilizing the Sunstone Heart in the Genesis Crystal Chamber.

However, as the dense Aether flooded his system, Ray was acutely aware of the Ashvane Method's inherent flaw. He could cultivate anywhere, yes, but he still had to remain perfectly stationary and deeply focused. If he were violently disturbed or attacked mid-cycle, the volatile ‘shatter and rebuild’ mechanic could trigger a catastrophic internal backlash.

This isn't enough. If I am locked in a prolonged skirmish, I cannot simply sit down and meditate. I need a recovery method that works on the move. Something I can trigger mid-combat.

Ray thought, guiding the golden energy through his pathways.

As he analyzed his energy limitations, his mind drifted back to the moment he cast the aether-infused 1st-Circle spell: Magnify Gravity.

While Svane had choked on the dense, ambient magic, Ray had cast effortlessly. But looking back at the memory with his current focus, Ray realized something else had happened when he casted the spell.

When he had injected his pure Primordial Aether into the spell matrix, he felt a distinct, magnetic tug from the environment. The dense ambient Aether of the Whispering Hills hadn't resisted him; it had actually been drawn to the spell's formation, eager to merge with his technique.

What if I didn't supply the entire Aether-Infusion with my own primordial aether? What if I used my own aether as a foundation, but actively siphoned the ambient aether to cover the rest of the spell's cost?

Ray’s thought as his analytical mind began to spin.

If he became adept enough at blending them, he could drastically reduce the drain on his life-force, maybe even relying fully on the environment for his infusions. However he also knew it had a glaring limitation, it would likely only work in high-density environments, but it was a massive tactical advantage.

System, analyze the viability of a hybrid Aether-Infusion. Can I supplement my own aether expenditures by drawing ambient aether directly into the spell matrix during the casting sequence?

Ray projected mentally.

A faint blue screen materialized in his mind's eye.

[ANALYZING PROPOSAL...]

[SIMULATING ARCANE MATRIX INTEGRATION...]

[RESULT: HYBRID INFUSION VIABILITY AT 73%]

[WARNING: Ambient Aether purity levels vary wildly from Host's Primordial Aether. Forcing a hybrid integration will introduce high matrix instability. Host will experience a projected up to 30% reduction in overall spell casting stability and up to 50% reduction of spell power and effectiveness. Recommended for emergency conservation only.]

Seventy-three percent. It wasn't perfect, and the drop in casting stability and spell power was a harsh trade-off, but it was entirely possible. It was a tool he could use.

Encouraged by the System's calculations, Ray pivoted to his primary concern.

System. I need to develop a kinetic, mid-combat Aether recovery method. It must be stable, and not have the volatile 'shatter and rebuild' nature of the Ashvane Method, and allow for energy regeneration while moving or engaging targets.

Ray projected his follow up question.

The System's blue text flickered rapidly.

[PROCESSING REQUEST...]

[SEARCHING HOST DATABASE...]

[ERROR: INSUFFICIENT DATA.]

[ANALYSIS: The Host's current knowledge of cultivation methodologies are limited. There is no existing information or historical data that points within the system's current parameters to synthesize a stable, kinetic energy recovery loop. Host must gather more esoteric data or acquire a specific catalyst.]

Ray let out a quiet mental sigh. The System was a flawless calculator, but it could not invent something out of its parameters for nothing. It lacked imagination.

Fortunately, Ray had plenty of that locked away in his own head.

Ray projected his consciousness inward, descending into the ambient presence of his mind to consult his council of personas.

He manifested in the center of the grand theater stage. The personas were scattered about the space, illuminated by the soft glow of the footlights.

The Grizzled Commander was the first to acknowledge his arrival. The commander stepped forward, giving a sharp, approving nod.

Commander: "Excellent execution on the takedown, boy. Textbook suppression. However, do not let your guard down. I feel that something is up. That creature is far too relaxed for a prisoner. A prey that has been truly broken does not smile like that."

The Grizzled Commander stated, his tone firm.

Cultivator: "The Commander's caution is noted, but his worry is misplaced. I have observed the internal flow. The subject is completely severed from its corrupted energy. It cannot use its abilities or skills, and it is actively being purged from the inside out. It is neutralized."

The Serene Cultivator interjected smoothly, sitting cross-legged near the edge of the stage.

Before the Commander could argue, the Charismatic Conman tipped the brim of his stylish hat upward.

Conman: "Interesting conversation, truly. But unless you're looking to swindle a merchant out of a mining deed, I don't see how I'm of use here."

Finding no objections, the Charismatic Conman pulled his hat firmly over his eyes and leaned back in his chair, promptly going to sleep.

Taking the opportunity, Ray stepped toward the center of the stage, addressing the active council.

I need your assistance on two pressing issues. First, during the skirmish, the System confirmed a theory. I can supplement my Aether-Infused spells by siphoning the ambient Aether around us instead of purely draining my own core. It cuts my aether usage drastically.

Ray projected his thoughts and shared the data he had just received from the system.

The Eccentric Scholar practically vibrated with excitement, a chalkboard manifesting out of thin air beside him.

Scholar: "Fascinating! A hybrid aether-infusion casting model! The calculations involved to balance the disparate purities…"

But there's a catch.

Ray interrupted.

The System warned it's only seventy-three percent viable. Mixing the pure Aether from my core with the raw ambient energy introduces severe matrix instability, reducing the spell's overall spell casting stability by up to thirty percent 30% and the spell power and effectiveness by up to fifty percent.

Ray explained.

A dark, wet scoff echoed from the shadows. The Crimson Weaver leaned against the stage scaffolding, rolling his glowing eyes.

Weaver: "Calculations are for scribes, and the System is a rigid machine. You are overthinking it, boy. Why rely on a lifeless system's math when you have us? My ‘Mana Weaving’ paired with the Cultivator's ‘Aether Weaving’ can easily stitch those differing purities together. The stability issue is trivial if you just let us guide the flow."

The Crimson Weaver sneered condescendingly.

And the up to fifty percent reduction in spell power and effectiveness?

Ray asked as he blinked, surprised by the confidence of the Crimson Weaver.

Weaver: "Are you thick? If the spell is fifty percent weaker, just stuff fifty percent more ambient Aether into the spell matrix to compensate. The environment is practically drowning in it. Just open the floodgates."

The Crimson Weaver said as it looked at Ray as if he were incredibly dense.

Ray stood in stunned silence. The solution was so incredibly simple, so bluntly arrogant, yet completely brilliant. He completely ignored the Crimson Weaver's insult. He was amazed that the arrogant mage had just effortlessly solved a hard System limitation with raw intuition.
