The Legendary Method Actor
Chapter 348: Opening the Floodgates
Alright... that solves the casting drain. But it doesn't solve my main problem. If I am locked in a prolonged skirmish or if I am in an environment that has no rich ambient aether, I cannot simply sit down in a lotus position and use the Ashvane Method. I need a stable, combat-viable Aether recovery technique that I can trigger on the move. Something that bypasses the volatile nature of my current cultivation.
Ray explained re-focusing on his primary dilemma.
Cultivator: "There are other circulation techniques that I know. Methods that draw ambient energy while moving. But the recovery is so low, I fear they will not meet your requirements."
The Serene Cultivator said thoughtfully, stroking his chin.
Weaver: "Then we don't just breathe it in. We take it. Look at the vampires, They don't meditate. They tear the life-force and mana directly from the veins of their enemies. Siphon the blood, siphon the magic!"
The Crimson Weaver hissed, his eyes gleaming with renewed interest.
Scholar: "A parasitic energy loop… If we isolate the Weaver's concept of aggressive siphoning, strip away the biological necessity of blood, and combine it with the Cultivator's meridian channeling... we could theoretically create an Aether-vampirism technique. Striking an enemy could simultaneously drain their core and refill yours!"
The Eccentric Scholar muttered, then it suddenly started furiously scribbled on his chalkboard.
Cultivator: "It would require an incredibly delicate harmony of external theft and internal flow, but it is theoretically sound."
The Serene Cultivator mused, his interest visibly piqued.
The three wildly different archetypes locked eyes. An unspoken agreement passed between them.
Scholar: "Give us time, kid. We will come up with a methodology for you."
The Eccentric Scholar said, furiously erasing and rewriting magical formulas.
Satisfied that the problem was being handled by the best minds available to him, Ray exited the mindscape.
Returning to his physical senses, Ray continued to circulate the Ashvane Method. With the Domain of the Void long deactivated, he reached out through his soul, tugging on the invisible tether connected to Nox.
Instantly, a frantic, terrified voice flooded his mind.
Master! Master! The bond went dark! The void swallowed everything! Are you alive?!
Ray winced slightly at the sheer volume of the void-malkin's panic. He immediately projected the World-Weary Healer’s Calming Presence skill down the tether, washing the terrified familiar in a wave of clinical tranquility.
I am fine Nox. Everything is under control. In fact, we managed to capture the mysterious entity.
Ray projected back.
There was a long pause on the other end of the tether. The calm warred with Nox's deeply ingrained instincts.
Captured? Why 'captured' and not 'killed'? Master, that thing is an absolute anomaly. It should be eliminated!
Nox urged, his mental voice trembling.
Because I need answers,Stop hiding in the ruins and come to my position. You can track the link.
Ray replied flatly, refusing to elaborate further on his interrogation plans.
Do I have to? It is so nice here!
Nox grumbled, the very thought of being near an apex predator sending shivers down his shadowy spine.
Now, Nox.
...Yes, Master.
A couple of yards away, Svane stood like an iron statue, guarding the bound dark entity. The Vanguard rested his hands on the pommel of his sheathed broadsword, his eyes locked on the eerie, smiling creature.
Svane glanced over his shoulder. Ray was sitting in a perfect lotus position on the boulder, a faint, golden aura radiating from his skin.
Every battlefield instinct in Svane’s body was screaming at him to interrupt the young noble. They had the high-value target secured. They needed to evacuate the Whispering Hills immediately before the situation changed. But Svane bit his tongue. He knew that his Lord was still recovering . Interrupting the process could cause a catastrophic internal backlash.
Svane turned his attention back to the perimeter, reflecting bitterly on the recent skirmish. He had broken his limits. He had evolved from a Silver Aegis to a Gold Aegis. Yet, when the time came that his Lord needed him, he had choked. He had misfired a spell, suffered internal bleeding, and forced Ray to slow down and help him.
The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
I am still lacking. If I am to be his shield, a standard Gold Aegis is not enough. I have to push higher.
Svane thought, his grip tightening on his sword hilt.
On the boulder, Ray felt a deep sense of relief as his core officially crossed the fifty-percent threshold. He was finally out of the danger zone.
But the exact moment that wave of relief hit him, it was violently shattered.
A cold sense of danger fired straight down Ray’s spine. The Grizzled Commander’s passive Predator’s Intuition blared like a warhorn in the center of his mind, deafening him with the intensity of the warning.
Ray’s eyes snapped open. He broke his meditative posture.
He didn't need to look around to find the source of the threat. He could feel it, It was coming from the deep forest, the exact direction the corrupted beast pack had marched earlier.
He could feel their movements. They were coming back, and they were moving incredibly fast.
"My Lord? What is it?"
Svane asked, drawing his broadsword as he saw Ray suddenly stood up from his meditation.
"How?"
Ray whispered, entirely ignoring Svane's question.
He looked directly at the dark figure tied to the tree. The creature was completely immobile, its corrupted magic definitively suppressed by Ray's pure Aether. Yet, the featureless face was still pointed precisely toward the trembling forest, and the smile had grown impossibly wider.
Ray’s mind raced, replaying the combat scene with brutal clarity. He remembered the exact sequence of events. Svane had hoisted the creature off the ground. Ray had rushed forward, prepared to unleash his barrage of purging Anatomical Strikes.
And right there, in that tiny, fractional window of time before Ray's started to strike into its chest, the creature's frantic, rippling face had gone completely, perfectly calm.
Ray’s blood ran cold as the horrifying realization set in.
The entity hadn't gone calm because it had given up. It had gone calm because it had successfully executed its command. In the few seconds between Svane's charge towards the creature and Ray deactivating the Magnify Gravity spell up to the moment he was about to initiate the purge, the entity had unleashed the silent Corruption Resonance.
Ray's surgical strike had worked flawlessly, but he had been a couple of seconds too late.
The silent call had gone out. The apex predator had summoned its horde, and the entire corrupted beast pack was about to crash down upon them.
"Cut it down! Take it, we leave right now! The beast pack is coming!"
Ray barked, his voice sharp with absolute authority.
Svane blinked, momentary confusion flashing across his veteran features.
How?Ray disabled its magic. When did it…
Svane thought as he was hit with the realization.
The couple of seconds gap. The delay.
Svane concluded as a sharp pang of guilt pierced Svane’s chest.
If his magic hadn't misfired, if Ray hadn't been forced to slow down from their pursuit to cast a healing spell and stabilize his internal bleeding, that couple of seconds delay would have never existed.
But Svane was a professional. He viciously shoved the guilt down, his battlefield instincts taking over. He stepped forward and brought his broadsword down in a clean, heavy chop, severing the enchanted ropes binding the creature to the dead tree.
Because the ancient dwarven entity was only about four feet tall, Svane easily grabbed it by its matte-black armor and hoisted it entirely over his shoulder. Despite its impossible density, the Vanguard's immense physical strength made it look like he was carrying a stubborn child.
Unable to cast magic, Svane relied purely on his raw physical conditioning, dashing toward his Lord.
"Keep going! Head straight for the ridge where we left the array! I will follow right behind you, I just need to slow them down!"
Ray ordered as Svane closed the distance.
Without a single word of hesitation, Svane nodded and blew past Ray, his heavy boots tearing up the dirt as he bolted for the safety of the Aetheric Null-Veil.
As Svane moved away, Ray turned to face the treeline. He can feel that in the far distance, the misty forest was shaking. The guttural, echoing roars of corrupted predators were rushing through the fog.
System, initiate Concurrent Partial Immersion: The Serene Cultivator and The Crimson Weaver.
Ray’s eyes glowed with a terrifying mixture of bloodlust and absolute tranquility. It was time to test the theory.
He planted his feet and reached outward, visualizing the spell matrix of 1st-Circle spell: Entangle.
But this time, instead of pulling the massive sum of aether entirely from his own core, Ray opened his meridians to the world. He injected just enough of his pure Primordial Aether to serve as the spell's foundation.
Instantly, the dense, ambient Aether of the Whispering Hills surged toward the formation, eager to merge with the purity of his core.
The System had warned of a thirty percent reduction in spell casting stability and fifty percent spell power and effectiveness due to the clash of purities, but Ray remembered the Crimson Weaver's brutally simple advice:
Just open the floodgates.
Ray didn't just siphon a little ambient energy; he aggressively ripped a massive, suffocating volume of Aether directly from the surrounding air. The spell matrix began to violently shudder and destabilize under the sheer weight of the differing purities.
Weave it!
Ray mentally commanded.
The Crimson Weaver’s Mana Weaving violently lashed the clashing energies together with brute force, stitching the ambient power into the spell's framework, while the Serene Cultivator meticulously smoothed the internal flow, preventing the matrix from shattering under the pressure.
"Radices mundi, alliga!"
Ray chanted, thrusting his hands toward the earth.
The ground fifty yards ahead violently detonated.
Instead of simple grasping weeds, the earth was torn apart from the inside out. Hyper-dense, primordial roots, each as thick as an ancient tree trunk, erupted from the bedrock. They aggressively spiraled upward, instantly swallowing the forest path and transforming the terrain into a terrifying, writhing jungle.
[SKILLED APPLICATION DETECTED]
[EVENT: HYBRID AETHERIC INFUSION (EXPERIMENTAL)]
[PERFORMANCE EVALUATION: ADEPT]
[ANALYSIS: Host successfully utilized 'Mana Weaving' and 'Aether Weaving' to artificially stabilize a volatile mixture of internal and ambient Aether within a standardized spell matrix. While the execution lacked elegance and relied on brute-force overcompensation to negate the purity penalty, it was highly effective in achieving the desired tactical output without catastrophic backlash. Large mastery gain.]
[Mana Weaving: +15%, Aether Weaving: +10% (CAPSTONE already reached, adding half of mastery gain to the next archetype skill 'Body-Mind Harmony'), Arcane Improvisation: + 5%]
Ray breathed a heavy sigh, entirely satisfied with the wall of writhing golden roots.
It wouldn't kill the entire horde, but it would buy them the precious time they needed.
System, downgrade to Partial Immersion: The Stoic Assassin.
Ray commanded as the dual personas vanished, replaced by the icy, frictionless void of the killer.
He activated the Stoic Assassin’s Flowing Shadow Technique.
Ray blurred out of existence, bypassing local spatial friction to race after Svane. Moving at a very fast speed.
