The Legendary Method Actor

Chapter 346: The Knowing Grin

  • Next Chapter

The dark figure crashed through the dense, misty undergrowth of the Whispering Hills, tearing a chaotic path through the ancient forest. Behind it, the pursuit was relentless.

Svane sprinted with the terrifying momentum of an unburdened Vanguard, his heavy tower shield strapped to his back and his hands free. Trailing just behind him, Ray blurred through the misty air, utilizing the frictionless footwork of the Stoic Assassin’s Flowing Shadow Technique to effortlessly keep pace.

Though his body moved like a phantom, Ray’s mind was locked in a state of high-alert, he was observing the fleeing dark figure through the Serene Cultivator’s ‘Aetheric Perception’ and the World-Weary Healer’s ‘Diagnosis (Intermediate) skills. He is seeing a layered wireframe of energy over his physical vision.

What Ray saw made his blood run cold.

Inside the fleeing entity’s body, the seven purified nodes were failing. The tiny injections of Primordial Aether Ray had delivered were fighting a losing battle against the overwhelming, sheer volume of corruption. The sluggish, black tar was aggressively clawing its way back into the creature’s spine, re-establishing the severed meridians.

"Close the distance, Svane! The corruption is overriding my purge! If it reclaims those nodes, its abilities and magic will come back and the first thing it will do is summon its beast pack!"

Ray barked, his voice cutting through the fog.

Svane’s jaw tightened. Understanding the high stakes, the Gold Aegis reached deep into his core to push his body beyond its natural limits. While maintaining his dead sprint, he opened his mana gates, attempting to quickly weave the 3rd-Circle Haste spell.

"Tempus..."

Svane murmured under his heavy breath, forcing mana into his chest.

But as he cast, Svane’s magical circulation slammed directly into the ambient environment of the Whispering Hills.

Immediately, something felt horribly wrong.

Institutional magic relied on drawing perfect, exact geometric circles and runes to seamlessly bend the environment to the caster's will. But the Whispering Hills possessed a suffocatingly high ambient Aether density. The raw aether of the environment violently resisted being forced into Svane’s unnatural, rigid shapes.

To the Vanguard, channeling the spell felt like trying to carve perfect circles into thick, rapidly setting concrete. The immense physical and mental friction dragged at his focus, instantly doubling his cast time.

"...cede..."

Svane gritted his teeth, his neck veins bulging against his gorget. He tried to muscle through the resistance, forcing the heavy, volatile energy to conform to his will.

"Acc…"

It was a veteran’s mistake.

The rigid spell matrix simply could not hold the primordial pressure. The 3rd-Circle spell violently collapsed just a single syllable before completion.

The magical backlash detonated internally. Svane stumbled, his heavy boots skidding wildly across the damp earth as his internal mana circulation was thrown into absolute disarray. He coughed violently, a thick trickle of blood running down his chin as internal hemorrhages blossomed across his chest, the chaotic energy tearing at his organs from the inside out.

Through the Aetheric Perception, Ray instantly saw Svane’s internal meridians spasming in chaotic knots.

Healer: “The Gold Aegis’ internal pathways are compromised. Intervene immediately, or he will suffer fatal internal hemorrhaging.”

The World-Weary Healer warned in Ray's mind.

Weaver: “Look at this amateur choke on a little dense air! A true master bends the energy of the world, not let it break him!”

The Crimson Weaver sneered with arrogant delight.

Ray ignored the Crimson Weaver. Without breaking his stride, he closed the gap to his Vanguard, pressing a hand flat against Svane's armored back. He didn't rely on the System to automate the process; he manually pulled on his core, weaving the familiar, rigid geometric matrix of institutional magic while carefully shielding the cast from the heavy ambient pressure.

"Sana vulnera."

Ray chanted smoothly, his voice cutting clearly through the thick fog.

He cast the 1st-Circle spell: Cure Wounds.

A warm, soothing pulse of clean, white light washed into Svane's chest. It aggressively fused the micro-tears in the Vanguard's lungs and instantly stopped the internal bleeding. Just as Ray expected, the base spell did absolutely nothing to fix the spasming meridians, the chaotic Aether still jammed Svane's energy pathways, but it did the job it repaired the tearing flesh, stopping the internal bleeding.

Svane spat a mouthful of metallic-tasting saliva onto the dirt. The physical agony vanished, allowing him to maintain his dead sprint without stumbling. He looked at Ray in profound shock.

"How? The environment... it's too heavy. How did you cast that without a backlash?"

The spellsword gasped, his breath hitching slightly as his clogged mana gates throbbed.

Ray was momentarily stunned. He hadn't felt any friction. To him, casting the spell had felt as effortless as breathing.

In the Ambient Presence of his mind, the Serene Cultivator provided the answer.

Cultivator: “He fights the river, young master. But you are the river. Institutional mages attempt to force the world into boxes. Because of your Primordial Mana Affinity, your core naturally breathes and filters this dense Aether without conflict. To him, this environment is a poison of pressure. To you, it is oxygen.”

Not wanting to distract his Vanguard with a complex magical theory, Ray gave a dismissive shake of his head.

"It was just a 1st-Circle spell, Svane. Save your breath and keep running. I'll slow it down!"

Ahead of them, the dark figure crashed through a thicket of dead briars.

It was furious. The predator had never known humiliation like this. But as it ran, it felt the glorious, suffocating warmth of the corrupted energy finally re-entering its spinal nodes. It was only a matter of time before it could use its abilities again.

Realizing they were completely out of time, he reached deep into his core, pulling a surge of pure Primordial Aether, and aimed his open hand directly at the ground in the creature's path.

"Pondus absolutum!"

Ray incanted, his voice ringing out with heavy, ancient authority.

He cast an aether-infused 1st-Circle spell: Magnify Gravity.

He didn't just increase the weight of the air; he dictated the absolute gravitational constant of a localized ten-foot zone. He pulled down with the primordial, inescapable weight of a mountain.

The dark figure ran blindly into the singularity and was violently slammed downward.

Its corrupted, dense stone-form, previously its greatest defensive asset, instantly became a lethal liability. The matte-black stone-like body suddenly weighed thousands of pounds. The crushing downward pressure forced the creature to its knees. The physical ground cracked and violently sank beneath it, forming a perfectly compressed, bowl-shaped crater in the dirt.

The entity let out a soundless gasp, physically flattened against the earth, unable to lift its arms.

It felt a spike of genuine despair. It was trapped.

But then, as its chest was pressed into the dirt, it sensed something. A shift in the deep earth. A resonance it recognized. Its featureless face, previously rippling with frantic anger and desperation, abruptly smoothed out into an eerie, total calm.

"Now!"

Ray shouted.

Svane didn't hesitate. He charged directly to the edge of the crater.

Seeing his Vanguard in position, Ray instantly deactivated the aether-infused Magnify Gravity spell.

The exact moment the crushing primordial weight vanished, Svane lunged. The Gold Aegis threw his massive arms around the entity, hauling its impossibly dense body off the ground and trapping its heavy arms in a brutal, standing bear hug.

Ray blurred forward, closing the distance in a fraction of a second to stand squarely in front of the suspended creature. With the entity held upright, Ray was in a prime striking position.

He activated the World-Weary Healer’s ‘Anatomical Strike’ skill.

This time, Ray didn't hold back. He unleashed a relentless, blurring barrage of surgical strikes. His fingers and palms hammered directly into the creature's different body parts. With every single impact, Ray pumped a surge of his own concentrated Primordial Aether directly into the creature's central meridians, forcing the golden energy to aggressively burn out the corruption.

The physical toll was immense. Ray was pouring his very life-force into the creature to cleanse it. Sweat poured down Ray’s suddenly pale face. His breathing grew ragged as he practically emptied his core into the entity.

The dark figure violently shook and vibrated under the overwhelming influx of pure aether, its stone-like body convulsing, yet it remained eerily silent and calm within Svane's crushing grip.

A glaring red notification shattered Ray's vision.

[WARNING: HOST AETHER CAPACITY CRITICAL. LIFE-FORCE AT 20%. IMMINENT ORGAN FAILURE IF DEPLETION CONTINUES.]

Ray gasped, ripping his hands away and breaking the flow of energy.

He stumbled back, falling onto his hands and knees in the dirt, chest heaving. Through his Aetheric Perception, he desperately looked at the entity's internal wireframe.

The seven nodes were blindingly bright. The pure, golden Aether had successfully saturated the meridians, acting as a blazing, unyielding dam against the black tar. The corruption was completely suppressed. The battle of attrition was won.

"We did it."

Ray breathed, his voice hoarse.

He deactivated the Tri-Concurrent Partial Immersion. The icy calm of the Assassin and the spiritual tranquility of the Cultivator vanished, allowing the crushing, physical weight of pure exhaustion to slam into Ray all at once. His arms trembled as he wiped the sweat from his eyes, preparing to let out a long sigh of relief.

He looked up at the pinned entity.

Ray froze. The breath died in his throat.

The dark figure was securely trapped within Svane's bear hug. Its body was still vibrating from the violent internal purge.

But its featureless, matte-black face was no longer blank.

The ripples on its featureless face had shifted and locked into place, forming a distinct terrifying smile. It wasn't the smile of a cornered animal; it was the chilling, knowing grin of a creature that had just sprung a trap.

Svane, his heavy, armored forearms locked tightly around the entity’s torso, looked over at his Lord. The Vanguard frowned, deeply confused as to why the young noble suddenly looked infinitely more horrified now than when the brutal fight had first begun.
