THE LAST KEEPER
Chapter 458: EMBRACE
The glowing stardust in the center of the pavilion settled into three warm, solid figures. The soft golden light filled the starlit garden, illuminating their gentle smiles with breathtaking clarity.
On the left stood his birth mother, Rina, wearing the simple red traveling sash of ancient N’folu, her wild dark hair framing bright, laughing eyes that matched Sagiri’s own. On the right stood Bakuru and Rusha, dressed in the sturdy wool cloaks of the northern foothills.
Squad 25 stepped back toward the perimeter of the pavilion, giving their Chief the quiet space he needed. Kaka, Kiuga, Lira, and Kiana watched in solemn silence, their hearts full of deep respect.
Sagiri stood frozen in place, his breath trembling as he looked at the three people who had shaped his life. For sixteen years, he had carried their memory like a heavy, hollow ache, wondering if he had ever truly been loved.
Rina took the first step forward, her soft boots making no sound upon the white marble floor. Tears of pure maternal joy glistened in her dark eyes as she reached up, gently resting her warm palm against Sagiri’s cheek.
“Look at how strong and tall you have grown, my sweet boy,” Rina whispered, her voice like the soft rustling of desert palm leaves. “You have your father’s broad shoulders and my stubborn chin.”
“Mother…” Sagiri choked out, a single tear escaping his eye and rolling down over her gentle fingers. “You gave your life so I could escape the fire.”
“I gave my life so you could live free from hatred,” Rina replied softly, shaking her head with tender pride. “I carried the burden of the Archive alone in my youth, and I knew how it poisoned the soul with fear and secrecy.”
“I saw the dark path of vengeance in my sister Rika’s eyes,” Rina added with quiet sorrow. “I did not want that darkness to touch your pure heart, my sweet child.”
“I entrusted you to Bakuru and Rusha because I knew their hearts were larger than any mountain,” Rina continued, looking toward the northern couple with deep gratitude. “I wanted my son to grow up surrounded by real love, honest work, and warm laughter.”
Bakuru stepped forward, his broad, weathered carpenter’s face breaking into a wide, tearful grin. He opened his massive arms and pulled Sagiri into a crushing, familiar northern embrace that smelled of cedar shavings and woodsmoke.
“Look at you, boy!” Bakuru laughed through his tears, patting Sagiri’s back with his heavy, calloused hand. “Supreme Chief of the South, Master Sash of the North… but to us, you’ll always be the little boy who fell asleep on our workshop bench.”
Rusha stepped in beside them, wrapping her gentle arms around Sagiri’s neck as she pressed a warm kiss against his temple. “You carried so much pain in silence, my sweet child. But you never lost your gentle heart.”
“I tried to make you proud, Father, Mother,” Sagiri whispered into Rusha’s shoulder, his arms holding them both with fierce, trembling love. “I fought to protect the people, just like you taught me.”
“You made us prouder than words can ever say,” Rusha said softly, gently wiping the tears from his cheeks. “And look at the wonderful brothers and sisters you found along the way.”
Rusha turned toward the squad, her warm eyes resting upon Lira with deep maternal affection. She walked over to the young healer and took Lira’s small hands into her own, pressing them with heartfelt gratitude.
“Thank you, little healer,” Rusha whispered to Lira, her voice full of tenderness. “Thank you for holding his hand in the dark, and for giving him the warmth he needed to stay alive.”
Lira blushed softly, fresh tears brimming in her misty grey eyes as she bowed her head with quiet humility. “He is my dearest friend, Mother Rusha. I would cross any blizzard to keep him safe.”
Bakuru turned to Kaka, Kiuga, Maita, Zolinka, and Ulekai, his carpenter’s eyes filled with deep northern warrior respect. “Thank you, lads, for watching his back on the battlefield. A man is only as strong as the brothers who stand beside him.”
“We’d follow him into ten hellpools, sir,” Kiuga answered with a respectful bow. “Sagiri gave us a purpose, and we will guard his dream of a united realm.”
“And he owes us a massive dinner in the capital!” Kaka added with a proud northern laugh, wiping his nose with his sleeve. “Squad 25 never leaves family behind!”
Young Ulekai wiped his eyes with a bright smile, while Maita and Zolinka placed their hands over their hearts in sincere honor of the parents who had raised their Chief.
Rina stepped toward Lady Kiana, her dark eyes meeting Kiana’s dust-rose gaze with ancient, peaceful understanding. Rina placed her right hand over her heart in the traditional N’folu salute, bowing with genuine humility.
“For thousands of years, our two clans lived in fear and exile,” Rina said to Kiana. “Thank you for breaking the ancient silence and opening the bridge for my son.”
Lady Kiana returned the salute with perfect Sekana grace, bowing her head in deep honor. “The exile of the Fourth Tribe is over, Matriarch Rina. The South will walk as one united lineage from this day forward.”
Rina smiled with radiant joy, turning back to stand alongside Bakuru and Rusha in the center of the pavilion. The three parents reached out together, placing their hands over Sagiri’s glowing chest.
“You have broken the curse of the Five Thousand Years, Sagiri,” Rina declared, her voice ringing with the eternal blessing of his ancestors. “You did not use our power to seek vengeance, but to heal a broken world.”
“Live a long, full life, son,” Bakuru said, his warm voice echoing in Sagiri’s bones. “Love your friends, build your new home, and never be afraid to laugh in the sunshine.”
A wave of pure, golden parental light flowed from their hands directly into Sagiri’s spiritual core. The last lingering shadow of childhood trauma dissolved completely, leaving his spirit pure, whole, and brimming with eternal strength.
Their silhouettes began to soften into sparkling golden stardust, rising gently toward the starlit sky like a shower of falling stars. They waved one final, loving farewell as their presence merged peacefully into the permanent foundation of the Living Memory.
Sagiri stood tall in the center of the starlit pavilion, his heart overflowing with absolute peace. He turned toward Squad 25, his eyes shining with serene golden-silver light as the ultimate dawn of the Last Keeper arrived.
