THE LAST KEEPER
Chapter 451: NEAR DEATH
Inside the sealed basin of Karokai, the temperature dropped to an unnatural, bone-chilling freeze. Sagiri sat motionless upon the flat bedrock slab, his entire mortal body encased in glossy black obsidian stone.
The dark mineral crust had spread across his chest, leaving only a tiny speck of pale skin directly above his heart. His physical pulse had slowed to a single, agonizing beat per minute, teetering on the absolute edge of clinical death.
Frost coated his eyelashes and frozen hair, while faint violet sparks sputtered along his stiff collar. His mortal body had become a statue of black glass, waiting for the final spark of life to extinguish forever.
Outside the black barrier, the storm began to subside, but the tension around the glowing formation grew suffocatingly tight. Lira knelt in the frost, her trembling fingers pressed hard against the carved wooden shyflower pendant.
“His heart is only beating once every sixty seconds,” Lira cried softly, her voice breaking with overwhelming grief and exhaustion. “The cellular lifeforce I am sending from out here cannot penetrate the mineral crust anymore.”
“His physical anchor is snapping,” Lady Kiana announced, her dust-rose eyes glowing with intense silver luminescence. “If his soul remains trapped alone inside the core for another few minutes, his spirit will permanently sever from his body.”
“Then what do we do?!” Kaka roared, his fists clenched tight as tears of frustration welled in his eyes. “We didn’t ride through a blizzard just to watch our chief turn into a gravestone!”
“We cannot pull him out from the outside,” Kiuga said, his sharp tactical mind calculating the only remaining option. “We have to project our spirits into the Archive and drag him out ourselves.”
Lady Kiana nodded in grim agreement, raising her slender hands above the six silver needles. “I can expand the Sekana void resonance to open a full spiritual corridor directly into the core of the Living Memory.”
“Your physical bodies will remain asleep here on the frozen gravel,” Master Sandshade Koru warned, stepping forward alongside General Zafaru. “If your spirits fall inside the Archive, none of you will ever wake up.”
Bukata struggled to his feet, wincing in sharp pain as the heavy linen bandages around his cracked ribs tightened against his chest. “I’m going in with you,” Bukata growled, his voice rough and strained from his severe injuries.
Marshal Salka placed a firm, heavy hand on Bukata’s broad shoulder, stopping the wounded warrior in his tracks. “You stay on the surface, Bukata. Your cracked ribs and internal bleeding will not survive the spiritual separation.”
“Listen to the Marshal,” Kiuga said gently, placing a hand on Bukata’s arm. “We need a strong warrior guarding our physical shells on the ground alongside General Zafaru, Salka, and N’varu.”
Bukata looked down at his bandaged chest, then nodded with reluctant understanding. He placed his massive hand on Kaka’s shoulder, his voice filled with iron trust. “Bring our chief home, brother.”
“Count on it,” Kaka promised, his fierce northern resolve burning brightly as he turned back to the glowing formation.
With the wounded Bukata safely positioned to guard the perimeter, Kiuga, Kaka, Lira, Lady Kiana, Maita, Zolinka, and Ulekai formed the inner spiritual circle. They sat cross-legged upon the frozen gravel, locking their hands firmly together in an unbroken chain of living will.
“We will guard your physical shells with our lives,” General Zafaru declared, nocking a heavy sand-arrow to his bowstring as N’varu drew her twin scout blades.
Titan serpent Zaira lowered her massive head over the circle, forming a warm, impenetrable dome with her heavy neck scales. She rumbled softly, lending her steady beast resonance to protect their sleeping forms from the freezing mountain wind.
“Close your eyes and breathe together,” Kiana commanded, her voice ringing with ancient authority. “Follow the silver thread and do not lose sight of each other.”
Kiana struck the center needle with her palm, releasing a blinding flash of silver void energy that engulfed the squad. In an instant, their physical heads slumped forward into deep unconsciousness, their spirits shooting upward in a radiant beam of light.
Far below in the bottomless depths of the Archive, Sagiri’s spiritual vision was beginning to fade into gray shadows. The physical toll on his mortal body was dragging his consciousness down toward absolute nonexistence.
He fell to one knee upon the shattered glass floor, leaning heavily against the hilt of Nokai to keep from collapsing completely. The Five Relics inside his bloodstream flickered like dying candles in a winter storm.
“Just a little longer,” Sagiri gasped through frozen lips, fighting with every ounce of his remaining willpower to keep his eyes open. “Do not close your eyes, Sagiri… hold on…”
In front of him, the dark outer layers of the void sphere had peeled away completely, revealing a magnificent core of pure, radiant silver crystal. The true Living Memory hovered in the center of the hall, pulsing with gentle, ancient clarity.
You have proven your courage, Last Keeper, the crystal core resonated with a calm, peaceful voice that carried no malice. For five thousand years, every Keeper took the entire weight of our history into their own solitary mind.
They hid our secrets in fear, isolating themselves from the world until the burden crushed their mortal frames, the voice explained with profound sorrow. The eighteenth-year curse was never a law of nature; it was the inevitable collapse of a lonely heart.
“A lonely heart…” Sagiri whispered, his fingers slipping on the cold steel of his sword as his strength drained away. “No single man was ever meant to carry the memory of an entire world alone.”
The Living Memory only survives when it is shared, the core answered gently. To master the Archive and save your mortal shell, you must open the gates and let the living stand beside you.
Sagiri felt his final heartbeat echo through his chest, a single, fading thud that seemed to signal the end of his mortal journey. His eyelids grew impossibly heavy, and his hand slipped entirely from Nokai’s hilt as darkness rushed in to claim him.
“I am sorry, everyone…” Sagiri murmured, his body tilting toward the cold glass floor. “I tried my best…”
CRASH!
A deafening sound of shattering spatial glass tore through the high ceiling of the dark sanctum. A colossal pillar of brilliant emerald and silver light crashed down into the center of the hall, blasting away the creeping shadows.
Sagiri opened his heavy eyes in shock as seven familiar figures stepped out from the radiant pillar of light, their spiritual forms solid and glowing with vibrant lifeforce.
Kaka stood at the front with his twin battleaxes resting on his broad shoulders, a wide, fierce grin spreading across his scarred northern face. Beside him, Kiuga held his tactical commander’s scroll, his sharp eyes surveying the cosmic chamber with complete confidence.
Lira rushed forward with tears of joy shining in her misty grey eyes, her hands glowing with brilliant emerald cellular light as she dropped to her knees beside him. She wrapped her warm arms around his trembling shoulders, pouring soothing lifeforce straight into his fading heart.
“You don’t get to apologize yet, Chief,” Kaka laughed, planting his heavy boot on the glass floor beside Sagiri’s blade. “Squad 25 is here, and we’re not leaving until we kick this void into submission together!”
Maita, Zolinka, and Ulekai formed an impenetrable circular defense around them, their spectral weapons drawn and ready for battle. Standing beside Kiuga was Lady Kiana, her silver void needles hovering around her hands like a crown of stars.
Sagiri looked up at the circle of his dearest companions, feeling a surge of warmth exploding through his frozen veins. The Five Relics in his chest reignited with blinding brilliance, and the true apotheosis of the Last Keeper began.
