THE LAST KEEPER

Chapter 450: ZAIRA’S VIGILS

  • Next Chapter

The vertical strike of Nokai cracked the outer shell of the dark sphere, sending blinding silver light bursting through the sanctum. Deep fissures spread across the surface of the void core, releasing a heavy groan of collapsing energy.

Instead of shattering completely, the fractured core began to contract with terrifying speed, generating a powerful vortex of spatial gravity. The immense pull dragged against Sagiri’s boots, threatening to swallow him whole into its collapsing center.

Sagiri drove the blade deeper into the floor, anchoring himself against the crushing suction with every ounce of his remaining strength. Around him, the mirrored walls of the hall trembled violently as the trial entered its most dangerous phase.

Meanwhile, on the frozen surface of Karokai Valley, the mountain world was breaking apart under the energetic backlash. The black spatial dome began to shudder, sending jagged shockwaves of void pressure tearing through the stone cliffs.

Colossal boulders broke loose from the towering spires above, tumbling down through the blizzard toward the circular basin. Sharp fragments of black spatial glass peeled away from the dome, whistling through the freezing gale like razor blades.

Seeing the deadly shower of stone and void shards descending upon the exhausted squad, titan serpent Zaira let out an earth-shaking roar. Her massive crimson eyes burned with fierce protective fury as her titan body surged across the frozen gravel.

Zaira coiled her colossal, armored frame in a towering double ring around the squad’s formation. She raised her thick neck high into the storm, taking the full brunt of the falling boulders against her diamond-hard back scales.

The heavy rocks smashed against her scales with deafening crashes, shattering into harmless dust and pebbles. Razor-sharp spatial shards sliced into her armored flanks, drawing dark trails of blood, but the giant serpent did not flinch or shift her position by a single inch.

Inside the protective circle of her coils, the biting wind was completely blocked, creating a calm, sheltered pocket for the cadets. Lira, Kiuga, Kaka, and the rest of Squad 25 remained undisturbed, their hands locked tightly together as their green-silver beam continued to hum.

Zaira lowered her massive snout against the base of the black dome, pressing her cheek directly against the smooth crystal. She looked through the dark glass at Sagiri’s frozen, obsidian-covered body sitting motionless upon the bedrock slab.

A deep, shuddering whimper rumbled from her throat, and large, warm tears rolled down her scaly snout, melting the frost on the stone below. She nudged the barrier gently with her nose, as if trying to wake her sleeping master from a nightmare.

“Look at her,” General Zafaru murmured, stepping up beside Marshal Salka under the shelter of Zaira’s massive shoulder. “A primordial titan serpent, shedding tears for a mortal boy.”

“She knows he is fighting for his life on the other side of that glass,” Salka replied, his hand resting firmly on the hilt of his curved saber. “The bond between a Keeper and his beast is older than any kingdom in this realm.”

Master Sandshade Koru stepped forward, placing his wrinkled hand upon Zaira’s lower jaw. He closed his pupil-less white eyes, sensing the deep acoustic vibrations building inside the serpent’s broad chest.

“She is channeling the primordial frequency of the South,” Koru explained, looking back at the officers with ancient reverence. “She is preparing to use the Beast Call to anchor his soul.”

Zaira took a deep breath of the freezing mountain air, expanding her massive ribcage until her scales flared open. She opened her jaws and released a long, low-frequency sonic hum that vibrated the bedrock deep into the earth.

The sound was not an aggressive battle cry; it was the ancient song of the southern titan beasts calling their pack home. The sonic waves traveled straight through the granite foundations of the valley, bypassing the spatial barrier and sinking deep into the abyss below.

Inside the deep sanctum of the Archive, the crushing gravitational pull of the core was beginning to bend Sagiri’s spiritual spine. The dark vortex tore at his clothes and pulled at his limbs, trying to drag his consciousness into total compression.

Suddenly, a familiar, deep rumble vibrated through the glass floor beneath his boots. The sound was warm, steady, and filled with unconditional loyalty, cutting cleanly through the roaring noise of the void.

Sagiri recognized the frequency instantly; it was the voice of Zaira calling to him through the rock. The acoustic resonance of the Beast Horn inside his chest flared to life, matching the serpent’s call note for note.

The sound waves acted like a physical lifeline, cutting through the spatial distortion and giving him a clear directional compass. Sagiri planted his back foot with newfound stability, feeling the solid weight of the northern mountains supporting his stance.

“Zaira is holding the line on the surface,” Sagiri whispered, a faint smile touching his pale lips amidst the roaring storm. “I cannot let my partner down.”

He channeled the sonic vibration from his chest into Nokai, sending a powerful wave of acoustic force bursting along the blade. The sound wave detonated inside the cracked core, completely halting its inward collapse and stabilizing the vortex.

Back on the surface, Lira felt a sudden shift in the energy flow through her silver needles. Her emerald cellular aura flared brightly, and she opened her eyes with a gasp of pure relief.

“The crystallization has stopped spreading!” Lira announced, her voice filled with hope as she looked around at her exhausted squad mates. “The dark stone has halted right at the edge of his heart valves!”

“Is his pulse stabilizing?” Kiuga asked, wiping cold sweat from his brow without breaking his mental concentration.

“His heart is still beating very slowly, but the rhythm is steady now,” Lira answered, nodding quickly. “Zaira’s call bought us the crucial time we needed.”

Kaka let out a rough laugh, leaning his heavy forehead against Lira’s shoulder for a brief second of relief. “Good work, big girl! When we get our chief back, I’m roasting an entire mountain elk just for you!”

Bukata grinned weakly through the pain of his cracked ribs, while Zolinka and Maita exchanged relieved nods in the frost. Even young Ulekai let out a quiet sigh, his small hands holding tight to the shared formation.

Lady Kiana watched the beam of light holding steady, a rare, gentle expression softening her sharp features. She knew that the most dangerous spiritual threshold was approaching, but for the first time, she truly believed they would bring Sagiri back alive.

Zaira rumbled softly in response to Kaka’s words, her crimson eyes blinking with tired affection as she kept her massive body wrapped securely around the squad. Above them, the falling rocks began to slow, though the sky over the valley remained pitch-black.

Back in the depths of the Archive, the fractured void sphere began to glow with a strange, quiet luminescence. The outer layers of black shadow were peeling away, revealing the glowing inner heart of the Living Memory.

Sagiri stood before the radiant core, his breath steady and his blade held firmly in hand. He knew the final threshold had arrived, and the ultimate choice of the Last Keeper was waiting for him in the light.
