THE LAST KEEPER

Chapter 449: SOLITARY STRUGGLE

The dark shockwave from the central core tore through the hall, sending deep cracks shooting across the obsidian floor. A ferocious tempest of black void energy surged toward Sagiri, roaring with the voices of a million forgotten soldiers.

The Archive no longer tried to soothe him into sleep; it tried to crush his individuality by sheer force. A relentless torrent of raw historical data, forgotten names, ancient troop movements, and tactical doctrines flooded directly into his brain.

The mental pressure was so intense that Sagiri fell to one knee, the glass cracking beneath his armored shin. He felt the memories of his childhood slipping away, threatened with replacement by the cold, endless records of dead centuries.

“You are just a vessel,” the dark core thundered, its voice echoing from every mirrored wall in the chamber. “You are the container of our history, not a boy with personal desires. Forget your mortal name and become the Archive.”

Sagiri pressed both hands against his temples, his teeth grinding so hard that his jaw ached. The flood of cold information tried to wash away the face of his mother and the memories of his first days in the Northern academy.

“I am not just a container,” Sagiri gasped out, forcing his head up against the heavy crushing gravity of the void. “My name is Sagiri of N’folu. I am the son of Rina, the ward of Bakuru and Rusha, and a cadet of Squad 25.”

He focused his thoughts entirely on the people he had sworn to protect, speaking their names into the roaring darkness one by one. “Kiuga,” he said firmly, picturing his friend’s sharp eyes analyzing battlefield maps by the dim light of an oil lamp in their shared dormitory.

A spark of golden light flared in his chest, pushing back a layer of the invading darkness. “Kaka,” he shouted next, remembering the stubborn northern warrior swinging his heavy battleaxes and laughing loudly in the middle of a freezing blizzard.

With every name he spoke, a new layer of his true identity locked into place like solid iron armor. “Lira,” he whispered, feeling the warm, soothing memory of her green cellular aura healing his torn muscles after brutal combat drills in the Northern yard.

“Bukata! Maita! Zolinka! Ulekai!” Sagiri called out, standing back up on his two feet as the Five Relics inside his bloodstream resonated with his defiance. “Kiana! Azir! Marshal Salka! Grand Marshal Senraki!”

He remembered Bukata holding the line with his dented tower shield, refusing to retreat even when his ribs were fractured in battle. He remembered Maita moving like a silent shadow through enemy camps, and Zolinka preparing alchemical darts with meticulous precision.

He remembered young Ulekai sharing dry honey bread with a cheerful smile, and Lady Kiana choosing to reclaim her humanity instead of remaining an empty weapon. He remembered young City Lord Azir running across the sunlit rooftops of Thazir, shouting with fierce pride that they were brothers for life.

He remembered the iron discipline of Marshal Salka standing on the fortress walls, and the profound wisdom of Grand Marshal Senraki guiding him through the darkness. Every face gave him strength, turning his fragile mortal spirit into an unyielding fortress.

The names formed an unbreakable chain of living bonds, shielding his mind from the cold database of the past. The flood of historical data slowed down, unable to wash away a man whose heart was firmly anchored to the living.

Meanwhile, on the frozen surface of Karokai Valley, the physical struggle had reached its most dangerous threshold. Inside the sealed dome, Sagiri’s mortal body was almost completely encased in black obsidian stone.

The dark mineral shell covered his legs, torso, neck, and jaw, leaving only a small circle of pale flesh over his left breast. His physical pulse had slowed to a single, heavy thud every three minutes, so faint that even Lira struggled to detect it.

Outside the barrier, Lira knelt in the freezing frost, her face pale and her lips blue from the bitter mountain gale. She poured every remaining drop of her cellular lifeforce into the silver needles, directing the green healing beam straight toward that unpetrified patch over his heart.

“Hold on, Sagiri,” Lira whispered through trembling lips, tears freezing onto her eyelashes. “Do not let the stone take your heart. We are right here with you.”

“His pulse is too slow, Kiuga!” Kaka yelled, his hands shaking as he poured his physical vitality into the shared formation. “The obsidian is creeping across his collarbones! If that circle closes, he’s gone!”

“Maintain the rhythm!” Kiuga commanded with iron discipline, his voice cutting through the panic. “Sagiri is fighting the core right now. If our mental bridge breaks, the void will swallow his ego completely.”

Bukata, Maita, Zolinka, and Ulekai leaned into the circle, their foreheads pressed against their locked hands. Despite their exhaustion and the freezing wind, not a single member of the squad pulled back an inch.

Behind them, Marshal Salka and General Zafaru drew their weapons, forming a defensive perimeter around the exhausted cadets. Spatial lightning began to arc from the top of the black dome, splitting the mountain air with sharp, thunderous cracks.

“The spatial fabric around the basin is destabilizing,” Master Sandshade Koru warned, watching the dark crystal hum with violent vibrations. “The boy is forcing the core to submit. Either he masters the Archive in the next few minutes, or the entire valley will collapse into a spatial void.”

Lady Kiana kept her eyes closed, her dust-rose eyes shining with bright silver light beneath her lids. She guided the Sekana void resonance with surgical precision, clearing away the turbulence that threatened to tear their mental link apart.

Back inside the deep sanctum of the Archive, Sagiri took a heavy step forward, his boots crunching against the shattered glass floor. The twenty floating blades of Nokai reformed their orbital circle around his shoulders, blazing with intense silver-veined light.

The massive dark sphere in the center of the hall pulsed with frantic energy, launching waves of black void needles to stop his advance. Sagiri moved with fluid, practiced precision, executing the ancestral blade dances of N’folu combined with northern iron parries.

His sword moved in tight, economical arcs, deflecting every incoming needle with sharp rings of void energy. He did not waste a single motion, advancing steadily toward the spinning core with the calm focus of an elite Galka warrior.

“You have lived in fear of being forgotten for five thousand years,” Sagiri spoke directly to the core, his voice steady and clear above the storm. “You hoard every drop of grief because you think pain is the only truth of this world.”

He stepped inside the core’s defensive perimeter, raising Nokai high above his head with both hands. The Five Relics in his blood flared together, merging their power into the dark steel until the blade shone like a miniature sun.

“I will not let you be forgotten,” Sagiri declared, looking into the swirling depths of the black sphere. “And I will not let you destroy the future to preserve the past.”

Sagiri brought the radiant blade down in a clean, vertical strike, slicing straight through the outer shell of the dark void core. A blinding explosion of silver light burst from the point of impact, tearing through the darkness of the sanctum.
