THE LAST KEEPER
Chapter 431: BREACHING THE SEA-GATE
The massive iron sea-gate of Glacial Lanka rose two hundred feet into the stormy sky, sealing the icy fjord like a solid wall of black steel.
Heavy icicles hung from the jagged iron teeth of the portcullis, while dozens of automated steam cannons swept the dark waters for incoming vessels.
A league out, the allied armada held its position in the freezing mist, their dark sails reefed to avoid catching the harsh artillery light.
On the flagship’s high prow, Lady Kiana rested low on the balls of her boots, crouched on the narrow wooden railing like a sleek predator eyeing its prey.
Her dark Sekana leather was dusted with snow, her gloved fingers resting lightly on her knees while her dust-rose eyes mapped the humming power conduits running along the iron gate.
The wind howled around her lithe frame, but she did not sway an inch, completely anchored in her feline balance as her aura settled into an eerie, soundless void.
"The main locking mechanism is buried in the eastern cliff," Kiana whispered softly, her voice cutting through the whistling gale. "The thermal sensors will roast anything with a heartbeat within fifty paces."
Sagiri stood just below her on the deck, his hand resting on the hilt of Nokai as the silver veins along the dark blade hummed with quiet resonance.
"Can you blind them?" Sagiri asked, looking up at her calm silhouette against the gray sky.
Kiana tilted her head, a faint, dangerous smile touching her lips as she adjusted the silver void needles tucked between her knuckles.
"The Void has no heat, Keeper," she answered softly. "To their machines, I do not exist."
Without another sound, Kiana slipped off the railing, dropping twenty feet into the icy black water without creating a single splash.
Sagiri leaped right behind her, activating the Archive’s spatial veil to mask his descent as the freezing ocean swallowed them both.
Beneath the surface, the water was pitch-black and bitter with alchemical waste, but Kiana moved through the depths with effortless, ghost-like speed.
She glided toward the sheer iron foundation of the sea-gate, scaling the jagged, ice-slick metal like a shadow climbing a wall.
Reaching the primary sensor housing thirty feet above the water, Kiana slipped through a narrow steam vent with fluid, feline agility.
Inside the control chamber, half a dozen automated sentries patrolled the iron catwalks, their mechanical red eyes sweeping the frosty air.
Kiana dropped from the rafters silently, landing in a low crouch directly behind the lead sentry.
With a lightning flicker of her wrists, two silver void needles slipped between her fingers, sliding effortlessly into the sentry’s central power core.
The machine went completely dark before it could emit an alarm, collapsing into her waiting hands without making a sound.
Moving like a phantom through the chamber, Kiana repeated the strike five more times, neutralizing every sentry in a handful of heartbeats.
She reached the massive control panel, thrusting three void needles into the main hydraulic relay to short-circuit the thermal alarm network.
Sagiri phased through the chamber’s iron intake grate, landing lightly beside her as Nokai hummed in his grip.
"The sensors are dead," Kiana said, stepping back into the shadows. "The manual release is yours."
"Nokai, sever," Sagiri commanded quietly.
Four Silver-Veined Void Blades detached from his back, shooting across the room like silver lightning bolts.
The blades sliced through the four massive iron counterweight chains in a single, surgical stroke.
A deafening groan of tortured iron echoed through the canyon as the massive sea-gate began to grind open.
The two-hundred-foot iron doors parted, revealing the inner harbor of Glacial Lanka to the waiting armada outside.
High above on the citadel ramparts, emergency sirens suddenly shrieked into the storm, their red warning lights painting the snow in bloody hues.
"Intruders at the gate!" mechanical broadcast horns blared across the cliffs. "Deploy the Iron Vanguard!"
Heavy iron gates along the rocky shoreline slammed open, and fifty colossal Frost-Plated Siege Golems marched onto the beachhead.
Each golem was twelve feet of reinforced steel, spewing scalding steam from heavy boiler stacks and swinging massive spiked wrecking balls.
Behind them marched hundreds of frost-armored enforcers, their heavy crossbows leveled at the opening gate.
Before the machines could fire a single volley, a thunderous war cry shook the frozen canyon from the outer mist.
Three blood-red warships smashed through the opening sea-gate, their iron rams plowing through ice shelves with unstoppable momentum.
At the highest prow stood Supreme Mandra Taziraka, his crimson beast aura exploding outward like a blazing furnace in the arctic cold.
"Tear them to pieces!" the Mandra roared, the sound rattling the iron plating of the siege towers.
Taziraka activated the Art of the Beast, his golden eyes turning into razor-sharp vertical slits as the shadowy silhouette of an enormous predator engulfed his frame.
The Mandra launched himself off the ship, crossing eighty feet of open air in the blink of an eye.
He slammed directly into the lead siege golem, his bare claw-strike hitting the machine’s chest plate with the force of a falling meteor.
The twelve-foot steel golem collapsed backward, its thick iron breastplate caved in and its internal steam boiler rupturing in an explosion of scalding mist.
Before the surrounding machines could react, the Mandra moved in a terrifying display of time-dilated speed.
He ducked beneath a sweeping wrecking ball, vaulted onto a golem’s broad shoulders, and tore its armored head clean off with his bare hands.
Behind him, three hundred Tagan warriors swarmed the beachhead like a pack of rabid wolves, their eyes burning with feral crimson light.
They fought with terrifying savagery, their clawed hands and heavy stone-crushing fists shattering steel joints and ripping through armored plating.
The automated enforcers had no emotions and knew no fear, but against the raw, primordial fury of the Tagan Clan, their cold logic was useless.
Grand Zorath Zaka and Kaka charged off the northern galleys, their heavy war axes flashing in the red siren light as they joined the vanguard.
Kaka roared a mighty northern battle cry, burying his bearded axe deep into a golem’s knee joint and bringing the metal giant crashing down.
"Clear the docks!" Kaka yelled, his axes spinning in bloody arcs that shattered frost shields and severed steam lines.
General Zafaru’s southern spearmen poured through the breach behind them, locking their bronze shields to form an impenetrable perimeter along the docks.
High atop the sea-gate control tower, Sagiri and Kiana watched the allied host overwhelm the outer defenses in a tidal wave of blood and iron.
Supreme Mandra Taziraka stood atop a pile of shattered siege golems on the bloodstained snow, his chest heaving as his red beast aura pulsed triumphantly.
"The beachhead is secured, Keeper!" the Mandra bellowed up toward the tower, shaking steam oil from his claws.
Sagiri stepped to the edge of the catwalk, looking past the ruined docks toward the massive iron blast doors embedded in the mountain base.
Marshal Salka and Grand Marshal Senraki appeared beside him, their dark stealth cloaks untouched by the snow.
"That entrance leads directly into the subterranean slave pits," Senraki said, his sharp eyes narrowing with cold focus. "My father is waiting deep inside."
Sagiri gripped Nokai, his dual-colored eyes flashing with cold, incandescent light.
"Then we don’t keep him waiting," Sagiri said.
