THE LAST KEEPER
Chapter 430: FROZEN SEA
The freezing northern gale screamed across the open water, tearing sea spray over the wooden bows of five hundred warships.
Colossal walls of black glacial ice drifted through the snow like sleeping monsters, groaning under dark ocean currents.
At the head of the armada sailed The Sovereign of Tasaka, its iron ram smashing through floating ice floes with steady thuds.
Sagiri stood at the high forecastle, his dark cloak whipping in the wind as frost bit at his skin.
Along his spine, the ancient bone-metal of Nokai hummed with quiet vibration, sending silver pulses through the dark runes on his arms.
Above him, crouched on the narrow edge of the ship’s carved iron prow, Lady Kiana rested low on the balls of her boots like a hunting cat against the stormy sky.
One gloved hand rested lightly against the frosted metal for balance, her dark, form-fitting Sekana leather outlining her lithe silhouette as her dust-rose eyes surveyed the thick fog with eerie void calm.
"The frost in the air is not natural," Kiana murmured from her high perch, her voice carrying over the wind without shifting an inch of her balance. "There is alchemical oil in the water. King Vanka’s defenses are waking up."
Sagiri narrowed his dual-colored eyes, watching the dark water swirl against the hull.
’We are sailing straight into the belly of the beast,’ Sagiri thought, feeling the faint ache in his chest where the five absorbed relics burned.
Before he could speak, a deep groan tore through the freezing fog to their western flank.
It was the heavy wail of an ancient war horn carved from the skull of a colossal mountain beast.
The sound was so raw that the wooden deck trembled, silencing the southern spearmen on the lower deck.
Three massive war-galleys carved from black ironwood pushed through the mist, their blood-red sails marked with black beast claws.
An overwhelming, suffocating presence rolled off the lead ship, washing over the fleet like the killing intent of an ancient apex predator.
The spearmen stepped back on instinct, gripping their weapons with sweating palms.
It was the secluded host of the Tagan Clan, descending from their holy mountain after three centuries of isolation.
At the prow stood Supreme Mandra Taziraka.
The Mandra wore thick predator hides stitched with bronze wire, his broad shoulders squared against the blizzard.
His golden eyes burned with sharp vertical slit pupils that cut through the thick snow like twin lanterns.
Behind him stood three hundred Tagan warriors, their bare chests marked with claw scars and surrounded by rippling beast auras.
The Mandra launched himself across thirty feet of open water, landing on the flagship deck with a heavy, bone-rattling thud.
"Supreme Mandra," Sagiri greeted him calmly, stepping forward as Nokai’s silver light pulsed along his collarbone. "I did not expect your clan to leave the sacred mountains."
Taziraka’s wild gaze locked onto Sagiri, a terrifying mixture of ancient pride and raw savagery oozing from his frame.
"Our ancestors swore to remain apart from mortal squabbles," Taziraka growled, his voice carrying the rough grind of stone.
He stepped closer, his heavy fists crackling with dark crimson energy.
"But Senraki and that parasite in Lanka crossed a line blood cannot forgive," the Mandra snarled, his slit pupils narrowing.
"They murdered Tsaka," Taziraka continued, the air turning hot with beast-like rage. "They turned living men into hollow puppets. The mountains could no longer hold our fangs."
Kaka stepped up from the gangway, his heavy twin war axes resting on his shoulders as a broad northern grin broke across his face.
"Good," Kaka chuckled deeply, unbothered by the Mandra’s aura. "The bigger the pack, the faster we butcher them."
Kiuga followed behind, scanning the western ships and calculating their speed.
"We have three leagues before the strait narrows," Kiuga warned, pointing to two ice cliffs ahead. "If they want to bottle us up, it will be there."
As if on cue, the black water around the fleet surged into violent whirlpools.
High above on the glacial cliffs, mechanical shutters slammed open, revealing fortified ballista towers carved into the ice.
A shrill siren wailed through the canyon, echoing off the frozen walls.
"Ambush!" Kiuga yelled, drawing his short-swords in a single fluid motion.
Lanka’s coastal batteries fired, sending barbed frost harpoons raining toward the fleet, while submerged chains dragged spiked mine clusters toward the hulls.
From the dark depths, three massive Frost-Horned Abyssal Crawlers broke the surface—sixty-foot mutated beasts armored in ice chitin.
"Tagan Vanguard, hunt!" Supreme Mandra Taziraka roared, unleashing the Art of the Beast.
A crimson beast silhouette erupted around the Mandra, taking the shape of a colossal roaring saber-cat.
Time itself seemed to slow as the Mandra vanished in a blur of terrifying speed.
Taziraka vaulted across the water, landing atop the nearest floating ice bastion with an explosive shockwave.
Before the frost guards could turn, his bare claws tore through the iron frame of the heavy ballista, ripping the siege engine apart.
Automated enforcers rushed him with barbed spears, but the Mandra moved with blinding predatory agility.
He ducked a spear thrust, drove a palm strike straight through the leader’s chest plate, and spun to crush another enforcer’s skull.
Behind him, three hundred Tagan warriors swarmed the ice shelves like wolves, their vertical pupils glowing as their claws ripped through Lanka’s defenses.
Using primal echolocative senses, Tagan scouts located the underwater mine chains, diving into the freezing shallows to sever the cables before they touched the hulls.
Beside the flagship, a massive crawler reared back to crush the deck, its maw filled with rows of black teeth.
Suddenly, a mountain-shaking roar blasted across the water as Zaira crested the lead waves.
The colossal titan serpent slammed her armored obsidian and bronze body into the beast.
Zaira coiled her massive tail around its neck, squeezing with enough raw pressure to pulverize solid stone.
The monster’s ice carapace shattered under the titan’s grip, and with one violent whip, Zaira dragged the dead beast into the abyss.
High above, an automated barrage shattered an upper cliff, sending a massive slab of ice collapsing toward the central galleys.
Sagiri stepped to the bow, his face cold and still.
"Nokai," he whispered.
The twenty Silver-Veined Void Blades flared with silver-black light, multiplying into sixty flying blades.
With a sweeping wave of his hand, the blades shot into the sky like a swarm of meteors.
They carved through the falling glacier with effortless precision, reducing the deadly ice sheet into harmless glittering dust.
On the lower deck, Kaka met boarding automata with a roar, his heavy axes cleaving through steel armor and sending shattered pistons flying across the wood.
Beside him, Lady Kiana moved like a silent shadow through the mist, her silver void needles severing the power nodes behind the enemy’s necks.
Every machine she touched collapsed instantly into lifeless cold metal.
Within minutes, the fighting died down, replaced only by the heavy breathing of warriors and the lap of waves against ice.
Supreme Mandra Taziraka leapt back onto the flagship, wiping black grease from his claws as his crimson aura settled.
"Their fangs are brittle," the Mandra grunted, a savage grin on his lips. "They rely on cold iron because their blood is weak."
"This was only their outer watchpost," Sagiri replied, recalling his silver blades into their orbital ring.
As if answering him, the heavy fog ahead was torn apart by a violent arctic wind.
There, rising from the frozen coast like a jagged mountain of black steel and blue ice, stood the fortress of Glacial Lanka.
Massive battlements stretched across the cliffs, guarded by siege towers, while the colossal Great Iron Sea-Gate barred the inner bay.
Sagiri rested his hand on Nokai, feeling the five relics burning hot within his veins.
"The crossing is done," Sagiri said, his voice echoing across the silent armada. "Now, we tear their gates down."
