THE LAST KEEPER
Chapter 428: Frozen Citadel
Freezing ocean spray whipped across the pitch-black waters as a sleek, black-hulled stealth skiff cut silently through the rolling arctic waves.
Sagiri stood at the narrow bow, his dark fur-lined cloak pulled tight against the howling sub-zero gale blowing relentlessly from the northern ice wastes.
Beside him crouched Grand Marshal Senraki and Lady Kiana, their bodies completely concealed beneath specialized thermal-masking cloaks.
Grand Marshal Senraki had traveled north with the southern vanguard, bringing his lifelong mastery of Daziko stealth, covert infiltration, and tactical reconnaissance.
Lady Kiana knelt beside the low gunwale, her slender fingers tracing intricate void patterns in the freezing air to sustain a shimmering dome of silver mist over the vessel.
The silver mist diffused the thermal heat of their bodies and suppressed their spiritual signatures, making the skiff appear on enemy scanners as nothing more than a drifting block of sea ice.
All around them, colossal razor-sharp icebergs drifted like floating white mountains through the dark, tempestuous swells of the Frozen Sea.
Sunken hulls and shattered timber from old trading barques lay frozen inside the ice floes, grim reminders of Lanka’s total naval blockade over the northern waters.
"Keep a sharp watch on the water line," Senraki whispered in a low, measured voice. "King Vanka has deployed submerged acoustic sensor buoys throughout these outer straits."
Ahead through the freezing sea fog, the terrifying silhouette of Glacial Lanka’s coastal stronghold loomed against the jagged black mountain cliffs.
The Glacial Citadel was a colossal fortress carved directly into ancient permafrost, encased in heavy black iron plating and towering five hundred feet above the stormy sea.
Massive industrial smokestacks jutted from the upper battlements, spewing greasy alchemical exhaust and sulfurous steam into the dark polar sky.
"There it is," Senraki murmured, his sharp, dark eyes narrowing as he gazed upon the frozen fortress of King Vanka and General Senraki the Elder.
"King Vanka has spent sixteen long years turning this natural fjord into an impenetrable slaughterhouse," Kiana said softly, her dust-rose eyes scanning the formidable fortifications.
"Look at the upper sea walls," Senraki pointed with a gloved finger toward the iron embrasures carved into the cliff face.
"They have installed twenty heavy automated ice-lance railguns along the ramparts," Senraki explained in a grim tone.
"Those cannons can fire multi-ton frost projectiles with enough force to split our largest transport flagships in two from five leagues away," Senraki added.
Senraki quietly dropped three weighted obsidian tracking beads into the icy water, marking a safe naval corridor through the minefield for the main fleet.
"And the harbor entrance is completely sealed," Sagiri observed quietly, his dual-colored eyes studying the massive barrier spanning the mouth of the bay.
Stretching across the narrow mouth of the fjord was the Great Iron Sea-Gate, a titanic wall of interlocking steel teeth anchored hundreds of feet deep into the ocean bedrock.
Unless the sea-gate was raised from the internal control fortress, no invasion armada could ever sail into the sheltered inner harbor.
Suddenly, a brilliant blue searchlight sweeping from a high watchtower passed directly toward their drifting skiff.
Kiana reacted with instantaneous precision, releasing three fine void needles into the freezing air above their heads.
The needles resonated with her silver bloodline, bending the light beam around their vessel and leaving only the illusion of empty, choppy water.
The blue beacon swept past harmlessly, allowing the trio to glide silently beneath the deep shadow of the sheer glacial cliffs.
Sagiri closed his eyes and touched the wet wood of the hull, extending his refined sensory awareness deep beneath the surface of the freezing sea.
Through the vast, ancient memory of the Archive, Sagiri’s mind penetrated the frigid depths, mapping the ocean floor and the submerged stone foundations of the citadel.
Three hundred feet below the ice shelf, Sagiri detected an immense current of boiling mineral water surging outward into the dark sea.
"I found our infiltration vector," Sagiri said softly, opening his eyes, which glowed with sharp, radiant clarity.
"What lies beneath the ice shelf?" Senraki asked, leaning closer to examine the glowing silver blueprint Sagiri projected between his palms.
"Lanka powers its automated flesh-forges and foundries using deep volcanic steam vents," Sagiri explained, tracing a massive underwater conduit.
"This subterranean thermal exhaust tunnel pumps superheated mineral water directly into the outer bay to prevent the ice from crushing the intake," Sagiri continued.
"The intake grate is large enough for a strike team to swim through," Kiana noted, analyzing the thermal flow. "And it bypasses the surface scanner arrays completely."
"The tunnel leads directly into the lower slave pits and the mechanical winding chambers of the Great Sea-Gate," Sagiri revealed.
Senraki looked up at the highest spire of the glacial citadel, where a solitary green chemical lantern flickered behind reinforced blast glass.
"My father is up there," Senraki said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy whisper that chilled the air more than the polar wind.
"General Senraki believed he could butcher our people, murder Tsaka, and hide behind King Vanka’s iron walls forever," Senraki said, clenching his fists until his leather gloves creaked.
"When we breach the inner citadel, his life is mine to claim," Senraki stated with cold, unyielding finality.
"The blood debt of your clan and the honor of Tsaka will be settled, Grand Marshal," Sagiri assured him quietly, placing a steady hand on the veteran’s shoulder.
"We also need to locate the primary bio-reactor chamber," Kiana cautioned, her voice tightening with suppressed dread.
"I can feel the dark void frequency of Project Lava IX pulsing through the bedrock," Kiana whispered, looking toward the citadel’s subterranean core.
"Sir Black and King Vanka are preparing to activate their alpha bio-weapon," Kiana added. "We must destroy the reactor before they release it upon the world."
"Now that we have mapped their coastal batteries, their sea-gate, and their thermal bypass, we hold every piece of the puzzle," Sagiri said, taking the helm.
With a gentle pulse of void energy channeled through the rudder, Sagiri turned the stealth skiff around, gliding silently away from the towering black walls of the fortress.
They navigated carefully past the drifting icebergs and automated sensor buoys, heading south across the dark expanse of the Frozen Sea.
Ahead on the southern shoreline, the dawn was beginning to break over the grand assembly grounds of the allied continental host.
One hundred thousand warriors, five hundred warships, and hundreds of kinetic barrier cannons were waiting for the Supreme Chief’s return.
Sagiri looked back one last time at the fading silhouette of Glacial Lanka, his heart steady and unyielding like solid stone.
"Assemble the commanders and ready the fleet," Sagiri ordered softly as their skiff approached the southern harbor. "The final invasion begins today."
