THE LAST KEEPER

Chapter 426: BATTLE AND SOUL-LESS MEATGRINDER

  • Next Chapter

The damp autumn earth trembled beneath the synchronized footsteps of forty thousand heavy Soulless automata charging across the open grasslands.

From the forward trenches cut along the Great Highway, the kinetic barrier cannons forged at Molakwa unleashed their first coordinated defensive barrage.

Blinding beams of silver-white disruption energy arced through the gray mist, striking the advancing horde with catastrophic vibrational force.

Where the high-frequency pulses struck, the internal alchemical engines of hundreds of automata instantly shattered, causing entire front ranks to collapse into lifeless heaps of cold iron.

Yet the remaining legions never broke stride, climbing directly over the smoking wreckage of their fallen brethren without a single moment of hesitation.

They surged across the open field with terrifying mechanical velocity, brandishing serrated frost-steel broadswords and heavy alchemical cleavers.

Sagiri landed lightly in the center of the primary trench, his soft leather boots kicking up a spray of damp earth as he took a low combat stance.

Beside him, Grand Zorath Zaka Asakana and his son Kaka stepped forward, their heavy northern warplate gleaming beneath the somber overcast sky.

Kaka slammed his towering iron shield into the trench rim, locking the defensive line while Chief Zaka drew his dual bearded battle-axes with a fierce, guttural war cry.

From the swirling mist behind them, Marshal Salka, Lotaga, and Bekuro materialized with their black shadow daggers drawn, forming an impenetrable diamond formation around the young Keeper.

The heavy vanguard of Lanka crashed into the trench line like an iron tsunami, metal clashing against metal with bone-jarring, brutal violence.

Sagiri slashed Nokai in a swift horizontal arc, the silver-veined blade carving cleanly through the torso of the first charging automaton with effortless ease.

However, as the machine fell in two, the three automata immediately behind it lunged forward simultaneously, their heavy blades thrusting toward Sagiri’s exposed throat and ribs.

In that fleeting fraction of a second, Sagiri experienced the chilling reality of Salka’s tactical warning.

There was no murderous intent to sense, no spike of adrenaline to track, and no mental ripple in the Archive to predict the incoming strike.

The machines moved with cold, mathematical precision, entirely indifferent to their own destruction as long as their weapons found their designated target.

Before the cold blades could reach him, a massive iron wall slammed between Sagiri and the attackers as Kaka drove his tower shield forward with overwhelming strength.

The heavy swords sparked uselessly against Kaka’s reinforced armor, and Kaka countered with a brutal forward bash that crushed the lead machine’s chest plate into twisted scrap.

Simultaneously, Marshal Salka flickered through the shadows at Sagiri’s right flank, his twin black blades executing two lightning-fast reverse cuts.

Salka severed the primary control cables behind the necks of four flanking automata, dropping them to the mud before they could raise their weapons.

Beside Salka, Lotaga and Bekuro moved with fluid lethality, driving their poison-coated stilettos into the hydraulic joints of charging shock troopers.

On the left flank, Chief Zaka fought with the untamed fury of the northern mountains, his heavy axes cleaving through cold-forged alloy limbs in a whirlwind of flying sparks.

"Keep your eyes on their physical momentum, boy!" Salka shouted over the din of battle. "Do not search for a spirit that does not exist!"

Sagiri exhaled a calm, measured breath, completely letting go of his attempt to read the nonexistent minds of the mechanical horde.

Instead, he anchored his perception entirely in physical geometry, spatial awareness, and the pure kinetic reflex honed through years of mortal survival.

Sagiri’s sovereign aura erupted outward in a radiant shockwave of silver and violet energy, cracking the trench walls and forcing dozens of charging machines to stumble under the crushing gravitational weight.

With a fluid flick of his wrists, Sagiri commanded the twenty Silver-Veined Void Blades hovering behind his shoulders into active motion.

The ethereal silver blades darted through the air like a flock of predatory raptors, moving with blinding, unpredictable agility.

Because the void blades phased straight through solid matter, the heavy cold-forged armor of the Soulless offered zero protection against the assault.

The blades sliced effortlessly through internal power conduits, severed hydraulic lines, and shattered core synchronization gems within hundreds of charging automata.

Every swing of Nokai and every arc of the void blades dismantled the automata without encountering resistance, turning the enemy’s charge into a field of falling iron.

Behind the front ranks, three colossal four-armed frost automata leaped into the trench, their massive iron fists descending like falling anvils.

"Take the legs, Kaka!" Sagiri commanded calmly, vaulting directly toward the center titan.

Kaka roared, sweeping his heavy war axe low into the knee joint of the left titan, buckling the multi-ton machine onto the muddy ground.

Marshal Salka and Lotaga vaulted off Kaka’s shield, slicing cleanly through the upper weapon arms of the right titan with their specialized daggers.

Sagiri met the center colossus in mid-air, spinning past its crushing fists with supernatural agility before driving Nokai straight through its primary alchemical reactor.

A brilliant burst of silver void flame consumed the machine from the inside out, completely vaporizing its command core before it hit the earth.

Along the entire defensive perimeter, the remaining Molakwa cannons fired a final concentrated volley into the trailing enemy battalions.

The massive disruption wave swept across the plains, disintegrating the final reserve columns of Lanka’s second vanguard into smoldering scrap metal.

A profound, heavy silence gradually returned to the Central Plains, broken only by the hiss of cooling steam and the crackle of burning alchemical fuel.

Across the vast battlefield, tens of thousands of heavy Soulless automata lay dismantled and motionless across the bloodless mud.

Chief Zaka rested his heavy axes against his knees, breathing deeply as he looked around at the pristine defense line they had held together.

"By the mountain spirits," Zaka said, wiping soot from his brow with a hearty laugh. "I have never seen such terrifying precision in all my years of war."

Kaka wiped clean his war axe, turning to Sagiri with a broad grin. "Nobody gets past our shield wall, brother."

Marshal Salka sheathed his twin shadow blades, stepping up beside Sagiri with a faint, satisfied smirk beneath his dark cowl.

"You adapt fast, Supreme Chief," Salka said, nodding with genuine respect. "That is how a Keeper survives the meatgrinder."

Sagiri sheathed Nokai with a smooth, practiced click, looking out over the cleared highway toward the distant northern horizon.

The Central Plains were firmly secured, the continental alliance was tempered in blood, and the path to the Frozen Sea was finally wide open.

"Rest your warriors and resupply the barrier carriages," Sagiri said, turning to his commanders with calm resolve. "Tomorrow, we march for the coast."
