THE LAST KEEPER

Chapter 425: THE SHADOW CORP ARRIVAL

  • Next Chapter

A cold autumn mist rolled across the vast, undulating expanse of the Central Plains, clinging to the deep trench lines cut along the Great Highway.

On the high northern ramparts of the forward fortress, Sagiri stood silently beneath the gray sky, his dark hair shifting in the chill mountain wind.

Below him, the kinetic barrier cannons forged at Molakwa were positioned every fifty paces along the defense line, their silver-veined barrels aimed at the northern horizon.

Thousands of Molakwa engineers and frontline riflemen patrolled the reinforced trenches, checking power cables and stacking high-frequency disruption rounds beside each carriage.

Far in the distance, a terrifying sight stretched across the open plains: Lanka’s second invasion wave had appeared, a vast, silent ocean of heavy Soulless automata marching in mechanical lockstep.

Unlike ordinary mortal armies, there were no war horns, no beating drums, and no battle cries echoing across the open grass.

The enemy moved in complete, eerie silence, tens of thousands of cold-forged iron frames advancing with relentless, mathematical precision.

A faint rustle of displaced air stirred the mist along the fortress wall, followed by several dark silhouettes materializing from the shadows like living phantoms.

Emerging at the front of the unit was a towering warrior over seven feet tall, clad in sleek, matte-black shadow-weave combat attire.

It was Marshal Salka, his broad shoulders and scarred jaw framed by the dark tactical cowl of the elite Shadow Corp.

Flanking him were veteran instructors Lotaga and Bekuro, their black shadow coats bearing the twin silver daggers of the realm’s premier covert operations division.

"You have certainly moved up in the world, recruit," Salka said, his deep, gravelly voice cutting through the damp chill of the rampart.

Sagiri turned around with a faint smile, resting his right hand lightly upon the polished hilt of Nokai.

"Marshal Salka," Sagiri replied, dipping his head in genuine respect. "I see the Shadow Corp still travels across provinces without making a sound."

Salka stepped forward, his sharp, dark eyes assessing the young Keeper from head to toe before letting out a gruff chuckle.

"The last time I saw you at Galka, you were a skinny boy nursing broken ribs and lying about falling down ramps," Salka noted with rough fondness.

"I still remember hauling you out of the desert sixteen years after the fall of N’folu," Salka added, crossing his massive arms over his chest.

"Now you command seventy thousand spears, unite ancient enemies, and ride a mountain-sized titan serpent into battle," Salka continued with a slow shake of his head.

"A lot has changed since those grueling training days in the lower obstacle arena," Sagiri said softly, looking out at the gathering mist.

"Not everything," Salka grunted, turning his gaze toward the endless black horde marching across the horizon. "War never changes, only the scale of the blood spilled."

Lotaga walked to the edge of the parapet, spitting over the side as he adjusted his twin curved daggers.

"Our reconnaissance teams tracked this vanguard all the way from the northern permafrost," Lotaga reported in a sober tone. "This is King Vanka’s heavy vanguard."

"They are not the frail fodder you faced at Kovura Pass," Bekuro added, checking the black poison vials strapped to his tactical harness.

"Tell me about their combat directives," Sagiri said, his dual-colored eyes narrowing with sharp tactical focus.

Salka leaned against the stone battlements, his expression turning grim as he looked directly at his former student.

"Our scouts captured three of their command units in the foothills," Salka explained, his voice low and serious. "Their minds are completely empty."

"They have no souls, no blood, and no emotional heat for your sensory abilities to read," Salka warned, tapping the side of his own head.

"When a mortal soldier attacks, their muscles tense, their pulse spikes, and their intent radiates outward," Salka continued. "You can read those signals before they strike."

"These automata possess none of that," Salka stressed. "They do not hate you, they do not fear death, and they feel zero pain when their limbs are severed."

"They are pure extermination logic," Sagiri concluded calmly, feeling the true weight of the marshal’s warning settle in the cold air.

"Exactly," Salka said, nodding firmly. "If you try to predict their movements through emotional intent, you will get cut to pieces in the meatgrinder."

"A blade driven by cold gears strikes just as fast whether you read the mind behind it or not," Salka added.

Sagiri looked down at his own hands, recalling the agonizing battles he had fought across Tagayia, the loss of Tsaka, and the blood spilled to unite the five realms.

"We cannot afford to let them break through the Central Plains," Sagiri said quietly. "Behind us lie the undefended civilian towns and the road to N’folu."

Salka placed a massive, heavy hand on Sagiri’s shoulder, his grip steady and unyielding like solid granite.

"You have carried this entire continent on your shoulders for months, boy," Salka said, his voice dropping into a rare tone of quiet pride.

"You brought the North and South together, you broke the sixteen-year feud, and you gave this world a chance to survive," Salka stated.

"But nobody fights a war alone," Salka continued, his dark eyes burning with fierce resolve. "Especially not against an enemy that feels nothing."

"The Shadow Corp did not march across the northern wasteland just to watch you fight from the walls," Salka said, a fierce grin touching his lips.

"Grand Zorath Zaka and Kaka have already formed their heavy shield walls in the central trenches," Salka explained.

"When the horde hits our lines, my shadow units will cover your flanks, disrupt their formations, and sever their command nodes from behind," Salka pledged.

"We will fight shoulder to shoulder, Supreme Chief," Salka said, drawing his twin black shadow blades and holding them in formal salute.

Sagiri met the veteran’s gaze, feeling a surge of calm confidence replace the tension in his chest.

"Let them come then," Sagiri said, his sovereign aura flaring outward in a shimmering halo of violet and radiant silver.

Nokai hummed eagerly against his back, resonating with the twenty Silver-Veined Void Blades hovering in the pocket dimension behind his shoulders.

Down on the plains, the lead ranks of the Soulless legion crossed the five-hundred-yard marker, stepping directly into the pre-sighted kill zone.

Along the entire defensive trench line, the kinetic barrier cannons of Molakwa hummed with blinding silver energy as the gunners locked their targeting levers.

The silence of the Central Plains shattered in an instant as the first line of heavy automata accelerated into a full sprint.

Marshal Salka pulled his dark combat cowl over his face, melting into the shadows of the fortress wall alongside Lotaga and Bekuro.

Sagiri drew Nokai in one fluid motion, the silver-veined blade catching the dying sunlight as he vaulted over the high parapet toward the waiting trenches below.
