THE LAST KEEPER

Chapter 423: SAGIRI AND ZAIRA COMBINED STRIKE

  • Next Chapter

Cold mountain winds howled through the jagged red-rock canyons of Sawaka as colossal Zaira crested the high western ridge.

Below them stretched the vast, rugged labyrinth of the Western Gorges, where dark plumes of greasy alchemical smoke rose from deep crevices in the earth.

Glacial Lanka had not attempted a simple surface assault against the western mountain passes; instead, they had deployed massive mechanical bio-drills to bore deep tunnels straight beneath the mountain defense lines.

Kun Nakia stood waiting on a high granite overhang, her twin curved blades strapped across her back and her leather battle harness coated in thick white rock dust.

"You made good time, Supreme Chief," Nakia said, offering a sharp predator grin as Sagiri stepped down from Zaira’s brow to the edge of the cliff.

"What is the tactical situation below?" Sagiri asked, his dual-colored eyes scanning the dark fissures cutting through the canyon floor.

"Worse than we anticipated," Nakia replied, pointing toward a massive cavern opening at the bottom of the gorge.

"Lanka’s burrowing automata have bored three primary transit tunnels beneath our lines," Nakia explained, her voice tight with suppressed anger.

"Three battalions of our Kafika ridge-hunters were ambushed while scouting the lower shafts," she continued. "They are trapped five hundred feet underground, surrounded by hundreds of Soulless and heavy frost-drillers."

"If those tunnels collapse before we reach them, all five hundred huntresses will be crushed under the mountain," Nakia added grimly.

Sagiri looked down into the abyss, his senses penetrating through the stone to feel the frantic spiritual signatures of the trapped warriors and the cold, mechanical hum of Lanka’s drills.

"They will not die today," Sagiri said calmly, his voice steady as he turned to the colossal titan serpent coiled beside him.

"Zaira, clear us a path straight to the main shaft," Sagiri commanded softly, his tone carrying the absolute authority of a sovereign ruler.

The colossal titan serpent lowered her armored snout and let out a deep, rolling hiss that vibrated through the bedrock beneath their boots.

With a sudden heave of immense muscle, Zaira lunged over the cliff edge, diving headfirst into the gorge like a living battering ram.

Her massive armored scales crashed through the reinforced stone ceiling of the primary bio-tunnel, tearing through iron support beams and shattering tons of rock into powder.

Sagiri and Kun Nakia vaulted off the cliff behind her, descending through the swirling dust and falling debris with supernatural grace before landing lightly upon the subterranean tunnel floor.

Deep inside the underground cavern, the trapped Kafika huntresses were making a desperate final stand behind shattered crystal transport wagons.

Dozens of wounded warriors were huddled in the center of the formation, while their front ranks fought fiercely with curved spears against surging waves of Soulless shock troops.

Towering over the enemy horde were four massive frost-driller automata, their spinning diamond-tipped drill heads grinding against the cavern walls to trigger a catastrophic cave-in.

Before the machines could bring the ceiling down upon the defenders, the side wall of the cavern exploded outward in a shower of boulders as colossal Zaira burst into the chamber.

Her massive tail swept across the cavern floor with seismic force, smashing two of the multi-ton drilling machines into twisted scrap metal against the far wall.

Kun Nakia moved like a flash of bronze lightning, her twin curved blades slicing cleanly through the joints of ten charging Soulless enforcers to relieve the Kafika perimeter.

"Up the ramps!" Nakia roared to her huntresses. "The Supreme Chief has breached the ceiling! Evacuate the wounded to the surface now!"

The Kafika warriors cheered with renewed hope, swiftly carrying their injured sisters toward the massive breach Zaira had carved into the upper gorge.

However, from the deeper southern tunnel, the ground began to tremble as hundreds of heavy Lanka reinforcements surged forward, accompanied by massive alchemical fuel tankers.

The enemy commanders intended to ignite the fuel lines, willing to sacrifice their own automata to incinerate everyone inside the cavern.

Sagiri strode forward into the center of the burning tunnel, his black cloak untouched by the heat as his sovereign aura erupted in a terrifying wave of pressure.

The air inside the underground shaft grew instantly heavy, bending the steel support beams and freezing the charging Soulless automata in their tracks.

With a fluid flick of his wrists, Sagiri unleashed the twenty Silver-Veined Void Blades from the space behind his shoulders.

The twenty blades became streaks of radiant silver-black light, darting through the tunnel with surgical, whistling speed.

They phased straight through the heavy armor of the remaining frost-drillers, slicing the master control conduits and severing the alchemical ignition cables before the enemy could detonate the fuel.

In less than twenty heartbeats, the entire charging reinforcement column was dismantled into motionless heaps of iron and severed wire.

Sagiri walked calmly to the central load-bearing bedrock of the entire subterranean network, where ancient stone pillars supported the weight of the mountain above.

He crouched low, channeling the boundless, indestructible density of the absorbed Living Stone into both of his bare palms.

"Get everyone clear, Nakia!" Sagiri called out over the rumbling stone.

Nakia signaled the final huntress through the upper breach, leaping onto Zaira’s armored neck. "The shafts are clear, Keeper! Bring it down!"

Sagiri drove both of his bare hands directly into the granite floor with earth-shattering force.

A massive shockwave of pure subterranean energy rippled outward through the bedrock, fracturing every support arch and collapsing the foundation of Lanka’s bio-tunnels in an instant.

Thousands of tons of solid rock and granite began to thunder down from the ceiling like a collapsing sky.

Sagiri leaped upward through the falling boulders with effortless agility, landing squarely upon Zaira’s brow as the titan serpent surged out of the crumbling abyss.

Behind them, the entire subterranean network collapsed with a deafening roar that shook the western mountain range, burying Lanka’s bio-tunnels under five hundred feet of solid stone.

On the surface ridge, five hundred rescued Kafika huntresses and ridge-hunters stood in safety beneath the open sky, watching the massive dust cloud settle over the sealed gorge.

Kun Nakia stepped forward and sheathed her curved blades, dropping to one knee before Sagiri with genuine reverence in her fierce amber eyes.

"You saved my warriors and sealed our borders, Keeper," Nakia said, her voice filled with deep gratitude. "The West is yours to command."

Sagiri looked down at the grateful warriors and smiled faintly. "Keep your hunters on the high ridges, Nakia. No enemy will ever breach Sawaka from below again."

He turned Zaira’s massive head toward the east, where the great industrial plains of the Central realm stretched beneath the horizon.

"Next is Molakwa," Sagiri said, feeling the steady, rhythmic pulse of his Silver-Veined blades against his back. "We must ensure Chief Tendai’s kinetic barrier holds."

With a powerful heave of muscle, Zaira surged down the western slopes, carrying the Last Keeper toward the burning foundries of the Central Plains.
