THE LAST KEEPER
Chapter 407: THE OATH OF THE FIVE CLANS
The biting mountain wind swept across the high canyon ridge, howling through the jagged granite needles of the northern border.
Behind them, the deep crater where the Bleeding Gorge once stood smoldered in silent ruin, buried under millions of tons of collapsed stone and ash.
Squad 25 laid Rika down on a folded wool blanket beside Lira’s field litter, the frost crunching beneath their heavy iron boots.
The alchemical corruption had been purged from her blood, but decades of toxic brews and forbidden experiments had taken an irreversible toll on her mortal vessel.
Without dark bio-wards sustaining her heart, her vital channels were gently winding down like an extinguished candle in the breeze.
Sagiri knelt beside the dying elder, his fingers resting gently on her wrist to monitor the slow, fading rhythm of her life pulse.
Kiana knelt on the opposite side, her dust-rose eyes shining with quiet sorrow as she held Rika’s frail, cold hand in both of hers.
Rika opened her eyes, the feverish madness and toxic spite that had consumed her for forty years completely gone from her gaze.
Her vision was clear, gazing into the pale sky with a serenity none of them had ever seen on her face before.
"Do not waste your strength, Sagiri..." Rika murmured, her voice like dry leaves rustling in the autumn wind. "My thread has run its course."
"You are free of the poison, Rika," Sagiri said softly, keeping his voice steady and calm. "You do not have to die in the dark."
A faint, bittersweet smile touched Rika’s pale lips as she looked into the young Keeper’s emerald eyes.
"To die under the open sky... forgiven by the son of Rina... is far more mercy than I ever deserved," she whispered.
She turned her head slightly, her gaze fixing on Kiana with deep, sorrowful reverence.
"Child of the lost dunes..." Rika rasped, her trembling fingers tightening weakly against Kiana’s palm. "Forgive an old fool who forgot that the four clans were meant to be shields, not butchers."
"You gave us the truth, Elder," Kiana answered gently, bowing her head. "Your soul is no longer bound in chains."
Rika drew a slow, shuddering breath, her eyes sharpening with the last surge of her fading consciousness.
"Listen to me... both of you," Rika warned, her voice dropping to a whisper that cut through the whistling wind. "Senraki’s strike will not be a standard border skirmish. He has placed deep-cover sleeper officers inside the Central Command of Alika City."
Ulekai and Kiuga leaned in close, committing every syllable to memory as the cold air bit into their cheeks.
"The coup will happen on the night of the new moon," Rika continued, coughing weakly. "Senraki will claim the Supreme Mandra has fallen to chaos and declare martial law across the provinces. When General Felunka resists... Senraki will slaughter him without hesitation."
"Felunka?" Ulekai asked, his brow furrowing with dark realization. "General Felunka is one of the grand pillars of the Northern Military Council."
"Senraki cares nothing for councils," Rika said, breathing heavily. "He deployed thirty thousand frost-plated Soulless into the subterranean vaults of Glacial Lanka. Sir Black will coordinate their advance through the valleys."
She turned her gaze back to Sagiri, her eyes pleading with raw, desperate sincerity.
"Take the relics, Sagiri..." Rika whispered, her fingers trembling against his wrist. "Do not let the Five Clans remain broken. Unite the South... save the North... tell Rina that I... that I finally understand..."
With that final, gentle breath, Rika’s head tilted slowly to the side, her eyes closing in eternal peace.
The bitter master of forbidden formulas was gone, leaving behind only the quiet silence of the northern snows and the rushing wind.
Sagiri reached out with a steady hand, gently closing her eyelids before pulling the wool blanket up over her chest.
"May the ancestors guide your path across the golden dunes, Rika," Sagiri spoke solemnly, bowing his head in quiet respect.
N’varu stepped forward, placing a weathered hand over his heart in traditional desert salute.
"We will carry her body back to Thazir," the old Sandshade commander said quietly. "She will receive an honorable burial in the sacred sands of the ancestors."
"Thank you, Commander," Sagiri nodded, rising to his feet as the freezing gale whipped his dark coat around his shoulders.
Behind them, Lira propped herself up on her elbows with Kiuga’s assistance, her pale face flushed with quiet determination.
"We heard every word," Lira said softly, her voice gaining strength. "The entire realm is about to burn."
"Then we will be the fire that burns back," Kaka rumbled, planting his twin northern war axes firmly into the frozen dirt.
Kiana stood quietly between Sagiri and Squad 25, her gaze drifting toward her own hands as she stared at her pale palms.
"I fought on their side..." Kiana whispered, her voice laced with lingering pain and heavy regret. "My hands carried out their butchery. How can I stand among warriors of honor?"
"You were a prisoner, Kiana," Sagiri said, turning to face her with unwavering conviction. "You were hidden in the northern examination council, stolen by Senraki, stripped of memories, and bound by dark ink. That was Senraki’s sin, not yours."
"Sagiri is right," Kiuga said, stepping up beside her and resting a warm hand on her shoulder. "You saved Lira’s life. You guided us through the collapsing mountain. You are Sekana, and you are one of us."
"In Squad 25, we don’t care where you were dragged," Ulekai stated gruffly, crossing his arms. "We only care where you stand when steel is drawn."
"And right now, you stand with the squad," Maita added with a grin, tapping his spear against the rock.
Zolinka nodded silently, his keen eyes softening as he adjusted the bowstring of his recurve bow.
Kiana looked at each of their weathered, determined faces, the warmth in her chest swelling until the last cold shadows of the alchemical prison completely faded away.
Sagiri drew his hunting dagger, stepping into the center of the circle formed by the warriors of Squad 25 and the Sandshades.
"Four hundred years ago, the five clans swore an oath under the primordial stars," Sagiri proclaimed, his voice echoing across the canyon rim. "They swore that when the darkness rose to consume the land, the blood of the keepers would bind them as one unbreakable shield."
He drew the edge of the blade across his left palm, letting a drop of rich crimson blood fall onto the flat surface of a granite altar stone.
"I, Sagiri of the N’folu, Last Keeper of the Archive, renew the ancient covenant."
Kiana stepped forward without hesitation, her dust-rose eyes shining with absolute clarity and newfound purpose.
She took the dagger from Sagiri’s hand, drawing a clean line across her own palm and pressing her blood against the stone beside his.
"I, Kiana of the Sekana, scion of the spatial dunes, swear my blade, my needles, and my life to the Keeper and his kin."
Kaka, Ulekai, Kiuga, Maita, Zolinka, and even Lira reached out, pressing their palms together over the stone in a unified ring of blood and iron.
"Squad 25 stands with the Keeper," Kaka roared, his deep voice carrying the unyielding weight of the northern peaks. "To the last breath, to the last broken blade!"
N’varu and the ten Sandshades struck their scimitars against their bronze chestplates in unison, their war chant vibrating through the mountain air.
As their blood mingled on the ancient stone, a warm, golden pulse of light rippled outward from Sagiri’s palm, intertwining with the shimmering silver radiance of Kiana’s spatial resonance.
The ancient bond of the clans, severed for centuries by war and extinction, was reborn on the edge of the abyss.
Before the light could fade, a deep, rhythmic percussion reverberated across the distant northern horizon like the rumbling of thunder.
Sagiri turned his sharp gaze toward the vast expanse of the continental frontier.
Far to the northwest, towering plumes of black smoke were rising into the clouds above the fortified valleys of Tsanka.
Moments later, bright crimson signal beacons ignited one after another along the towering watchtowers of the Central supply corridor.
"The beacons..." Zolinka muttered, his sharp archer’s vision tracking the blazing fires across thirty leagues of mountain ridges. "The Central garrisons are under siege."
"And Galka is burning too," Ulekai pointed out, spotting the faint red glow reflecting against the western cloudline. "Senraki’s legions have mobilized simultaneously across all three border sectors."
The treacherous general had not waited for Sir Black’s confirmation from the Bleeding Gorge.
He had unleashed his vast horde of alchemical Soulless upon the unsuspecting garrisons and civilian settlements of the realm.
Zaira slithered up to the cliff edge, raising her massive horned head into the howling wind and letting out a low, thunderous roar that vibrated in their chests.
Her golden eyes reflected the distant fires of war, sensing the tide of corrupted alchemical bio-energy sweeping across the northern plains.
Sagiri stood tall against the freezing gale, his bedrock aura settling over his frame with unshakable resolve.
"The Bleeding Gorge was only the prelude," Sagiri said, his voice ringing with absolute clarity across the ridge. "Senraki thinks he can tear this continent apart and rule over the ashes."
He turned back to face his squad, Kiana, and the veteran Sandshades.
"We return to Thazir immediately," Sagiri commanded. "We will lay Rika to rest in the sacred dunes, convene the Sovereign Council, and merge the five primordial relics."
"And then?" Kaka asked, a ferocious northern grin spreading across his bearded face as he hefted his axes.
"And then," Sagiri declared, looking out over the burning horizon, "the Southern Host marches north, and we crush Senraki’s rebellion into dust."
With their blood oath sworn and their purpose forged in iron, the warriors turned south, ready to face the storm that would decide the fate of the realm.
