THE LAST KEEPER

Chapter 408: THE COUP IN ALIKA CITY

  • Next Chapter

A freezing northern rain lashed against the obsidian spires and bronze domes of Alika City, drowning the imperial capital in a shroud of gray mist.

At midnight, the great iron bell of the Central Citadel began to toll, its heavy, mournful strikes echoing across the cobblestone avenues.

Torches flickered through the fog as heavily armored regiments marched through the city gates, their iron boots drumming a grim rhythm against the wet stone.

These were not standard imperial city guards on routine patrol.

These were General Senraki’s elite frontier shock troops, clad in dark plate and bearing the sigil of the iron coiled serpent.

Within less than an hour, every communications tower, granary, and imperial armory in the capital had been systematically seized without a single horn blast sounding an alarm.

Sleeper officers within the City Guard had opened the subterranean postern gates, silently disarming loyalist sentries and cutting the throat of anyone who dared question their orders.

In the Great War Plaza before the Convergence Palace, General Felunka arrived at the head of sixty loyalist elite guards, his heavy war-cape soaked with rain.

The veteran general looked upon the courtyard in horror as black banners replaced the golden sun crest of the Supreme Mandra.

Dozens of loyalist palace guards lay face down in pools of rainwater, their hands bound behind their backs with barbed iron wire.

"What is the meaning of this madness?" Felunka roared, his deep voice carrying the thunder of forty campaigns. "Who gave the command to execute imperial sentries in the sovereign capital?"

From the top of the grand marble staircase, heavy iron footsteps descended through the rain.

General Senraki stepped into the torchlight, his broad shoulders draped in a wolf-pelt mantle and his cold, calculating eyes staring down at Felunka.

"I gave the command, Felunka," Senraki said, his voice smooth and devoid of hesitation.

"Senraki?" Felunka’s eyes narrowed as his hand dropped to the hilt of his heavy northern war-saber. "Have you lost your mind? You are mobilizing combat divisions in the imperial sanctuary without the Mandra’s seal!"

"The Mandra is dead, old friend," Senraki replied calmly, pausing halfway down the marble steps. "Taziraka succumbed to his madness in the western mountains. The realm is falling into anarchy, and the South is marching north."

"Dead?" Felunka growled, his jaw tightening. "Supreme Mandra Taziraka does not fall so easily. Where is the official decree from the Council of Elders?"

"There is no time for decrepit elders to debate in comfortable chambers," Senraki declared, snapping his fingers.

Dozens of crossbowmen in black plate stepped onto the surrounding palace ramparts, aiming steel-tipped bolts down at Felunka’s vanguard.

"I have declared martial law across all ten provinces," Senraki stated coldly. "The Northern Military Council is dissolved. Total command of the armed forces now rests in my hands."

Felunka looked past Senraki toward the lower market district, where black smoke was rising despite the pouring rain.

Screams echoed from the merchant quarters as Senraki’s shock troops dragged screaming civilians, junior academy instructors, and cadet candidates into the streets.

"You are burning the artisan quarters..." Felunka whispered in disbelief, his weathered face trembling with rage. "You are executing unarmed citizens!"

"Weakness must be pruned before the winter storm," Senraki said dismissively. "Those who cling to the old order are traitors to the new empire. Submit your command seal, Felunka. Swear fealty to me, and you will retain your rank as my second."

Felunka stared at the man he had fought alongside for three decades, seeing no comrade or general before him, only a treasonous butcher.

"A soldier’s blade exists to shield the weak from monsters," Felunka spoke, his voice vibrating with absolute contempt. "It does not slaughter the people he was sworn to protect."

With a harsh rasp of steel, Felunka drew his massive curved war-saber, the blade glowing with dark azure beast-aura as his vital channels ignited.

"I will never kneel to a dog who sold his soul to Lanka," Felunka declared, stepping forward onto the slick cobblestones.

Senraki’s expression hardened, a cruel sneer curling his thin lips.

"Then die with your useless honor, old fool," Senraki hissed.

Senraki unsheathed his heavy broadsword, a blade forged from dark meteoric iron and pulsing with a corrupted, pitch-black alchemical resonance.

With an explosion of shattered stone, Senraki lunged down the steps, his speed defying his massive frame as he closed the distance in a single heartbeat.

CLANG!

The collision of their heavy blades produced a blinding flash of blue and black sparks that scattered the falling rain like steam.

Felunka met the strike with the unyielding bedrock stance of a veteran warrior, parrying the downward cleave and countering with a sweeping crescent slash toward Senraki’s neck.

Senraki twisted his torso with predatory grace, slipping beneath the azure arc and driving the heavy pommel of his broadsword violently into Felunka’s ribs.

The bone-crushing impact cracked Felunka’s breastplate, forcing the older general back three paces through the muddy water.

"Is that all forty years of battlefield service taught you?" Senraki mocked, surging forward with a relentless barrage of heavy slashes.

Felunka gritted his teeth against the searing pain in his side, deflecting three consecutive strikes with masterful precision, his war-saber whistling through the air.

Yet with every clash, the black alchemical corruption radiating from Senraki’s blade seeped into Felunka’s weapon, dulling his vital flow and numbing his forearms.

Senraki feinted high toward Felunka’s eyes, suddenly pivoting on his heel to drive a devastating knee strike into Felunka’s exposed midsection.

The blow knocked the breath from Felunka’s lungs, staggering him backward.

Before Felunka could reset his footing, Senraki’s dark broadsword flashed in a brutal, upward diagonal strike.

The meteoric iron shattered Felunka’s war-saber into jagged shards, cleaving through the hardened steel of his cuirass and opening a deep, fatal wound across his chest.

Felunka collapsed onto one knee in the blood-stained puddle, his shattered blade slipping from his trembling, bloodied fingers.

He coughed up a heavy surge of crimson onto the wet stone, clutching his torn chest as his life pulse rapidly drained away.

Senraki stepped over the shattered fragments of the war-saber, resting the bloodied tip of his dark blade against Felunka’s throat.

"You should have bent the knee, Felunka," Senraki whispered coldly. "The age of honor is dead."

Felunka lifted his head, his fading eyes burning with unyielding defiance as he stared straight into the traitor’s face.

"You may take... this city in the dark, Senraki..." Felunka wheezed, blood spilling past his teeth. "But Taziraka lives... The Mandra’s wrath will hunt you to the ends of the earth... and the Last Keeper will bury you in the ash of your own making."

Senraki’s gaze darkened with cold annoyance.

Without another word, he thrust his blade forward, extinguishing the last breath of the veteran general.

Felunka’s body fell forward onto the rain-drenched cobblestones of the Great War Plaza, silent and still. ℯℯ𝑙.

Senraki reached down, coldly wrenching the golden command seal of the Northern Grand Armies from Felunka’s bloodied belt.

He held the dripping seal high above his head, turning to face his waiting officers and the surrounding legions.

"General Felunka has fallen defending the false Mandra!" Senraki shouted into the howling rain. "The Northern Armies belong to me!"

The rebel legions raised their spears and war axes into the stormy sky, letting out a savage, unified roar that drowned the thunder.

"Lock down every gate!" Senraki commanded, his voice cold as winter ice. "Purge the loyalist garrisons, arrest the academy elders, and prepare the northern rail lines. Lanka’s vanguard arrives at dawn."

The golden capital of Tagayia had fallen into darkness, and the fires of rebellion now burned at the heart of the realm.
