THE LAST KEEPER

Chapter 406: RIKA’S TRUTH

  • Next Chapter

Subterranean tremors surged through the granite floor of the Bleeding Gorge, rattling the loose iron chains pinned against the cliffside.

Sagiri stepped away from Lira’s field litter, his boots crunching over pulverized gravel as he approached the bound figure of Rika.

The former alchemical master hung limply within her suppression bindings, her skin mottled with dark veins and her breathing shallow and ragged.

Decades of forbidden organ harvesting had begun to backfire, decaying her vital channels as the facility’s containment wards broke.

Kiana followed silently beside Sagiri, her dust-rose eyes solemn as three silver void needles floated in a gentle orbit around her fingertips.

"Why are you standing there, boy?" Rika rasped, coughing dark blood onto the stone. "Finish it. I ordered your squad dissected. I gave Sir Black the formulas."

Sagiri knelt before her, his expression carrying the calm, unyielding gravity of the Last Keeper.

"The dead don’t speak, Rika," Sagiri said softly. "And the living still owe a debt to the truth."

He placed his right palm against her chest, channeling a pulse of soothing warmth from the Archive into her failing heart.

Golden vitality permeated her chest cavity, burning away the necrotic bile clogging her main vascular conduits.

Kiana stepped forward and drove three silver void needles into Rika’s collarbone with surgical precision.

The silver needles acted as spatial anchors, isolating corruption and drawing festering sludge out through the puncture points in thin, smoking threads.

Rika gasped violently as warmth returned to her numb limbs, her eyes widening in shock as the agonizing pressure on her lungs dissolved.

"You... you are purifying my vital pathways?" Rika whispered, trembling as she stared into Sagiri’s emerald eyes. "After everything I did to Rina... to your family?"

"My mother carried no hatred for you, Rika," Sagiri said, maintaining the steady flow of life pulse into her core. "She only pitied the darkness you chose."

Those words struck Rika harder than any war hammer, shattering the bitter shell of resentment she had carried for forty years.

Her shoulders trembled, and the venomous sneer that had defined her face collapsed into raw weeping.

"I hated her..." Rika sobbed, tears cutting pale trails through the soot on her cheeks. "For forty years, I hated Rina. We studied the scrolls together. I was the sharper mind, the master of formulas."

She bowed her head against the cold iron of her chains.

"Yet when the time came, the Archive rejected me," she choked out in despair. "The ancestral consciousness didn’t care about my intellect or my ambition. It chose her warmth. It chose her purity."

Sagiri listened in silence, his golden energy knitting the torn fibers around her heart.

"I spent my life trying to prove the Archive made a mistake," Rika wept. "I allied with butchers. I sold my soul to Sir Black and Senraki to surpass the Keeper’s legacy."

Kiana withdrew two needles, checking the color of Rika’s blood as it turned from blackened sludge back to crimson.

"And look at where it led me," Rika whispered, gazing at her withered hands. "Chained in a ditch, saved by the boy whose birthright I tried to steal. What a fool I am."

"Regret won’t undo your crimes, Rika," Sagiri stated firmly. "Tell us what Senraki is planning. Tell us before this mountain buries us all."

Rika lifted her tear-streaked face, her bloodshot eyes filled with desperate urgency.

"The Bleeding Gorge is only the nursery, Sagiri," Rika warned, her voice trembling with terror. "Sir Black wasn’t acting alone. He is the master architect for General Senraki’s grand rebellion."

Ulekai and Kiuga stepped closer, their expressions hardening as they listened to the captive’s confession.

"Senraki formed a secret pact with King Vanka of Glacial Lanka," Rika continued rapidly. "For six years, they smuggled thousands of captives through subterranean tunnels into Lanka’s deep labs."

"To manufacture more Soulless?" Ulekai demanded, his hand tightening on his dagger.

"An entire vanguard of Apex warriors," Rika rasped. "Enhanced with Lanka’s frost-alloy plating and alchemical void seals. Tens of thousands of them."

She turned her gaze directly toward Sagiri, her pupils dilated with fear.

"The invasion has begun," Rika confessed. "Senraki’s rebel legions are moving on Tsanka and the Central supply corridors. Within days, his coalition will strike Alika City to execute a bloody coup and assassinate Supreme Mandra Felunka."

Before Sagiri could press further, a deafening explosion ripped through the deep bedrock beneath their boots.

The entire gorge rocked violently, hurling loose boulders from the canyon rim down into the smoke-filled valley.

A piercing mechanical siren wailed from the ventilation shafts, accompanied by jets of violet flame erupting from the drainage conduits.

"The containment core!" Kiuga shouted, bracing against a rock wall as the earth bucked under him.

"Sir Black..." Rika choked out, coughing as sulfurous fumes filled the air. "He realized the Apex project failed. He triggered the facility’s geothermal self-destruct mechanism!"

High above the lower forge terrace, an armored blast hatch ground open on the northern mountain face.

Through drifting ash, Sagiri caught sight of a sleek, heavy-plated rail car shooting out of the lower docking bay.

The rail car rode on magnetic-alchemical tracks, accelerating at terrifying speed into a reinforced deep-mountain transit tunnel heading straight toward Glacial Lanka.

Through the rear glass, a tall figure in a black coat stared through the smoke before the heavy blast doors slammed shut.

"Sir Black is fleeing north!" Maita yelled, pointing his spear toward the sealed transit tunnel.

"Forget him!" Ulekai barked, dodging a falling slab of granite that shattered where he had stood. "The whole mountain is collapsing inward! We need an exit now!"

Massive fissures split the floor of the Bleeding Gorge, vomiting geysers of molten alchemical slag and toxic gas into the sky.

The main extraction ramp Squad 25 had used to enter the valley was crushed under falling cliff face, completely sealing the southern route.

"We are boxed in!" Kaka roared, hoisting Lira’s stretcher onto his broad shoulders while shielding her with his massive war axe. "The canyon walls are coming down!"

N’varu and his ten Sandshades drew their scimitars, forming a protective circle around the wounded as falling stone threatened to bury them alive.

Zaira hissed loudly, coiling her massive golden-scaled body into a protective dome over the squad, heavy stones bouncing harmlessly off her armored hide.

Yet even the titan serpent could not withstand the impending geothermal implosion of an entire mountain range.

"There is a way," Kiana spoke, her voice calm and clear amidst the roaring chaos.

She stepped to the front of the formation, her delicate hands tracing glowing silver arcs through the dust-filled air.

Her dust-rose eyes shone with ancestral radiance as she tapped into the lost spatial heritage of the extinct Sekana clan.

"The mountain is full of ancient thermal vents and spatial folds," Kiana said, pointing toward a narrow fissure behind the eastern cliff face. "The ink keepers used them centuries ago to travel between sanctuaries."

"That fissure is barely wide enough for a goat!" Zolinka shouted over the roar of falling boulders.

"Trust her!" Sagiri commanded without hesitation. "Squad 25, move on Kiana’s lead! N’varu, bring up the rear!"

Kiana sprinted toward the narrow fissure, flicking four silver void needles into the rock aperture.

The moment the silver needles struck the stone, a pulse of shimmering spatial energy expanded the fissure, unraveling the dense granite into a stable, illuminated passage.

"Move! Now!" Kiana called out, ushering the squad through the expanding rift.

Kaka surged forward, carrying Lira with steady strides, while Kiuga and Ulekai supported the weakened Rika between them.

Maita and Zolinka flanked the stretcher, their weapons knocking aside falling rocks as they plunged into the subterranean corridor.

Sagiri held the rearguard alongside N’varu and the Sandshades, his hands engulfed in golden bedrock aura as he slammed both palms into the cavern roof.

A massive wall of earth and golden energy rose behind them, bracing the ceiling and blocking waves of roaring alchemical flame from engulfing their heels.

Zaira compressed her colossal frame, gliding smoothly through the widened stone corridor like a river of liquid gold, her heat warding off choking dust.

Deep inside the passage, the mountain’s structural failure reached its violent climax.

The bedrock groaned like a dying beast as secondary explosions tore through the deep alchemical reservoirs below, sending shockwaves that rattled the teeth in their skulls.

Kiana ran at the head of the column, her silver needles darting forward like scouting birds, detecting structural fault lines and shifting spatial currents before cave-ins could crush them.

"Ahead! The thermal chimney!" Kiana yelled, leaping over a widening chasm glowing with molten red lava.

Upward through the dark, a spiraling natural rock stair wrapped around an ancient volcanic chimney, leading toward the upper mountain rim.

"Climb! Don’t look down!" Ulekai shouted, his voice hoarse from sulfur smoke.

The warriors pushed their burning muscles, bounding up the spiral stair three steps at a time.

Behind them, the lower tunnels collapsed into nothingness, swallowed by fire and crushing stone.

With one final surge of speed, Kiana shattered the upper rock seal at the chimney’s peak with a barrage of silver needles.

Blinding daylight and crisp, freezing northern air flooded their senses as the entire group burst out onto the high canyon rim.

Zaira surged out behind them, whipping her massive tail around the ledge to pull the last two Sandshades safely onto solid ground.

Sagiri was the last to leap clear, landing firmly beside Kiana as the entire eastern face of the Bleeding Gorge gave way behind them.

With a cataclysmic roar that shook the sky, the mountain imploded inward, collapsing into an immense, smoking crater of shattered rock, fire, and billowing black soot.

The toxic empire of Sir Black’s bio-forge was completely erased from the earth.

Breathing heavily, the warriors collapsed onto the snow-covered ridge, watching the towering plume of ash rise into the northern sky.

They had survived the crucible of the Bleeding Gorge, but the dark war for the continent was only just beginning.
