The last DragonHeart
Chapter 44: The Emberwyrm's Secret
The Inferno Realm was a world of fire and shadow, where rivers of lava flowed through valleys of obsidian and the sky burned with eternal crimson. James had visited this realm before, but it felt different now—darker, more dangerous, as if something ancient and powerful had awakened beneath its surface.
The Emberwyrms had returned.
James stood at the edge of the Inferno Capital, his allies gathered around him. The city was in chaos—buildings smoldered, citizens fled in terror, and the air was thick with the smell of smoke and ash.
"I've never seen anything like this," Kael said, his mismatched eyes wide with fear. "The Emberwyrms we faced before—they were nothing compared to this. This is... this is an invasion."
The Inferno King appeared beside them, his flame-wreathed form flickering with barely contained rage. "They came three days ago. Four of them. Massive beasts that breathed fire and shadow. They've been destroying everything in their path."
James's jaw tightened. "Where are the Dragonheart descendants?"
The Inferno King's eyes blazed. "They're being held in the Emberwyrm's lair—a cavern beneath the Inferno Mountains. The Emberwyrms are using them as a power source, draining their fire to strengthen themselves."
James's blood ran cold. "Then we get them out. Now."

The Journey to the Lair
The journey to the Emberwyrm's lair was treacherous.
James led his allies through the Inferno Mountains, their footsteps echoing against the scorched rock. The heat was intense, oppressive, suffocating. Rivers of lava flowed around them, and the air was thick with smoke and ash.
Kael's green healing energy pulsed, shielding them from the worst of the heat. "I hate this. I hate everything about this. Why do we always have to go to the most terrifying places?"
Serena's ice blazed, creating a barrier of cool air around them. "Because that's where the people who need us are."
Rourke's massive form shifted, his stone-like skin protecting him from the heat. "We're close. I can feel the Emberwyrms' presence."
Lysandra moved through the shadows, her dark eyes scanning the cavern ahead. "There's a chamber just beyond this ridge. That's where they're holding the Dragonhearts."
James nodded, his voice steady. "Then let's move."
---
The Emberwyrm's Lair
The chamber was vast and dark, its walls pulsing with ancient energy. At its center stood four young Dragonhearts, their bodies bound with chains of fire and shadow. Their eyes were wide with terror, but there was a spark of defiance in them that made James's heart ache.
And coiled around them, its massive body blocking the entrance, was the largest Emberwyrm James had ever seen. Its scales gleamed like molten gold, its eyes burned with ancient fury, and its roar shook the very walls.
"James Ironheart," the Emberwyrm rumbled, its voice like grinding stone. "I've been expecting you."
James stepped forward, his body aching, his voice steady. "You know who I am?"
The Emberwyrm's eyes blazed. "I know everything about you, Dragonheart. I know your parents. I know your Legacy. And I know that you gave up your power to seal the Void."
James met its gaze without flinching. "Then you know that I'll do whatever it takes to protect these people."
The Emberwyrm laughed—a harsh, rumbling sound that shook the walls. "You can't protect them, Dragonheart. You have no power. No fire. You're nothing but a mortal man."
James's fists clenched. "Maybe. But I have something more important than power. I have hope. I have courage. And I have the loyalty of the Seven Realms."
The Emberwyrm's eyes narrowed. "You think hope can defeat me? You think courage can stop me?"
James smiled—a fierce, determined smile. "No. But they can inspire the people who can."
He turned to the young Dragonhearts, his voice steady and calm. "You have power—power that you've never been able to control. But I believe in you. All of you. You're stronger than you know. And together, we can defeat this creature."
The young Dragonhearts looked at each other, their eyes flickering with uncertainty. Then, slowly, they nodded.
The golden fire blazed to life—not just in one of them, but in all four. The chains shattered, and the light exploded outward, consuming the Emberwyrm's shadow energy.
"NO!" the Emberwyrm roared. "THIS ISN'T POSSIBLE!"
But the golden fire didn't consume the Emberwyrm. It surrounded it, wrapping around its massive form like a warm embrace.
James stepped forward, his voice echoing through the chamber. "Stop! All of you!"
The Dragonhearts froze, their golden fire flickering uncertainly.
James turned to the Emberwyrm, his voice steady and calm. "You're not evil. You never were. You're ancient, powerful, and misunderstood. You were created to protect the realms, not destroy them. Remember who you are. Remember what you were made to be."
The Emberwyrm's eyes flickered with something ancient and forgotten—memory, perhaps, or recognition.
James pressed forward. "The Void's emergence disturbed your slumber. You were confused, scared, lashing out at anything that threatened you. But the Void is sealed. The threat is gone. It's time to return to your true purpose."
The Emberwyrm was silent for a long moment. Then, slowly, it lowered its head.
"I remember," it rumbled, its voice soft and ancient. "I remember who I was. What I was made to be."
James smiled—a warm, genuine expression. "Then help us. Help us protect the realms. Help us protect the Dragonhearts."
The Emberwyrm raised its head, its eyes blazing with new purpose. "I will. I swear it."

The Return
They returned to Ashford four days later, the four Dragonhearts in tow.
James led them through the city streets, showing them the peace and prosperity that the Seven Realms had achieved. The young people's eyes were wide with wonder, their fear slowly replaced by hope.
"This is incredible," one of them breathed. "I never imagined the realms could be like this."
James nodded. "It took a lot of work. A lot of sacrifices. But it was worth it."
Kael appeared beside them, his mismatched eyes warm. "And you're part of it now. Welcome to the family."
The Emberwyrm appeared in the sky, its massive form silhouetted against the sun. Its roar echoed across the city, but it wasn't a roar of fury. It was a roar of triumph.
James looked up, his heart filled with hope.
"We've found the Dragonhearts," he said. "And we've found an ally. The Emberwyrms will protect the realms, not destroy them."
Kael grinned. "I never thought I'd say this, but I'm glad we have a dragon on our side."
James laughed. "Me too."
