The last DragonHeart

Chapter 45: The Elder Dragonheart

  • Next Chapter

The message from the Aetherwilds arrived at dawn, delivered by a messenger clad in robes of silver and gold.

James stood on the balcony of the Ashford palace, reading the letter with trembling hands. The words were written in elegant script, ancient and powerful, and they carried a weight that made his heart race with anticipation.

"James Ironheart,

I have been watching you since the moment you broke your seal. I have seen your triumphs and your struggles, your victories and your sacrifices. You have done what no Dragonheart has done in a thousand years—you have united the Seven Realms, defeated the Celestial Council, and sealed the Void. But your journey is not yet complete.

I am the Elder Dragonheart. I am the first of our bloodline, the one who created the Legacy and sealed it within your parents' bloodline. I have been sleeping for centuries, waiting for the right moment to awaken. That moment is now.

Come to the Dragon's Rest. I will reveal the true purpose of our bloodline. I will show you what it means to be a Dragonheart.

— The Elder Dragonheart"

James read the letter three times, his hands shaking. The Elder Dragonheart. The first of their bloodline. The one who had created the Legacy itself.

Kael appeared beside him, his mismatched eyes wide with curiosity. "What does it say? Is it good news? Bad news? Neutral news? I need to know!"

James handed him the letter, his voice barely a whisper. "The Elder Dragonheart has awakened. He wants to meet me."

Kael read the letter, his eyes widening with each word. "The Elder Dragonheart? The first one? The one who started it all? That's... that's incredible! That's amazing! That's—"

"That's terrifying," James interrupted, his voice shaking. "What if I'm not ready? What if I disappoint him?"

Kael grabbed his shoulders, his mismatched eyes blazing with intensity. "You won't disappoint him. You've never disappointed anyone. You're the Last Dragonheart, James. You're the one who united the realms. You're the one who saved us all. You're ready for this."

James took a deep breath, the warmth in his chest spreading through him like a gentle fire. "Then I'll go. I'll face him. I'll learn what he has to teach me."

Kael grinned. "And I'll be right there with you. Always."

The Journey to the Dragon's Rest

The journey to the Dragon's Rest took three days.

James traveled through the Aetherwilds, his allies at his side. The landscape was just as he remembered it—floating islands, rivers of liquid light, and creatures of pure energy that watched him with ancient, knowing eyes.

But something was different this time. The air was charged with anticipation, the golden grass of the valley pulsing with a warmth that made his heart race.

Kael walked beside him, his green healing energy pulsing with excitement. "I can't believe we're going to meet the Elder Dragonheart. The first one. The one who started it all. This is like meeting a legend. A living legend!"

Serena's ice-blue eyes scanned the horizon. "I've read about the Elder Dragonheart in ancient texts. He was said to be the most powerful cultivator in history. His power was so great that he could reshape reality itself."

Rourke's massive form shifted. "And he's been sleeping for centuries?"

Lysandra nodded slowly. "The Aetherwilds is a place of eternal slumber. Many ancient beings have slept here, waiting for the right moment to awaken."

James stepped into the valley, the golden grass swaying gently around him. The altar at its center was pulsing with golden light, and the air was thick with power.

"Elder Dragonheart," James called, his voice echoing across the valley. "I'm here. I've come to meet you."

The golden light blazed brighter, and a figure emerged from the altar. He was tall and ancient, his skin like burnished gold, his eyes like twin suns. His robes were simple but elegant, woven from threads of pure light.

"James Ironheart," the Elder Dragonheart said, his voice echoing with ancient power. "I've been waiting for you."

The Elder's Revelation

James stepped forward, his heart pounding. "You're the first Dragonheart. The one who created the Legacy."

The Elder Dragonheart nodded slowly. "I am. And I've been watching you, James. I've seen your journey, your struggles, your sacrifices. You've done what no Dragonheart has done in a thousand years. You've united the Seven Realms. You've defeated the Celestial Council. You've sealed the Void."

James's voice trembled. "But I gave up the Legacy. I gave up my power. I'm Grade Zero now."

The Elder Dragonheart smiled—a warm, ancient expression. "You gave up the Legacy to save the realms. That is the truest expression of the Dragonheart spirit. Power is not what defines us, James. It's what we do with that power—and what we're willing to sacrifice for others."

James felt tears prick at his eyes. "Then what is the true purpose of our bloodline? Why were the Dragonhearts created?"

The Elder Dragonheart's eyes blazed with ancient fire. "We were created to protect the realms from the Void. The Void is not just a realm of chaos—it's a living entity, a force of destruction that seeks to consume everything. The Dragonhearts were created to stand against it, to seal it away, to protect the realms from its hunger."

James's blood ran cold. "But I sealed the Void. I gave up my power to do it."

The Elder Dragonheart shook his head slowly. "You sealed a rift, James. You weakened the Void. But you didn't destroy it. The Void is eternal. It will always return. And when it does, the Dragonhearts will need to be ready."

James's fists clenched. "Then what do I do? How do I prepare for something that can't be destroyed?"

The Elder Dragonheart placed a hand on his shoulder, his ancient eyes filled with wisdom. "You train the next generation. You teach them to control their power, to understand their purpose, to stand together against the darkness. You build a legacy that will outlast you, a legacy of hope and courage and unity."

James looked at his allies—Kael, Serena, Rourke, Lysandra, and all the young Dragonhearts who had joined their cause. His family.

"Then I'll do it," he said, his voice steady. "I'll train them. I'll prepare them. I'll make sure the Dragonheart legacy lives on."

The Elder Dragonheart smiled—a warm, genuine expression. "I knew you would. That's why I awakened. That's why I called you here."

The Training Begins

The next morning, James stood before the gathered Dragonhearts.

Lyra, Elara, Kaelen, Seraphina, Valeriana, Darius, Liana, Theron, and Sera—nine young men and women who carried the Dragonheart bloodline in their veins. They looked at him with a mixture of hope and uncertainty, their golden fire flickering nervously.

"I know you're scared," James began, his voice steady. "I know you're uncertain. I was too, when I first discovered my power. But I learned something that I want to share with you. Power is not what defines us. What defines us is what we do with that power—and what we're willing to sacrifice for others."

The young Dragonhearts listened, their eyes fixed on him.

"I'm not going to teach you how to fight," James continued. "I'm going to teach you how to lead. How to inspire. How to build a world worth protecting. Because that's what it truly means to be a Dragonheart."

Lyra stepped forward, her golden fire blazing. "I'm ready. I want to learn."

Elara nodded. "Me too."

The others echoed her words, their voices rising in a chorus of determination.

James smiled—a fierce, determined smile. "Then let's get to work."
