The last DragonHeart
Chapter 43: The Celestial Fortress
The Aetherwilds had changed.
James stood at the edge of the floating islands, staring at the massive fortress that loomed in the distance. It was a structure of black stone and dark energy, its spires reaching toward the swirling sky like grasping fingers. Pulses of crimson light rippled across its surface, and the air around it crackled with malevolent power.
"I don't remember this being here," Kael said, his mismatched eyes wide with unease. "That's new. That's very new. And very terrifying."
Sage stepped forward, her scarred face grim. "The Celestial remnants built it after the Council's fall. It's a fortress designed to withstand any attack. They've been hiding here, biding their time, waiting for the right moment to strike."
James's jaw tightened. "And now they have three Dragonheart descendants inside. We need to get them out."
Serena's ice-blue eyes scanned the fortress. "It's heavily guarded. I can sense at least a hundred Celestial soldiers inside. And there's something else—something darker."
Rourke's massive form shifted. "What kind of something?"
Serena shook her head slowly. "I don't know. But it's powerful. Ancient. Like the Void."
Lysandra's dark eyes gleamed. "Then we go in quietly. We find the Dragonhearts. We get them out. And we leave before whatever that is wakes up."
James nodded, his voice steady. "Then let's move."

The Infiltration
They entered the fortress through a hidden passage—a crack in the wall that Lysandra had discovered during her reconnaissance. The tunnel was narrow and dark, its walls slick with moisture. The air was thick with the smell of decay and dark magic.
Kael shivered. "I hate this. I hate everything about this. This is worse than the Shadow Realm. Way worse."
Lysandra silenced him with a look. "Stay quiet. The guards are everywhere."
They moved through the darkness, their footsteps silent. James led the way, his body aching with the effort. Without the golden fire, he was vulnerable in ways he'd never been before. But he refused to let that stop him.
They reached the fortress's inner chambers, and James saw the Dragonhearts for the first time.
They were three young people—two women and one man—their bodies bound with enchanted chains that pulsed with dark energy. Their eyes were wide with terror, but there was a spark of defiance in them that made James's heart ache.
"Who are you?" one of them demanded, her voice trembling. "Are you here to hurt us?"
James stepped forward, his hands raised. "No. I'm here to help you. My name is James Ironheart. I'm the Last Dragonheart."
The young man's eyes widened with recognition. "The Last Dragonheart? You're the one who defeated the Celestial Council?"
James nodded. "I am. And I'm here to get you out of this place."
Before they could respond, a cold voice echoed through the chamber.
"James Ironheart. I was wondering when you'd come."
A figure stepped from the shadows—a tall, gaunt woman with skin like polished obsidian and eyes that burned with dark fire. Her body was wreathed in shadows, and her smile was sharp as a blade.
"I am Archon Vexis's successor," she said, her voice like silk wrapped around a blade. "You may call me Lady Malachar. And I've been waiting for you, Dragonheart."
James's blood ran cold. "You're the one who's been hunting the Dragonhearts."
Lady Malachar's smile widened. "Hunting them? No, dear boy. I've been collecting them. Their power is precious—a resource that the Celestial Council wasted. But I won't make the same mistake."
She raised her hand, and shadow energy exploded from her body. The walls of the chamber began to tremble, and the ground shook beneath their feet.
"I'm going to drain their power," Lady Malachar continued, her voice dripping with malice. "I'm going to use it to resurrect the Celestial Council. And then, I'm going to destroy everything you've built."
James's fists clenched. "You're insane. The Council is gone. The Void is sealed. You can't bring them back."
Lady Malachar laughed—cold, hollow, mocking. "You think the Void is sealed? You think the Council is gone? You have no idea what's coming, Dragonheart. No idea at all."

The Battle
The chamber erupted into chaos.
Serena's ice blazed, freezing the shadow energy that surged toward them. Rourke's massive fists slammed into the walls, creating barriers of stone that protected them from the onslaught. Lysandra moved through the shadows, her dagger aimed at Lady Malachar's heart.
But Lady Malachar was powerful—far more powerful than James had anticipated. She deflected Lysandra's attack with a wave of shadow, sending her crashing into the wall.
"Fools!" Lady Malachar shouted. "You can't defeat me! I've been preparing for this moment for years!"
James looked at the young Dragonhearts, their eyes wide with terror. He couldn't fight. He couldn't protect anyone. He was Grade Zero. Useless.
But then he remembered something—something that Elara Shadowvale had told him.
The Dragonheart Legacy was never truly destroyed. It was merely waiting for the right moment to return.
James closed his eyes, reaching deep within himself. He felt nothing—no golden fire, no warmth, no power. Just emptiness.
But then he heard a voice—soft, familiar, warm.
James.
It was his mother's voice.
You're not powerless. The Legacy lives on in you. In your heart. Your courage. Your love. That's what really matters.
James opened his eyes, his gaze steady. "I may not have power anymore. But I have something more important."
He stepped forward, his voice cutting through the chaos. "I have hope. I have courage. I have the loyalty of the Seven Realms. And I have the unshakeable belief that right will prevail."
Lady Malachar's eyes narrowed. "Pretty words, Dragonheart. But words won't save you."
James smiled—a fierce, determined smile. "No. But they'll inspire the people who can."
He turned to the young Dragonhearts, his voice steady and calm. "You have power—power that you've never been able to control. But I believe in you. All of you. You're stronger than you know. And together, we can defeat her."
The young Dragonhearts looked at each other, their eyes flickering with uncertainty. Then, slowly, they nodded.
The golden fire blazed to life—not just in one of them, but in all three. The chains shattered, and the light exploded outward, consuming Lady Malachar's shadow energy.
"NO!" Lady Malachar screamed. "THIS ISN'T POSSIBLE!"
The golden fire engulfed her, her form dissolving into fragments of light.
James stood at the center of the chaos, his body aching, his breath ragged. But he was alive. His allies were alive. And the Dragonhearts were free.

The Return
They returned to Ashford three days later, the three Dragonhearts in tow.
James led them through the city streets, showing them the peace and prosperity that the Seven Realms had achieved. The young people's eyes were wide with wonder, their fear slowly replaced by hope.
"This is incredible," the young man breathed. "I never imagined the realms could be like this."
James nodded. "It took a lot of work. A lot of sacrifices. But it was worth it."
Kael appeared beside them, his mismatched eyes warm. "And you're part of it now. Welcome to the family."
One of the young women smiled—a genuine, heartfelt expression. "Thank you. All of you."
James placed a hand on her shoulder. "What are your names?"
The young man stepped forward. "I'm Kaelen. Named after my grandfather. He was a healer, like Kael."
One of the young women stepped forward. "I'm Seraphina. My mother was a Sky Realm warrior."
The other young woman stepped forward. "I'm Valeriana. My father was a Storm Realm general."
James smiled—a fierce, determined smile. "Then let's get to work."
