Chapter 164: Chapter 164 The Alpha fight 2
Talia’s POV
(Readers discretion are advised)
The sounds of the battle around me faded; the healers, the wounded, and the flames, it all became background noise.
The only thing that mattered was the two wolves in the center of the courtyard. And the only thing I could see was something gleaming on Viktor’s claws.
At first, I thought it was just the firelight from the part of the field, where the flaming boulders had set trees on fire, that was reflecting off them. But then I looked closer, because the gleam was too bright, and too sharp, and I knew immediately that it was not natural.
Viktor’s claws were glinting. There was a strange, silver light reflecting off them, and catching the light. It was small, and almost not noticeable, like he was trying to hide it, but it was there.
I froze, and my blood ran cold.
Viktor had coated his claws in silver.
Kaelen did not see it at first, because he lunged forward, aiming for Viktor’s throat. But Viktor was ready. He sidestepped Kaelen and swung his claws at the right moment, in a wide arc.
The silver claws raked across Kaelen’s chest, and I saw the sparks fly, as Kaelen howled, and cried out in pain.
The howl echoed across the battlefield.
It was a sound of agony, that was raw and broken. I heard gasps from the crowd, and I heard someone scream. I wanted to believe it was not Kaelen, that I had imagined it, but I knew the truth.
The silver was destroying him from the inside, and his skin was burning alive in front of us.
I saw the skin split open, and I saw the smoke rising from the wound, as the silver was burning him from the inside out.
I felt my heart shatter instantly.
The sound was sickening. Kaelen stumbled back, and a deeper gash appeared on his skin. It was not like a normal wound, because the edges of the gash were smoking, and burning, like the silver was eating away at his skin.
The wound was not like any wound I had ever seen.
It was black at the edges, with lines of silver light spreading before our eyes like poison through his veins. It was consuming him, it was killing him, and I could do nothing to stop it.
Kaelen looked down at his chest, and his gray eyes widened.
I could see the realization in his eyes. The silver would not stop, it would keep burning, keep spreading, and keep weakening him. He could not heal from this wound, unless the Silver is flushed out immediately, but I also knew that he would not stop the battle, because that could mean, he was admitting defeat.
So he could only try to survive it.
If Kaelen did not stop the battle, he knew what it meant.
I watched in horror. I wanted to scream, to run to him, and to stop the fight. But i could not, because this was the Alpha fight, to decide Shadowfang’s fate. So I could not intervene.
Kaelen’s movements slowed, and his breathing grew heavier. The silver was poisoning him faster, and Viktor knew it.
The rogue Alpha laughed. It was a cold, and ugly sound that echoed across the battlefield.
"Your little obsessed want to be Luna mate, Serena, told me all about your weakness," Viktor said loudly, and broke in to an ugly laughter again. "She was very eager to share, and she gave me everything I needed to destroy you. At least she was useful for something."
Kaelen’s eyes flashed with anger, and I saw the fire in his gaze. He wanted to fight back, and he wanted to tear Viktor apart, but his body was failing him. The silver was too strong, and it was winning.
He tried to stand, but his legs hooked, and buckled beneath him, as the silver was taking hold.
"You are weak," Viktor snarled. "You do not deserve to lead, you do not deserve your pack, and you do not deserve your Luna."
Kaelen growled and forced himself to his feet.
It was a desperate move, and a last attempt. I could see it in his eyes, and I knew that he knew that he was losing. He knew he might not survive, but he would not give up.
He would fight until the very end.
He lunged at Viktor one more time, with his claws extended. But he was too slow, and Viktor was faster. He had anticipated the attack, and he had been waiting for it.
Viktor sidestepped and swung his claws again.
This time, there was no dodging, and no weaving. Kaelen was too slow, and too weak, and I could see that he was trying to move, but his body would not obey. The claws came down, and I closed my eyes for just a moment, because I was unable to watch.
When I opened my eyes, I saw that the silver claws, had found their mark, and they raked across Kaelen’s shoulder. Viktor left another gash open, giving Kaelen another wound that might not heal.
Kaelen staggered but did not fall.
His body was covered in wounds now, as blood soaked his dark fur, and his breathing became uneven, with the way his chest moved. But he did not fall.
I saw the blood pooling at his feet.
I saw his legs shaking beneath him, and I knew that he was barely standing, and barely holding on, but he did not give up, and he did not fall. He would not fall, not while I was still watching.
The Kaelen I knew, would not fall, not yet, and not while he was still breathing.
He forced himself to stay standing.
I could see the effort it took, because every muscle strained, and every breath was a struggle. But he stood for me, he stood for the pack, and he stood because he would not let Viktor win.
Kaelen’s gray eyes met mine for just a moment, and he smiled. I saw the love in them, the fear, and the determination, but it was as if he was saying goodbye.
I could feel it in the bond, with the way it cut through my chest in pain. It was as if he was telling me that he loved me, that he was sorry, and that he would not make it.
I gripped my chest, and I shook my head because I refused to accept it. He was not going to die, and I would not let him.
Kaelen turned to look at Viktor again with a gaze that seemed to say, that he was not giving up, and that he was still fighting.
I wanted to scream, and I wanted to run to him, but I could not. I could only watch, only pray for strength, and only hope, that by some miracle, he survives this.
Viktor lunged again.
The rogue Alpha moved with the speed of a predator, who had already tasted victory. He knew Kaelen was weak, and of course he knew that the silver was working. He was savoring the kill, but Kaelen was not dead yet.
And as long as he was still standing, there was still hope.
Kaelen raised his claws to meet him, because the fight was not over yet.
