The Fox And The Last Dragon

Chapter 238: Transcending Time And Space

  • Next Chapter

Cyrus twisted mid-air, wings folding tight as the Dragon King’s claws raked empty space.

He rolled left, scales scraping marble as a massive tail swept where his head had been.

The King’s size worked against him in the enclosed throne room—each movement telegraphed, power sacrificed for precision.

Cyrus darted beneath spread wings, crimson energy flickering around his fists.

"This isn’t you!" His voice cracked with desperation. "The Heart’s power is corrupting your judgment. Please—"

"Corrupting?" The King wheeled, golden light erupting from his maw in a concentrated beam.

Cyrus barely raised a shield in time, crimson energy warping under divine heat.

"I see clearly for the first time in millennia!"

The beam intensified, forcing Cyrus back step by agonizing step.

"They forged us to serve, and still they hoard what they bled to make."

The King’s voice rose to a roar that shook fractured walls. "Why should gods be eternal while we burn?"

Another explosion rocked the palace.

Closer this time.

Screams echoed through shattered corridors—spirits dying as the coalition pushed deeper into sacred halls.

The Dragon King’s attack faltered for just a moment, attention drawn toward the invasion.

Cyrus seized the opening, diving beneath the beam and rolling clear.

He came up in a crouch, wings spread defensively between the King and the Beating Heart.

"Because we chose this duty. We accepted their trust. Breaking it now doesn’t make us free—it makes us—"

"What?" Golden light pulsed brighter through cracked scales. "Failures? Traitors?"

The King’s laugh carried edges of madness.

"We already are, boy. The moment I let the other clans fall. The moment I prioritized this cursed crystal over my people."

His gaze fixed on the pulsing Heart with terrible hunger.

"If we’re damned regardless, why not claim divinity for ourselves?"

The Dragon King circled Cyrus, wings dragging across fractured marble, leaving trails of molten gold in their wake.

"All that stands between salvation and extinction is you."

His voice dropped to something almost gentle, more terrible than rage.

"One life, Cyrus. Mine or yours. The Heart demands blood either way."

Cyrus’s crimson eyes tracked every movement, wings held tight against his body.

"You’re delusional. Absorbing divine essence won’t save anyone—it’ll kill you. The gods died forging these crystals. What makes you think you’ll survive claiming their power?"

"Because I’m willing to burn for it."

The King’s massive form drew closer, golden light pulsing through cracked scales like a heartbeat.

"Step aside. Let me consume what the gods abandoned. Let me become the weapon our people need."

He paused just beyond striking range, ancient eyes boring into Cyrus with intensity that made reality waver.

"Or continue this futile resistance. Watch the coalition slaughter every dragon still breathing. Watch the realm collapse into ash and ruin."

His claws flexed, scraping stone.

"All because you refused to sacrifice one stubborn dragon who thinks himself righteous."

"I think myself sane." Cyrus’s voice cut cold through heated air. "The Heart rejected you for a reason. Forcing this bond will tear you apart from the inside."

"Then I’ll die protecting what matters."

The King’s wings spread wide, casting shadows that devoured light.

"Can you say the same?"

Cyrus’s wings faltered just for a heartbeat.

But a heartbeat was enough.

The Dragon King struck with devastating precision, claws raking across Cyrus’s chest.

Obsidian scales shattered like glass. Blood erupted in a crimson arc, spraying across marble floors.

Across the pulsing Heart.

The divine crystal flared violently as dragon blood touched its surface, drinking the offering with terrible hunger. Light exploded outward in waves that made the throne room shake.

The Beating Heart fed on his blood.

Kane’s breath stopped.

Every muscle locked as he watched Cyrus stagger backward, one hand pressed against the gaping wound. Blood poured between scaled fingers, pooling on cracked stone.

No.

Kane surged forward—

Small claws dug into his wrist with surprising strength.

"Wait." The dragon’s whisper cut through Kane’s panic. "Please, you can’t interfere."

"Cyrus is dying—"

"You have to see what happens next."

The Dragon King barely spared Cyrus a glance before turning toward the now-blazing Heart.

His wings spread wide, golden light pulsing through every crack in ancient scales.

"Finally." His voice shook with something between ecstasy and madness. "It recognizes the sacrifice."

He reached for the crystal again.

This time, when his claws touched divine surface, the Heart didn’t reject him.

It welcomed.

Power flooded through the Dragon King’s massive form. Golden light erupted from his eyes, his mouth, every fracture in his armor.

He threw his head back and roared—a sound that shattered what remained of the throne room’s windows.

Pure spirit energy coursed through him in waves.

And Kane gasped, doubling over behind the pillar.

His chest burned.

Not the synthetic compound’s familiar ache, but something deeper. Something fundamental tearing at the edges of his core.

It was as if even now, Kane could feel Cyrus’s pain, their bond transcending time and space itself.

His chest burned in sympathy, agony lancing through phantom wounds that mirrored the gashes torn across Cyrus’s scales.

The Dragon King’s form began to twist.

Grotesque. Wrong.

His wings sprouted additional joints, membranes stretching thin enough to show bone beneath.

Scales erupted in clusters across his flesh, some obsidian, others gold, fighting for dominance.

His jaw elongated, cracking as it reformed into something monstrous—too many teeth, too wide, distorting his face beyond recognition.

Divine power fought the vessel trying to contain it.

The Heart’s crimson light pulsed faster, brighter, feeding the King’s transformation into something that should never exist.

But just as the grotesque metamorphosis reached its peak—

CRACK.

The sound split reality itself.

A massive fissure tore through the Beating Heart’s crystalline surface, fracturing the divine artifact straight down its center.

The Dragon King’s roar cut off abruptly as power hemorrhaged from the breaking crystal, crimson light flooding the throne room in blinding waves.

Kane’s gaze snapped toward the source of the crack.

A nine-tailed fox spirit stood before the Heart, one clawed hand extended toward its fracturing surface.

Silver fur caught the dying light. Amber eyes blazed with ancient fury.

The fox’s features carried a terrible familiarity—Kane’s own face, but older, harder, marked by centuries of survival and loss.

No.

Kane’s breath stopped.

That’s me.

The older version of himself stood between the dying King and the shattered Heart, nine silver tails blazing with foxfire that rivaled divine radiance itself.
