The Fox And The Last Dragon
Chapter 237: Betrayal Of The Beating Heart
Kane and the dragon slipped through a narrow service entrance, designed for servants who’d once attended the throne room’s glory.
The passage opened behind a shattered pillar, obsidian fragments scattered across marble floors.
They crouched low.
The boy’s crimson energy dimmed until barely a flicker remained, his small form pressing close to Kane’s side.
The throne room stretched vast before them—columns of black stone rising toward vaulted ceilings where constellations had once been painted. Now only cracks remained, creating a spiderweb pattern across the ancient murals.
But Kane’s attention fixed on the chamber’s center.
Cyrus stood alone, transformed halfway between human and dragon.
Obsidian scales covered his arms and neck, catching the crimson light bleeding through the room. His wings spread wide, casting shadows across cracked marble.
He looked younger somehow. Less burdened.
On the far end, seated upon a throne of molten stone, a massive dragon watched.
Kane’s chest constricted.
The Dragon King.
Larger than Cyrus by half, his obsidian scales bore deep cracks that glowed with golden light—like cooling magma barely contained beneath ancient armor.
Power radiated from him in waves that made Kane’s fox instincts scream to flee.
But it was the crystal that stole Kane’s breath entirely.
The Beating Heart.
Suspended in the air between Cyrus and the King, the massive crimson crystal pulsed with divine energy.
Each throb sent ripples through reality itself, distorting the atmosphere and making shadows dance.
Kane remembered Cyrus’s words from their bedtime story.
Each one the size of a cathedral’s altar.
He hadn’t fully comprehended the scale until now.
The Heart blazed like a captured star, its faceted surface reflecting infinite variations of red—from deep burgundy to bright scarlet, from blood-dark crimson to the pale pink of dawn.
Its power washed over Kane even from this distance.
His nine tails trembled, responding to divine energy that predated the realms themselves.
His foxfire flickered involuntarily, silver flames dancing across his skin in recognition of something greater, older, and impossibly vast.
This wasn’t just a relic.
This was the beating heart of creation itself.
And Cyrus stood before it, wings spread, scales gleaming, facing down the Dragon King while reality trembled around them.
"They’ve breached the inner districts." Cyrus’s voice echoed across the throne room, sharp and urgent.
The Dragon King remained motionless, golden light pulsing through cracks in his scales.
"Your Majesty, they’re slaughtering anyone who resists. The coalition wants the Heart. They’ll tear this palace apart to—"
"Let them come."
The King’s voice rumbled like grinding continents, each word carrying weight that made the marble floor tremble.
"They cannot touch what belongs to the gods."
Cyrus’s wings flared. "They don’t need to touch it. They need us dead so they can claim it afterward."
"Then we fight."
"We’re losing." Crimson energy crackled around Cyrus’s fists. "The other clans are already gone. Azure fell yesterday. Jade scattered. Golden and Silver—"
"Cowards who fled rather than defend their sacred duty."
"They fled because staying meant extinction!" Cyrus stepped forward, desperation bleeding through controlled fury. "Please. Destroy the Heart. Shatter it before the coalition can—"
"Never."
The word carried such finality that reality itself seemed to still.
The Dragon King rose from his throne, his massive form casting shadows that swallowed light.
"The gods entrusted us with their essence. We do not break faith because lesser spirits grow ambitious."
His gaze fixed on the pulsing crystal, something almost tender crossing ancient features.
"The Heart remains whole. The Heart remains sacred. The Heart remains ours."
Just then, the palace shuddered.
An explosion tore through the outer walls, sending tremors racing across marble floors. Dust rained from cracked ceilings. Somewhere distant, stone collapsed.
"What of your plans now?" Cyrus’s voice cut through the settling debris. "We’re out of options. Out of time. The enemy is here."
Another blast rocked the foundation.
The throne room tilted slightly, ancient supports groaning under strain they’d never been designed to withstand.
"Not completely."
The Dragon King’s eyes flashed—just for a moment—with something that made Kane’s stomach drop.
Not determination. Not resolve.
Hunger.
Pure, consuming greed that twisted ancient features into something terrible.
The King rose fully, massive wings unfurling until they brushed both walls. His cracked scales pulsed brighter, golden light intensifying with each heartbeat.
He reached for the Beating Heart.
Clawed fingers extended toward the divine crystal, and the air between them warped violently. Reality bent around that massive hand, space distorting as if the universe itself recoiled from what was about to happen.
"Your Majesty, no—"
Cyrus surged forward, crimson energy blazing.
But he stopped mid-flight, wings frozen, as understanding crashed over him.
Kane saw it in the way Cyrus’s expression shattered. In how his scales dimmed, light dying beneath obsidian armor. In the horrified recognition bleeding through every line of his body.
The Dragon King meant to absorb the Heart’s power himself.
Not to protect it nor to wield it against the coalition.
But to consume divine essence that had created the realms themselves.
To become something greater than dragon, greater than spirit, greater than the gods who’d forged the crystal from their own immortal blood.
The Dragon King’s claws closed around the Beating Heart.
Divine light exploded outward, crimson energy flooding the throne room with power that made Kane’s bones vibrate. The crystal pulsed once, twice—then erupted in violent rejection.
The King screamed.
His massive form flew backward, slamming into the obsidian throne hard enough to crack stone.
Golden light flickered wildly through his scales as he struggled upright, smoke rising from burned palms.
Cyrus dropped from his frozen stance, wings beating hard as he positioned himself between the King and the Heart.
"Stand down!"
"It rejected me." The King’s voice shook with something between rage and disbelief.
His eyes fixed on the still-pulsing crystal, then slowly tracked to Cyrus. "After everything. After centuries of faithful service."
Understanding dawned across ancient features, twisting into fury.
"The Heart senses someone worthier." The King’s gaze burned into Cyrus with terrible intensity. "Someone younger. Someone who still believes in mercy over power."
His wings spread wide, cracks in his scales blazing like molten gold.
"You think yourself fit to inherit what I’ve protected? To claim divine essence meant for kings?"
The King launched forward with devastating speed.
Claws slashed through space where Cyrus had stood moments before.
Crimson and golden energy collided mid-air, shockwaves rippling outward in concentric circles that shattered nearby columns.
Kane’s hands clenched against broken marble.
Every instinct screamed to intervene.
But the dragon’s small hand gripped his wrist, holding him back.
Stay low. No matter what happens.
