The Fox And The Last Dragon

Chapter 239: Faith And The Fall Of Heaven

The Dragon King’s corrupted form lurched toward the older Kane, golden light bleeding from fractured scales.

"Who dares enter my throne room?" His voice came distorted, layered with divine resonance that made the marble floor crack. "You think a fox can stand against gods?"

But older Kane didn’t flinch.

He stepped closer to the shattering Heart, silver flames erupting around nine blazing tails.

Present-day Kane watched, breath frozen, as recognition flickered across Cyrus’s bloodied face.

"You," Cyrus whispered, crimson eyes wide. "You came."

The older fox’s amber gaze softened for just a moment, meeting Cyrus’s.

"Always."

Then he turned back to the King, claws extending as he reached toward the fracturing crystal.

Is that really... me? Kane’s mind reeled. My past life? Or something else?

The dragon beside him gripped Kane’s wrist tighter.

Older Kane’s claws pierced the Beating Heart’s surface. Divine essence erupted outward in violent waves—but instead of destroying him, the fox absorbed it.

Crimson light poured into his form, channeling through nine silver tails that blazed brighter than stars.

The older Kane’s body convulsed as divine power fought his spirit core, but he held firm. Silver foxfire met divine radiance in a maelstrom of competing energies.

The Dragon King roared, lunging forward.

But older Kane’s free hand thrust outward, unleashing concentrated foxfire infused with stolen divinity.

The blast caught the King mid-charge, slamming him backward into shattered pillars.

Corrupted golden energy clashed against purified divine flame.

The Dragon King lurched backward, golden light hemorrhaging from corrupted scales.

He crashed through marble pillars that had stood for millennia, stone exploding into dust around his convulsing form.

Older Kane turned from the devastation, nine tails sweeping low as he crossed the throne room.

He knelt beside Cyrus, whose crimson blood had pooled across fractured marble, and slid one arm beneath scaled shoulders.

The other hooked under Cyrus’s knees.

Then he lifted.

The same way Cyrus had always carried him—protective, gentle despite the strength required.

Cyrus’s head fell against the older Kane’s shoulder, breath shallow.

"We should end this." His voice came weak but determined. "Together."

One bloodied claw reached up, touching the fox’s face with surprising tenderness.

Older Kane shifted Cyrus in his arms, positioning them both before the fracturing Heart.

Crimson dragonfire erupted from Cyrus’s extended palm—weak but unwavering.

Silver foxfire blazed from nine tails in response.

The two energies met mid-air, spiraling around each other.

Dragon and fox.

Fire and spirit.

Ancient and eternal.

Their powers synchronized in perfect harmony, creating something neither could achieve alone—a blinding column of merged flame that struck the Beating Heart’s center.

It exploded into pure energy, erupting outward in waves that consumed everything.

The throne room vanished in white light.

The Dragon King’s roar cut off abruptly.

The palace walls disintegrated.

Present-day Kane threw his arm across his eyes as the detonation blazed through inherited memory—

And suddenly he stood on ash.

Nothing remained but scorched earth stretching endlessly in all directions.

The Spirit Realm had fallen.

Kane jolted awake, lungs seizing on a breath that tasted of ash.

His hands flew to his chest—no wounds, no blood.

Just the pounding rhythm of his own terrified heart.

The bedroom materialized around him in fragments. Glass overlooking a dark ocean. Silk sheets tangled around his legs.

The villa.

His gaze snapped to the nightstand.

The dragon egg pulsed with faint crimson light, its shell intact and whole.

Not hatched. Not stolen.

Was any of it real?

The Spirit Realm’s destruction. The throne room battle. Older Kane and Cyrus destroying the Beating Heart together.

Kane pressed both palms against his temples as a familiar ache bloomed behind his eyes.

Dull and insistent. The synthetic compound’s warning throb.

Present day, he realized with sickening clarity. I’m back.

Moonlight spilled through floor-to-ceiling windows, casting silver across empty sheets beside him.

Kane’s hand reached across the mattress. Empty.

"Cyrus?" His voice cracked in the darkness.

No answer came from the silent villa.

Just the egg’s steady pulse and the distant crash of waves against volcanic rock.

Kane’s fingers traced the obsidian shell, searching for the warmth that had pulsed through their bond in the dream.

"Hey," he whispered. "I know you’re in there. I just saw you—we were together in the Spirit Realm."

The egg remained silent.

No layered voice answering. No small dragon materializing to guide him through collapsing nightmares.

Just smooth volcanic glass beneath his palm and the steady throb of life within.

Kane pulled back, jaw tightening.

His gaze snapped toward the balcony doors and the dark volcanic peak looming beyond.

Cyrus had gone to face whatever creature lurked beneath that mountain. The same thing their son’s inherited memories warned about—something that should have died with the Black Dragon clan.

Kane shoved off the bed, bare feet hitting cold marble.

Getting to the volcano presented problems.

Flying? Not without wings.

Hiking? Through miles of dense jungle in darkness, while synthetic poison degraded his spirit core with every passing hour.

The golf cart keys sat on the kitchen counter, but the narrow paths twisted treacherously at night.

Kane’s fox ears flattened against his skull as he weighed impossible options.

His reflection stared back from the dark glass doors—amber eyes wide, nine tails barely visible in the shadows.

Older Kane had stood beside Cyrus as an equal. Lifted him. Protected him. Destroyed the Beating Heart together instead of cowering behind wards and locked doors.

"Screw that," Kane muttered.

Older Kane had lifted Cyrus like he weighed nothing. Had channeled divine

The balcony doors opened with a thought, ocean wind rushing in to whip silver hair across his face.

Kane stepped outside, bare feet on smooth stone, and let the transformation take him.

His spine arched as bones shifted beneath skin. Silver fur erupted across his arms, his chest, spreading in waves as his body expanded.

Claws extended from fingertips that grew sharp and deadly. Nine tails blazed into full manifestation, each one wreathed in foxfire that illuminated the night.

Power surged through every nerve—not the overwhelming chaos from Elias’s lab, but controlled strength he’d barely begun to understand.

His clothes tore as muscle and sinew reformed. Height increased by nearly two feet. His face elongated slightly, amber eyes glowing molten gold in the darkness.

The full nine tailed form settled around him like armor.

Kane flexed his claws, feeling raw power coiling in limbs built for combat instead of constant rescue.

The volcanic peak loomed in the distance.

He crouched low, tails sweeping behind him in preparation.

Then he leaped.
