Chapter 76: Eleven Eighteen

The workshop remained silent. Rin stared at the glowing number floating above the detector.

11:18.

He could still hear Aiden’s words in his head.

Someone wasn’t waiting for us at 11:17.

They were waiting for us at 11:18.

Nobody moved. Finally, Sol broke the silence.

"Let’s not assume we understand what this means."

Rin nodded.

"Agreed."

Noctis looked at the detector.

"The number wasn’t part of the original reading."

"So it appeared after we opened the hidden room?" Rin asked.

Sol shook his head.

"Not exactly."

He adjusted the device.

"The original signal was recorded when the clock moved from 11:17 to 11:18."

Rin frowned.

"And now the detector is showing the number itself."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"We don’t know."

Rin sighed.

"Of course."

Kaelith stood beside him.

"At least we have something concrete."

Rin looked at him.

"One minute."

Kaelith nodded.

"One minute."

Rin looked back at the projection. A single minute shouldn’t have been important.

Yet somehow, it was. Aiden remained silent.

Rin noticed.

"You okay?"

Aiden looked at him.

"Yes."

Rin studied his expression.

"You’re sure?"

Aiden nodded.

"I’m sure."

Rin didn’t push. The bell didn’t sound.

Aiden wasn’t lying. He simply didn’t know more than he had told them.

That was enough. Rin turned back to Sol.

"Can we reproduce the event?"

Sol looked at him.

"What?"

"11:17 to 11:18."

Noctis immediately understood.

"You want to see if the detector reacts again."

"Yes."

Sol hesitated.

"We don’t know what happened the first time."

"That’s why we do it carefully."

Sol exchanged a glance with Noctis.

Then nodded.

"Fine."

He reset the device. The projection disappeared.

The room became quiet. Sol activated the recording.

A clock appeared on the magical display.

11:16.

Everyone waited.

11:16.

11:17.

Nothing. Rin watched carefully.

The display reached 11:18. The detector flashed.

Everyone jumped. Sol immediately shut it down.

The room went dark. Rin stared.

"Did you see that?"

Noctis nodded.

"Yes."

Sol checked the readings.

"Same reaction."

Rin stepped closer.

"What changed?"

Sol pointed at the display.

"The energy appeared exactly when the time changed."

"From 11:17 to 11:18."

"Yes."

Rin frowned.

"But why?"

Noctis looked thoughtful.

"Maybe the time itself isn’t the trigger."

Rin looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

"Maybe 11:18 is simply the moment something happened."

Rin’s expression changed.

"Something that happened somewhere else."

Noctis nodded.

"Exactly."

Aiden slowly looked toward the window.

"The tower."

Rin turned.

"You think the tower is connected?"

"I don’t know."

Aiden paused.

"But when I remembered it, all the clocks were different."

"Except one?"

Aiden nodded.

"One was showing 11:18."

Rin went still.

"You didn’t tell us that before."

"I didn’t remember until now."

Rin looked at him carefully.

"What happened when you saw it?"

Aiden closed his eyes.

"I was standing in the tower."

He spoke slowly, as though each word had to be pulled from somewhere deep.

"There were clocks everywhere."

"How many?"

"I don’t know."

"Dozens?"

"More."

Aiden swallowed.

"And one of them was moving."

Rin leaned forward.

"Moving how?"

"The others were frozen."

Aiden opened his eyes.

"Only one clock was working."

Rin felt a chill.

"What time?"

Aiden answered immediately.

"11:18."

Ji-ho raised his hand. Everyone looked at him.

"I have a question."

Rin nodded.

"What?"

"If the clock was working..."

Ji-ho pointed at the detector.

"...why did it stop?"

Nobody answered.

Ji-ho frowned.

"Exactly."

Sol looked at the device.

"That’s actually a good question."

Ji-ho smiled proudly.

"I have those sometimes."

Noctis laughed. Rin looked at Aiden.

"Did the clock stop?"

Aiden shook his head.

"No."

Rin frowned.

"Then what happened?"

Aiden’s expression became distant.

"I left."

"Why?"

"I don’t know."

"Who was with you?"

"I don’t know."

"Where did you go?"

Aiden closed his eyes.

"I don’t know."

Ji-ho sighed.

"We’re going in circles."

Aiden looked at him.

"Sorry."

Ji-ho immediately waved his hand.

"No, no. It’s not your fault."

Aiden smiled faintly.

"I know."

Rin watched them. Something about their exchange made him smile. Even with all the mysteries surrounding them, they were still themselves.

That mattered. Sol suddenly looked at the detector.

"Wait."

Rin turned.

"What?"

Sol pointed. The number was changing.

11:18

Then—

11:19.

The energy didn’t disappear. It became stronger. Rin stepped closer.

"That’s new."

Noctis nodded.

"Very."

The number continued.

11:20.

The detector flashed again.

Then—

11:21.

Rin stared.

"What is it doing?"

Sol shook his head.

"I don’t know."

The number reached 11:22. Then suddenly stopped. The screen went black.

Everyone remained silent. Rin looked at Sol.

"What happened?"

Sol slowly answered:

"It wasn’t replaying the past."

Rin frowned.

"Then what was it doing?"

Sol looked at the dead screen.

"It was counting."

Aiden’s face changed.

"Counting toward what?"

Noctis shook his head.

"We don’t know."

Rin looked toward the window. The forest was still. But something about the air felt different.

He couldn’t explain it. Then the System appeared.

[HOST.]

Rin sighed.

"Please tell me you don’t have a romantic mission right now."

A pause.

[THE SYSTEM HAS RESPECTFULLY DECIDED TO WAIT.]

Rin blinked.

"Thank you."

[CURRENT SITUATION IS TOO INTERESTING.]

Rin laughed.

"Even you think this is strange?"

[YES.]

"Good."

[SYSTEM ALSO WISHES TO REMIND HOST THAT THE DATE WAS SUCCESSFUL.]

Rin closed his eyes.

"Of course."

Kaelith smiled beside him.

"You did have a nice afternoon."

Rin looked at him.

"I did."

The System remained silent.

For once. They spent the next hour trying to reproduce the countdown.

Nothing happened.

11:18.

Nothing.

11:19.

Nothing.

11:20.

Nothing. The detector remained completely inactive. Sol eventually shut everything down.

"Whatever caused it is no longer here."

Rin nodded.

"Or it only happens once."

Noctis frowned.

"Then why did it happen tonight?"

Rin looked at him.

"Maybe because we found the room."

Aiden spoke quietly.

"Or because the clock moved."

Rin turned.

"Which means..."

Aiden finished:

"...something noticed."

Nobody liked that answer. But nobody could deny it. Later, the group gathered in the library.

Sol had brought every old record that mentioned the northern region. Noctis had maps spread across the table.

Aiden sat quietly. Ji-ho was reading a book upside down.

Rin noticed.

"Ji-ho."

"Hm?"

"You’re holding it upside down."

Ji-ho looked down.

He turned it around.

"...I knew that."

Aiden smiled.

"No, you didn’t."

"I was testing you."

"Of course."

Rin laughed.

Then he looked at the map. The northern mountains were marked in several places.

One location had been crossed out centuries ago. Noctis pointed toward it.

"Here."

Rin leaned closer.

"What is that?"

"An abandoned observatory."

Rin looked at Aiden. Aiden stared at the map. His expression slowly changed.

"That."

Rin noticed.

"You recognize it?"

Aiden nodded.

"I think so."

Sol looked at him.

"From the tower?"

Aiden nodded.

"I think the tower I remember was there."

Silence.

Rin looked at the map. The observatory was far beyond the northern forest. Much farther than the gate.

"Why was it abandoned?"

Noctis checked the records.

"There’s no clear reason."

"Nothing?"

"Only one sentence."

Rin waited.

Noctis read it.

"The observatory was sealed after the clocks stopped."

Everyone became quiet.

Ji-ho slowly lowered his book.

"...I officially hate clocks."

Rin laughed despite himself. Then he looked at Aiden. Aiden wasn’t laughing.

He was staring at the map.

"The clocks didn’t stop."

Rin frowned.

"What?"

Aiden pointed to the sentence.

"They didn’t stop."

"Then what happened?"

Aiden’s voice was quiet.

"They all showed different times."

Rin felt his heart tighten.

"How do you know?"

Aiden looked at him.

"I remember now."

Everyone became silent.

Aiden continued.

"The observatory wasn’t abandoned because the clocks stopped."

He took a breath.

"It was abandoned because the clocks started showing the future."

Nobody spoke. Even Ji-ho had nothing to say. Rin slowly looked at the map again.

"The future?"

Aiden nodded.

"That’s what I remember."

Sol immediately reached for the records.

"Are you sure?"

"No."

Rin looked at him. Aiden smiled faintly.

"But I’m more sure than I was before."

Rin nodded. That was enough. He wouldn’t push.

They had a location now. An observatory. A tower. Clocks.

11:18.

And possibly something that could show the future. Rin closed his notebook.

"We’re not going tonight."

Sol nodded.

"Agreed."

"Tomorrow?"

Noctis looked at the map.

"Tomorrow."

Rin looked toward Kaelith. Kaelith nodded.

"We’ll go together."

Rin smiled.

Then Ji-ho raised his hand.

"Can I stay here?"

Everyone looked at him.

"Why?"

Ji-ho pointed toward the map.

"Because every time we go north, something terrible happens."

Aiden looked at him.

"That’s not statistically accurate."

Ji-ho stared.

"You’ve been counting?"

Aiden smiled.

"Maybe."

Ji-ho sighed.

"Fine. I’m coming."

Rin laughed.

Much later, the fortress became quiet. Rin stood alone on the balcony.

The northern mountains were barely visible beneath the moonlight. Tomorrow they would go there.

Not because they were chasing another mystery blindly. Because they finally had a reason.

Aiden’s memory. The abandoned observatory. The clocks. The strange countdown.

11:18.

Rin placed his hands on the railing. He thought about the door. It had shown them the past.

Now perhaps the observatory would show them something else. Maybe the future. Maybe another piece of the past. Maybe nothing.

He smiled.

"One step at a time."

Kaelith appeared beside him.

"You say that a lot."

Rin laughed.

"It’s becoming my new rule."

Kaelith leaned against the railing.

"Good rule."

Rin looked at him.

"Are you ready for tomorrow?"

"Yes."

"You aren’t worried?"

"Of course I am."

Rin raised an eyebrow.

"You don’t look worried."

Kaelith smiled.

"I don’t need to look worried."

Rin laughed.

Then Kaelith reached for his hand. Rin took it. For a while, they simply watched the mountains.

No System. No missions. No mysteries. Just quiet.

Then Rin whispered:

"Whatever we find tomorrow..."

Kaelith looked at him.

"...we’ll face it together."

Kaelith squeezed his hand.

"Together."

Far away, beyond the northern forest, something inside the abandoned observatory moved. One ancient clock trembled. Its hands slowly shifted.

11:17.

Then—

11:18.

A second clock began moving.

Then a third. One by one, lights appeared in the darkness.

Not all showing the same time. Some showed hours that had already passed. Some showed moments that had not yet happened.

And at the very top of the tower, a single clock began counting backward. Rin couldn’t see any of it.

Not yet. But the observatory was no longer asleep. It had been waiting.

And now that Rin had remembered the first piece... the second piece had finally awakened.
