The BL System Won't Let Me Rest!

Chapter 77: The Observatory

  • Next Chapter

The next morning, the fortress was unusually quiet. Rin stood in front of the large map spread across the table in the main hall.

The northern mountains were marked in red ink. Beyond them lay the abandoned observatory.

The place Aiden remembered. The place where the clocks had supposedly shown the future.

Rin stared at the location for several seconds.

"We go there, we look around, and we come back."

Ji-ho raised his hand.

"That sounds suspiciously simple."

Rin looked at him.

"It is simple."

"That’s what you said before the forest."

Rin sighed.

"Fair."

Noctis laughed. Sol was checking the supplies.

"We’ll be prepared."

Aiden stood quietly near the window. He hadn’t said much that morning.

Rin noticed.

"You okay?"

Aiden looked over.

"Yes."

Rin nodded. He didn’t ask anything else. He had promised himself he wouldn’t force Aiden’s memories.

Kaelith approached Rin.

"Ready?"

Rin nodded.

"As ready as I’ll ever be."

Kaelith smiled.

"Good."

Rin looked around the room.

Sol. Noctis. Aiden. Ji-ho. Kaelith. His friends.

The people who had stayed beside him through every strange event. For a brief moment, Rin felt an inexplicable warmth in his chest.

He didn’t understand it. He simply smiled.

"Let’s go."

The journey toward the northern mountains took most of the day. The farther they traveled, the colder the air became.

The trees grew thinner. The mountains rose higher.

Eventually, even Ji-ho stopped complaining. That alone made Rin suspicious.

"You’ve been quiet for ten minutes."

Ji-ho looked offended.

"I’m capable of silence."

"Are you sure?"

"No."

Rin laughed. Aiden walked a few steps ahead. He kept looking toward the mountains.

Kaelith noticed.

"You recognize something?"

Aiden shook his head.

"Not exactly."

"Then what?"

"It feels familiar."

Rin heard him.

"Don’t force it."

Aiden nodded.

"I won’t."

They continued. After another hour, the observatory finally appeared.

It stood on the highest point of a rocky hill. The tower was enormous.

Much taller than Rin had imagined. Its stone walls were covered in old markings.

Several windows had been shattered. The main entrance was partially buried beneath fallen stone.

Ji-ho stared.

"I officially don’t like this place."

Noctis smiled.

"You haven’t even entered."

"That’s why I’m making the decision early."

Rin laughed. Then he looked at Aiden. Aiden had stopped walking.

His face was pale. Rin approached.

"Aiden?"

Aiden stared at the tower.

"I’ve been here."

Everyone became quiet.

"You remember?"

"Not everything."

Aiden touched his temple.

"But this..."

He looked at the highest part of the tower.

"I remember standing there."

Rin followed his gaze.

"The top?"

Aiden nodded.

"Yes."

"With someone?"

Aiden closed his eyes. A faint expression of pain crossed his face.

"I don’t know."

Rin placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Then we take it slowly."

Aiden opened his eyes.

"Thank you."

They entered the observatory through the broken entrance. Inside, the air was cold.

Dust covered everything. Old machinery filled the walls.

Hundreds of gears had stopped moving long ago. But the strangest thing was the clocks.

They were everywhere. Small clocks. Large clocks. Wall clocks. Magical clocks. Mechanical clocks.

Some were broken. Others had no hands. Some had numbers written in languages none of them recognized.

Rin slowly walked forward.

"This is insane."

Sol looked around.

"The machinery is older than anything we’ve found in the fortress."

Noctis examined one of the walls.

"Some of these symbols match the ones from the gate."

Rin immediately turned.

"They do?"

Noctis nodded.

"Not exactly. But the structure is similar."

Rin approached. He touched one of the markings. Nothing happened.

He removed his hand. Still nothing.

"Good."

Ji-ho looked at him.

"You’re disappointed?"

"No."

Rin smiled.

"I just don’t want another door opening."

Ji-ho nodded.

"Finally, someone understands me."

They climbed higher. Every floor contained more clocks. Every clock showed something different.

10:02.

3:47.

8:31.

12:00.

Some had stopped. Others moved backward. One clock had no numbers at all.

It simply had a single word written across its face.

WAIT.

Rin stared at it. Kaelith stood beside him.

"Don’t touch it."

"I wasn’t going to."

"You were thinking about it."

"...Maybe."

Kaelith smiled. Rin shook his head.

"You’re getting too good at reading me."

"Maybe I’ve had practice."

Rin smiled.

"With me?"

Kaelith looked at him.

"Maybe."

For some reason, those words caused a strange ache in Rin’s chest.

A familiar feeling. Almost painful. Rin looked away. He didn’t know why. He didn’t ask.

At the fourth floor, Aiden suddenly stopped.

"Wait."

Everyone turned. Aiden pointed toward the wall. There was a large circular symbol carved into the stone.

At its center was a clock. The hands showed:

11:18.

Rin approached. The moment he saw it, his heart started beating faster.

Not because of fear. Because of recognition. He had seen it before.

Not in the observatory. Somewhere else.

A room. A table. A key. Someone waiting.

Then—

nothing.

The memory vanished. Rin grabbed the wall.

Kaelith immediately caught his arm.

"Rin."

"I’m okay."

Kaelith didn’t let go.

"Are you sure?"

Rin nodded.

"Yes."

The System appeared.

[HOST.]

Rin sighed.

"What?"

[MEMORY DISTURBANCE DETECTED.]

Rin frowned.

"I know."

[SYSTEM RECOMMENDS REST.]

"I’m fine."

[SYSTEM DISAGREES.]

Rin smiled faintly.

"Noted."

The window disappeared. Rin looked at the symbol again.

"11:18."

Aiden nodded.

"This is the tower."

Sol examined the carving.

"Maybe this is what triggered your memory."

Noctis looked at the surrounding walls.

"Then perhaps there is something beneath it."

They searched. Nothing. No hidden passage. No keyhole. No mechanism.

Nothing. Then Ji-ho spoke.

"Maybe we should stop."

Everyone looked at him. Ji-ho pointed toward the floor.

"Because..."

A thin crack had appeared beneath them.

Rin stared.

"Oh."

The crack spread. A low rumble passed through the tower.

Everyone stepped back. The clocks began moving.

One by one.

10:02.

10:03.

10:04.

Then another.

11:16.

11:17.

Rin froze.

Aiden looked terrified.

"Get away from the center."

Rin didn’t move.

"Why?"

Aiden’s voice shook.

"Because I remember this."

The clock reached:

11:18.

Everything stopped. Silence. Then the tower spoke. Not with a voice. With light.

The entire observatory illuminated at once. The symbols on the walls connected. The clocks began displaying the same time.

11:18.

Every single one. Rin looked around.

"What is happening?"

Sol’s detector exploded with light. Noctis shouted:

"Rin!"

Rin turned. The floor beneath him had become transparent. Below was not another room.

It was darkness. Endless darkness. And inside that darkness...

Rin saw something.

A figure. Someone standing alone. Covered in blood.

Rin’s breath caught. He couldn’t see the face. But he knew the feeling.

His heart recognized something his mind didn’t.

"Who..."

The figure raised its head. Rin heard a voice. Not through his ears.

Inside his soul.

"Rin."

He froze.

Kaelith grabbed his hand.

"Don’t listen."

Rin looked at him. Kaelith’s face was suddenly pale.

"Kaelith?"

Kaelith stared into the darkness. Something about that figure frightened him. Not because he recognized it.

Because some part of him hated it. A hatred he couldn’t explain. The figure slowly lifted one hand.

The darkness cracked. The tower began shaking.

Sol shouted:

"We need to leave!"

Noctis grabbed Aiden. Ji-ho ran toward the stairs.

Rin tried to move. He couldn’t. The darkness below him was pulling. Kaelith tightened his grip.

"Rin!"

Rin looked at him.

"Don’t let go."

"I won’t."

The tower shook again. Stone fell from above. Everyone shouted.

Then the darkness opened completely.

Rin fell. Kaelith jumped after him.

"RIN!"

The last thing Rin saw was Kaelith reaching for him. Then everything disappeared.

Rin couldn’t feel his body. There was no ground.

No sky. No sound. Nothing. Then a voice came.

Not the System. Not Kaelith.Something older. Something that seemed to exist everywhere.

"You still don’t understand."

Rin tried to speak. Nothing came out. The darkness surrounded him.

The voice continued.

"You searched for the curse."

A pause.

"You searched for the door."

Another pause.

"You searched for the people who betrayed you."

Rin’s heart tightened.

"What..."

His voice finally worked.

"Who are you?"

The darkness became brighter. For the first time, Rin saw something.

A shape. A presence. Something vast. Something that had watched him for longer than Rin could comprehend.

The World. Rin stared.

"What do you want?"

The answer was quiet. Almost sad.

"You trusted too easily."

Rin froze. The World continued.

"You never questioned me."

Rin’s eyes widened.

"What?"

The darkness began collapsing. The voice became distant.

"This cycle has failed."

Rin tried to reach for something. Anything.

Kaelith. Sol. Someone. But there was nothing.

Then, from somewhere impossibly far away, Rin heard another voice.

A broken voice. A desperate voice. A voice filled with love and grief.

"My love..."

Rin’s eyes widened.

"Who?"

The voice came again.

"Come back."

Rin’s heart broke. He didn’t know why. Tears appeared in his eyes.

"Who are you?"

The voice whispered one final time.

"Come back to me."

Everything went dark.

And then—

RESET.

Rin reached forward again. There was nothing there. Yet he could still feel that voice.

It wasn’t simply calling him. It was waiting for him.

Somewhere beyond the darkness, beyond the World, beyond everything Rin understood, someone was desperately trying to reach him.

Rin’s fingers trembled.

"Please..."

He didn’t know who he was speaking to.

"Tell me your name."

Silence. Then the voice came again.

"You already know it."

Rin froze.

"No..."

A strange warmth spread through his chest. For one brief moment, an image appeared.

A hand reaching toward his. A familiar smile. A pair of eyes looking at him with an emotion so overwhelming that Rin couldn’t breathe.

Then another image. A prison. Darkness. Chains. Someone standing alone for what seemed like an eternity.

Rin tried to reach him.

"Wait!"

The vision shattered. Rin screamed.

"KAELITH!"

The name escaped his mouth before he could think. Silence.

Rin stared into the darkness. He didn’t understand.

Why had that name come so naturally? Why did saying it hurt? Why did his heart feel as though it had remembered something his mind had forgotten?

Then the voice whispered one last time.

"My love..."

Rin’s tears continued falling.

"Come back."

And for the first time, Rin understood one thing. He might have forgotten the person calling him.

But somewhere inside his soul...he had never forgotten the love.

The darkness consumed everything. And the World spoke.

"Last reset."

RESET.
