Chapter 75: The Morning After 11:18

Morning came quietly.

For once, Rin didn’t wake because of an alarm, a strange magical disturbance, or someone shouting his name from outside the door.

He woke because sunlight had found its way through the curtains.

Rin opened one eye. Then the other. For several seconds, he simply stared at the ceiling.

Everything felt normal. Almost. Then he remembered the previous night.

The hidden room. The clock.

11:17.

Then—

11:18.

Rin sat up.

"...Right."

He rubbed his face.

"That happened."

He reached for the notebook on his bedside table. It was still there. He opened it and looked at the last page.

The hidden room.

The clock.

11:17 → 11:18.

Aiden remembers someone.

Aiden remembers being late.

And beneath it, Rin had written:

Don’t force the memory.

He stared at those words for a moment. Then nodded.

"Good."

That was probably the most sensible thing he’d written in weeks. The mystery was finally giving them pieces.

There was no reason to tear everything apart just to get the whole picture immediately.

Rin closed the notebook. Then the System appeared.

[HOST.]

Rin sighed.

"Good morning to you too."

[GOOD MORNING.]

"That was suspiciously polite."

[SYSTEM IS LEARNING.]

Rin narrowed his eyes.

"That’s even more suspicious."

A pause.

[SYSTEM HAS A MISSION.]

"There it is."

Rin threw himself backward onto the bed.

"I knew this was coming."

[ROMANTIC MISSION AVAILABLE.]

Rin covered his face.

"Please don’t."

[MISSION: PROPER DATE.]

Rin peeked between his fingers.

"What exactly does that mean?"

[HOST MUST SPEND AN AFTERNOON WITH KAELITH WITHOUT INVESTIGATING ANCIENT MYSTERIES.]

Rin stared.

"That’s actually..."

He stopped.

"Reasonable."

[SYSTEM IS PLEASED.]

"Don’t sound so proud."

[REWARD: ROMANTIC DEVELOPMENT +1%.]

Rin sat up.

"And if I refuse?"

[NO PENALTY.]

Rin blinked.

"Really?"

[YES.]

He smiled.

"You’re improving."

[HOWEVER, SYSTEM WILL BE DISAPPOINTED.]

Rin groaned.

"There it is."

By the time Rin reached the main hall, most of the others were already there.

Sol was drinking tea while reading several reports at once. Noctis sat beside him, looking through the detector readings.

Aiden stood near one of the windows. Ji-ho was eating.A lot.

Rin stopped beside him.

"Is that your breakfast?"

Ji-ho looked down.

"Yes."

"How many plates?"

"That’s a personal question."

Rin looked at the table.

"There are five."

Ji-ho immediately covered one with his arm.

"Four."

Rin laughed.

"You’re impossible."

"I’ve been told."

Aiden glanced over.

"You’ve been told many things."

Ji-ho pointed at him.

"You’re not helping."

Aiden smiled. Rin sat down. For a moment, everything seemed completely normal. Then Sol placed his report on the table.

"The clock didn’t react again."

Rin became serious.

"Nothing?"

"Nothing."

"Did you test the room?"

"Yes."

Noctis shook his head.

"No additional energy."

Rin nodded.

"So it was a single reaction."

"Yes."

"Do you think it was dangerous?"

Sol considered the question.

"Not from what we observed."

Rin relaxed slightly.

"And Aiden?"

Everyone looked toward Aiden.

Aiden shrugged.

"I remember the same thing."

"The person?"

"No."

"The room?"

"Not clearly."

"The voice?"

Aiden shook his head.

"Just the feeling that someone was there."

Rin nodded.

"Then we leave it alone."

Aiden looked at him.

"You aren’t going to ask?"

"No."

Aiden seemed slightly surprised.

"Why?"

"Because if you don’t remember, you don’t remember."

Rin leaned back.

"We have enough information to investigate without forcing your memory."

Aiden smiled faintly.

"Thank you."

Ji-ho raised his hand.

"I have a question."

Sol looked at him.

"What?"

"Can we investigate after breakfast?"

Sol sighed.

"We are having breakfast."

Ji-ho looked at his plate.

"I’m having a second breakfast."

Noctis laughed.

"Of course you are."

After breakfast, Sol and Noctis returned to the eastern workshop. They wanted to examine the detector component again.

Aiden stayed in the main hall. Ji-ho stayed with him.

Rin noticed that the two were now strangely comfortable around each other. Perhaps the new System connection was already doing something.

He didn’t ask. Some mysteries were better left alone. Kaelith approached Rin.

"You look distracted."

Rin smiled.

"I have a mission."

Kaelith raised an eyebrow.

"Another one?"

"Apparently."

"What is it?"

Rin hesitated. Then sighed.

"A date."

Kaelith’s expression softened immediately.

"Today?"

Rin nodded.

"The System says so."

Kaelith laughed.

"Then I suppose we shouldn’t disappoint it."

Rin pointed at him.

"Don’t encourage it."

"I’m not."

"You are."

"Maybe."

Rin shook his head.

"Where would you like to go?"

Kaelith thought.

"Somewhere quiet."

Rin nodded.

"Good."

"Somewhere without ancient doors."

"Excellent."

"Without mysterious clocks."

"Even better."

"And preferably without Sol shouting that we’ve discovered something."

Rin laughed.

"Now you’re asking for the impossible."

In the workshop, Sol suddenly shouted:

"RIN!"

Rin closed his eyes. Kaelith looked at him.

"You were saying?"

Rin sighed.

"I hate fate."

They walked toward the workshop. Sol stood beside the detector. Noctis was examining a crystal.

"What happened?"

Sol pointed toward the projection.

"The pattern changed."

Rin approached. The familiar heartbeat-like line was there.

But it was weaker now. Much weaker.

"What does that mean?"

Sol shook his head.

"We don’t know."

Noctis pointed to the second line.

"But this one disappeared completely."

Rin frowned.

"The one from the fortress?"

"Yes."

"So whatever was creating it stopped."

Sol nodded.

"Or moved."

Rin stared at the projection.

"Can you tell which?"

"No."

Rin thought for a moment.

"Then don’t chase it."

Sol looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because we don’t know what it is."

Noctis smiled.

"Good."

Rin looked at him.

"Good?"

"You’re learning patience."

Rin laughed.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

Sol closed the device.

"We’ll keep monitoring it."

"Good."

Rin turned toward the door. Then Sol spoke again.

"Rin."

He stopped.

"What?"

Sol hesitated.

"The component from the detector..."

Rin waited.

"It wasn’t only disconnected."

"What do you mean?"

Sol looked at Noctis. Noctis answered.

"The person who removed it modified it."

Rin’s expression became serious.

"Modified it how?"

Sol picked up the component.

"They changed the recording pattern."

Rin stared.

"Why?"

"We don’t know."

"Can you reverse it?"

Sol nodded.

"Probably."

Rin thought.

"Do it."

Sol smiled.

"Already started."

Rin nodded. Then left. The afternoon finally arrived.

Rin and Kaelith left the fortress through the eastern gate.

No System. No detector. No ancient records. Just the two of them.

Rin looked around.

"It feels strange."

Kaelith smiled.

"What?"

"Leaving without investigating something."

"You don’t have to investigate everything."

"I know."

Rin sighed.

"I’m trying."

"You are."

They walked along a small road leading away from the fortress.

The weather was pleasant. The forest was still visible in the distance, but they weren’t going there. For once, they were going somewhere simply because they wanted to.

Rin looked at Kaelith.

"So where are we going?"

"You said you wanted somewhere quiet."

"Yes."

"I know a place."

"Should I be worried?"

"No."

"That’s exactly what someone suspicious would say."

Kaelith laughed.

"You worry too much."

"Apparently that’s my personality."

They eventually reached a small hill overlooking a lake.

Rin stopped.

The view was beautiful. The water reflected the afternoon sky.

A few birds flew over the distant trees. There was no ancient magic.

No strange symbols. No hidden doors. Rin smiled.

"This is perfect."

Kaelith sat beneath a large tree. Rin joined him.

For several minutes, neither spoke. Then Rin leaned back.

"This is nice."

"I told you."

"Don’t become smug."

Kaelith laughed. Rin looked toward the lake.

"I can’t remember the last time I did something like this."

"Something like what?"

"Nothing."

Kaelith looked at him.

"Exactly."

Rin smiled.

"Just...nothing."

Kaelith nodded.

"Then maybe we should do it more often."

Rin looked at him.

"Maybe."

The System appeared.

[MISSION PROGRESS: EXCELLENT.]

Rin immediately groaned.

"Don’t ruin this."

[SYSTEM WILL REMAIN SILENT.]

Rin stared.

"Really?"

[YES.]

A pause.

[FOR FIVE MINUTES.]

Rin burst out laughing. Kaelith laughed too.

"Your System is terrible."

"I know."

[SYSTEM HAS HEARD THAT.]

"Good."

The five minutes passed. The System remained silent.

Rin was impressed. Then Kaelith spoke.

"Can I ask you something?"

Rin nodded.

"Of course."

"When you think about your past..."

Rin became quiet.

"...does it frighten you?"

Rin considered the question.

"Sometimes."

Kaelith waited.

"But not because I think the past will hurt me."

"Then why?"

"Because I don’t know how much of me is still there."

Kaelith looked at him. Rin continued.

"I’ve lived so many lives. I’ve forgotten things. I’ve lost things. I’ve become someone different."

He looked down at his hands.

"Sometimes I wonder if the person I was is even still part of me."

Kaelith was quiet for a moment. Then he said:

"I think he is."

Rin looked at him.

"How can you know?"

"I don’t."

Kaelith smiled.

"But I know you."

Rin’s expression softened.

"And?"

"And you’re still you."

Rin smiled.

"That’s a surprisingly good answer."

"I have those occasionally."

Rin laughed. They stayed there until the afternoon light began to fade.

Nothing extraordinary happened. And that was exactly what made it special.

When they finally stood to leave, Rin looked toward the lake one last time.

"Thank you."

Kaelith smiled.

"For the date?"

"For reminding me that my life isn’t only about finding answers."

Kaelith nodded.

"Good."

They started walking back. After a while, Rin reached for Kaelith’s hand.

Kaelith took it naturally. The System appeared.

[PROPER DATE COMPLETE.]

Rin smiled.

"Finally."

[REWARD: ROMANTIC DEVELOPMENT +1%.]

Rin waited. Nothing else appeared. He blinked.

"That’s it?"

[YES.]

Rin smiled.

"You’re learning."

[SYSTEM HAS AN ADDITIONAL OBSERVATION.]

Rin’s smile disappeared.

"What?"

[HOST APPEARS HAPPY.]

Rin looked at Kaelith. Then back at the empty air.

"Maybe."

[SYSTEM IS PLEASED.]

Rin laughed softly. They returned to the fortress just as the sun disappeared. The moment they entered the main hall, Ji-ho appeared.

"There you are!"

Rin looked at him.

"What?"

Ji-ho pointed at him.

"Sol needs you."

Rin sighed.

"Of course he does."

Kaelith laughed.

"You had your afternoon."

"Apparently fate has decided it was enough."

They entered the workshop. Sol was waiting.

Noctis stood beside him. Aiden was there too. The modified detector component rested on the table.

Rin approached.

"Did you fix it?"

Sol nodded.

"Yes."

"And?"

Sol activated it. The projection appeared. The familiar heartbeat-like pattern returned.

But this time, something was different. A second mark appeared beneath it.

A small number.

11:18

Rin stared.

Noctis spoke quietly.

"It wasn’t in the original recording."

Rin’s smile disappeared.

"Then where did it come from?"

Sol shook his head.

"We don’t know."

Aiden stepped closer. The moment he saw the number, his expression changed.

Ji-ho noticed.

"Aiden?"

Aiden didn’t answer. He stared at the projection. Then quietly whispered:

"That’s when we left."

Rin turned.

"What?"

Aiden looked at him.

"The room."

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"The clock."

He swallowed.

"Someone wasn’t waiting for us at 11:17."

Rin frowned.

"Then what?"

Aiden looked at the number.

"They were waiting for us at 11:18."

Silence filled the workshop. Rin stared at the projection. The mystery had shifted again.

Not by much. Just one minute. But one minute was enough.

Because now they knew something important. The clock hadn’t been counting down.

It had been counting toward something.

And whatever was supposed to happen at 11:18... hadn’t happened yet.

Rin slowly looked toward the dark window.

The forest was quiet.The fortress was safe.

Everything seemed normal. But somewhere beyond what they could see, something had been waiting for that exact minute.

And now it knew Rin had found it. Rin took a slow breath.

"Tomorrow."

Kaelith looked at him. Rin smiled faintly.

"Tomorrow, we investigate."

And this time... nobody argued.
