The BL System Won't Let Me Rest!

Chapter 53: The Promise Beneath the Stars

  • Next Chapter

Morning came quietly. Rin woke before the fortress bells.

For a moment, he didn’t remember where he was, then he felt the warmth beside him.

Kaelith was still sitting in the chair near the balcony. He had kept his promise. Rin stared at him.

The Demon General had fallen asleep sometime during the night, his head resting against the back of the chair. His black hair had fallen across his face, hiding part of his eyes.

Rin smiled. He hadn’t expected him to actually stay, he carefully stood, trying not to wake him. Unfortunately, the floor betrayed him.

A small creak echoed through the room. Kaelith opened his eyes immediately.

"You’re awake."

Rin jumped.

"You weren’t asleep?"

"I was."

"Then how did you hear that?"

"I’m a demon general."

"That isn’t an explanation."

"It works."

Rin laughed quietly. Kaelith stood and stretched.

"You should eat."

"You sound like my mother."

"I’ll take that as an insult."

"It’s not."

Kaelith looked at him. Rin smiled.

"Thank you for staying."

Kaelith’s expression softened.

"You asked me to."

"Still."

"You don’t have to thank me every time someone chooses to stay."

Rin became quiet. The sentence touched something inside him. Someone had promised to protect his choice.

Someone had stayed and perhaps that was why Kaelith’s words felt strangely important.

Rin looked away.

"Let’s go before Sol starts complaining."

"He already started."

"What?"

Kaelith opened the door. Sol was standing outside. Arms crossed. Expression offended.

"I’ve been waiting for fifteen minutes."

Rin blinked.

"You heard us?"

"I heard Kaelith say you should eat."

Sol looked at Kaelith.

"You sound like a worried husband."

Kaelith stared at him. Rin nearly choked.

"Sol!"

"What?"

Kaelith’s ears had turned slightly red. Rin noticed and, unfortunately, that made him laugh.

"Don’t."

Kaelith looked at him.

"Don’t what?"

"Look like that."

"Like what?"

"Embarrassed."

"I’m not."

Rin laughed harder. Sol looked between them.

"I feel like I walked into something."

"You didn’t," Rin said quickly.

Kaelith said nothing. Which somehow made it worse.

Breakfast was surprisingly peaceful, for once, nobody discussed gods, curses, forgotten lives, or ancient kingdoms.

Rin almost enjoyed the silence. Almost. Then Sol placed a piece of bread on his plate.

"Eat."

Rin stared at it.

"I can feed myself."

"I know."

"Then why?"

"Because you forget."

"I don’t."

Sol raised an eyebrow. Rin looked at the untouched plate.

"...Sometimes."

Noctis laughed from across the table. Rin pointed at him.

"Don’t encourage him."

"I wouldn’t dare."

Rin smiled. For a few minutes, everything felt normal. Then a messenger entered the hall.

"General."

Kaelith looked up.

"What is it?"

The soldier bowed.

"We found something in the eastern district."

Kaelith’s expression changed.

"What?"

"A group of civilians discovered an underground chamber."

Rin stopped eating.

"Underground?"

The soldier nodded.

"Under one of the abandoned temples."

Kaelith stood.

"Did anyone enter?"

"One scout."

"And?"

"He hasn’t returned."

The atmosphere changed immediately. Rin put down his fork.

"We should go."

Kaelith looked at him.

"You’re staying here."

"No."

"Rin."

"I said no."

Kaelith frowned.

"It’s dangerous."

"So is everything else."

Rin stood.

"I’ve spent too long being protected from things I need to understand."

Kaelith stared at him. Then sighed.

"I knew you were going to say that."

Rin smiled.

"You know me well."

"Unfortunately."

The eastern district had been abandoned for decades. Old houses stood empty, broken statues lined the streets and at the center was a ruined temple.

Rin recognized the symbol above its entrance. His incomplete divine mark.

AEL—

He stopped.

"No."

Kaelith looked at him.

"What?"

"Nothing."

Rin didn’t explain. Nobody needed to know. The temple was connected to his past.

He could feel it. They descended into the underground chamber. The walls were covered with old paintings.

Most were destroyed but one remained intact.

Rin stopped. A young figure stood at the center.

White robes. Golden wings. A crown of light.

Rin or Aelion but something was wrong.

The figure wasn’t alone. Someone stood beside him. Their face had been scratched away.

Rin stepped closer.

"Who is that?"

Noctis examined the painting.

"I don’t know."

Kaelith looked at the damaged face.

"Someone deliberately destroyed it."

Rin touched the wall. A flash of memory struck him.

A hand. His hand. Holding someone else’s. A voice.

"I choose you."

Rin pulled away. His breathing became unsteady. Kaelith immediately noticed.

"Rin."

"I’m fine."

Kaelith moved closer.

"Don’t force yourself."

Rin shook his head.

"I’m not."

He looked at the painting again.

"Someone stood beside me."

Noctis frowned.

"Can you remember who?"

"No."

Rin stared at the damaged face.

"But I think..."

He stopped. The memory was there. Just beyond reach.

He could feel the person’s presence. Warm. Familiar. Safe.

Not the God not Eryon. Someone else.

And then—

Ding.

Rin froze. The bell sounded inside his mind.

He looked around. Nobody had spoken. Noctis noticed his expression.

"Rin?"

"I’m okay."

The bell had come from the memory itself. That was impossible. Or perhaps... the memory was false.

Rin stared at the painting. Someone had altered it. Someone had removed the face and now his own memory was trying to tell him something, but was it telling him the truth?

He couldn’t know yet. They continued deeper. At the end of the corridor stood a massive stone door. The same symbol was carved into it.

Aelion’s mark. Rin touched it. The door opened. Inside was a small chamber.

There was nothing inside except a stone pedestal and on the pedestal...a single piece of paper.

Rin approached it.

The handwriting was familiar. His own. He picked it up.

The first sentence made his heart stop.

If I am reading this again, then I failed.

Rin stared. He knew that handwriting. It was his but the message wasn’t from his current life.

It was from Aelion. He continued reading.

There are things I cannot trust myself to remember. There are people I cannot allow myself to recognize. And there is one promise I must never forget.

Rin’s fingers tightened around the paper. The next line had been damaged. Only a few words remained.

I chose...

The rest was missing. Rin’s heart raced.

The same phrase. Again.

I chose you.

He looked at the damaged paper.

"Who?"

Nothing. Then a second piece of writing appeared. Fresh ink. As though someone were writing it in front of him.

You already know.

Rin stepped backward.

"No."

The ink continued.

You have known them in every life.

Rin’s breathing stopped. Every life. The person wasn’t connected to only one timeline. They had followed him through his million lives or perhaps...

Rin had followed them. He looked at the others.

Kaelith. Noctis. Sol.

None of them could see the new writing, only him.

Rin folded the paper. He wasn’t going to tell them yet.

The mystery was becoming too dangerous. They returned to the fortress before sunset. Rin remained quiet the entire way.

Kaelith noticed. He waited until they were alone.

"What did you find?"

Rin looked at him.

"Something about my past."

"Bad?"

"I don’t know."

Kaelith nodded. Rin hesitated. Then asked:

"Do you ever feel like you know someone before you’ve actually met them?"

Kaelith thought about it.

"Sometimes."

"What does it mean?"

"I don’t know."

Rin smiled faintly.

"You’re very helpful."

Kaelith smiled back.

"I’m trying."

Rin looked at him and for some reason, he wanted to tell Kaelith everything.

The letter. The painting. The missing face. The strange promise but he couldn’t.

.Instead, he asked:

"Kaelith."

"Hm?"

"If you could choose anything for yourself..."

Kaelith looked at him.

"Anything?"

"Yes."

"What would you choose?"

Kaelith was silent for a long moment. Then he answered:

"Peace."

Rin blinked.

"That’s all?"

"That’s enough."

Rin smiled.

"I think I’d choose freedom."

Kaelith looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because I don’t think anyone should have their choices taken away."

Kaelith’s expression softened.

"Then I hope you get it."

Rin smiled.

"Maybe I already have."

Kaelith looked confused. Rin didn’t explain.

He simply walked beside him. Their shoulders brushed neither moved away.

That night, Rin returned to his room. He placed the damaged paper on the desk.

The missing words were still missing but now there was something else.

A faint golden mark had appeared beneath the final line.

A symbol. Not Aelion. Not the curse. Not the System. Something completely different.

Rin touched it. A memory surfaced. A voice.

"When the time comes, choose freely."

Rin’s eyes widened. The same voice from the ancient memory. The person beside the child.

The person who had promised to protect his choice.

Rin whispered:

"You’re the one."

The memory faded but this time... he knew one thing.

The person who had stood beside him before Aelion wasn’t trying to control him.

They had been trying to protect his freedom.

And somehow...they had disappeared from every memory afterward.

Rin looked at the paper.

"Who erased you?"

The candle flame flickered. The answer didn’t come but the final blank space on the page slowly filled with three words.

ASK THE GOD.

Rin stared at them. He understood. The God knew.

Perhaps not everythingm but enough.

And tomorrow...Rin would ask him.
