The BL System Won't Let Me Rest!

Chapter 52: The Choice I Couldn’t Remember

  • Next Chapter

"I choose you."

The words remained inside Rin’s mind. Then everything disappeared.

The dark room. The rain. The crying child. The woman.

Gone.

Rin opened his eyes. He was back in the library. For several seconds, he didn’t move.

His breathing was uneven. His hands were trembling. He looked around.

The bookshelves were still there. The candles were still burning.

The strange white feather remained on the table. Everything was normal.

Except Rin wasn’t. He pressed a hand against his chest.

"Who did I choose?"

The question came out as a whisper. No answer. Rin closed his eyes again, desperately trying to return to the memory.

Nothing. He couldn’t force it. The harder he tried, the farther it seemed to move.

He opened his eyes.

"Great."

He leaned back against the chair.

"Another memory that gives me one sentence and then disappears."

The feather remained silent. Rin stared at it. The memory had been different from the others.

It hadn’t shown him Aelion. It hadn’t shown him the God. It hadn’t shown him Eryon.

It had shown him something before all of that.

A child. A woman. A choice. And someone who had been important enough for that child to say:

I choose you.

Rin frowned.

"Who were you?"

He didn’t know whether he was asking the woman or the person he had chosen.

Perhaps both. The library door suddenly opened. Rin immediately sat straight.

Kaelith stood there.

His black hair was slightly messy, and the red of his eyes looked darker beneath the dim candlelight.

"You disappeared."

Rin blinked.

"Did I?"

"Yes."

"I was here."

"I noticed."

Rin smiled.

"Then why did you come looking for me?"

Kaelith walked inside.

"Because everyone else is preparing to leave."

"Oh."

Rin looked toward the window. It was already dark.

"I lost track of time."

Kaelith stopped beside the table.

His eyes fell on the feather.

"What is that?"

Rin hesitated.

"Something I found."

"Where?"

"The library."

Kaelith reached toward it. Rin stopped his hand.

"Don’t."

Kaelith looked at him.

"Why?"

"I don’t know what it does."

Kaelith immediately lowered his hand.

"Then don’t touch it either."

Rin smiled.

"You’re very protective."

"Someone has to be."

Rin laughed softly.

"Fair."

Kaelith studied him.

"You were crying."

Rin froze.

"I wasn’t."

"You were."

Rin looked away.

"I was remembering something."

"Something bad?"

"I don’t know."

Kaelith didn’t ask him to explain. Instead, he pulled the chair beside Rin’s and sat down. For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Kaelith quietly said:

"You don’t have to tell me."

Rin looked at him.

"What?"

"Whatever you remembered."

Rin stared.

Kaelith continued:

"You’ve been carrying too many things lately."

Rin smiled faintly.

"You make it sound like I’m carrying the entire world."

"Sometimes you act like you are."

Rin looked down.

"Maybe I don’t know how not to."

Kaelith’s expression softened.

"Then learn."

Rin laughed.

"That’s easier said than done."

"I know."

The silence returned but this one felt comfortable.

Rin glanced at Kaelith.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Yes."

"If you remembered something about your past that changed everything you believed about yourself..."

Kaelith waited.

"...would you be afraid?"

"Yes."

Rin looked surprised. Kaelith continued:

"Being afraid doesn’t mean you stop."

Rin smiled.

"That’s a good answer."

"It’s the honest one."

Rin looked at him for a moment. There was something different about the way Kaelith spoke to him. He never tried to pull information out of him.

Never demanded answers. He simply stayed. Rin appreciated that. More than he wanted to admit.

"Thank you."

Kaelith looked at him.

"For what?"

"For staying."

Kaelith’s eyes softened.

"I told you."

"What?"

"You don’t have to face everything alone."

Rin looked away. His face felt warm. He blamed the candles. Obviously.

Kaelith stood.

"We should go."

Rin nodded. He picked up the feather. Kaelith watched him carefully.

"You’re keeping it?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I think it belongs to me."

Kaelith didn’t question it.

"Then keep it."

They walked toward the door. Rin was still thinking about the memory. He barely noticed when his foot caught on something.

He stumbled. Kaelith immediately caught him by the waist.

Rin froze. Kaelith’s hand remained against his side.

For one second, neither moved. Rin looked up. Kaelith looked down.

Their faces were close. Too close. Rin’s heart suddenly beat faster.

Kaelith seemed to notice. He slowly released him.

"Sorry."

Rin quickly looked away.

"It’s fine."

Neither mentioned it. They continued walking but Rin couldn’t stop thinking about how warm Kaelith’s hand had been. And Kaelith seemed unusually quiet.

The corridor outside the library was almost empty. They walked side by side. Rin finally broke the silence.

"Kaelith."

"Hm?"

"You really didn’t have to catch me."

Kaelith glanced at him.

"You were falling."

"I could have recovered."

"Probably."

Rin smiled.

"Probably?"

"I wasn’t going to risk finding out."

Rin laughed.

"You really are protective."

Kaelith’s expression became serious.

"Yes."

Rin looked at him. Kaelith didn’t look away.

"I am."

Something about the simple answer made Rin’s smile disappear. Not because it frightened him.

Because it felt sincere. Rin looked forward again.

"I don’t mind."

Kaelith’s expression softened.

"Good."

Neither spoke after that but their hands occasionally brushed as they walked.

Neither moved away. When they returned to the main hall, Sol immediately looked up.

"There you are."

Rin smiled.

"Miss me?"

"No."

"You’re terrible at lying."

Sol rolled his eyes.

"You’re annoying."

"That’s better."

Noctis was standing near the entrance. He looked at Rin.

"You found what you were looking for?"

Rin hesitated.

"Not exactly."

Noctis nodded.

"Sometimes the wrong answer is still progress."

Rin smiled.

"You’re getting philosophical too."

"I spend time around you."

"That’s unfortunate."

Noctis laughed. The atmosphere felt almost normal.

Then the System appeared. Only Rin could see it.

[MEMORY FRAGMENT REMAINS ACTIVE.]

Rin’s smile faded. He looked at the screen.

[SECONDARY MEMORY ACCESS AVAILABLE.]

His heart skipped.

Not now. Not here. He closed the interface. Sol noticed his expression.

"Something wrong?"

Rin shook his head.

"No."

The screen disappeared. He wasn’t ready. He needed to be alone. Later that night, Rin sat on the balcony outside his room.

The fortress was quiet. Kaelith had gone to check the guards.

Sol was asleep. Noctis had disappeared somewhere. Rin held the feather between his fingers.

He stared at it.

"Show me."

Nothing happened.

"Please."

Still nothing.

Rin sighed.

"Fine."

He placed it on the balcony railing.

"I’ll wait."

Minutes passed.

Then—

golden light appeared.

Rin immediately sat upright. The memory returned.

But this time...he wasn’t the child.

He was watching from somewhere else. He saw the woman kneeling beside the child.

The child was crying. The woman touched his forehead. Then someone entered the room.

Rin couldn’t see their face but the child looked up.

And smiled. The stranger knelt. The child reached toward them.

Then the memory changed. Rin heard the child’s voice.

"I choose you."

The stranger answered:

"Then I will protect your choice."

Rin’s eyes widened. The memory shattered.

He returned to the balcony. His breathing was heavy.

"Protect my choice..."

He looked at the feather. The phrase felt important.

Not romantic. Not about love. It was a promise.

Someone had promised to protect the child’s freedom. Someone had known what Rin would become. Someone had been there before Aelion.

Rin slowly stood. Then he heard footsteps behind him. He turned. Was Kaelith.

"You should be sleeping."

Rin smiled faintly.

"So should you."

"I was checking the courtyard."

"And now?"

Kaelith walked closer.

"Now I’m checking on you."

Rin looked down.

"I’m fine."

Kaelith stopped beside him.

"You’re thinking about the memory."

Rin nodded.

"Yes."

"Did you learn anything?"

Rin looked at the stars.

"Someone promised to protect my choice."

Kaelith was quiet.

"Do you know who?"

"No."

"Do you want to?"

"Yes."

Kaelith looked at him.

"Then you’ll find out."

Rin smiled.

"You make everything sound easy."

"No."

Kaelith looked toward the night sky.

"I just believe you’ll find the answer."

Rin looked at him. For a moment, neither spoke. Then Rin quietly leaned his shoulder against Kaelith’s.

Just slightly. Almost unconsciously. Kaelith became still but he didn’t move away.

Rin closed his eyes.

"I think I’m tired."

"You should sleep."

"I know."

Neither moved. After a while, Kaelith quietly said:

"I’ll stay until you fall asleep."

Rin opened his eyes.

"You don’t have to."

"I know."

Rin smiled.

"Then stay."

Kaelith nodded. So they remained there beneath the stars.

No promises. No confessions. Nothing dramatic. Just two people sitting together in the quiet.

And for the first time since Rin’s memories had begun returning... he wasn’t afraid of what tomorrow might bring.

He had questions. Too many but now he had something else.

People who stayed.

And perhaps...that was the first choice he had made in this life that belonged entirely to him.
