Chapter 32: The Sin of Loving a Demon

The stairs seemed to have no end.

Rin had stopped counting the steps somewhere around three hundred.

At first, he had tried.

Then he had decided that counting mysterious magical stairs while being chased by an angry God was probably not the best use of his remaining brain cells.

So now he simply walked. Beside him, Noctis remained silent.

His long silver hair brushed against his back with every step, catching the faint golden light that leaked through the cracks in the walls.

Sol walked on Rin’s other side. Aiden followed behind them. Nobody spoke.

Not because there was nothing to say. There was too much.

Rin still couldn’t stop thinking about what Noctis had told him.

You told me to make you fall in love with me again.

That sentence had been haunting him since they left the Archive.

He looked at Noctis.

"What?"

Rin immediately looked away.

"Nothing."

"You’ve been staring at me for five minutes."

"I have not."

"You have."

"I was thinking."

"About me?"

"...Maybe."

Noctis raised an eyebrow. Rin sighed.

"You’re very annoying."

A small smile appeared on Noctis’s face.

"You’ve said that before."

"Apparently I have excellent consistency."

Sol snorted.

"You two are unbearable."

Rin looked at him.

"You’ve been listening this entire time?"

"I literally live in your head."

"Right."

"Privacy isn’t really part of my job description."

Rin shook his head. For a moment, the darkness felt less frightening. Then Noctis stopped. Rin almost walked into him.

"What?"

Noctis didn’t answer. He was staring at the wall. There was something carved into it.

A symbol. A circle surrounded by four broken lines. Sol’s expression changed.

"I know that symbol."

Rin frowned.

"From where?"

"The first System interface."

Rin blinked.

"What?"

Sol approached the wall. His fingers hovered above the symbol without touching it.

"This was the original mark of the World."

Aiden nodded.

"It means choice."

Rin looked at the symbol.

"Choice?"

"Before the God took control," Aiden explained, "the World used this mark to identify places where reality could change."

Rin looked around.

"So this place..."

"Is one of those places."

Noctis’s eyes narrowed.

"Then we aren’t going to the God."

Aiden looked at him.

"No."

"We’re going somewhere else."

Aiden nodded.

"We’re going to the place where the God first broke the rules."

Rin stared.

"That’s somehow worse."

Sol smiled.

"Probably."

"You’re supposed to reassure me."

"I’ve never been good at that."

"I noticed."

They continued. Eventually, the stairs ended. A massive door stood before them.

It was black. No handles. No locks. Only one sentence carved across its surface.

Rin stepped closer. He read it aloud.

"Only the one who remembers love may enter."

Rin stared.

"...That’s dramatic."

Sol shrugged.

"The First Rin had a flair for theatrics."

"You knew him."

"I was his little brother."

"Right."

Rin placed his hand against the door. Nothing happened. He frowned.

"Maybe I’m doing it wrong."

Noctis stepped forward. He placed his hand beside Rin’s. Still nothing.

Then Sol placed his hand against the door. Nothing. Aiden tried. Nothing. Rin sighed.

"Great."

"We’re stuck."

Noctis looked at the inscription.

"Remember love."

Rin glanced at him.

"What does that even mean?"

Noctis didn’t answer. Instead, he stepped closer. His silver hair fell over his shoulder. His eyes met Rin’s.

"You."

Rin blinked.

"Me?"

"Remember."

"Remember what?"

"The first time."

Rin’s heart began pounding.

"What first time?"

Noctis lifted his hand. He gently touched Rin’s cheek. And suddenly—

The world disappeared. Rin was standing in a field. The sky was blue.

Flowers stretched endlessly into the distance. He looked down at himself.

He was younger. Much younger. Perhaps twenty.

He wore simple black clothing. There was no armor.

No System. No magic. No war.

Someone stood several meters away.

Long silver hair.

Red eyes.

A smile.

Noctis.

But not the Noctis Rin knew now. This Noctis looked younger.

Softer. Almost human. Rin stared.

"You’re..."

Noctis smiled.

"You finally came."

Rin looked around.

"Where are we?"

"Our place."

"Our?"

Noctis nodded.

"You don’t remember?"

Rin frowned.

"No."

Noctis’s smile faded.

"Not yet."

He walked closer.

"Come here."

Rin obeyed. Noctis reached into his pocket. He pulled out the silver pendant. The same one Rin had found in the Archive. He held it out.

"You promised."

Rin stared.

"Promised what?"

"That you would give this back to me."

Rin laughed.

"I don’t remember taking it."

"You stole it."

"I did not."

"You did."

"Proof?"

Noctis smiled.

"You kissed me afterward."

Rin’s face immediately turned red.

"I WHAT?"

Noctis laughed. The sound was warm. Real. Nothing like the tortured expression Rin had seen on him across the timelines. Rin stared.

"You’re serious."

"Very."

"Why would I kiss you?"

Noctis’s smile slowly faded.

"Because you loved me."

Silence. The memory shifted. They were sitting beneath a tree.

Rin was leaning against Noctis’s shoulder. Noctis was reading something. Rin looked bored.

"What are you reading?"

"History."

"Why?"

"Because I want to understand humans."

"That’s unfortunate."

"Why?"

"Humans are terrible."

Noctis looked at him.

"You are human."

"Exactly."

Noctis laughed. Rin smiled. Then the memory shifted again. A palace.

People shouting. Soldiers. A crowd. Rin stood before them. Noctis stood beside him.

A man wearing a golden crown pointed toward Noctis.

"You dare bring a demon into the kingdom?"

Rin stepped forward.

"He’s not a monster."

"He is a demon."

"He’s Noctis."

The crowd erupted. The king’s expression hardened.

"You would choose him?"

Rin looked at Noctis. Then back at the king.

"Yes."

The memory froze. A voice filled the sky.

"That was your sin."

Rin looked upward. The God appeared. Not as a monstrous creature.

As a beautiful man. Golden eyes. White robes. A calm smile. He looked almost kind. That made him worse. Rin stared.

"What sin?"

The God looked at Noctis.

"Love."

Rin’s fists clenched.

"That’s not a sin."

"It was not yours to choose."

"Why?"

"Because he is a demon."

Noctis stepped forward. The God raised one hand. Noctis was thrown backward.

"NOCTIS!"

Rin rushed toward him. The God looked at Rin.

"You were meant to be the bridge between worlds."

Rin froze.

"A human who would unite humanity. But instead..."

The God smiled.

"You chose him."

Rin stood.

"Yes."

"Again and again."

"What?"

The God walked closer.

"Even when I gave you different lives."

The world around them changed. Rin saw another timeline. He was older. Noctis was beside him.

Another. They were children.

Another. They were enemies.

Another. They were strangers.

Another. Rin was a prince. Noctis was a prisoner.

Another. Rin was a soldier. Noctis was the enemy general.

Another. They were old.

Another. They were young.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Every time... They found each other. Every time... They chose each other.

The God watched. And every time... He reset the world. Rin’s stomach turned.

"How many?"

The God smiled.

"Too many to count."

Rin’s voice shook.

"You killed me."

"Correct."

"Every time?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because you refused to learn."

Rin stared at him.

"Learn what?"

"That some love is forbidden."

Noctis stepped forward.

"Then why did you allow us to meet?"

The God looked at him.

"Because I wanted you to suffer."

Noctis froze. The God smiled.

"You remember everything, don’t you?"

Noctis’s expression became cold.

"Yes."

"Every life."

"Yes."

"Every death."

"Yes."

"Every time he loved someone else."

Noctis said nothing. The God continued.

"Every time Rin was reborn, I changed the circumstances."

Rin’s heart sank.

"You..."

The God looked at him.

"I made him remember."

Rin turned toward Noctis.

"No."

Noctis closed his eyes. The God continued.

"I made him watch."

Noctis’s fists clenched.

"You fell in love with princes."

The memory changed. Rin with a prince. Noctis watching from afar.

"You fell in love with knights."

Another memory. Rin laughing with a holy knight. Noctis watching.

"You fell in love with kings."

Another. Rin holding someone’s hand. Noctis standing in the rain.

"And sometimes..."

The God smiled.

"...you loved demons who were not him."

Noctis’s face remained emotionless. But his eyes betrayed him. Rin suddenly understood.

"All this time..."

He whispered.

"You remembered everything."

Noctis nodded.

"And I forgot."

"Yes."

"You watched me fall in love with other people."

"Yes."

"And every time I died..."

Noctis’s voice cracked.

"I remembered."

Rin looked at him. Noctis finally broke. Tears ran down his face.

"I remembered the first time."

"The first kiss."

"The first promise."

"The first time you called me yours."

He laughed bitterly.

"And then I had to watch you forget."

Rin’s chest hurt.

"Noctis..."

"I tried to stop loving you."

Noctis looked at him.

"I couldn’t."

The God watched them.

"Do you understand now?"

Rin turned.

"What?"

"This is your punishment."

Rin frowned.

"My punishment?"

"For choosing what should never have been chosen."

Rin looked at Noctis. Then at the God.

"You punished him too."

"Of course."

"Why?"

"Because he encouraged you."

The God raised his hand.

"And Sol."

Rin froze. The memory changed. Sol. A much younger Sol. Standing beside Rin. Trying to protect him. The God looked at the boy.

"He was the first to rebel."

Sol’s younger self screamed.

"Leave my brother alone!"

The God smiled.

"Then you will forget him."

Black magic wrapped around Sol. Rin screamed.

"STOP!"

The memory shattered. Rin fell to his knees.

"No..."

Sol’s voice echoed.

"Big brother..."

Rin covered his face. The God looked down.

"You see?"

"You were never supposed to remember."

Rin slowly stood. His eyes were filled with tears.

"But I do."

The God smiled.

"Only temporarily."

Rin shook his head.

"No."

He looked at Noctis. Then Sol.

"No."

The God frowned. Rin’s voice became stronger.

"You made one mistake."

"What?"

"You thought love was something you could control."

The God stared. Rin stepped forward.

"You thought if you erased my memories, I would become someone else."

He pointed toward Noctis.

"But every timeline..."

Rin smiled.

"...I still found him."

The God said nothing. Rin continued.

"And every timeline..."

He looked toward Sol.

"...I still protected my brother."

The golden symbol beneath them began glowing. The God took a step backward. Rin noticed.

"You are afraid."

The God smiled.

"No."

"You are."

The World began awakening. The entire chamber shook. A voice echoed through the darkness.

Not the God. Not Sol. Not Noctis. Something older.

CHOICE HAS BEEN RESTORED.

The God turned.

"No."

The voice continued.

LOVE CANNOT BE CLASSIFIED AS ERROR.

"No!"

The God raised his hand. Power exploded through the chamber. The memory shattered.

Rin woke on the stone floor.

He was breathing heavily. Noctis was beside him.

Sol was kneeling nearby. Aiden stood at the doorway. The black door was gone.

Beyond it was a massive chamber.

At the center...

A throne.

Empty.

Rin slowly stood.

"That’s where he sat?"

Noctis looked at him.

"Yes."

"The God?"

"Yes."

Rin stared at the empty throne.

"He isn’t the creator."

"No."

"He’s a prisoner."

Noctis’s expression changed.

"Yes."

Rin turned.

"What?"

Sol looked horrified. Aiden closed his eyes.

"The God didn’t create the world."

"He was created by it."

Rin’s mind raced.

"Then why does he have so much power?"

Aiden answered quietly.

"Because the World gave him a purpose."

"What purpose?"

"To protect reality."

Rin stared.

"And he became obsessed with protecting it."

Sol nodded.

"He stopped seeing people as people."

Aiden looked toward the throne.

"He began seeing them as variables."

Rin slowly understood.

"And the timelines..."

"His attempts to correct the world."

"By killing me."

"Yes."

"And Noctis?"

"His greatest anomaly."

Rin looked at Noctis. Noctis’s silver hair moved in the cold wind.

"Because you loved him."

Noctis nodded.

"Because I loved you."

Rin looked down. For a moment, nobody spoke. Then Rin smiled.

Small. Certain.

"Then we know what to do."

Sol raised an eyebrow.

"What?"

"Break the curse."

Aiden shook his head.

"That isn’t possible."

Rin looked at him.

"You said that before."

"Because it isn’t."

"No."

Rin stepped forward.

"You’ve been thinking like the God."

Aiden froze. Rin pointed toward the empty throne.

"Trying to destroy the system."

Then toward Sol.

"Trying to destroy the curse."

Then toward Noctis.

"Trying to destroy the timeline."

He smiled.

"But that’s not what we need."

Noctis looked at him.

"What do we need?"

Rin answered:

"Choice."

The word echoed. The World responded.

The symbol beneath Rin’s feet began shining. Sol’s eyes widened.

"Rin..."

"What?"

"The System."

"What about it?"

"It changed."

A blue window appeared. But this time... There were no missions.

No romantic objectives. No death penalties. No probability calculations. Only one message.

[SYSTEM CORE REWRITTEN.]

Another line appeared.

[PRIMARY FUNCTION: PROTECT HOST.]

Then another.

[SECONDARY FUNCTION: SUPPORT HOST’S CHOICES.]

Sol stared. Rin looked at him.

"You did this?"

Sol shook his head.

"No."

"Then who did?"

Sol slowly smiled.

"The World."

A final message appeared.

[NEW OBJECTIVE: LET RIN CHOOSE.]

Rin laughed.

After everything... After the deaths. The timelines. The curses. The God. The System. The World.

The answer had been unbelievably simple.

For the first time...

Nobody was telling him who to love. Nobody was telling him who to save. Nobody was telling him who he was supposed to become.

He could choose. Rin looked toward Noctis.

Then toward Sol. Then toward the fortress far beyond the mountains.

Toward Kaelith. His heart hurt. Because he knew now that the God had deliberately placed people in his path.

But he also knew something else.

Manipulation did not make feelings false. The choices were still his. Rin smiled.

"Let’s go home."

Noctis looked at him.

"Which home?"

Rin paused. Then laughed.

"That’s a problem for another day."

Sol grinned.

"Classic big brother."

Aiden sighed.

"I already regret following you."

Rin started walking.

"Then stop following me."

Aiden immediately followed.

"I can’t."

"Why?"

"Because apparently that’s my punishment."

Rin laughed.

Behind them...

The empty throne remained.

But for the first time in countless centuries...

A crack appeared across it.

And somewhere deep within the darkness...

The God opened his eyes. He had lost control of the story.

But he wasn’t defeated. Not yet. His voice echoed through the empty chamber.

"If you choose him again..."

A pause.

"...I will make you watch him die."

The darkness swallowed his words.

But this time... The World heard him.

And the World answered.

"Then let them choose."
