The BL System Won't Let Me Rest!

Chapter 31: The Memory He Was Never Supposed to Keep

  • Next Chapter

For the first time since Rin had entered this world...

He remembered his brother. Not completely. Not clearly. But enough.

A small house.

A summer afternoon.

A wooden sword.

A boy with messy dark hair running after him.

Big brother! Wait!

Rin closed his eyes. The memory was warm. Painfully warm.

Then another memory came.

Rain.

A broken window. Sol crying. Rin holding his little brother’s hand.

"Don’t be scared."

Then another.

Fire.

Darkness.

Someone screaming his name.

"RUN!"

Rin’s eyes snapped open. He was back inside the Archive. The golden light was still surrounding them.

Noctis stood beside him. Sol was on his other side. And somewhere beyond the golden barrier...

The God was silent. Too silent. Rin slowly looked at Sol.

"You were really my little brother."

Sol smiled weakly.

"I told you I was annoying."

"You were."

"I still am."

"Very."

"Good."

Rin frowned.

"Why are you smiling?"

Sol shrugged.

"Because you remembered."

Rin’s chest tightened.

"You’ve been waiting for me to remember."

"Yes."

"For how long?"

Sol’s smile disappeared.

"Long enough to forget what normal feels like."

Rin didn’t know how to respond. So instead... He hugged him again. Sol froze. Then laughed softly.

"You really like hugging people now."

"Shut up."

"You weren’t this affectionate before."

"I literally just remembered having a little brother."

"Fair."

Noctis looked away. Rin noticed.

"Noctis."

He turned.

"What?"

"You’re crying."

"I’m not."

"You are."

Noctis touched his face. His fingers came away wet. He stared at them.

"...Interesting."

Rin almost laughed.

"You didn’t even notice."

"No."

Rin stepped toward him. Noctis immediately looked away.

"Don’t."

"Why?"

"I don’t know what to do."

"With what?"

"Being happy."

The answer silenced Rin. Noctis lowered his head.

"I’ve spent too long expecting everything to disappear."

Rin’s expression softened. He reached out. Noctis looked at his hand. Then took it.

This time... He didn’t hesitate. The golden barrier suddenly flickered. Sol’s expression changed.

"That’s enough."

Rin looked at him.

"What?"

"We have to leave."

"Why?"

Sol looked toward the darkness.

"The God isn’t attacking."

"That’s good."

"No."

Sol’s eyes narrowed.

"That’s terrible."

Rin’s stomach sank.

"Why?"

"Because he’s waiting."

"For what?"

"For us to lower our guard."

Noctis immediately turned toward the exit.

"He’s right."

Rin sighed.

"Of course he is."

They started moving. But after only a few steps... Rin stopped.

"Wait."

Sol turned.

"What?"

Rin pointed toward the Archive.

One of the golden crystals was glowing brighter than the others. Inside it... A young Rin stood alone. He looked perhaps sixteen. Beside him stood Sol. But Sol was younger too.

Much younger. They were standing beneath a tree. Rin was holding something.

A small silver pendant. Sol reached for it. Rin pulled it away.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because it’s mine."

"But you said I could have it!"

"I said you could borrow it."

"That’s the same thing."

"No, it isn’t."

Sol crossed his arms.

"You’re mean."

Rin laughed.

"You’re annoying."

"You love me."

Rin’s expression softened.

"Unfortunately."

Sol grinned.

"I knew it."

The crystal flickered. The memory changed. The boys were older. Rin was perhaps nineteen. Sol around sixteen.

They stood in a ruined temple. Someone was waiting for them.

A tall figure. Their face was hidden. Rin stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

The figure answered:

"The one who keeps this world alive."

Rin frowned.

"You mean the God?"

"No."

The memory ended.

Rin stared.

"Who was that?"

Sol looked disturbed.

"I don’t know."

Noctis stepped closer.

"I do."

Both turned toward him. Noctis looked at the crystal.

"The World."

Rin frowned.

"The World has a person?"

"Not exactly."

"Then what did we see?"

"A vessel."

Rin stared.

"A vessel for the World?"

Noctis nodded.

"It could speak through certain people."

"Who?"

Noctis’s expression darkened.

"That is what we need to find out."

Sol looked toward the ceiling.

"Not here."

Rin frowned.

"Why?"

The answer came from somewhere behind them.

"Because this place is dying."

All three turned. Aiden stood in the doorway. Rin stared.

"You!"

Aiden raised both hands.

"I come in peace."

"You have a terrible habit of appearing at dramatic moments."

"I’ve been told."

Noctis immediately drew his weapon. Aiden didn’t move.

"I don’t want to fight."

Sol stepped forward.

"Why are you here?"

Aiden looked at him.

"I felt the Archive awaken."

"You shouldn’t be able to feel it."

"No."

Aiden smiled faintly.

"But I can."

Rin narrowed his eyes.

"Who are you?"

Aiden looked at him. For a moment... Something strange crossed his face. Recognition. Sadness. Then it disappeared.

"I’m someone who has been trying to keep you alive."

Rin sighed.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

Aiden’s eyes moved toward Sol.

"You’re remembering."

Sol stiffened.

"Yes."

Aiden’s expression became serious.

"Then we are out of time."

Rin groaned.

"Why does everyone keep saying that?"

"Because it’s true."

Aiden pointed toward the ceiling.

"Look."

The golden light above them was turning black.

The God was coming. Again. But this time...

Something else was coming too. A deep rumbling echoed through the Archive.

The World.

Rin could feel it.

Not as a voice. As a heartbeat.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

The entire chamber pulsed. Sol’s eyes widened.

"The World is awake."

Noctis looked toward the exit.

"Then we leave."

Aiden shook his head.

"Not yet."

"What?"

"We need to go deeper."

Rin stared at him.

"Deeper?"

"Yes."

"Into the Archive?"

"Below it."

Aiden pointed toward the floor.

"There is another chamber."

Sol frowned.

"I’ve never seen it."

"Because you weren’t supposed to."

Rin crossed his arms.

"This is becoming a pattern."

Aiden smiled.

"The first Rin sealed it."

Rin’s expression changed.

"Why?"

"Because he knew one day you’d return."

Silence. Rin looked at Sol. Then Noctis. Then the floor.

"Open it."

Aiden nodded. He walked to the center of the chamber. He placed his hand against the ground. Nothing happened. He looked at Rin.

"Your blood."

Rin sighed.

"Of course."

He cut his palm. Sol immediately grabbed his wrist.

"Don’t."

Rin looked at him.

"It’s just blood."

"No."

Sol’s expression was serious.

"The curse is reacting to your blood."

Rin frowned.

"What curse?"

Sol didn’t answer. Aiden did.

"The same curse that was placed on the First Rin."

Rin froze.

"I have a curse?"

Aiden nodded.

"Yes."

"Since when?"

"Since birth."

Rin stared at his hand.

"But I was born on Earth."

"That body was."

Rin’s heart stopped.

"My soul..."

Aiden nodded.

"Wasn’t."

Noctis closed his eyes. Sol looked away. Rin whispered:

"So when I died..."

"You didn’t begin."

Aiden’s voice was quiet.

"You returned."

The floor beneath them opened. A staircase appeared.

Dark. Ancient. Cold air rushed upward. Rin stared into the darkness.

"What’s down there?"

Aiden answered:

"The beginning."

They descended. No one spoke. The staircase seemed endless. Rin walked beside Noctis. Sol followed closely.

Aiden remained behind them. After several minutes, Rin whispered:

"Sol."

"Yes?"

"Are you scared?"

"Absolutely."

Rin blinked.

"You are?"

"Yes."

"Of what?"

Sol looked down.

"Remembering everything."

Rin was silent.

"Why?"

"Because I don’t know what I’ll become if I remember."

Rin stopped walking. Sol stopped too. Rin turned.

"You’re still my brother."

Sol looked at him.

"Even if you remember everything."

Rin smiled.

"Even if you become more annoying."

Sol laughed.

"That’s impossible."

"Challenge accepted."

Noctis smiled faintly. Then suddenly... He stopped. Rin looked back.

"What?"

Noctis was staring at the wall. A carving. Two boys. Standing beneath a tree.

One held a sword. The other held a pendant.

Rin stepped closer. The silver pendant. The same one from the memory.

Rin touched the carving. A hidden compartment opened. Inside was a small silver pendant.

Rin stared.

"No..."

Sol walked closer. His expression collapsed.

"I know that."

Rin picked it up. The moment it touched his palm—

Pain exploded through his mind. He screamed.

Noctis caught him.

"Rin!"

Images flooded his mind.

The First Timeline.

The house. His parents. Sol. Noctis. The God. The World. War. Death.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Rin saw himself standing before the God. Blood covering his clothes. Sol behind him.

Noctis beside him. And Rin was smiling. The God said:

"You cannot win."

Rin answered:

"I’m not trying to win."

The God frowned.

"Then what are you doing?"

Rin smiled.

"I’m giving them a future."

The vision changed. Rin saw Sol. The younger boy was crying.

"Big brother!"

Rin placed the silver pendant around Sol’s neck.

"Listen to me. Whatever happens... Don’t forget me."

Sol shook his head.

"I won’t."

Rin smiled.

"You will."

Then—

The World appeared.

A vast presence. Not human. Not divine. Something older. Something enormous.

It reached toward Sol. The God attacked. Rin stepped between them.

The world exploded. Rin died. Sol screamed. Noctis screamed.

The timeline shattered.

Then—

A voice. The World.

"I will save what remains."

Sol’s body began glowing. His memories disappeared. His human form changed. The System was born.

Rin was sent away.

Earth. A new life. A new body. A new beginning.

The God watched. And whispered:

"You will never remember."

The vision ended. Rin collapsed. Noctis caught him. Sol dropped to his knees. His hands were shaking violently.

"I remember."

Rin looked at him. Sol was crying.

"I remember everything."

Rin’s heart broke.

"What happened?"

Sol laughed through his tears.

"You died for me."

Rin stared.

"No."

"Yes."

"No."

"You told me to run."

"I..."

"You knew the God would come after me."

Sol covered his face.

"You sacrificed yourself."

Rin slowly reached toward him.

"Sol."

Sol looked up.

"I hated you."

Rin froze.

"What?"

Sol’s voice broke.

"For centuries... I hated you. Because you left me."

Rin’s eyes filled with tears.

"But then..."

Sol smiled.

"I remembered. You didn’t leave me. You saved me."

Rin pulled him into a hug.

"I’m sorry."

Sol shook his head.

"No."

"I’m sorry."

"No."

"Sol—"

"You came back."

Sol held him tightly.

"That’s all that matters."

Noctis stood nearby. Silent. Tears in his eyes. Rin looked toward him.

"Noctis."

He walked over. Rin reached out. Noctis took his hand.

"I remember too."

Rin swallowed.

"What?"

"The last thing you said to me."

"What did I say?"

Noctis smiled.

"You told me..."

He looked directly into Rin’s eyes.

"If I forget you... Make me fall in love with you again."

Rin stared. The words echoed through him.

Then—

A distant explosion shook the chamber.

Aiden looked upward.

"The God has entered the Archive."

Sol stood.

"Then we don’t have much time."

Rin looked at the pendant in his hand.

"What does this do?"

Aiden stared at it.

"That..."

His expression changed.

"...is the key."

"To what?"

Aiden looked at the darkness ahead.

"The original world."

Rin’s heart began pounding.

"The place where the first timeline began?"

"No."

Aiden shook his head.

"The place where the God was born."

Silence. Rin looked at Sol. Sol looked at Noctis. Noctis tightened his grip. Rin smiled.

"Then I guess we’re going there."

Aiden frowned.

"You don’t understand."

Rin shrugged.

"I rarely do."

Sol laughed.

"He’s got a point."

Aiden sighed.

"You’re both impossible."

Rin looked ahead. For the first time... He wasn’t afraid of the unknown. He had spent so long trying to survive the story.

Now he finally understood. He wasn’t trapped inside the story.

He was one of the people who could change it. And he wasn’t alone.

His brother was beside him. Noctis held his hand.

And somewhere behind them... Kaelith was still fighting.

Rin turned toward the stairs.

"We’re going back."

Noctis raised an eyebrow.

"To the fortress?"

"Yes."

Sol frowned.

"Why?"

Rin smiled.

"Because Kaelith is probably destroying half the fortress looking for me."

Aiden stared.

"That’s your concern?"

Rin nodded.

"Yes."

Sol laughed.

"Still the same."

Rin looked at him.

"What?"

Sol smiled.

"You always run toward the people you love."

Rin went quiet. Then smiled.

"Maybe that’s why the God never understood me."

Above them...

The Archive shook. The God had arrived.

But this time... Rin wasn’t running away.

He was going back. And for the first time in countless timelines...

The future was waiting for him.
