The BL System Won't Let Me Rest!
Chapter 30: The Brother Behind the System
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The golden System window remained suspended in the air.
[RIN LEE — STATUS: UNBOUND.]
The words glowed softly.
Not blue.
Not red.
Gold.
Rin stared at them. He had seen countless System notifications since arriving in this world.
Some had been ridiculous. Some had been annoying. Some had threatened his life.
A few had even made him question whether the System secretly hated him.
But this one was different.
It felt... Important. Terrifyingly important.
Rin slowly raised his hand. His fingers passed through the golden letters.
Nothing happened.
"Unbound," he whispered.
Noctis stood beside him, his long silver hair falling over his shoulders.
"Yes."
Rin looked at him.
"You knew this would happen?"
"No."
"That’s reassuring."
"I knew it was possible."
"Less reassuring."
Noctis almost smiled.
Almost. Then Rin noticed Sol.
The System’s human form stood several steps away. He looked exhausted.
The black curse marks covered most of his left arm now, disappearing beneath his sleeve. A few thin lines had reached his jaw.
Rin’s smile disappeared.
"Sol."
Sol looked at him.
"I’m fine."
"You look terrible."
"I prefer the term mysterious."
"You look like someone drew cracks all over you with a permanent marker."
Sol stared at him.
"...That was unnecessarily specific."
"I’m concerned."
"I know."
Rin walked toward him.
Sol immediately stepped backward.
"Don’t."
Rin stopped.
"Why?"
"Because if you touch me while the curse is unstable, it might..."
He didn’t finish.
Rin frowned.
"It might what?"
Sol looked away.
"Nothing."
"Sol."
"Nothing."
"You’re terrible at lying."
"You’re terrible at respecting personal space."
"You’re literally a magical program living in my head."
"Formerly magical."
Rin blinked.
"Formerly?"
Sol sighed.
"Apparently I’m having an identity crisis."
Noctis folded his arms.
"You’ve been having one for thousands of years."
Sol glared at him.
"You weren’t supposed to mention that."
Rin looked between them.
"Wait."
Neither answered.
"Thousands of years?"
Sol looked uncomfortable. Rin pointed at him.
"You told me the curse had been going on for a long time."
"Yes."
"How long?"
Sol hesitated.
"...A while."
"How long is a while?"
"A very long while."
"Sol."
"Several centuries."
Rin stared.
"...You could have just said that."
"I didn’t think it was relevant."
"Centuries of torture aren’t relevant?"
Sol looked down.
"I got used to it."
The humor disappeared. Rin didn’t know what to say. Noctis’s expression darkened.
"He shouldn’t have had to."
Sol gave a small shrug.
"Things happened."
Rin looked at Noctis.
"You knew."
"Some of it."
"How much?"
"Enough."
Rin sighed.
"Everyone knows something except me."
Sol looked at him.
"That’s not true."
Rin raised an eyebrow.
"You don’t know everything either."
Sol smiled faintly.
"Exactly."
Something about that answer made Rin feel strangely better. For once, someone else was just as lost as he was.
Then—
The Archive shook. All three of them looked upward. The golden crystals floating above them began to flicker.
One by one, their lights went dark. Noctis immediately drew his weapon.
"What is happening?"
Sol’s expression changed.
"The Archive is closing."
"Why?"
"Because the God has located the entrance."
Rin’s stomach dropped.
"You said he couldn’t find us."
"I said he couldn’t predict us."
"That’s different?"
"Very."
"Wonderful."
Rin looked around.
"What do we do?"
Sol pointed toward the center of the chamber.
"The First Memory."
A massive crystal slowly descended from the ceiling. It was different from the others. Black on the outside.
Golden light pulsed inside. Rin could see a silhouette.
A person.
A boy.
No.
A young man.
His face was impossible to see clearly. But Rin knew him. He felt it.
A strange ache spread through his chest.
"That’s..."
His voice failed. Noctis answered.
"The First Rin."
Rin stepped closer. The crystal responded. Golden light spread across its surface.
A voice whispered from inside.
"You’re late."
Rin froze. That voice... He knew it. Not from this life. Not from Earth. From somewhere deeper.
"Who said that?"
Sol looked at the crystal. His expression suddenly became strange. Almost sad.
"I don’t know."
Rin turned toward him.
"You’re lying."
Sol looked at him.
"I don’t remember."
"That’s different."
"Yes."
Rin stepped closer.
"You recognize it."
Sol said nothing.
"Sol."
His shoulders lowered.
"...Yes."
Rin’s heart began beating faster.
"Whose voice is it?"
Sol looked at him. For several seconds... He couldn’t answer. Then the crystal spoke again.
"Little brother."
Everything stopped. Sol froze. Rin froze.
Noctis’s eyes widened. The words echoed through the chamber.
Little brother.
Rin slowly turned toward Sol.
"...What?"
Sol’s face had gone completely pale.
"That’s..."
His voice cracked.
"That’s impossible."
Rin stared at him.
"Sol."
"I don’t..."
"Sol."
"I don’t remember."
Noctis quietly said:
"You heard him."
Sol closed his eyes.
"I know."
Rin’s voice became barely audible.
"...Who is your brother?"
Sol opened his eyes. He looked at Rin. And for the first time since Rin had met him... Sol looked truly afraid.
"Don’t ask me that."
"Why?"
"Because I don’t know what will happen if I remember."
The crystal pulsed. Another memory appeared.
A room.
A small house.
Two boys.
The younger one had dark hair. The older boy had Rin’s face.
The younger boy was holding a wooden sword. The older boy laughed.
"Again?"
The younger boy nodded.
"Again."
"You lost five times."
"I wasn’t ready."
"You weren’t ready yesterday either."
"I’ll beat you tomorrow."
The older boy smiled.
"Then I’ll wait."
The scene disappeared. Rin couldn’t breathe. He turned toward Sol.
The younger boy... That was him. He knew it. Not logically. Emotionally.
His soul recognized the memory.
"You..."
Sol stepped backward.
"Rin..."
"You were there."
"I..."
"You were my brother."
Sol’s eyes filled with tears. He looked away.
"I don’t know."
"You do."
"I don’t!"
The sudden shout echoed through the chamber. Sol immediately covered his mouth.
Silence. Rin stared at him. Sol’s hands were trembling.
"I’m sorry."
His voice broke.
"I didn’t mean to shout."
Rin slowly approached. Sol stepped back again.
"Don’t."
"Sol."
"Please."
Rin stopped. Sol wiped his face quickly.
"I remember pieces."
"What pieces?"
"Our house."
Rin’s heart clenched.
"Our mother."
Sol swallowed.
"Your terrible cooking."
Rin blinked.
"My cooking?"
"You burned everything."
"I can cook!"
"No."
Sol laughed through his tears.
"You couldn’t even make rice properly."
Rin stared at him. Then laughed.
"I knew there was a reason you were annoying."
Sol smiled.
"You used to say that too."
Rin’s smile faded.
"Used to?"
Sol nodded.
"You called me annoying every day."
"Sounds accurate."
"You also called me..."
Sol stopped. Rin waited.
"What?"
Sol looked at him. His voice became soft.
"...Little shadow."
Rin’s heart stopped. The words triggered something.
A memory.
A summer afternoon. A younger boy following him through a field.
"Wait!"
"Come on!"
"I’m coming!"
"You’re too slow."
"I have short legs!"
Rin laughed. The memory disappeared. Rin touched his chest.
"Sol..."
The younger boy. The little brother. His brother. The realization didn’t feel like a discovery.
It felt like remembering something that had always been there. Rin’s eyes filled with tears.
"You’re really my brother."
Sol looked at him.
"I think..."
He laughed weakly.
"I think I am."
Rin stepped forward. This time Sol didn’t move away. Rin hugged him.
Sol froze. His arms remained at his sides. Then slowly...
He hugged Rin back. His shoulders began shaking.
"I thought you were gone."
Rin closed his eyes.
"I thought you were just a System."
Sol laughed softly.
"I was."
"That doesn’t make sense."
"Nothing about us makes sense."
Rin held him tighter.
"You’re my annoying little brother."
Sol buried his face against Rin’s shoulder.
"And you’re still a terrible cook."
"Shut up."
"No."
For the first time...
The System sounded like a younger brother.
Not a magical interface. Not an ancient guardian. Not a cursed being.
Just Sol.
Rin’s little brother.
Behind them, Noctis looked away. His expression was complicated.
Rin noticed.
"You knew."
Noctis nodded.
"I suspected."
"Why didn’t you tell me?"
"Because I couldn’t."
"Why?"
Noctis looked at Sol.
"His curse."
Sol slowly released Rin.
"He’s right."
He wiped his eyes.
"The God didn’t just curse my body."
He looked toward the golden crystal.
"He cursed my memories."
Rin’s expression hardened.
"What does that mean?"
"The more I remembered..."
Sol touched the black marks on his arm.
"...the stronger the curse became."
"So you forgot to survive."
"Yes."
Rin’s fists clenched.
"The God did that to you."
"Yes."
"Because of me."
Sol immediately shook his head.
"No."
"But—"
"No."
Sol looked directly into Rin’s eyes.
"This wasn’t your fault."
"What happened?"
Sol hesitated. Then looked at the crystal.
"The First Rin discovered the truth about the world."
"What truth?"
"The God wasn’t the creator."
Rin remembered the previous revelation.
"The world created him."
Sol nodded.
"But the God wanted more."
"More?"
"Control."
He pointed toward the Archive.
"The world was supposed to grow naturally. People were supposed to make choices. Kingdoms were supposed to rise and fall. But the God hated uncertainty. He wanted a perfect story."
Rin’s expression darkened.
"So he created timelines."
"Yes."
"To fix mistakes."
"Yes."
"And every time I made a choice he didn’t like..."
"He reset everything."
Rin looked at the crystals.
"Except the First Rin."
Sol shook his head.
"He remembered."
"Why?"
"Because he was outside the system."
Rin frowned.
"Like me."
"Exactly."
"And you?"
Sol smiled sadly.
"I helped him."
Noctis spoke quietly.
"You helped him fight the God."
Sol nodded.
"You and Noctis."
Noctis’s eyes lowered.
"And we lost."
Sol’s expression became painful.
"Yes."
Rin looked at Noctis.
"What happened?"
Noctis didn’t answer. Sol did.
"The First Rin died."
Rin’s chest tightened.
"And you?"
"The God cursed me."
"And Noctis?"
Sol looked at him.
"He refused to forget."
Noctis’s jaw tightened.
"So the God punished him too."
Rin looked between them.
"What did he do?"
Noctis finally spoke.
"I remembered."
"Everything?"
"Everything."
"Every timeline?"
"Every death."
Rin stared. Noctis looked at him.
"Yours."
The room fell silent. Rin suddenly understood why Noctis always looked at him with that strange mixture of affection and grief.
Why he knew things Rin had never told him. Why he had looked terrified when Rin chose to run toward him. Why holding Rin’s hand had seemed like something sacred.
"You’ve been waiting for me."
Noctis nodded.
"For a long time."
Rin’s voice shook.
"How long?"
Noctis smiled faintly.
"Long enough."
Before Rin could answer—
The Archive exploded with light. Sol pushed Rin backward.
"Get down!"
A golden beam tore through the ceiling. The entire chamber shook. Noctis drew his sword.
The God had arrived. Not physically. Not yet. But his presence filled the room.
A voice echoed.
"Sol."
Sol froze.
The voice was calm.
Almost gentle.
"You were always my favorite mistake."
Rin stepped forward.
"Stay away from him."
The voice laughed.
"You still protect him."
Sol looked at Rin. The God continued.
"Even after I made you forget him."
Rin’s eyes narrowed.
"You made him forget?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because memory creates attachment."
The God sounded almost amused.
"And attachment creates rebellion."
Rin clenched his fists.
"So you separated brothers."
"I separated variables."
"He is my brother!"
The entire Archive trembled. The God went silent.
Then—
"Not anymore."
Sol suddenly cried out. The curse erupted. Black energy spread across his body.
Rin rushed toward him.
"Sol!"
Noctis caught Rin.
"Don’t touch him!"
"LET GO!"
"The curse is reacting to the God!"
Sol fell to his knees.
"Rin..."
His voice was weak.
"I’m okay."
"No, you’re not!"
The God spoke again.
"Come back to me, Sol."
Sol lifted his head.
"No."
The God paused.
"What?"
Sol’s eyes glowed blue.
"I said no."
The curse spread farther. Sol stood. Slowly. Painfully. But he stood.
"You took my memories. You made me into a tool. You made me watch my brother die."
His voice became stronger.
"And then..."
He smiled.
"You accidentally made me immortal."
The God was silent. Rin stared. Sol looked toward him.
"That’s the funny thing about curses."
His eyes glowed brighter.
"They don’t always work the way you expect."
Blue light erupted from his body. The black curse cracked.
Not disappearing. Breaking. Like glass. Noctis stared.
"The World..."
Sol smiled.
"Yes."
Rin looked around. The Archive itself was responding. The golden crystals began shining.
Thousands. Millions. Every memory.
Every timeline. Every version of Rin. Every version of Noctis. Every version of Sol.
All of them began glowing at once.
The God screamed.
"STOP!"
The World answered. Not with words. With light. The God was pushed back.
For the first time... He lost control. Rin grabbed Sol’s hand. Noctis grabbed Rin’s other hand.
Three people. Three broken pieces of the same impossible story.
The golden light surrounded them. Sol looked at Rin.
"Big brother."
Rin smiled through tears.
"Yeah?"
Sol’s expression softened.
"I remember."
Rin squeezed his hand.
"What?"
"Our last day."
Rin’s smile disappeared.
"What happened?"
Sol looked toward the darkness. His voice became barely audible.
"You told me to run."
Rin stared.
"From the God?"
Sol shook his head.
"No."
He looked at Rin.
"You told me to run because you knew you were going to die."
Rin’s heart broke.
"What did I say?"
Sol smiled sadly.
"You said..."
His eyes filled with tears.
"I’ll find you again."
The Archive went silent. Rin whispered:
"I did."
Sol nodded.
"You did."
And somewhere beyond the golden light...
The God whispered:
"...No."
But Rin no longer heard him. Because for the first time...
He remembered. Not everything.
Not yet. But enough.
Enough to know that the story had never truly been about a System.
It had always been about two brothers who refused to lose each other.
And a world that had finally decided to fight back.
