The BL System Won't Let Me Rest!

Chapter 29: The Three Seconds That Changed Everything

"Found you."

The voice wasn’t loud. It didn’t need to be. It came from everywhere.

From the sky. From the ground. From inside Rin’s own head.

His blood ran cold. For one terrible second, he couldn’t move.

Then—

The world exploded. Light swallowed the fortress.

Rin felt Kaelith’s hand around his wrist as the Demon General pulled him backward.

"Rin!"

"I’M TRYING!"

The ground disappeared beneath them. Rin screamed. Kaelith cursed.

Something enormous crashed into the courtyard behind them, sending a shockwave through the fortress.

Rin was thrown forward. He lost Kaelith’s hand.

"Kaelith!"

A wall of white light separated them. Rin stumbled through the smoke.

"Kaelith?!"

Nothing.

"KAELITH!"

"Rin!"

That voice came from somewhere else. Noctis. Rin turned.

A figure emerged through the smoke. Long silver hair whipped violently around his face. His black clothes were torn at the shoulders, and blood ran down one side of his face.

But his silver eyes were fixed entirely on Rin.

"Are you hurt?"

Rin stared at him.

"You?"

Noctis grabbed his shoulders.

"Answer me."

"I’m fine!"

Noctis’s hands tightened.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes!"

Noctis exhaled. For the first time, Rin saw the fear leave his face. Then Rin noticed something.

Noctis was shaking. Not from exhaustion. Fear.

"You’re scared."

Noctis immediately looked away.

"I’m not."

"You are."

"No."

"Your hands are shaking."

"They aren’t."

"They literally are."

Noctis glanced down.

His fingers were trembling.

He slowly released Rin.

"...Fine."

Rin stared at him.

"You were worried."

Noctis looked toward the ruined courtyard.

"Of course I was."

The simplicity of the answer caught Rin off guard. Before he could respond—

A voice screamed through the air.

"RIN!"

Kaelith. Rin spun around. The Demon General was standing on the other side of the courtyard.

His sword was drawn. The white figure hovered above him. Kaelith’s clothes were torn.

Blood ran from his forehead. But he was standing. Alive.

Rin’s heart jumped.

"Kaelith!"

He moved forward. Noctis caught his arm.

"Don’t."

"But he’s—"

"Look."

Rin stopped. Kaelith wasn’t looking at Rin. He was looking at the thing above them.

The white entity. Its body looked almost human. Almost.

But there was no face. Only a smooth surface of white light. Its hand slowly lifted. Kaelith raised his sword.

Dark energy gathered around the blade.

"Get away from him."

The entity tilted its head.

"You continue to interfere."

Kaelith’s golden eyes narrowed.

"Who are you?"

"I am the hand of the one who wrote your ending."

Rin felt sick.

"The God..."

The entity turned toward him.

"Yes."

The word echoed. Rin’s stomach dropped. Noctis stepped in front of him.

"Don’t look at it."

Rin frowned.

"Why?"

"Because it can see through you."

The entity smiled. A mouth appeared across its featureless face. Rin immediately wished it hadn’t.

"How interesting."

Its voice changed. It sounded almost curious.

"You remember."

Noctis’s silver eyes hardened.

"I never forgot."

The entity looked at him.

"That was your mistake."

Noctis’s hands clenched. Rin looked between them.

"You know each other."

Neither answered.

"Noctis."

Nothing.

"Noctis."

His expression remained cold.

"Later."

"That’s not reassuring."

"It wasn’t meant to be."

The entity raised one hand.

"Enough."

The word shook the entire fortress. Stone cracked. Several guards fell to their knees. Selara shouted a command.

"Barrier formation!"

Magic exploded across the courtyard.

Blue.

Red.

Gold.

Dozens of protective spells appeared simultaneously. For a moment, the fortress seemed to resist. Then the white entity moved one finger. Every barrier shattered.

Rin stared.

"...Oh."

Noctis looked at him.

"Run."

"Again?"

"Yes."

"I’m starting to think that’s your favorite strategy."

"Rin."

"Okay!"

They ran. Behind them, Kaelith attacked. His sword collided with the white figure. The sound was deafening.

Rin glanced back. Kaelith’s blade stopped inches from the entity. The white figure caught the sword with one hand.

Kaelith’s eyes widened. Impossible. The entity pushed. Kaelith was thrown backward. He crashed through a stone pillar.

"KAELITH!"

Rin stopped. Noctis grabbed him.

"Keep moving!"

"But—"

"He’ll survive."

"You don’t know that!"

"I do."

Rin stared at him.

"How?"

Noctis’s eyes darkened.

"Because I’ve watched him die before."

Rin froze. Noctis pulled him forward.

"Don’t make me watch it again."

They ran. They reached the eastern corridor. The fortress shook around them. Rin could hear screams in the distance.

Orders. Magic. The sound of stone collapsing. Everything was falling apart.

"Where are we going?"

"Underground."

"Why?"

"Because the God cannot see below the old fortress."

"Why?"

"The original fortress was built before his influence reached this world."

Rin blinked.

"That’s incredibly convenient."

"It’s not."

"How is that not convenient?"

"Because we’re running toward something that even the God was afraid of."

Rin stopped.

"...That sounds significantly less convenient."

Noctis grabbed his hand.

"Move."

Rin stared at their hands. Noctis’s fingers were wrapped around his.

Warm. Firm. Familiar. Too familiar.

A strange image flashed through Rin’s mind.

A different corridor.

A different version of Noctis.

His silver hair was covered in blood.

Rin was crying. Noctis was holding his hand.

And Rin was saying—

"Don’t let me go."

The vision disappeared. Rin stumbled.

"Noctis..."

He stopped.

"What?"

"I saw something."

Noctis’s face changed.

"What?"

"You."

He swallowed.

"You were holding my hand."

Noctis didn’t move.

"Where?"

"I don’t know."

"Was it snowing?"

Rin’s eyes widened.

"Yes."

Noctis closed his eyes. For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then—

"It happened."

Rin’s heart began beating faster.

"When?"

"Another timeline."

"What happened?"

Noctis looked at him.

"You died."

Rin’s stomach dropped.

"Again?"

"Yes."

"And you were holding my hand?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Noctis’s voice became almost inaudible.

"Because you were afraid."

Rin stared.

"And you?"

"I was terrified."

That answer hurt more than Rin expected. Noctis continued walking. Rin followed. But this time...

He didn’t let go of his hand. They reached an enormous stone door.

Noctis pressed his palm against it. Nothing happened. He pressed harder. Still nothing.

"Come on."

Rin looked around nervously.

"Is this the part where the magical door asks for a password?"

"No."

"Good."

"It asks for blood."

Rin stared.

"...That’s worse."

Noctis pulled a small knife. Rin immediately grabbed his wrist.

"No."

Noctis looked at him.

"I need to open it."

"Then use mine."

Noctis froze.

"What?"

Rin held out his hand.

"Use my blood."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because the door recognizes you."

Rin blinked.

"...It does?"

Noctis nodded.

"It was built for you."

Rin stared at the door.

"Excuse me?"

Before Noctis could answer—

The stone door opened. By itself. A blue glow spilled through the cracks.

Rin slowly lowered his hand.

"...Okay."

Noctis looked equally disturbed.

"That wasn’t supposed to happen."

"Great."

Rin looked into the darkness.

"What happens now?"

Noctis’s expression became grim.

"We go inside."

"Obviously."

"And we don’t look back."

Rin sighed.

"Everyone in this world really likes saying that."

They entered. The door closed behind them. The chamber beyond was enormous.

Rin couldn’t see the ceiling. Blue crystals floated through the darkness. Thousands of them.

Each one contained an image.

A memory.

A person.

A moment.

Rin walked slowly.

"What is this?"

Noctis whispered:

"The Archive."

"The what?"

"The memories of every timeline."

Rin stopped.

"Every timeline?"

"Every one."

He looked at the crystals.

"There are thousands."

"No."

Noctis pointed upward.

"There are millions."

Rin stared. His mouth went dry. Each crystal showed a different Rin.

Rin laughing. Rin crying. Rin fighting. Rin running. Rin dying.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Rin stepped backward.

"No."

Noctis caught him.

"Don’t look."

"Those are me."

"Not you."

"That’s me."

"No."

Noctis’s voice became firm.

"Those are possibilities."

Rin stared at him.

"What’s the difference?"

"You are the one standing here."

Rin looked down.

His hands were shaking.

Noctis took them.

"Look at me."

Rin did.

"You’re here."

"Yes."

"You’re alive."

"Yes."

"That’s all that matters."

Rin swallowed.

"How do you know?"

"Because I’ve spent too long believing the opposite."

The words hung between them.

Then—

A tiny blue light appeared.

It floated between them.

Rin immediately recognized it.

"Sol?"

The light flickered.

A familiar voice answered.

"Hello, Host."

Rin smiled.

"You’re alive."

"Technically."

"Don’t say technically."

"I’m trying to maintain honesty."

"Can you do it without terrifying me?"

"I can try."

The blue light expanded.

Sol appeared.

Not as a window.

Not as a hologram.

His human form materialized in front of them.

Pale. Exhausted. His dark clothes were torn. Black cracks covered his neck and disappeared beneath his collar. Rin immediately rushed toward him.

"Sol!"

Sol barely managed to stand. Rin caught him.

"You’re hurt."

"I noticed."

"You almost died."

"Also noticed."

"Why are you joking?"

Sol smiled weakly.

"Because you’re here."

Rin’s expression softened. Noctis approached.

"How long?"

Sol looked at him.

"Three minutes."

Noctis’s eyes widened.

"You stopped time for three minutes?"

Sol nodded.

"I exceeded the limit."

"That’s impossible."

"Apparently not."

Noctis looked at the cracks spreading across Sol’s skin.

"You’re paying for it."

"Yes."

Rin looked between them.

"What’s happening to him?"

Noctis answered.

"The curse."

Rin turned to Sol.

"Can you remove it?"

"No."

"Can Noctis?"

"No."

"Can I?"

Sol smiled sadly.

"Maybe."

Rin blinked.

"Maybe?"

Sol stepped away. He pointed toward the center of the Archive.

"That is why we’re here."

A massive crystal descended from above. Unlike the others... This one was black. Rin stared.

"What is that?"

Sol’s expression became serious.

"The first timeline."

Noctis’s face went pale. Rin looked at him.

"What?"

Noctis whispered:

"No."

Sol nodded.

"Yes."

Rin stepped closer.

"What happened in the first timeline?"

Sol looked at him.

"That’s where you were created."

Rin frowned.

"I was born on Earth."

"Yes."

"Then how could I have been created here?"

Sol’s eyes filled with sadness.

"Because you weren’t the first Rin."

Silence. Rin’s heart stopped.

"What?"

Noctis closed his eyes. Sol continued.

"The person you were on Earth..."

"...was the final piece."

Rin stared.

"The final piece of what?"

"The first Rin."

The chamber trembled. The black crystal began glowing. Images appeared.

A young man.

Rin.

But not quite Rin.

He stood beside Noctis. His hair was the same. His eyes were the same. His smile was the same.

But there was something different.

He looked happy. He looked like he belonged.

Rin whispered:

"Who is that?"

Noctis answered.

"You."

"No."

"You."

"I don’t remember."

"You weren’t supposed to."

Sol stepped closer.

"The God erased your memories before sending your soul to Earth."

Rin stared at him.

"Why?"

"Because you discovered the truth."

"What truth?"

Sol looked toward the ceiling.

"The God isn’t the creator."

Rin’s breath caught.

"Then who is?"

Sol didn’t answer.

Noctis did.

"The world."

Rin looked at him.

"What?"

"The world created him."

The black crystal shattered. A wave of darkness exploded outward.

Sol grabbed Rin. Noctis raised his arm.

The entire Archive screamed. Millions of crystals shattered simultaneously.

A voice echoed through the chamber. Not the God. Something older. Something deeper.

Something that sounded like the world itself speaking.

"RETURN."

Rin covered his ears.

"What is that?!"

Sol shouted:

"Don’t listen!"

"RETURN TO THE BEGINNING."

Noctis grabbed Rin’s hand.

"Rin!"

Rin looked at him. For a moment... He saw another version of Noctis.

Silver hair.

Tears.

Blood.

A broken smile.

"If you ever find me again... Choose me."

Rin’s heart shattered. He tightened his grip.

"I won’t let go."

Noctis stared. Then his fingers closed around Rin’s.

"I know."

Behind them—

Sol screamed. The curse had reached his face. Black cracks covered half his body.

Rin turned.

"Sol!"

"GO!"

"I’m not leaving you!"

"You have to!"

"No!"

Sol smiled.

"Rin."

The black crystal above them began forming again. The God was coming. But Sol stepped forward.

For the first time... He looked neither afraid nor tired. He looked determined.

"I spent thousands of years obeying a God who thought people were pieces."

Blue light surrounded him.

"I won’t do it anymore."

Rin stared. Sol looked at him.

"You gave me a name."

His eyes softened.

"Now let me give you a choice."

Rin swallowed.

"What choice?"

"Stay."

Sol pointed toward the glowing Archive.

"Or leave."

Rin looked at Noctis. Then at the shattered memories. Then at the darkness approaching.

He knew what staying meant. Answers. Pain. Memories. Possibly death. Leaving meant survival.

But maybe... Another endless cycle.

Rin took a breath. Then smiled.

"I’m staying."

Sol smiled.

"I knew you would."

Noctis looked at him.

"Are you sure?"

Rin looked down at their joined hands.

"Yeah."

He squeezed Noctis’s hand.

"I’m tired of running."

A strange warmth spread through the Archive. The crystals stopped falling. The darkness stopped moving.

Even Sol stared.

"What..."

Rin looked around.

"Did I do that?"

Sol slowly smiled.

"Yes."

Noctis stared at Rin.

"You chose."

Rin laughed nervously.

"Apparently."

The System window appeared. Except this time...

It wasn’t blue. It was gold.

A single message appeared.

[NEW VARIABLE CONFIRMED.]

Then another.

[RIN LEE — STATUS: UNBOUND.]

Rin stared.

"What does unbound mean?"

Sol looked toward the darkness.

"It means..."

His smile disappeared.

"...the God can’t reset you anymore."

Rin’s eyes widened.

"And the others?"

Sol looked at Noctis.

"They’re next."

The Archive began glowing brighter.

Somewhere far beyond the world...

The God screamed.

And for the first time since the beginning of the timelines—

The scream sounded afraid.

Rin looked at Noctis.

Noctis looked back.

Neither released the other’s hand.

And somewhere behind them, Sol quietly whispered:

"Now... we can finally begin."
