The BL System Won't Let Me Rest!

Chapter 28: The System’s Secret

  • Next Chapter

Rin stared at the empty space where the System had disappeared.

He couldn’t move. He couldn’t breathe.

The last message was still burned into his mind.

[For the first time...]

[He is afraid.]

Who was "he"? The God? The Observer? The System itself?

Rin had no idea. And somehow, not knowing was worse. His hand was still wrapped around Kaelith’s. He only realized it when Kaelith gently squeezed his fingers.

"Rin."

"...Yeah?"

"You’re shaking."

"I know."

"You should sit."

"I know."

"Then sit."

"...You’re becoming bossy."

"I have always been bossy."

"True."

Rin slowly sat on the edge of the bed. Kaelith remained beside him. For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Rin looked toward the empty air.

"System?"

Nothing. He waited.

"System-kun?"

Nothing.

"Shiny stalker?"

Silence.

Rin’s eyebrows knitted together.

"...Okay."

He poked the air.

"Come on."

Nothing happened. Rin’s stomach tightened.

"Where are you?"

Kaelith looked at him.

"You expect it to answer?"

"Usually."

"Then perhaps it is wise to assume something is wrong."

Rin looked down.

"That’s what I’m afraid of."

He had spent so much time complaining about the System.

It interrupted him. It embarrassed him.

It gave him ridiculous missions.

It threatened him with tragic death.

It had even turned his life into some bizarre romantic comedy.

But it had always been there. Always.

Even when Rin was alone. Even when he was terrified. Even when nobody believed him.

The System had been the one constant thing.

And now... Nothing. Rin swallowed.

"System?"

A faint blue flicker appeared. Rin’s eyes widened. The screen immediately disappeared.

"Wait!"

Another flicker. Then another.

Finally, a window materialized.

Except... It looked wrong.

The blue color was faded. Cracks ran across the interface. Several words were missing.

The familiar cheerful icon in the corner was gone. Rin stared.

"Are you okay?"

The screen flickered.

[...Host...]

Rin froze.

The message was barely visible.

"I’m here."

[...Do not...]

The letters distorted.

[...trust...]

Rin leaned closer.

"Don’t trust who?"

The screen shook violently.

[...him...]

"Who?!"

Nothing.

Then another message appeared.

[WARNING.]

[Connection unstable.]

[Curse interference detected.]

Rin’s expression changed.

"Curse?"

Kaelith immediately stood.

"What curse?"

Rin looked at him.

"The System."

Kaelith’s eyes narrowed.

"Explain."

"I don’t know."

The screen flickered again.

[Host...]

[Please...]

[Do not panic.]

Rin stared.

"You’re telling me not to panic?"

[Yes.]

"...That’s impossible."

[Statistically expected.]

Rin blinked. Then laughed. A small, relieved laugh.

"There you are."

The screen flickered.

[Did you miss me?]

Rin’s eyes widened.

"You can joke again!"

[Unfortunately.]

"Thank God."

The System immediately displayed:

[Correction: Do not thank God.]

Rin’s smile disappeared.

"...Right."

The room became quiet again. Kaelith looked between Rin and the screen.

"Can it hear me?"

Rin looked at the System.

"Can you hear him?"

[Yes.]

Kaelith spoke directly toward the floating window.

"What are you?"

The System remained silent.

Rin frowned.

"System?"

[...I cannot answer that.]

"Why?"

[Curse restriction.]

"Who cursed you?"

The screen flickered.

Nothing.

Then:

[CURSE DETECTED.]

[Unauthorized question.]

[Answer blocked.]

Rin’s expression darkened.

"So the God did this."

The System didn’t respond.

It didn’t need to.

Rin already knew.

"How long?"

[Unknown.]

"What do you mean unknown?"

[The curse predates Host’s current timeline.]

Rin stared.

"How many times have you been here?"

The System paused.

[...Every time.]

Rin’s heart stopped.

"Every..."

He swallowed.

"...single timeline?"

[Yes.]

Rin looked at Kaelith.

Kaelith remained silent.

Rin turned back.

"Then why didn’t you tell me?"

[Could not.]

"Because of the curse?"

[Yes.]

"What happens if you try?"

The System flickered.

[Penalty.]

Rin’s voice became softer.

"What kind of penalty?"

Silence.

"System."

Nothing.

"Tell me."

The screen turned black.

For a moment, Rin thought the connection had failed again. Then white letters appeared.

[Host death.]

Rin froze.

"...What?"

[If I directly reveal restricted information...]

[Host dies.]

Kaelith’s expression changed instantly.

"The curse is connected to Rin."

[Yes.]

Rin stood.

"So every time you’ve tried to help me..."

[Host has experienced consequences.]

Rin’s face went pale.

"That’s why."

The memories suddenly made sense. The System’s strange warnings. The moments when it disappeared.

The missions that seemed ridiculous but somehow pushed him toward Kaelith. The moments when the System had forced him into dangerous situations... only for those situations to somehow save him later.

Rin whispered:

"You weren’t trying to make me suffer."

[...No.]

"You were trying to keep me alive."

[Yes.]

Rin’s eyes burned.

"Then why did you keep giving me romantic missions?"

The System paused.

[Host required emotional synchronization.]

Rin stared.

"...What?"

[The curse cannot fully identify emotional bonds.]

[The stronger Host’s emotional connections become...]

[The harder it becomes for the God to predict Host’s decisions.]

Rin’s mouth fell open.

"So..."

He pointed at himself.

"All the flirting..."

[Necessary.]

"The missions?"

[Necessary.]

"The physical contact?"

[Necessary.]

"The date?"

[Necessary.]

"The kiss?!"

The System froze.

[...Extremely necessary.]

Kaelith suddenly coughed. Rin turned toward him.

"Don’t."

"I said nothing."

"You were thinking loudly."

Kaelith looked away. Rin turned back to the System.

"You made me flirt with a Demon General because it was strategically useful?"

[Yes.]

"And you knew I was embarrassed."

[Extremely.]

"You enjoyed it."

[No.]

A pause.

[Possibly.]

Rin covered his face.

"You’re impossible."

[You have repeatedly informed me of this.]

For the first time in hours... Rin smiled. Then his smile slowly disappeared.

"If you’re helping me..."

He looked at the screen.

"Why are you so afraid?"

The System didn’t answer.

"That message."

Rin pointed at the empty air.

"You said the Observer was compromised."

No response.

"And the God was aware."

Nothing.

"And then you said..."

Rin swallowed.

"He is afraid."

The screen flickered.

[...Yes.]

"Why?"

The System remained silent.

"System."

[...Because Host survived.]

Rin frowned.

"I’ve survived before."

[No.]

The screen suddenly became brighter.

[You have survived before.]

[But you have never chosen before.]

Rin stared.

"What does that mean?"

[Previous timelines followed predetermined emotional patterns.]

[Previous Host versions behaved according to probability.]

[They loved.]

[They fought.]

[They lost.]

[They died.]

Rin’s chest tightened.

"And me?"

[You are different.]

"Why?"

The System paused.

[Because you were never supposed to be here.]

Silence.

Rin looked at Kaelith.

Kaelith’s expression had become unreadable.

"What?"

The System continued.

[Your death was not part of the original story.]

Rin felt cold.

"My death?"

[Yes.]

"You mean..."

[The world was not supposed to receive you.]

Rin’s breathing slowed.

"Then why did it?"

[Someone called you.]

Rin’s eyes widened.

"Who?"

The System immediately flickered violently.

[CURSE INTERFERENCE.]

[ANSWER BLOCKED.]

"System!"

The screen shook.

[Do not ask again.]

"Why?"

[Because I cannot protect you from the answer.]

The screen disappeared. Rin stood completely still. Kaelith approached.

"Enough for tonight."

Rin shook his head.

"No."

"Rin."

"I need to know."

"You need rest."

"I need answers."

"You may not survive the answers."

Rin looked up. Kaelith’s golden eyes were serious.

"I don’t care."

Kaelith frowned.

"I do."

Rin stopped.

"...What?"

"I care."

The words were simple. Quiet.

But they hit Rin harder than anything else that night.

Kaelith stepped closer.

"You keep speaking as though your life is a piece on someone else’s board."

Rin didn’t answer.

"You are not."

Kaelith’s voice softened.

"You are Rin."

Rin stared at him.

"That’s..."

His voice cracked slightly.

"...really unfair."

Kaelith frowned.

"Why?"

"Because you’re making it difficult to panic."

Kaelith almost smiled.

"Good."

Rin laughed quietly.

Then the System appeared again.

[Emotional synchronization increasing.]

Rin looked at it.

"Seriously?"

[Important development.]

"You’re really going to interrupt this?"

[Yes.]

Rin sighed.

"What now?"

The System displayed a new window.

[Hidden Quest Unlocked.]

Rin groaned.

"Oh, come on."

[Quest Name: Protect the System.]

Rin froze.

"...What?"

Kaelith looked at him.

"What did it say?"

Rin slowly read the words.

[Objective:]

[Prevent the System from being destroyed.]

[Reward:]

[Truth.]

[Failure:]

[Permanent separation.]

Rin stared.

"Permanent..."

The System flickered.

[Host.]

"I’m here."

[There is something I need to tell you.]

Rin’s heart began pounding.

"What?"

[If the curse is broken...]

[The God will remember you.]

Rin’s face went pale.

"And?"

[He will come.]

The room went silent.

Kaelith’s hand moved instinctively toward his sword. Rin whispered:

"Then we’ll deal with him."

The System flickered.

[No.]

Rin frowned.

"What?"

[You don’t understand.]

[The God cannot be defeated.]

Kaelith spoke calmly.

"Everything can be defeated."

[Incorrect.]

[He created the rules.]

[He created the timelines.]

[He created me.]

Rin stared.

The System continued.

[He can erase anything.]

[Except one thing.]

Rin’s voice was barely audible.

"What?"

[Choice.]

The word remained on the screen.

Rin looked at it.

"Choice."

[Yes.]

[The God can control outcomes.]

[He can control probabilities.]

[He can restart timelines.]

[He can erase memories.]

[He can manipulate the story.]

[But he cannot directly control a choice made outside the story.]

Rin’s eyes widened.

"Outside the story..."

Kaelith looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

The System didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

[Host.]

[You are outside the story.]

Rin’s breath caught.

"What?"

[You were never a character.]

The room seemed to disappear around him.

[You were a reader.]

[Then you died.]

[Then you entered the story.]

[And because you entered from outside...]

[The God cannot completely control you.]

Rin stared.

"That’s why the timelines are changing."

[Yes.]

"That’s why Kaelith is changing."

[Yes.]

"That’s why Aiden remembers."

[Yes.]

"That’s why Ji-ho exists."

[Yes.]

"And Noctis..."

The System paused.

[Noctis remembers more than anyone.]

Rin’s expression tightened.

"What is he?"

The System went silent.

"System."

No answer.

"Please."

The screen flickered.

[Noctis was the first.]

"The first what?"

[The first person to escape the story.]

Rin froze.

Kaelith’s eyes narrowed.

"Escape?"

[He was not supposed to become aware.]

[But he did.]

[The God attempted to erase him.]

[He survived.]

Rin remembered Noctis’s tired eyes. His endless loneliness. The way he had looked at Rin as though seeing a ghost.

"He became a Witness."

[Yes.]

Rin swallowed.

"Why?"

[Because he chose to remember.]

Silence.

"And the others?"

[They forgot.]

"Every timeline?"

[Yes.]

"Except him."

[Yes.]

Rin sat down slowly.

"This is insane."

[Correct.]

"I’ve died twice."

[Technically more.]

"Don’t correct me right now."

[Apologies.]

Rin rubbed his face.

"So the System..."

He looked at the screen.

"...You’re trapped too."

[Yes.]

"You’re cursed."

[Yes.]

"And every time you try to tell me the truth..."

[You suffer.]

[Or Host suffers.]

Rin stared.

"You’ve been helping me while being forced to hurt me."

The screen flickered.

[That is an accurate summary.]

Rin’s eyes became wet.

"That’s horrible."

[It is acceptable.]

"No."

Rin shook his head.

"It’s not."

[Host...]

"You don’t get to say it’s acceptable."

The System remained silent.

"You’ve been alone too."

The blue window flickered. For a moment... No words appeared. Then one tiny message.

[...Yes.]

Rin smiled sadly.

"Well."

He wiped his eyes.

"You’re not alone anymore."

The screen flickered.

[Host...]

"I’m serious."

[...Thank you.]

Kaelith watched quietly.

Something about his expression softened.

Then—

A loud crash echoed from the corridor. Rin jumped.

"What was that?"

Kaelith drew his sword.

"Stay here."

"No."

"Rin."

"I’m coming."

"You are impossible."

"I know."

They rushed into the hallway.

Guards were running toward the western tower. Selara shouted:

"General!"

"What happened?"

"The Witness!"

Kaelith stopped.

"Where?"

"The courtyard."

Rin’s heart dropped. They ran. When they reached the courtyard...

Everyone froze. The snow had stopped. In the center stood the black-robed Witness.

Noctis.

He was staring directly at Rin.

But something was wrong. His face was pale. His hands were trembling.

He looked... afraid.

Kaelith stepped in front of Rin.

"Noctis."

Noctis didn’t answer. His eyes remained fixed on Rin. Then he whispered:

"You’re awake."

Rin frowned.

"What?"

Noctis took a step forward.

"The God knows."

Rin’s blood ran cold.

"The God knows what?"

Noctis looked at Kaelith. Then back at Rin.

"He knows the System failed."

The air became colder.

"He knows you remember."

Rin swallowed.

"And what happens now?"

Noctis’s eyes filled with something Rin had never seen before.

Fear.

"Now..."

He looked toward the sky.

"...he sends someone."

A crack appeared across the moon. Rin stared upward. The sky itself was splitting.

Kaelith raised his sword.

Lucien arrived behind them.

Vorak followed.

Selara began casting a defensive spell.

The fortress bells began ringing.

Once. Twice. Three times.

Then every magical barrier around the fortress activated simultaneously.

The System appeared beside Rin.

But this time...

There was no humor. No sarcastic comment. No cheerful notification. Only one message.

[Host.]

Rin looked at it.

"What?"

[Stay behind Kaelith.]

Rin blinked.

"You sound scared."

The System flickered.

[Yes.]

Rin’s heart sank.

"Who is coming?"

The sky cracked again. Something descended through the fracture.

Not a monster.

Not a demon.

Not a human.

A figure made entirely of white light.

Its face was hidden. Its presence alone forced every person in the courtyard to their knees.

Everyone except Rin.

And Kaelith.

Rin looked at the figure.

The System suddenly screamed.

Not in words. In static. The blue interface shattered across the air.

[ERROR]

[ERROR]

[ERROR]

[HOST PROTECTION PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.]

Rin reached toward it.

"System!"

The screen flashed one final message.

[I’m sorry.]

Rin’s eyes widened.

"For what?"

The System answered.

[For what I am about to do.]

The entire world froze. Kaelith stopped moving. Noctis stopped breathing.

Snow hung motionless in the air. Even the falling pieces of the shattered moon became still.

Only Rin could move. Only Rin could see. And the System remained beside him.

The cracked blue window slowly transformed. The cheerful interface disappeared completely.

Behind it was something else.

Something ancient. Something that looked less like a program... and more like a person.

A pair of tired blue eyes appeared on the screen.

Rin stared.

"...You have a face?"

The figure smiled faintly.

"Only when I need to."

Rin’s mouth fell open.

"You can talk like that?!"

"Not usually."

"Then who are you?"

The figure looked toward the white entity descending from the sky.

"I told you."

Its expression became sad.

"I’m the one trying to keep you alive."

Rin’s heart pounded.

"What’s your name?"

The figure hesitated. Then smiled.

"My name..."

The entire world trembled.

"...was erased a very long time ago."

Rin stared.

"Then I’ll give you one."

The figure blinked.

"What?"

Rin smiled.

"Everyone needs a name."

For the first time... the System looked genuinely surprised.

Rin thought for a moment. Then grinned.

"How about... Sol?"

The figure stared at him. A tiny tear appeared in one blue eye.

"...I like it."

The white entity above them moved. Sol’s expression changed.

"Rin."

"Yeah?"

"Run."

"Where?"

"Anywhere."

"That’s not a plan!"

"It’s the only plan I have."

The entity raised one hand. The frozen world began to crack. Sol’s voice became louder.

"RUN!"

Rin grabbed Kaelith’s hand.

The world exploded.

And somewhere beyond the broken sky... something ancient finally opened its eyes.

"Found you."
